Leon Vokoun
77, World War II veteran
SAN BERNADINO, Calif. -- Leon Vokoun, 77, of San Bernadino, Calif., died July 8, 2002, at Redlands Community Hospital in Redlands, Calif.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rodney Pruss will officiate. Burial of cremains will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Vokoun was born in Buffalo County to Frank and Emma Vokoun. He lived in San Bernadino, Calif., for 18 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for Sears, Roebuck and Company in the credit field for 33 years.
He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks 984 of Kearney for 45 years. He did volunteer work for AARP as a tax aide and was involved in neighborhood activities.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, and two stepsons, John and Phillip Bowman.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
Evelyn Francisco
K. Evelyn Francisco, 82, of Grand Island died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Skilled Nursing Unit of St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Faith United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The casket will be closed.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Francisco was born Jan. 17, 1917, in Grand Island to Chris and Mary (Sorensen) Rasmussen. She grew up in Grand Island and attended Grand Island Public Schools, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1935.
She married
Bruce Francisco Sr. on Oct. 25, 1936, in Grand Island.
She worked for Reed's Hat Shop, then later worked for United Appliance Wholesalers. She then worked for her parents in the North Pine Grocery until 1961. Mrs. Francisco operated her own business doing invisible re-weaving of garments for 15 years. She then provided child care for Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Manchik for 14 years.
She was a member of the Danish Sisters and Faith United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her dog and working in her garden and yard.
Survivors include one son, Bruce Francisco Jr. of Grand Island; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Lillie Philbrick
Lillie Marie Philbrick, 69, of Burkett Station died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the All Faiths Chapel at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. The Rev. David Vaughn will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday prior to the services at the chapel.
Mrs. Philbrick was born June 15, 1929, to Roy and Sophia (Schaffer) Winder in Republican City. She received her education in Kensington, Kan.
She married
Elmer Philbrick on Dec. 26, 1945, in Smith Center, Kan. She spent time with her husband in Portland, Ore., prior to living in Kansas City. She later returned to Nebraska to live the rest of her years. Mr. Philbrick died on July 13, 1987. She was a housekeeper until she retired in 1980.
She enjoyed birds, animals, nature, being outdoors, farm life and country music.
Survivors include four sons, Douglas E. Philbrick of Hutchinson, Kan., Bennie Hall of Augusta, Kan., Billy Freeman of Cabot, Ark. and William "Steve" Thiesen of Salina, Kan.; one daughter, Joyce J. Reinert of Newton, Kan.; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Gladys Gibbson of Cozad, Ila Libra of Elm Creek and Doris Ellenberger of Dayton, Ore.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Opal Oswald
Opal J. Oswald, 58, of 1604 Virginia Drive, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at her home after an illness.
Services are pending at Kleine Funeral Home.
Trea Tobin
Trea Michael Richardson Tobin, infant son of Carl Tobin Jr. and Courtney Richardson of Grand Island, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Faith Cervantes
KEARNEY -- Faith A. Cervantes, 61, of Kearney died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Mission cemetery at Mission, S.D. O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cervantes was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Rosebud, S.D., to Oliver and Ida (Frost) Green. She attended school in Alliance.
She married
Juan P. Cervantes in Alliance in 1954. She had lived in Kearney for nearly 40 years. She worked as a custodian in the food service department at the University of Nebraska at Kearney before retiring.
She was a member of the Prince of Peace Church in Kearney.
Survivors include her husband; one son, John of Franklin; seven daughers, Joyce Fauela of Grand Island, Angelita Salinas, Mary Zapata, Lisa Chavez and Rochelle Kruetzer, all of Kearney, Sulema Martinez of North Platte and Yolanda Alvarado of Hastings; one brother, Alex Hill of Avondale, Ariz.; one sister, Geraldine Vigil of Lexington; 32 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, one daughter and two sisters.
Arnold Grim
DANNEBROG -- Arnold P. Grim, 70, of Dannebrog died Thursday, June 10, 1999, in Dannebrog.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. The Rev. Robert Carlson Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge cemetery in Dannebrog.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials area suggested to the church or the Dannebrog and Boelus EMTs.
Mr. Grim was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Dannebrog to Lemuel and Elta (Lingford) Grim. He grew up in Dannebrog and attended Dannebrog Public School.
He married
Elaine Lemburg on Feb. 28, 1949, in Denver. He worked with his father in the trucking business, later owning the business until 1977. He then worked at Ford New Holland. During layoffs, he worked for Centura Schools, Chief Industries and Arrow Stage Lines.
He later retired from New Holland, but continued driving a tour bus for Arrow Stage Lines and also drove for Eppley Express, retiring from driving in 1994.
The couple lived in Dannebrog all of their married
life. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on Feb. 28, 1999.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, traveling, woodworking, cutting firewood and auctions.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog and the Dannebrog Fire Department, where he served as chief for many years.
Survivors include his wife of Dannebrog; three sons, Larry of San Diego, Kelly of Hastings and Harry of Waverly; three daughters, Paula (Mrs. David) Snider of Dannebrog, Mary (Mrs. Neal) Trentman of Ainsworth and Sherry (Mrs. Tom) Moore of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Ray and Melvin of Dannebrog, George of Plano, Texas, and Dale of Bradenton, Fla.; and three sisters, Lucile Fox of Dannebrog, Ruth Rinehart of Horseshoe Bend, Ark. and Verna (Mrs. Doyle) Wohlers of Albany, Ore.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Sally Harders and an infant daughter, Jewell; four brothers, Leonard, Clyde, Dean and Vern; and a sister, Audrey.

STROMSBURG -- Lewis G. Lindburg, 80, of Stromsburg died Friday, June 11, 1999, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
