Janet Powell
OMAHA -- Janet L. Powell, 78, of Omaha, formerly of Ravenna, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at the Florence Nursing Home in Omaha.
Arrangements are pending at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Monte Hord
PELHAM, N.Y. -- Monte M. Hord, 46, of Pelham, N.Y., died tragically on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Central City with the Rev. Del Funk officiating.
Wagner Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Hord Children's Educational Fund.
Mr. Hord was born Aug. 24, 1955, in Grand Island to Thomas F. and Gloria M. Hord. He was one of six children, grew up in Central City and worked on the Hord family's ranch and feedlot operations. He graduated from Central City High School in 1973. He belonged to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and was a 1978 graduate of the University of Nebraska.
He married
Lisa Sharp on June 7, 1990.
Mr. Hord worked as vice president of institutional equities for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center. He was a hospice volunteer, soccer coach and was very involved in his community.
Survivors include his wife Lisa; their three children, Molly and twins Sophie and Jackson: two brothers and sister in-law, Dan and Chris Hord of Wilmette, Ill., and Stacy Hord of Biloxi, Miss.; and two sisters, Sara Beck of Lincoln and Debra Taylor of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Agnes Kesel
ANAHEIM HILLS, Calif. -- Agnes R. Kesel, 89, of Anaheim, Calif., formerly of Costa Mesa, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, due to cancer.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Newport Harbor Lutheran Church.
There will be no visitation. Her body will be cremated. Burial of ashes will be in Grand Island cemetery at a later date.
Omega Society in Santa Ann, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kesel had retired from retail clerks union.
Survivors include two sons, Richard and John Kesel; two daughters, Corrine Bosworth and Mary Brewster; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Arlyce Smeltzer
TEMPLETON, Calif. -- Arlyce J. Smeltzer, 74, of Templeton, Calif., died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at a nursing home in Morro Bay, Calif.
A memorial service was held Sept. 8 at the First Presbyterian Church in Templeton. Burial of her ashes will be in Clarks at a later date.
Mrs. Smeltzer was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Polk to Herbert and Josephine (Lindburg) Wurtz. The family moved to a farm near Havens in 1933. She attended grade school at District 61 school near Havens and graduated from Clarks High School in 1944. She taught school at District 50 school near Clarks for one year before moving to California in 1945.
She married
Francis R. Smeltzer on June 23, 1950, at Wee Church of the Heather in Glendale, Calif. The couple lived in Montrose, Calif., near Los Angeles, until 1997, when they moved to their retirement home in Templeton, Calif. For several years, she worked for the phone company, then for Sears-Roebuck and returned to work with the phone company.
Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kristen Smeltzer of Escondido, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Dave Sommerville of Atascadero, Calif.; four grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Pat Wurtz; and two sisters and son-in-law, Barbara and Bill Kohl and Ruth Douglas, all of Clarks.
Samuel Taylor
Samuel G. Taylor, 85, of Grand Island, formerly of Albion, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion. The Rev. Frank Baumert will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 162 and VFW Post No. 736 of Albion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday with rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Levander Funeral Home in Albion and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Frank Swantek
GENOA -- Frank L. Swantek, 81, of Genoa died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Genoa Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa. The Rev. Robert Nienaber will officiate. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery.
Visitation was Thursday at the church.
Anson Funeral Home in Genoa is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Swantek was born Aug. 29, 1920, near Genoa to Charles and Felicia (Jarecke) Swantek. He attended school through the eighth grade. As a young man, he was involved in C.C.C. Camp.
He married
Mary Ksiazek on Aug. 4, 1941, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks. The couple lived in Omaha until 1943 when they moved to the Genoa area. He farmed and worked at Sack Lumber until his retirement. He was living on the farm until the time of his death.
He was a member of the church and the St. Rose of Lima Holy Name. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Margaret Ritterbusch of Hemmingford, Kathy and Max Merrill of Alliance, Julie and Steve Plasek of David City and Jean and Bill Dubas of Palmer; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Jane Swantek of Salida, Colo., and Chris Swantek of Montrose, Colo.; four sisters, Virginia Wagner of Wichita, Kan., Alvina Schwery of Omaha, Dorothy Liss of Duncan and Jean Koziol of Omaha; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and five brothers, Ted, Henry, Emil, Lawrence and Ray Swantek.
Hugo Daberkow
CURTIS -- Hugo Daberkow, 96, of Curtis died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapman Cemetery. Mike Hefner will officiate. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Blase Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.
Mr. Daberkow was born Sept. 7, 1905, at West Point to August and Paulina (Heiler) Daberkow. He attended school in Ervington, Scribner and Wisner. He worked as a section hand at age 15. He worked on a road gang for four years. Later he was a truck driver and mechanic for a gravel company. He attended radio mechanic school in Chicago, Ill. He worked as a carpenter in Omaha for many years.
He married
Eleanora Schulz of Beemer in 1935. He worked in Cheyenne, Wyo., on B-17 bombers until 1945.
He married
Helen Nelson Tracey in Omaha in 1946. She died on June 5, 1969.
He worked as a carpenter, mechanic and custodian. He also repaired radios and TVs and sharpened saws. He moved to Chapman in 1970 and to Curtis in 1995. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Central City.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Herd Graham of Omaha and Sandra and Roland Spangler of Curtis; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, William and Herman and a sister, Dorothea.
Zondria Clauss Infant
Zondria A. Clauss, infant, of Grand Island died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, shortly after birth.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Mike Chase will officiate.
Memorials are suggested to Omaha's Children's Hospital.
Zondria was born Sept. 15, 2001, to Christopher and Shannon (Houlton) Clauss of Grand Island.
Survivors include her parents and a sister, Allison E. Clauss.
