'Naya' Dembowski

Lennea "Naya" J. Dembowski, 51, of Grand Island died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Richard Karohl officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Evergreen cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Nancy Schultz officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Dembowski was born Aug. 28, 1950, in Red Oak, Iowa, to James W. and Cleo R. (Davidson) Crawford. She grew up in the Brooks and Corning, Iowa, areas, graduating from Corning Community High School in 1968. She studied nursing at Nebraska Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1971. She worked in Omaha.
She moved to Grand Island and worked at Lutheran Hospital until 1973.
On Nov. 25, 1972, she married
Lawrence Dembowski in Brooks, Iowa. They moved to Omaha where she worked for various health care facilities. She moved to Columbus in 1980, working at David Place in David City, and then at Columbus Community Hospital until returning to Grand Island in 1988.
She worked at St. Francis Medical Center until 1995, and then worked at Park Place Nursing Center, Tiffany Square and the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
She enjoyed sewing, reading, quilting, knitting, cooking, NFL football and NHL hockey.
She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and was past president of Parents Without Partners.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David and Melissa Dembowski of Grand Island; one daughter, Anastasia Dembowski of Grand Island; and one sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Tom Haley of Wall Lake, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Robert Crawford.
Agnes Meyer
98, Nurse
ST. PAUL -- Agnes Meyer, 98, of St. Paul died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul with the Rev. Karl Ziegler officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery in Worms.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacobesen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Ms. Meyer was born July 8, 1903, in Prosser to Henry W. and Emma L. (Kruse) Meyer. When she was 6, the family moved to Illinois. In 1923 she graduated from Aurora High School and then taught parochial school in Elwood and Oxford.
In 1927 she entered nurses training at the Lutheran Memorial Hospital in Chicago. After receiving her registered nurse degree, she worked in various Chicago hospitals and doctors' offices. In 1989 she retired and moved to St. Paul.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of St. Paul and enjoyed music and singing in the church choir.
Survivors include five sisters, Olga Seim of Grand Island, Louise Seim of Portland, Ore., Selma Harris of Ogden, Utah, Helen Miller of Neena, Wis., and Ruth Seim of Hemet, Calif.; and one brother, William Meyer of Austin, Texas.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther and Emma; and five brothers, Oscar, Theodore, Ervin, Arnold and Paul.
Paul Sheets
SARGENT -- Paul Sheets, 76, of Sargent, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sargent. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery with military graveside services.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rhoad's Funeral Home in Sargent. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Sargent ambulance fund.
Frank Swantek
GENOA -- Frank L. Swantek, 81, of Genoa died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Genoa Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa. The Rev. Robert Nienaber will officiate. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church with a wake service at 7 p.m.
Anson Funeral Home in Genoa is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Swantek was born Aug. 29, 1920, near Genoa to Charles and Felicia (Jarecke) Swantek. He attended school through the eighth grade. As a young man, he was involved in C.C.C. Camp.
He married
Mary Ksiazek on Aug. 4, 1941, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks. The couple lived in Omaha until 1943 when they moved to the Genoa area. He farmed and worked at Sack Lumber until his retirement. He lived on the farm until the time of his death.
He was a member of the church and the St. Rose of Lima Holy Name. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Margaret Ritterbusch of Hemmingford, Kathy and Max Merrill of Alliance, Julie and Steve Plasek of David City and Jean and Bill Dubas of Palmer; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Jane Swantek of Salida, Colo., and Chris Swantek of Montrose, Colo.; four sisters, Virginia Wagner of Wichita, Kan., Alvina Schwery of Omaha, Dorothy Liss of Duncan and Jean Koziol of Omaha; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers, Ted, Henry, Emil and Ray Swantek.
Alma Thoene
BURWELL -- Alma M. Thoene, 84, of Burwell died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell with the Rev. Bernard Berger officiating. Burial will be in the Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church, with a wake service at 7 p.m.
Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Ambulance Supply Fund.
Alice Ulrich
ORD -- Alice Ulrich, 89, of Ord died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are pending with Ord Memorial Chapel.
Evelyn Schacht
88, Rancher and farmer
LINCOLN -- Evelyn A. Schacht, 88, Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the Village Manor in Lincoln.
Private services for family and friends will be at the Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Donella Silveira will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Messiah Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Schacht was born on March 23, 1913, at Fairbury to Albert and Emma (Sundermeier) Garn. She grew up and received her education in Plymouth.
She married
Otto L. Schacht on July 16, 1932, in Aurora. The couple lived at Dewey Lake Lodge and Ranch in Valentine. They owned and operated the lodge until 1937, when they moved to Ainsworth. In 1942, they moved to Grand Island. In 1946 they moved to a farm in Hamilton County. In 1967, they retired and returned to Grand Island. Mrs. Schacht moved to Lincoln in 1986 to be near her daughters.
She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church where she was active in the women's circles.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wayne A. Schacht of Denver and Glen W. and Sally Schacht of Grand Island; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille E. and Dwane Folts and Florence A. and Jack Treffer, all of Lincoln; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Raymond A. Garn of Omaha; and two sisters, Stella L. Evans of Fairbury and Helen L. Gooper of Arkadelphia, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandchild; two sisters, Frances A. Maxson and Florence E. Glanz; and an infant brother.
