Arno Jensen
ALBION -- Arno M. Jensen, 81, of Albion died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at BryanLGH East in Lincoln.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Larry Sydow will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in St. Edward with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 162 and VFW Post 736 of Albion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 .m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Jensen was born March 12, 1920, at Bancroft, Idaho, to Christian M. and Thora (Rasmussen) Jensen. At the age of three, his family moved south of St. Edward where he attended rural Boone and Nance county schools. He graduated from St. Edward High School in 1937. Following graduation, he was a truck driver until entering the U.S. Army on June 5, 1972. He served as a heavy automotive equipment operator in Central Europe.
He married
Margaret B. Willard on Dec. 30, 1942, in Columbus. Following his discharge on Dec. 31, 1945, the couple lived west of St. Edward where he worked as a farmhand for Aubrey Smith. He later lived and worked northeast of St. Edward on Roy Cumming's farm. They then moved to St. Edward where he and Evan Draeger operated the Mobile Service Station. In 1948, they moved to the George P. Willard farm south of Albion where he farmed, sold Trojan seed and did custom hay baling. In the spring of 1966, they moved to Albion and he began working at Taylor 66 Service Station in Albion. He was a dispatcher for the Boone County Sheriff's Department from early 1981 until his retirement in 1992.
He was a member of St. Edward Crosier American Legion Post 226 and later the Albion American Legion Post 162 and VFW Post 736. He served on Boone County District 74 School Board and worked security at the Boone County Fair for many years. He also enjoyed pitching horseshoes and bowling.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Jerry Dawson of Hyannis, Anita and Gary Bartak of Madison and Mary Derby of Albion; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl Jensen of Fairbault, Minn.; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda Svatora of Albion, Ruth and Carl Kroegh of O'Neill and Ula and Rodney Jacobsen of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Iva Jensen and a brother-in-law, Robert Svatora.
Shirley Obermiller
ST. PAUL -- Shirley Obermiller, 61, of St. Paul died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Services are pending at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Darwin Brown Jr.
53, Self-employed
LITTLETON, Colo. -- Darwin E. Brown Jr., 53, of Littleton, Colo., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary in Littleton, Colo. His body was cremated. Burial will be at a later date in Belgrade.
Mr. Brown was born Dec. 13, 1948, at Genoa to Darwin E. Sr. and Doris L. Brown. He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney and worked on his masters at Wichita State University.
He married
Sandra G. Ratzlaff on May 25, 1985, in Littleton, Colo. He was self-employed at Continental Security Group in Denver. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard and was ranked as Staff Sargent.
He was a member of Elks Club and American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and hunting.
Survivors include his mother of Belgrade; his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bryan and Amy Brown of Parker, Colo., and Troy and Allison Brown of Aurora, Colo.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Chan and Shayla Rains of Junction City, Kan.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Esther Hahle
BOISE, Idaho -- Esther C. Hahle, 92, of Boise, Idaho, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at West Wind Care Center in Boise, Idaho.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at United Lutheran Church in Hampton. Burial will be in Bethesda Mennonite cemetery in Henderson. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 19 in Augustana Chapel at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boise, Idaho.
Higby Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hahle was born Jan. 19, 1909, in a sod house on the Blue River near Stockham to Karl and Julia Hofmann. She grew up on a farm near Sutton and attended Sutton High School. She took painting lessons, helped on the family farm and worked as a cook at the Silver Moon Café in Sutton.
She married
Chris B. Ediger of Henderson in 1931. The couple lived on the Ediger family farm north of Henderson. After her husband's death in 1937, she returned to Sutton for a short time. Then she returned to the Henderson community and lived there for the next nine years. During that time, she sold Avon, took in teacher boarders and was active in Bethesda Mennonite Church and in the community. She spent a year as a cook at Freeman Junior College in Freeman, S.D.
She later married
William A. Hahle, a farmer of Aurora, in the summer of 1946. The couple was married
nearly 25 years and were active members of United Lutheran Church in Hampton, the Farmers Union and Democratic Party. The also enjoyed traveling to see their children and once went to Guyana, South America. After her husband's death in 1970, she left the farm and moved to Aurora where she lived until 1999. During these years, she remained active in her church. She was a member of Friendship Club for more than 50 years. The last five years in Aurora, she traveled to Boise, Idaho, to spend winter months with her daughter. In the winter of 1999, she moved to West Wind, as assisted living community in Boise, Idaho, where she lived for more than two years. She enjoyed displaying her painting and cardinal collection. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, flowers, letter writing and cooking.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Ardyce and Vernon Arp of Boise, Idaho; three stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Wilma and Lloyd Deeds of Sheridan, Wyo., Lilah and James Smith of Grand Island and Ileen Dunnington of Ankeny, Iowa; three stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Robert Hahle of Grand Island, Bill and Sondra Hahle of McCook and the Rev. Dennis and Jeanie Hahle of Durham, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, three brothers, Hilmer, Fritz and Paul, a sister, Emma Griess and a son-in-law, Robert Dunnington.
Brother John R. Kaighin, O.S.B.
57, monk
ATCHISON, Kan. -- Brother John R. Kaighin, O.S.B., 57, a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, Kan., died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2001, due to a heart attack.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the abbey church. Burial will follow in the abbey cemetery. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the abbey church.
Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home in Atchison is in charge of arrangements.
Brother John was born Jan. 24, 1944, at Lexington. He graduated in 1962 and earned his bachelor's degree in music education in 1966 from St. Benedict's College in Atchison. He then studied in summer sessions at Kearney State College.
He became a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey on Sept. 2, 1973, after completing the year of training as a novice monk. He taught music in the Atchison Catholic Elementary School and taught the English as a foreign language program at Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison. In 1985 and 1986, after studies at the University of Kansas, he obtained high school accreditation for teaching English as a second language. He taught in the English language support program at Benedictine College in 1990 and 1993.
He served his abbey community in a wide variety of ways. He was the abbey librarian for several years and edited the in-house newsletter, News and Views (renamed Home Pages). He had prepared the liturgical readings in the daily worship service since 1993. He became assistant vocations director in 1997. He sang in the abbey schola from 1973 to 1992. He also served many years on the abbey garden and grounds crew.
Survivors include his sister, Janet Wallace of Grand Island; and his fellow monks.

Ann L. Schneider, 88, of Grand Island died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Park Place Nursing Home.

Eva Webb
97, Real estate broker
Eva Webb, 97, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Utica Community Care Center in Utica.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray Schroeder will officiate. There will be a private burial for the family following the service.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Webb was born Aug. 30, 1904, in Grand Island to Leslie and Olive (Duncan) Winkler. She graduated from a Grand Island high school.
She married
James T. Webb in 1930 in Evergreen, Colo.
She was a real estate broker and managed several properties around this area. She spent a lot of time sponsoring civic improvements and volunteering at Stuhr Museum. In 1976 she was recognized in the "Who's Who in Nebraska."
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the Nile and Riverside Saddle Club. One of her hobbies was collecting antiques.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Bette and Gene Tiner of Lincoln; three grandchildren; and 11-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a stepson, James Webb Jr.; two sisters, Ruth Hoffman and Edith Lieske; and two brothers, John and Walter Winkler.
Ernest Birkel
FULLERTON -- Ernest Birkel, 89, of Fullerton died Sunday, Jan 20, 2002, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Richard Whiteing will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a 7 p.m. scripture service and rosary.
