Howard Hurd
AURORA -- Howard H. Engert Hurd, 80, of Aurora died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary chapel. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Mr. Hurd was born Oct. 13, 1921, at Canandaigua, N.Y., to Fred and Irene (Brown) Engert. He was an orphan train rider and was raised by James and Martha Hurd. He grew up in Stromsburg, attended District 25 School and graduated from Stromsburg High School.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he drove taxicabs and worked for Meadow Brook Hospital driving an ambulance in New York.
He married
Gladys E. Finn on Oct. 30, 1952, in Greeley, Colo. He began driving a truck as an owner/operator and over the years he worked for Eisemae Chemicals, Seward Motor Freight, Monfort and G.I. Moving and Storage.
He was a member of the VFW. He did public speaking at schools, care centers and the Plainsman Museum on his involvement in the Orphan Train Heritage Society of America. He enjoyed playing cards and bowling.
Survivors include his wife; five sons and daughters-in-law, James and Maureen Engert of Sidney, William and Jill Engert of Jefferson, S.D., Renard and Annie Engert of Grand Island, Loren and Cheiko Engert of Dalhart, Texas, and Carlin and Chris Engert of Aurora; five daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Lyal Gustafson of Madison, Wis., Frances and Brian Weisgerber of Boonsboro, Md., Renee and Chuck Enderle, and Martha and Luis Hernandez, all of Aurora, and Lorene and Jerry Landers of Lincoln; 37 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Idona Swedenburg of Clarks; and a sister and brother-in-law, Imogene and Everett Lorman of Stromsburg.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas Haas and Gary Engert, and a daughter, Marjorie Kidd.
LeRoy Lebsock
GIBBON -- LeRoy H. Lebsock, 89, of Gibbon, formerly of Omaha, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Hooper. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon is in charge of arrangements.
'Beth' Morris
WAYNE -- Bethene W. "Beth" Morris, 87, of Wayne died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Providence Medical Center in Wayne.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Wayne. The Rev. Mary Tyler Browne will officiate. Private burial will be at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to Providence Medical Center or the church.
Mrs. Morris was born Nov. 15, 1914, at Atkinson to G.C. and Mabel (Bokhof) Funk. She graduated from Atkinson High School and attended Wayne State College. She was employed as a secretary for the State of Nebraska Department of Employment at Ogallala.
She married
Stanley Morris on March 24, 1940, in North Platte. The couple lived in San Diego and Oakland, Calif., during World War II. They moved to Wayne in 1948. She was the office manager at Morris Machine Shop from 1960 until retiring in 1978.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, a former Sunday School teacher and active in other church organizations. She was a member of Minerva Club and Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed reading and traveling and was an avid fan of sports, including Nebraska football.
Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carol Morris of Hastings; a daughter, Lorraine Beadell of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymer and Ruth Funk and Dean and Jeanine Funk, all of Atkinson; and a sister, Beulah Atkins of Wayne.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Beadell.
Donn Camp
BRIGHTON, Colo., -- Donn D. Camp, 41, of Brighton, Colo., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in Denver.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at The Sanctuary in Ft. Morgan, Colo. Burial will be in Memory Gardens cemetery in Ft. Morgan.
Memorials are suggested in his name to Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary in Ft. Morgan.
Mr. Camp was born Feb. 8, 1960, at Grand Island to John L. and Jill J. Camp. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1978.
He married
Deborah Johnson on Nov. 23, 1983, in Brush, Colo. He moved to Ft. Morgan in 1978, and has lived in Brighton since 1998. He was an auctioneer and entrepreneur.
He was a member of Colorado and Wyoming Auctioneer's Association and the Brighton Elk's Lodge. He attended Harvest Fellowship in Brighton. He enjoyed barefoot water skiing, traveling, spending time with his nieces and nephews and NASCAR Winston Cup. He was an avid Nebraska and Denver Broncos football fan.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Aubrey Camp of Ft. Morgan; a brother, Bradley Camp of Hochston, Ga.; two sisters, Trisha Simonson of Kearney and Holly McDonald of Springfield, Mo.; his parents, Jill DeHaes of Kearney and John L. and Janice Camp of Ft. Morgan; and grandparents, Ben and Gladys Camp of Wood River and Evelyn Gealy of Columbia, S.C.
'Jack' Fye
BANNING, Calif. -- Donald "Jack" Fye, 74, of Banning, Calif., formerly of Aurora, died Jan. 7, 2002, at San Grogonia Pass Hospital in Banning.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary chapel in Aurora. The Rev. Jim Garfield will officiate. Burial will be in the Richland cemetery in Marquette.
Memorials are suggested to the Pure Rock Christian Fellowship Church in Beaumont, Calif.
Mr. Fye was born March 31, 1927, at Aurora to Arthur J. Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth (Adams) Fye. He grew up on a farm six miles north of Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.
He worked for the U.S. Civil Service for 30 years and later worked in the Riverside County, Calif., Probation Department for eight years.
He married
Dorothy J. (Shine) Davidson on April 28, 1960, at Treasure Island in San Francisco. The couple was born again in Christ at the Glory to God Ministries in Cathedral City, Calif. His wife died April 11, 1993.
Survivors include a son, Arthur D. Fye of Beaumont, Calif., a daughter, Robin Y. Skadowski of Hemet, Calif.; and a brother, Arthur J. Fye Jr. of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his wife, an adopted son, David A. Anderson Fye, and a sister, Betty R. Jackson.
Cleo Patra Vanderford
WAURIKA, Okla. -- Cleo Patra Vanderford, 89, of Waurika, Okla., died Jan. 3, 2002.
Services were held Jan. 5 at Dudley Funeral Chapel in Waurika, Okla. Reed Montgomery officiated. Burial was in Waurika Cemetery.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association.
Mrs. Vanderford was born March 8, 1912, near Ryan, Okla., to Charles and Anna Mae (Welch) Campbell. She attended the Ryan and Sugden schools and graduated from Sugden High School.
She married
Austin Vanderford on June 17, 1928, in Waurika, Okla., while he was teaching in the Sugden school. When the school closed in 1936, the couple moved to the Oklahoma City area where they farmed and ranched with her husband's father. In 1947, they moved to Chapman where they farmed near Grand Island. They helped develop irrigation systems in the area. Her husband died May 13, 2000.
The couple collected, restored and refinished many rare antiques. They commuted back and forth from home to Wolbach and also commuted at their home in Oklahoma.
She was a member of the Methodist faith, attending Methodist churches in Chapman and Wolbach. She was an avid gardener.
Survivors include two nephews, Wayne Elkins and Gene Elkins, and a niece, Carolyn Dippel.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eugie Elkins and Dorothy Muzny.
Dale 'Tiny' Nienhueser
Dale E. "Tiny" Nienhueser, 61, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Onamae Waddel will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Nienhueser was born Dec. 14, 1940, in Grand Island to Leonard and Maxine Bernice (Hein) Nienhueser. He grew up and was educated in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1958.
He married
Kathleen Gemmell in 1969 in Kansas. The couple lived in Grand Island. He was employed with Kinman Chevrolet, the Humane Society for 10 years, the City of Grand Island and later with construction for Kelley Well. He was also employed by Conoco Service Station, retiring for health reasons in 1994.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Nomad Club. He enjoyed older Chevrolets, leather work, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include a son, Shawn Nienhueser of Grand Island; two grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sharon and Jimmy Johnson of Grand Island and Rose Anne Smith of Kelleyville, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Shannon.
