Jim Murphy
LINCOLN -- James "Jim" E. Murphy, 76, of Lincoln died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in North Platte. The Rev. Scott Courtney will officiate. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell.
There will be a memorial mass at 5:45 p.m. Feb. 6 at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Lincoln.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. rosary, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
Memorials are suggested to the Senior's Foundation Elder Care Fund in Lincoln.
Mr. Murphy was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Grand Island to John and Sara (Waite) Murphy. He graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Grand Island.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, during World War II, and achieved the rank of seaman first class.
He married
Bonnie Buresch Jan. 3, 1955, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island until 1972, when they moved to North Platte.
He was a member of the Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion, Elks, and Union Pacific Old Timers.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Joe Lockard and Susan and Edward Smith, all of Lincoln; two sons, Roderick of Missoula, Mont., and Thomas of Arlington, Va.; two brothers, John of Columbus and William of Morro Bay, Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Allen.
George Cassel
MONROVIA, Calif. -- George Cassel, 82, of Monrovia, Calif., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Santa Teresita Hospital in Duarte, Calif.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lee Park cemetery near Arcadia. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Jimmie Phillips
Jimmie A. Phillips, 83, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Lakeview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graceland Cemeteries in Greenville, S.C.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home in Greenville.
Mrs. Phillips was born on June 29, 1917, in Franklin County, Ga., to James William and Mary Elizabeth (Porter) Ayers. She was raised and educated in Marietta, S.C.
She married
Nelson A. Phillips on April 21, 1935, in Franklin, Ga. She was a homemaker and helped her husband run the Marietta Barber Shop. Mr. Phillips died in 1971.
Survivors include her daughter, Rose M. (Mrs. Floyd) Donahue of San Antonio; five grandchildren, including Mary Ann Venteicher of Grand Island, who was her primary caregiver; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth McCollum of Toccoa, Ga.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, W.T. Ayers and David Ayers; and six sisters, Joy Cash, Nellie Brown, Vastie Webb, Alma MacDuffie, Maudie Bowers and Georgia Terrell.
Fred Terry
Fred E. Terry, 90, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Wedgewood Care Center.

Richard Wiehl
Richard Wiehl, 79, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

H.S. 'Jack' Duvall
ORD -- H.S. "Jack" Duvall, 85, of Ord died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord. The Rev. Gerald Roggow will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Mr. Duvall was born on Feb. 11, 1915, at Audubon, Iowa, to Frank and Bertha (Griffin) Duvall. He was raised on the family farm at Viola Center, Iowa. He graduated from Viola Center High School in 1932. He then farmed with his father.
He married
Mildred Lincoln on June 27, 1947, at Viola Center. They moved to Nebraska and lived at Atkinson and a couple of other Nebraska communities. He then attended barber school in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple moved to Ord in 1960 and lived in town for three years before purchasing a farm south of Ord in Mira Valley.
He operated a barber shop in Ord until 1985. He also farmed until 1990. He had spent the last three months at the Valley County Nursing Home.
Mr. Duvall was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and had held various offices in the church. He was a past member of the Ord Rotary and had been a weather spotter. He enjoyed farming, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Donna Schlichtemeir of Lincoln, Rose Sheets of Angola, Ind., Virginia Duvall of Aurora, Colo., and Linda Freeman of Ord; three sons, Richard of Grand Island, Lester of Okemos, Mich., and Arthur of Ord; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandson.
Emma Glinsmann
ASHTON -- Emma Glinsmann, 88, of Ashton died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are pending with Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City.
Betty Kady
ALDA -- Betty L. Kady, 69, of Alda died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Curran Funeral Chapel in Grand Island. The Revs. Rose M. Bartleson and Bev J. Minor will officiate. Private family burial will be at a later date in the Alda Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Kady was born on Nov. 15, 1931, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Robert E. and Mamie E. (Carter) Nicola. She grew up and was educated at Thomas Jefferson School in Council Bluffs.
She married
Lester Kady on June 6, 1954, at Council Bluffs. They moved to Alda in 1964. Mrs. Kady worked at the Alda Grocery for several years before working at Leon Plastics and retiring after 25 years. Mr. Kady died on April 4, 1983.
Mrs. Kady enjoyed playing cards and reading.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alda.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Michael) Meguire of Alda; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Barbara Veitz of Creston, Iowa, Beverley (Mrs. Leonard) Hoffman of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Ida May (Mrs. Eldon) Hansen of Cedar Bluffs.
'Gene' Thorpe
GIBBON -- Eugene "Gene" Thorpe, 87, of Gibbon, formerly of Homosassa, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Gibbon.
Family services will be at a later date. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Gibbon Library Fund.
Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Thorpe was born on Oct. 16, 1913, in Leroy, Wis., to Laurens and Alma May (Stephenson) Thorpe. The family moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where he graduated from high school. He graduated from Cornell University with honors in 1940 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.
He married
Ruth L. Heineman on Aug. 17, 1940, in Hamburg, N.Y., where they lived. He was plant supervisor for National Steel at the Lackwanna, N.Y., plant until retiring in 1973. They moved to Homosassa, Fla., where they lived until moving to Gibbon just last week.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, W. Keith of Roseville, Calif., David of Caracus, Venezuela, and Philip of Rochester, N.Y.; one daughter, Sandra Borden of Gibbon; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandson and two sisters.
