Shirley Hines
JUNIATA -- Shirley M. Hines, 52, of Juniata died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. The Rev. Andrew Menke will officiate. Burial will be in the Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard cemetery in rural Adams County.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to St. Cecilia's Catholic Church Renovation Fund.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hines was born Feb. 1, 1950, in Grand Island to Maynard and Lauretta (Krull) Dill. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School and attended Baker University in Kansas. She was an accountant for Sprint Audit and attended St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. She moved to Hastings from Kansas City, Kan., two years ago.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Tami and Tony Nab of Norman, Okla., and Tiffani and Corey Wiseman of Juniata; six grandchildren; her parents of Kenesaw; and sisters, Janice Bonifas of Juniata, Victoria Beaudro of Houston, and Cathy Sundberg of Kerrville, Texas.
Elmer Nielsen
MINDEN -- Elmer H. Nielsen, 86, of Minden died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at his home south of Minden.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden. Dr. Terry Palmer will officiate. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Nielsen was born Oct. 1, 1915, in Kearney County near Minden to Peter C. and Amelia (Ramus) Nielsen. He spent part of his childhood in Denmark. He attended rural school east of Minden and Minden High School. After his schooling, he farmed with his father.
He married
Mattie Johnson on Feb. 28, 1940. The couple bought a farm seven miles south of Norman in 1943 and farmed there until 1982. They then moved to an acreage south of Minden. In addition to crop farming, he was involved in milking cows and raising cattle. His wife died in 2000.
He was a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Minden. He had been active on the Upland School Board.
He enjoyed playing cards and working around the farm.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Juliann and Roland Spilinek of Elba; a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin W. and Kathy Nielsen of Minden; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Shirley Nielsen of Minden; and a brother-in-law, Dean Dunn of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his wife.
Anna Starostka
SILVER CREEK -- Anna Starostka, 93, of Silver Creek died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Church in Silver Creek. The Rev. Dave Korth will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday with a 7:30 p.m. vigil and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Starostka was born Oct. 27, 1908, at Clarks to Metro and Mary (Demboski) Beck. She grew up on a farm near Clarks where she attended country school.
She married
Edward Starostka on Feb. 12, 1931. Her husband died Jan. 9, 1950. She lived in Clarks and Silver Creek before moving to Stromsburg.
She was a member of St. Lawrence Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed reading, sewing and dancing.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Rex Grossnicklaus of Columbus; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Kathryn Konwinski, Stella Gonslor, Dorothy Gonslor and Barb and Richard Savage, all of Columbus, Josephine Beck of Blair and Rose Anderson of Polk; and brothers and sister-in-law, Donald and Alice Beck and Charles Beck, all of Clarks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Donald L. Starostka, a grandchild and three brothers, Albin, Eddie and Walter Beck.
Angel Hamilton
Angel K. Hamilton, 10, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Resurrection Catholic Church with the Rev. James C. Schmitt officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Resurrection Catholic Church with a rosary at 7 p.m.
All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.
Angel was born Aug. 24, 1991, in Grand Island. She was the daughter of James and Susan Hamilton of Grand Island. She was a fourth-grader at Engleman Elementary School.
Angel enjoyed being around her classmates and her friends at Bethpage. She enjoyed music, swimming, walks and family.
Survivors include her parents of Grand Island; four sisters, Sarah, Brittany, Maria and Taylor; two brothers, Christopher and Jacob and grandparents Kenneth and Alvesa Hamilton of St. Paul, Nola Clark of Grand Island and Charles J. Clark of Alda.
Frank Brim
SARGENT -- Frank Edward Brim, 83, of Sargent died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Sargent.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sargent. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in Geranium cemetery east of Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent with a 7 p.m. wake at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Brim was born July 3, 1918, at Sargent to Frank and Barbara (Slegel) Brim. He attended the Roe Grove rural school and graduated from Sargent High School in 1936. As a young man he farmed with his father and later worked for Mulligan Sand and Gravel and farmed at George Mulligan Farms.
He married
Viola Ritchie on Dec. 28, 1970, at Sargent. They farmed and ranched northwest of Sargent until they retired and moved into town in 1989. He entered Beverly Healthcare in November 2001.
He enjoyed watching horses, playing cards and sightseeing. He was a lifelong member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sargent.
Survivors include his wife; four step-children, Mary Anne and Boyd Cool of Calloway, David and Joni Ritchie of Litchfield, Bernard and Cheryl Ritchie of Sargent and Sue and David Fear of Elm Creek; two sisters, Alice Chalupa of Sargent and Loraine Scott of Ansley; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two infant brothers; one sister, Rosie Chalupa; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
Virgil Dembowski
FARWELL -- Virgil M. Dembowski, 76, of Farwell died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul.
Gerald Finney
BROKEN BOW -- Gerald E. Finney, 80, of Broken Bow died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Iverson Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Jim Stark will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at Iverson Memorial Chapel in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the VFW of Broken Bow.
Mr. Finney was born May 5, 1921, in rural Custer County to Oscar H. and Stella (Flanagan) Finney. He spent most of his life in Custer County except when serving in the Army during World War II. He served three years having achieved the rank of Corporal. He served as a gunner on an Anti-Aircraft 601.
He married
Irene Trotter, who preceded him in death. He later married
Georgia Gilbert. He worked for Kansas-Nebraska Gas for 34 years, retiring in 1983.
He was an active member of the VFW and Cooties and a past member of the Elks Club. He was named Elk of the Year in 1984-85.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Carmen Finney; two daughters and a son-in-law, Alberta and J.B. Morgan and Janece Johnson; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Other than his first wife, he was preceded in death by two infant sons; one infant daughter; two grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters.
