Pearl Dunkel
BROKEN BOW -- Pearl M. Dunkel, 95, of Broken Bow, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Dr. Charles Gregory will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to Mid Nebraska Individual Services.
Helen Geiger
81, Grocery store owner
CENTRAL CITY -- Helen Geiger, 81, of Central City, formerly of Farwell, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Central City Care Center in Central City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Farwell. The Rev. Larry Coulter will officiate. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Catholic cemetery near Farwell.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation at the church will be from 8:30 a.m. Friday until service time.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Geiger was born Jan. 10, 1920, on a farm near Farwell to John and Mary (Rozmiarek) Wolinski. She attended a rural school and St. Anthony's Catholic School in Farwell.
She was raised on a farm until she was 18, then moved to Grand Island where she worked as a housekeeper for two years.
She married
Everett Geiger on May 20, 1940, in Farwell. They lived on a farm northwest of Farwell until 1965 when they moved into Farwell. He worked at Scoular Grain Elevator in Farwell. They bought a grocery store, which she ran, until they sold it in 1975.
The couple moved to Parkside Plaza in St. Paul in April 1988. He died Oct. 24, 1988. She moved to Grand Island in February 1989. In August 1999, she moved to IHS at Central City.
She enjoyed baking and jigsaw puzzles.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church of Grand Island and the Council of Catholic Women at St. Anthony's Church in Farwell.
Survivors include on daughter, Lorey Gosch of Grand Island; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Eldon and Pat Geiger of Cushing, Lyle and Marla Geiger and Russell Geiger, all of Central City, Larry and Kari Geiger of Grand Island and Lonnie and Jeanette Geiger of St. Paul; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Esther and Bob Gilly of Central City and Clara and Earl Kaiser of St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Maryann; twin grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; five brothers; and three sisters.
Mary Ann Major
LEXINGTON -- Mary Ann Major, 69, of Lexington died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington following a brief illness.
Services will at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington. The Revs. Steven Major and Don Buhrman as well as the Diocese of Lincoln will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday in St. Leonard's Catholic cemetery in Madison.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home Chapel. A rosary will be at 7 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to St. Ann's Catholic Church Renovation Fund, Lexington Public Library or charity of the donor's choice.
Dorothy McCall
NORFOLK -- Dorothy M. McCall, 69, of Norfolk died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings. The Rev. Earl Higgins will officiate. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Wood River School Athletic Department.
'Gus' Hackman
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla., -- Services for A.E. "Gus" Hackman, 95, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., will be at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Grand Island.
Mr. Hackman died Sept. 23, 2001.
Delores Madden
70, Telephone company employee
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- Delores R. Madden, 70, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in Sierra Vista.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Indianola, Neb., with the Rev. Daniel Pohl officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Memorials are suggested to the National Lung Association.
Mrs. Madden was born on Aug. 16, 1931, in Lepp, Okla., to LeRoy and Opal (Pace) Baker. She was educated in Tucson, Ariz., and graduated from Tucson High School.
She married
James L. Madden on July 17, 1950, in Tucson. They lived in Tucson, and in 1955, they moved to San Diego, where she worked for Pacific Bell Telephone Co. for more than 27 years. They later moved to Chula Vista and El Cajon, Calif. They moved to Grand Island in 1987 and to Sierra Vista in 1995.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; her mother, Opal Zoberskie of Spring Valley, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Ginger Baker of Las Cruces, N.M.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Wayne Nelson of Spring Valley, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Verla Brown
Verla L. Brown, 91, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at her home.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Salvation Army Church, 705 N. Sycamore St., with Capt. Al Simmert officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.
Mrs. Brown was born on Feb. 19, 1910, at Burr Oak, Kan., to Oscar and Alletta (Olgalovia) Beenblossom. She grew up in Grand Island and attended Lincoln School.
She married
LeRoy Brown on Dec. 15, 1946, at Concordia, Kan. They lived in Grand Island. She worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and Hastings Naval Plant. Mr. Brown died in 1956.
Mrs. Brown had been a member of the Salvation Army since 1923. She also was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Leona Buchanan of Grand Island; a son, James Whitmyer of Cassoppiolos, Mich.; 26 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Weldo of Lexington.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three daughters, Marrion, Elnora and Irene; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister.
Damon and Dane Starke
Damon and Dane Starke, twin infant sons of Terry and Craig Starke, died shortly after birth Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001 at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kleine Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. until service time.
Damon and Dane were baptized in the Catholic faith shortly after their birth.
Survivors include their parents of Grand Island, three sisters, Haili Copas-Starke, Kiya Starke and LaKota Starke; one brother, Coy Starke; grandparents, Jack L. Dunne of Grand Island, Anna "Suzie" Dunne of Grand Island, and Eva and Ken Wilcox of St. Paul; great-grandfather, Raymond Plebanek of Grand Island; and great-grandmother, Ila Dunne of Taylor.
The twins were preceded in death by great-grandmothers Marie Plebanek and Phyllis Evans.
