David Butterfield
David C. Butterfield, 59, of Grand Island died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the V.A. Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grand Island Veterans Home All Faiths Chapel, with Chaplain Bill Forbes officiating.
Burial will be at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the Veterans Home.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Butterfield was born May 10, 1944, at Omaha to Charles David and Loretta Ann (Danes) Butterfield.
Survivors of the immediate family include two sons, Daniel Butterfield of Conover, N.C., and David Butterfield of Raleigh, N.C.
David C. Butterfield entered the U.S. Navy on Dec. 27, 1962, and served as a Navy Seal. He was stationed in Norfolk, Va., and served two tours in Vietnam. He was discharged on Dec. 23, 1966.
He then lived in various communities in North Carolina, Colorado, Wyoming and finally, Nebraska.
Orval Roush
Orval D. Roush, 86, of Grand Island died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Rev. Martin Schmidt will officiate.
Inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Helen Nowak
ST. PAUL -- Helen Mae Nowak, 82, of St. Paul died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Revel L'dy will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Helen Mae Nowak was born Feb. 16, 1922, at Dannebrog to Magnus and Helen (Nielsen) Jacobsen.
She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands.
Survivors of the immediate family include a son, Charles, of Cushing, and two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Leon Mathis of St. Libory and Kimberly and Brian Graviette of Hastings.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, Michael and Tim Mathis, Lisa Bean, and Jordan Graviette; and three great-grandchildren, Wade Mathis, Abby Mathis and Jacie Bean.
Helen grew up in Dannebrog, where she received her education and graduated from Dannebrog High School.
She married
Ernie L. Kipp on Jan. 31, 1942, at Yuma, Ariz. The couple lived in Long Beach, Calif., until moving to St. Paul in 1946. Mr. Kipp died on Nov. 15, 1964.
Helen continued living in St. Paul and was employed in the Howard County Clerk's office.
She married
Robert P. Nowak at Hebron on March 3, 1967. The couple lived in St. Paul and Helen operated the Fashionette, a women's clothing store in St. Paul. Mr. Nowak died on Dec. 28, 1978.
Helen continued to live in St. Paul and operate the Fashionette. After 26 years in business, she retired in 1992.
She was a member of the St. Paul American Legion Auxiliary of St. Paul.
She loved Nebraska football, enjoyed and attended Legion baseball games and also enjoyed other sports.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, and five brothers, Kenneth, Eugene, Osborn "Tibby," LaVerne "Curly" and Ray.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Calvin 'Cal' Miller
UTICA -- Calvin C. "Cal" Miller, 93, of Utica died Saturday, April 3, 2004.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Utica. The Rev. David Masten will officiate.
Burial will be in the Utica Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 7 to 8, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward and will resume one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Mr. Miller was born Aug. 24, 1910, to Roy C. and Barbara E. (Cross) Miller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beth.
Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Kathie Miller of Lincoln and Dick and Marilynn Miller of Grand Island; a daughter, Susan Lieske of Atlanta; and a sister, Fern Shrader of Lincoln.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Mr. Miller was a graduate of Utica High School. He was an owner and trainer of horses for many years and was a member of the Thoroughbred Race Horse Association.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Utica, a charter member of the Utica Grange, and a former member of the Utica school board and the Seward County Fair Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Barbara Miller; his wife, Beth; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Gladys Miller; and a son-in-law, Don Lieske.
Memorials are suggested to the Utica United Methodist Church or the donor's choice in care of the family.
'Steve' Schuller
Stephen "Steve" R. Schuller, 56, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Phil Flott will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery, with military rites provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard of Fort Riley, Kan.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 6:15 p.m. rosary/wake service at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Mr. Schuller was born Aug. 18, 1947, at Poole to Frank and Elizabeth (Pokorney) Schuller.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Maria; a daughter, Desa Tucker of Lincoln; his mother of Ravenna; a brother, Wendell of Omaha; and a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and John Holmgren of Golden, Colo.
Other survivors include two grandchildren, Elliott and Ashley Tucker of Lincoln.
He grew up on a farm near Poole and attended school in Pleasanton, Nebraska, graduating in 1964.
He attended the National Electronic Institute in Denver in 1965. Steve was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966, serving in Vietnam. He earned promotions to the rank of Staff Sergeant and received numerous awards and commendations.
Following his active service, he served in the Army Reserve and the National Guard for a total of 19 years.
He married
Betty Scheiding in 1967. In later years, he married
Maria Gladys Rodriguez.
Steve was a member of the Am Vets in Grand Island, and had served as vice commander. He was also a member of VFW Post #759.
He was preceded in death by his father and two infant daughters.
