Marie Chidley
GREELEY, Colo. -- Marie L. Chidley, 83, of Greeley, Colo., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colo.
Graveside services were held Friday at Fairmount cemetery in Denver.
Marie Louise Chidley was born August 26, 1920, at Luseland, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Henry and Anna (Schmale) Hohmann.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, who died on March 4, 1993.
Survivors of the immediate family include a sister, Esther Zugbaum of West Chester, Ohio.
Other survivors include a niece, Audrey Hongsermeier, and a nephew, Carl "Dick" Niedfelt, both of Grand Island, and nine other nephews and nieces in Alabama, California, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.
She was the seventh of eight children. The family had homesteaded in Canada in 1909 and in November 1920 returned to Grand Island.
In 1938 she graduated from Grand Island High School in Grand Island. After completing telegraphy school in 1943, she began her employment with Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in August 1980.
On September 5, 1958, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Grand Island, she married
Gordon D. Chidley of Denver, Colo. The couple resided in Hugo, Colo., where both worked for Union Pacific Railroad. In June 1972, they moved to Aurora, Colo., where both continued their work with the railroad.
Emma Hunt

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Emma Nicole Hunt, infant daughter of Douglas and Michelle Hunt of Albuquerque, N.M., and sister to Chris Lyda, died on Tuesday, March 2, 2004.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heart of Junction Church, 801 Gunnison in Grand Junction, Colo., with the Rev. Darren Crow officiating.
Other survivors include grandparents, Mike and Karen Lyda of Grand Junction, Colo., and Doyle and Dorothy Hunt of Grand Island; and great-grandparents, Raymond and Marie Cole of Grand Junction, Colo., and Ethel Hunt and R.S. Frank Buckle, both of Worland, Wyo.
Darrell Sternberg
BOONEVILLE, Mo. -- Darrell William Sternberg, 74, of Booneville, Mo., died Thursday, March 4, 2004, in Booneville.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Darrell Sternberg was born in Ulysses on March 8, 1929, to William and Edna Sternberg. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian Francis, on May 10, 1994.
Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Pamela Sternberg; four daughters, Ronda Sternberg of Fairfax, Va., Judy Sternberg of Omaha, Valerie Bragg of St. Paul and Kimberly Sternberg of Aurora, Colo.; two sons, Bill Sternberg of Mitchell and Darrin Freeman of Omaha; and a sister, Beverly Nelson of Waverly.
Douglas Zastrow
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Douglas W. Zastrow, 44, of Sioux Falls, S.D., died March 3, 2004.
Services were Friday at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Thomas Ryan will officiate.
Mr. Zastrow was born Jan. 2, 1960, at Grand Island to Richard and Marilyn Zastrow.
Survivors of the immediate family include his parents of Grand Island; a sister, Sue Nagy of Martinez, Calif., and three brothers, David of Lincoln, Paul of St. Paul, Minn., and Stuart of Omaha.
He is also survived by a grandmother, Dorothy Vanek of Grand Island.
He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1978.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Parish Center or Central Catholic High School.
Eva Smith
Eva J. Smith, 80, of Grand Island died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Eric Ford will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedarview cemetery near Doniphan.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Smith was born on April 10, 1918, to Archie L. and Eva May (Gray) Lowry in Doniphan. She grew up and was educated at Grand Island Senior High. She graduated in 1937.
She married
Hyle J. Smith on Dec. 6, 1941, in Yuma, Ariz. The couple lived in many states and also in Japan due to his military service. He died in 1966. She moved to Grand Island in 1969. She began working for the Nebraska Veterans Home. She later worked for the Sleepy Inn. She also worked for Ramada Inn, where she was an assistant housekeeper. She retired in 1983.
She enjoyed gardening and reading.
Survivors include a son, Dane Smith of Grand Island; a daughter, Patricia Sorensen of McGregor, Minn.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Alice Brosco of Suisun, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Michael.
'Bill' Vecera
William "Bill" J. Vecera, 78, formerly of Sidney, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Lincoln. The Rev. Michael Houlihan will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Vecera was born Oct. 17, 1919, in Verdigre to Joseph and Minnie (Havlicek) Vecera. He graduated from Verdigre High School in 1938.
He received medical training at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings and St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. He worked as an anesthetist at the Memorial Hospital in Sidney before retiring in 1985.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and World War II. He was a member of the Sidney V.F.W.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine (Mewes) Vecera of Grand Island; one daughter, Laurie Vecera of Alliance; and two sisters, Frances Kucera of Lincoln and Marcella Stack of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Rudloff.
Bertha Clay
BROKEN BOW -- Bertha Clay, 92, of Merna, formerly of Broken Bow, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, with the Rev. Doug Jones officiating. A Rebekah service will also be held.
Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary, which is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Clay was born Jan. 9, 1906, in Round Valley to Egbert and Tilda (Englesgjerd) Hall. She spent her childhood years in Custer County. Following her mother's death in 1918, the family moved to a farm west of Broken Bow. She married
Lorin Clay in 1928.
She was a member of the Broken Bow Rebekah Lodge No. 110 and served as Noble Grand.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Verna and Bob Lewis of Merna; son-in-law, Jerry Eberle of Broken Bow, a sister, Cecil Elliott of Greeley, CO.; a brother, George Hall of Oregon; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Marjory Myers and brother-in-law, Harold Clay.
