Greeta Hauke
BURWELL -- Greeta P. Hauke, 95, of Burwell died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice or the Community Memorial Health Center.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Julia New
Julia Clara New, 88, of Lakeview Nursing Center, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at the center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Urban Schmitt will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Mrs. New was born on Feb. 25, 1909, at Spalding to John and Theresa Riebslager. She was educated up until the eighth grade at Spalding Academy.
She married
Charles New on Jan. 4, 1925, at Logan, Iowa. They lived in Logan, Iowa, until moving to Pacific Beach, Wash., and then Albion. They farmed in the Greeley and Boone County areas most of their lives. They moved to Cedar Rapids, where they retired. She moved to Grand Island in 1987 to be near her daughters and entered Lakeview Nursing Center in 1996.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
Survivors include one son, Jim New of Columbia, La.; three daughters, Dorothy Carlson of Fremont and Doris Kraus and Bernice (Mrs. Vermoyne) Wiese, both of Grand Island; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Agnes Shaffart of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Tom and Charles Jr.; one grandson; two brothers; and six sisters.
Letha Reyner
MARQUETTE -- Letha Marie Reyner, 64, of Marquette died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Melvin Zichek will officiate. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Reyner was born on Jan. 9, 1933, in North Platte to Levi George and Abbie Mae (Winkler) Page. She grew up in various communities and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1951.
She married
George A. Reyner on April 6, 1952, in Grand Island. They lived in the Marquette area, where they farmed.
Mrs. Reyner was a member of the Methodist Church and the Marquette school board for nine years. She was a charter member of the Marquette Booster Club and a lifetime honorary member of the Nebraska PTA. She worked at the Marquette school library and volunteered at the Coffee Pot Cafe in Marquette.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Greg Reyner, Earl Reyner and Levi Reyner, all of Marquette; four daughters, Jana White, June Brophy and Jill (Mrs. Charles) Cadwallader, all of Marquette, and Jody (Mrs. Gerald) Carpenter of Dunning; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Gilbert Page of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Bill) Ramey of Logan, N.M., and Maxine (Mrs. Ron) Bock of Albuquerque, N.M.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant sisters, Willa and Ellen Page.
Mary Stowell
ORD -- Mary Adell Stowell, 89, of Ord died Dec. 20, 1997, at the Valley County Nursing Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Valley County Hospital Foundation.
Mrs. Stowell was born on July 19, 1908, in Valley County to John and Iva (Labart) Moul. She was educated at a country school in Valley County.
She married
William Herman Stowell on Dec. 30, 1925, at her family's home in Valley County. They lived on a farm in the Springdale area of Valley County until 1949, when they moved to a farm in the Sumpter District of Valley County. They moved into Ord in 1963. Mr. Stowell died on Jan. 10, 1983.
Mrs. Stowell was a member of the Ord United Methodist Church and attended the first Sunday school class in the church. She was a member of United Methodist Women and a charter member of the Springdale Kinningston Extension Club. She enjoyed crocheting afghans.
Survivors include two sons, W.L. Stowell of Orleans, Mass., and Robert D. Stowell of Ord; two daughters, Wilma L. Bradley of Huntsville, Texas, and Iva Jo Stowell of Spokane, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Nelle Covert and Jane Toben.
Joseph Bosler
OMAHA -- Joseph M. Bosler, 91, of Omaha died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at the Thomas Fitzgerald Veterans Home in Omaha.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Maplewood Methodist Church in Omaha. The Rev. Fred Richart will officiate. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Floyd Smith
EDGAR -- Floyd George Smith, 78, of Edgar, formerly of Arcadia, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Community Care Center in Edgar.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Arcadia Congregational Church. The Rev. Wayne Rouse will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Williams Funeral Home in Edgar and from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Smith was born on April 27, 1919, at Exeter to Harry William and Mary Maude (Bubak) Smith. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1938. He moved to Detroit and worked in a steel mill.
He married
Viola Mae Nelson on July 4, 1941, at Napoleon, Ohio. They lived in Michigan until he entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 20, 1944. He was stationed in Manila, Philippines, and Osaka, Japan. He was discharged in October 1946.
He returned to Arcadia and operated a Texaco service station until 1950, when he and his wife built Smith Chevrolet. He ran the Chevrolet dealership, a Red Wing boats dealership, service station and mechanic and body shop until the early 1970s, when he sold the businesses. He then farmed north of town until retiring in 1996.
He played bass guitar in a country and western band and for amateur programs. He painted many of the signs for the town and dabbled in oil painting.
For many years, he ran the score clock for Arcadia basketball games and sideline markers for football games. He played American Legion baseball and built stock cars.
He was a member and past officer of American Legion Post 251. He served on the Valley County Selective Service Board, village board and Arcadia school board. He was a substitute rural mail carrier for more than 30 years and a member of the Arcadia Fire Department and the Congregational Church.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carole Jean (Mrs. Jerry) Shuck of Edgar; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry Smith of Beatrice and Larry Smith of Blue Springs; and one sister, Vesper Jaruske of Ansley.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
John Gelvin
PLEASANT HILL, Mo. -- John B. Gelvin, 53, of Pleasant Hill, Mo., died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at Cass Medical Center in Harrisonville, Mo.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Concordia, Kan. The Rev. Joe Rostollan will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery at Concordia.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Chapel in Concordia.
