U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Harriet Coble

BROKEN BOW -- Harriet Elaine Coble, 74, of Broken Bow died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow following a recent diagnosis of cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

A memorial has been established to the Harriet Coble Memorial Fund.

Mrs. Coble was born on Nov. 25, 1924, at Round Valley to Henry and May (Daugherty) Engelsgjerd. She attended Round Valley District 66 School through the eighth grade.

She stayed in Broken Bow during the week with her Grandmother Engelsgjerd to attend Broken Bow High School. She graduated in June 1942 and then worked as a clerk in the Mynor Variety Store, did office work for Farm Security and worked at the Security State Bank.

She married Lewis Howard Coble on March 9, 1946, at Salina, Kan.

She enjoyed attending auctions and playing bingo. Each November, she and her husband tended the door at the annual One-Box Past Shooters Appreciation Party.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the 80th Division National Auxiliary.

Survivors include one daughter, Marlyn Coble of Broken Bow; two sons, Marvin and Gary, both of Broken Bow; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Her husband died on July 13, 1998.

Charles Fuehrer

CENTRAL CITY -- Charles Sidney Fuehrer, 70, of Central City died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion United Methodist Church in Archer. The Rev. Barbara Hart will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Memorials are suggested to the Palmer Public School Endowment Fund and the church.

Mr. Fuehrer was born on May 10, 1928, in St. Michael to Calvin and Lydia (Glause) Fuehrer. He grew up in the St. Michael are and moved to the Chapman area around 1940. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1945.

He married Roma Ehlers on Oct. 23, 1949, in Grand Island. The couple farmed for many years in the Worms area. Mr. Fuehrer retired from farming in 1993 and moved to Central City.

He was a 50-year member of the Archer Zion United Methodist Church and a member of the Platt-Duetsche in Grand Island. He served on the District 42 school board for 10 years and on the Palmer school board for 12 years. He enjoyed attending all kinds of sporting activities. He also enjoyed reading.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Michael of Archer, Russell of Grand Island and Randall of Abie; two daughters, Susan (Mrs. George) Altenburg of Cove, Ore., and Dixie Fuehrer of Grand Island; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Adeline Petton of Hemet, Calif.; and one brother, Calvin Fuehrer of Grand Island.

Mr. Fuehrer was preceded in death by one sister, LaVon Harmoney.

Ida Gascho

CAIRO -- Ida Gascho, 90, of Cairo died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wood River Mennonite Church with the Rev. Denton R. Jantzi officiating. Burial will be in the Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo.

Memorials are suggested to the Wood River Good Samaritan Center or the church.

Miss Gascho was born on March 6, 1908, near Cairo to Joseph and Jacobina (Roth) Gascho. She attended District 37 School near Cairo. She spent her early adulthood raising nieces and nephews. She moved with her sister Katie and father from the old Gascho home place to Cairo in 1948. She and a sister cared for her father and a niece, who had epilepsy after a high fever at a young age.

She took medication for arthritis in the mid-1950s, which led to major surgery in 1955.

She was known for the many quilts she pieced and quilted. She was a caregiver from age 22 to age 46. She suffered a stroke in March 1994, which left her left side partially paralyzed.

She was a member of the Wood River Mennonite Church and was a Bible school teacher.

Survivors include one brother, Harry Gascho of Goshen, Ind.

She was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

Esther Kraus

KEARNEY -- Esther A. Kraus, 87, of Kearney died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services will be private.

Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kraus was born on Sept. 17, 1911, in Sargent to Forrest and Bertha (Yeigh) Abbott. She graduated from Sargent High School, the University of Nebraska and the University of Southern California.

She married C. Newton Kraus in 1936 at Providence, R.I. She retired in 1975 after 35 years of teaching at Westerville; Bryn Mawr, Pa.; Providence, R.I.; and East Lyme, Conn.

After an absence of nearly 50 years, she moved back to Sargent in 1983. She moved to Kearney a year and a half ago.

She was a member of the Christian Church, Retired Teachers Association and Kensington Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Brisack of Houston; one son, Stephen Y. Kraus of Kearney; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Janice James and Margaret Abbott of Sargent.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Glenn McKnight

COMSTOCK -- Glenn Roy McKnight, 64, of Comstock died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial will be in Douglas Grove cemetery at Comstock.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to a fund for the grandchildren's education.

Mr. McKnight was born on Sept. 24, 1934, south of Berwyn to Forest and Anna May (Armstrong) McKnight. He was educated at Berwyn, Ash Creek, Allen school district and Westerville High School. After his education, he worked with his parents on the family farm.

He married Rosalie Blakeman on June 10, 1962, in Broken Bow. They lived on a farm east of Weissert. They moved to the No Idle Time Ranch near Comstock in 1963. Mr. McKnight farmed and ranched all his life.

He also worked for the Custer County Highway Department from 1979 to 1999 and helped with the construction of the big horse barn at the Custer County Fairgrounds.

He was a member of Ord Elks Lodge 2371 and the Southwest Wagon Train and was an associate member of the Veterans Club in Ord. He was an avid hunter of all game.

Survivors include his wife; one son, William McKnight of Ogallala; two daughters, Tammy (Mrs. Dave) Hendrickson of Broken Bow and Karen Hoffman of Portsmouth, Iowa; a foster son, Chancy Swick of Winnemucca, Nev.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel Fisher of Beaver City.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Renee Tsukada; two granddaughters; and one brother, Lloyd.

Marian Mohr

AURORA -- Marian Alice Mohr, 78, of Aurora died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora Assembly of God Church. The Rev. Jim Garfield will officiate. Graveside services will be at the Aurora cemetery with the Rev. Frank Breise officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mrs. Mohr was born on Sept. 17, 1920, at Aurora to Edwin and Cynthia (Ballard) Deal. She grew up and was educated at Aurora.

She married Elmer Eberhardt on July 23, 1938, at York. They lived in Aurora, and she worked for many years as a cook at the SYA Cafe, Aurora schools and Red and White Grocery Store. She also worked at the Bremer Center. Mr. Eberhardt died on June 28, 1965.

She married Peter Ray Mohr on Sept. 20, 1991, at Grand Island. They lived in Aurora.

She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loved to dance, and the couple spent many evenings at the Eagles Club in Grand Island.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gary of Aurora, Daniel of Blair and Michael of Aurora; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Deal of Oregon; and two sisters, Maxine Gremm of Broken Bow and Nettie Eaton of Kansas City, Mo.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
