BASKING RIDGE, N.J. - Carleton R. Metcalf Jr., formerly of Concord, died March 19. He was born in Concord, the son of Carleton and May Metcalf. He was raised in Concord and also lived in New London and summered on Lake Sunapee. He moved to Basking Ridge, N.J., in 1996. He attended Saint Paul's School in Concord, Dublin School and the University of New Hampshire. He served in the Navy as Quartermaster during World War II, with tours in the North Atlantic and South Seas of the Pacific. Metcalf worked for Exxon and Gilbarco, retiring from Exxon in 1982 and continuing to work in petroleum sales until 1995. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the late 1980s. He was a member of Saint Paul's Church in Chatham, N.J. His wife, Elizabeth (Nichols) Metcalf, died in 1987. Survivors include a son, Carleton Metcalf III of Boxford, Mass.; a daughter, Marjorie Metcalf of Wayne, Pa.; and a sister, Lucy Woodman of Concord. Memorial services were held Wednesday at Saint Paul's Church in Chatham, N.J. FRANKLIN - LeRoy Charles "Roy" Smith, 60, of River Street, died Wednesday at the Franklin Regional Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Bristol, Conn., the son of Lee and Florence (Ray) Smith. He was raised in Connecticut and lived Lunenburg, Mass., for many years and in New Ipswich before moving to Northfield, where he lived for five years before moving to Franklin. He attended grammar school in Southington, Conn., and graduated from Newington (Conn.) High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., and a master's degree in business administration from Western New England College in Springfield, Mass. Smith worked as a certified computer systems engineer; was involved with artificial intelligence research at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh; worked as a teacher and technical project manager; worked as a professor of business and technology at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, Colby-Sawyer College in New London and Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester; worked as manager of many business and information technologies from Cigna Connecticut General in Hartford, Conn., from 1970 to 1989; worked as engineer manager Digital Equipment Corp. in Maynard, Mass., from 1989 to 1992; and worked as Smith Associates in Northfield in 1992. He was active with Carnegie-Mellon University. He enjoyed the outdoors, the ocean, writing and reading poetry, and music, especially jazz. Survivors include his mother of Southington, Conn.; four sons, Erik Smith of Concord, Allan Smith of Lakeville, Mass., Kurt Smith of Moultonboro and Scott Smith of Fitchburg, Mass.; a stepson, Jeffrey Hamer of Fitchburg, Mass.; his longtime companion, Rita Carlson of Northfield; eight grandchildren; and three aunts, an uncle and many cousins. His father died in 1996; a brother, Lawrence Smith, died in 1980; and a daughter, Kristin Smith, died in 1999. Calling hours will not be held. Services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road, Tilton. The Rev. Duke Snyder will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring at the South End Burying Ground in Southington, Conn. Roland E. Allen, PENACOOK

PENACOOK - Roland E. Allen, 82, died Wednesday in Bedford after a long illness. He was born in Andover, Conn., the son of John and Sarah (Shackford) Allen. He lived in Coventry, Conn., before living in Penacook for 54 years. He graduated from Windham High School in Willimantic, Conn. in 1938. Allen founded the Penacook Fibre Co. in 1940 with his father and Russell Hinman. He served in the Army during World War II and received the Bronze Star in 1990 for achievement in ground combat in the European and African Middle Eastern Theater of Operations. He was a member of the United Church of Penacook, where he served as deacon and on the board of trustees for many years. He was active in the Penacook Community Center and received the Citizen of the Year award in 2001 for his part in creating and building the Penacook Youth Center. He was actively involved in the Merrimack Valley School System, which he served as chairman of the board for the Penacook High School and Merrimack Valley High School. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary (White) Allen of Penacook; two sons, James Allen of Penacook and Richard Allen of Concord; two daughters, Carol Breault of Penacook and Beth Allen of Henniker; two sisters, Louise McGrale of Orange City, Fla., and Persis Blythe of Arlington, Texas; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Everett Allen and Rosco Allen, and two sisters, Carol Rose and Sarah Rose, died previously. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wendell J. Butt Funeral Home, 42 Washington St., Penacook. Memorial services will be held April 12 at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Penacook. The Rev. John Westhaver will officiate. EAST ANDOVER - Albert F. Hoyt Sr., 82, died Wednesday at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton. He was born in Franklin, the son of Franklin and Carrie (Keniston) Hoyt. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1938. He lived in East Andover most of his life before moving to the New Hampshire Veterans Home in 1998. He served in the Army during World War II and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Hoyt was a farmer and later worked as a carpenter and construction worker for many contractors, including D.D. Snyder. He served as selectman for Andover for many years. He was a member of the Highland Lake Grange, the East Andover Fish and Game Club and East Andover Volunteer Fire Department. He was a life member of the Franklin VFW Post No. 1698 and a member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks BPOE No. 1280 of Franklin. Survivors include two sons, Richard Hoyt of Franklin and Albert Hoyt Jr. of Newport News, Va.; two daughters, Carol Saenz of Newport News, Va., and Ann Hoyt of Lady Lake, Fla.; a brother, Robert Hoyt of Franklin; two sisters, Pansey Pebbles of Concord and Betty Corneau of Danbury; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. FARMINGTON, Conn. - Norma (Craig) Entwistle-Ebbs, 82, died March 5. She was born in Dublin, the daughter of Alfred and Ethel (Messier) Craig. She graduated from Simonds Free High School in 1938 and attended Plymouth State College in Plymouth. She worked as a waitress, a saleswoman for many products, a housekeeper and a nanny. She enjoyed hiking, playing the organ, playing games, corresponding with friends and studying the Bible. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to Mexico, where she helped build a church. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she taught Sabbath school classes and participated in all church activities. She served as women's ministries director for Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Survivors include two sons, Mark Ebbs of Henniker and Mike Ebbs of Billerica, Mass.; seven daughters, Debra Jo Morello of Warner, Constance Gallagher of Seattle, Dorothy Gray of Plainville, Conn., Kathleen Johnson of Buxton, Maine, Sherrilyn Wallerce of Winthrop, Mass., Stephanie Stande of Bedford, Mass., and Michelle Baia of Billerica, Mass.; a sister, Eleanor Posselt of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Lewis Ebbs Jr., and a brother, Harold Craig, died previously. Her body was donated for medical education and research to the University of Connecticut Medical School. Memorial services will be held May 11 at 11 a.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 97 Broad St., Plainville, Conn. Memorial donations may be made to the local Salvation Army.

EPSOM - Waler C. Harrison Jr., 72, of River Road died yesterday at his home following a long illness. He was born in Waterbury, Conn., the son of Walter C. Harrison and Gertrude (Jackson) Harrison, and graduated from Woodbury High School in Woodbury, Conn. He had lived in Epsom since the early 1960s. He worked for the St. Pierre Oil Co. in Southbury, Conn., and was the past president of the FFA. He worked for Agway Oil Co. for more than 20 years. He was a dairy farmer for many years and was a lifetime member of the Ox Teamsters Association and the Deerfield Fair Association. He was an active member of the Merrimack County 4-H Working Steers & Oxen. He is survived by a son, Christopher Harrison of Contoocook; a daughter, Tina Harrison of Epsom; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Robert Harrison of Southbury, Conn.; and his longtime companion, Marguerite King of Epsom. His wife, Dorothy Harrison, died in 1991. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday at the Perkins Funeral Home & Monument Co., 60 Main St., Pittsfield, from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the New Rye Congregational Church at 11 a.m. The Rev. HEBRON - M. Louise Coulombe, 79, formerly of Concord, died Thursday at the Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth. She was born in Concord, the daughter of William and Mary (Baker) Giddis. She graduated from Concord High School in 1941 and worked at Sprague Electric for 30 years as a quality control supervisor until she retired in 1990. She was past president of the Disabled American Veterans of Concord. She lived in Concord until five years ago, when she moved to Hebron. She is survived by two sons, Frederick W. Coulombe of Concord and Bruce W. Coulombe of Manchester; four daughters, Elizabeth Loos of Hebron, Diana M. Dow of Mullins, S.C., Patricia A. Howlett of Charlotte, N.C., and Rose M. Phillips of Tallahassee, Fla.; 21 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Frederick W. Coulombe of Concord; a daughter, Roberta Coulombe; and a son, Ernest A. Coulombe, died previously. Visiting hours will be held tomorrow from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St., Concord. Funeral services will follow in the chapel of the Waters Funeral Home. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. WEARE - Diane L. (Chaput) Parker, 40, died of cancer yesterday at Elliot Hospital in Manchester. Born in Manchester, she was the daughter of Donald R. and Gloria (Bissonnette) Chaput. She graduated from Goffstown High School and had lived in Weare since 1987. She is survived by her husband of eight years, Michael R. Parker of Weare; two daughters, Tiffany Roy and Tanya Roy, both of Weare; a granddaughter, Mikayla Diane Kenison of Weare; her parents of Weare; three brothers, Donald N. Chaput of Goffstown, Daniel A. Chaput of Hillsboro and David H. Chaput of Goffstown; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Carl E. Quinn of Sunset Avenue died Friday at the Concord Hospice House. He was born in Macomb, Ill., son of the late John E. and Elizabeth G. (Sullivan) Quinn, and graduated from Macomb High School in 1936. He earned his bachelor of science degree in finance in 1940 from the University of Notre Dame, where he was a member of the marching band. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, working in finance. His professional career was in the food service industry. He moved to New Hampshire from Chicago in 1966 to become vice president of sales at J.C. Pitman Co. in Bow. He retired in 1983 after 17 years with the company. After retirement, he wintered in Tequesta, Fla., for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 112, Concord, and a member of Monsignor Buckley Assembly 4th Degree. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Esther Quinn of Concord; a son, Thomas Quinn of Concord; two daughters, Kathleen Arch of Suffield, Conn., and Marcia Regan of Concord; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Eugene Quinn of Newport Beach, Calif.; a niece and two nephews. Visiting hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St., Concord.
