William O. Meckley, NEW LONDON

Saturday, January 23, 1999

NEW LONDON - William O. Meckley, 81, of New London and Marblehead, Mass., died Thursday at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.

He was born in Philadelphia, the son of John and Margaret Meckley, and graduated in 1940 from the College of Engineering of the University of Michigan.

He worked in the aircraft engine division of General Electric Co. for 41 years, retiring in 1981. During his career, he received several awards for his work in developing, licensing and marketing aircraft engines. He was also involved in trade negotiations as aerospace industry representative to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

After his retirement, he remained active and involved in many sports, studies, projects and community affairs. He was a co-founder of the Illiad program, which offers continuing courses of study for retirees under the sponsorship of Dartmouth College.

He enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing and golf. For the past 14 years, he was a volunteer track official for the Dartmouth College track team.

He was the widower of Virginia (Gove) Meckley.

Survivors include two sons, John Meckley of Weston, Conn., and Robert Meckley of Marblehead, Mass.; a daughter, Janet Anderson of Yarmouth, Maine; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Old North Church, 41 Washington St., Marblehead, Mass.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10019-4374.

The Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home of J.S. Waterman & Sons of Marblehead, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie S. Ryan, LACONIA

Saturday, January 23, 1999

LACONIA - Marjorie S. Ryan, 84, of Union Avenue and formerly of Gilford, died Thursday at home.

She was born in Tilton, the daughter of Gilbert and Clara (Sullaway) Manning. She had been a resident of the Lakes Region for many years.

She was employed as an inspector at Allen Rogers for many years, retiring in 1971.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Laconia-Gilford. She was also a member of the Pheasant Ridge Country Club.

Her husband, John Ryan, died in 1996. A son, Charles Williams Jr., died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Colin "Tony" Williams of Belmont; four daughters, Patrecia Gray of Keene, Marianne Stanton of Ossipee, Norma Raymond of Voluntown, Conn., and Patrecia Morin of Laconia; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Manning of Tilton and Harold Manning of Canterbury; and several nephews and nieces.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the family lot in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Health and Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 578, Laconia 03247-0578.

The Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home in Laconia is in charge of arrangements.

Ronald E. Martin, PITTSFIELD

Saturday, January 23, 1999

PITTSFIELD - Ronald E. "Sam" Martin, 62, of Thompson Road, died suddenly Thursday.

He was born in Wolfeboro, the son of Maurice and Doris (Keniston) Chagnon.

He was a 1955 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a lifelong resident of the Barnstead-Pittsfield area.

He worked at the Concord YMCA for the past several years as the maintenance manager. He worked prior to that in the maintenance department at Pittsfield High School and at Banks Chevrolet as the body shop manager.

He had been a 4-H leader and was active with the 4-H organization for more than 20 years.

He enjoyed snowmobiling and, years ago, he raced cars at different tracks throughout the state.

Survivors include his wife, Linda (Barton) Martin of Pittsfield; two sons, Jeffrey Martin of Concord and Dana Martin of Pittsfield; three daughters, Rhonda Thibeault of Concord, Tracy Martin of Hill and Doris Martin of Deerfield; a brother, Gordon Martin of Pittsfield; three grandchildren; and many niece and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the South Barnstead Christian Fellowship, Route 126, Barnstead.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in his memory to the 4-H Working Steers/Merrimack County Oxbows, c/o Bob Pearson, 118 Little Hill Road, Webster 03303.

Bradford W. Bowker, GILFORD

Saturday, January 23, 1999

GILFORD - Bradford W. Bowker, 76, of Old Lake Shore Road, died Thursday at the St. Francis Home in Laconia.

He was born in Dighton, Mass., the son of Daniel and Louise (Simmons) Bowker, had been a resident of the Lakes Region since 1965.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the co-owner and manager of the Lakes Region Laundry and Cleaners in Laconia for 25 years.

He was a member of the Gilford Community Church, past master and former secretary of Mt. Lebanon Lodge No. 32 F & A.M. He was also a member of Chocorua Lodge No. 51 of Lakeport and the Wilkins-Smith Post No. 1 American Legion of Laconia.

The was the widower of Ruth (Avery) Bowker, who died in 1990. His first wife, Virginia (Richardson) Bowker died in 1969.

Survivors include a daughter, Ramona White of Laconia; two grandchildren; and two nieces.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held in the spring in Park Cemetery in Tilton.

Westly E. Sheldon, PETERBOROUGH

Tuesday, January 26, 1999

PETERBOROUGH - Westly E. Sheldon, 89, of Greenfield Road, died yesterday at the Monadnock Community Hospital, Peterborough.

He was born in Plainville, Conn., the son of Earle Westly and Cora (Livingston) Sheldon.

He moved to Bennington at an early age and attended local schools there, as well as schools in Milford and the Mt. Hermon School for Boys in Northfield, Mass.

Before World War II, he worked for the U.S. Post Office, and was an avid amateur pilot and motorcycle enthusiast.

During the war, he served in Douglas, Ga., as a flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1945, he traveled to Greece, and established a malaria control aerial program for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. He later joined the U.S. State Department as a foreign service officer, and served for 30 years in Greece, Pakistan, Lebanon, Italy, Iran and Washington, D.C. He returned to Peterborough after retiring in 1977.

He was a life member of the Congregational Church, Bennington.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary (Woodvine) Sheldon of Peterborough; a daughter, Margaret Chase of Henniker; a son, William Sheldon of Jaffrey; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Congregational Church, Bennington. The Rev. Daniel Poling, pastor, will officiate. Spring burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Bennington.

Donations may be made to the Peterborough Ambulance Service, Peterborough 03458 or to the Congregational Church, Bennington 03242.

Earl G. Dearborn, TILTON

Tuesday, January 26, 1999

TILTON - Earl G. Dearborn, 89, formerly of Tilton and Franklin, died Sunday at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton.

He was born in Franklin and lived there until moving to Tilton several years ago.

He was a self-employed painter for many years, working throughout the Twin Rivers area.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel (Davis) Dearborn.

He is survived by two stepsons, Stanley Parris of Franklin and Max Parris of Missouri; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three stepsisters, Jean Herman of Broomfield, Colo., Barbara Laughy of Lawton, Okla., and Neoma Robert of Northfield.

Spring burial will be in Franklin Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the New Hampshire Veterans Home, P.O. Box 229, Tilton 03276.

Thibault-Neun Funeral Home in Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Dazet, GOSHEN

Monday, January 25, 1999

GOSHEN - Donald Dazet, 70, died Saturday at his home following a long illness.

He was born in Greenwich Village in New York City, the son of Thomas and Sabina (Galliano) Dazet.

He attended St. Catherine of Sienna School and Andrew Jackson High School in St. Albans, N.Y. He is a graduate of Mechanic's Institute in New York City.

He served in the U.S. Navy and participated in the Atom bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946.

He was a union bricklayer in New York City for 25 years and established a mason contracting business on Long Island.

He and his family moved to Goshen in 1979. He owned and operated Dazet Masonry and did work for many contractors in the area. His son, Michael, still runs the business.

He was a member of the Watch and Clock Collectors Association. He enjoyed camping and salt water fishing. He was an avid gardenerand won awards for his sunflowers and vegetables.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Jean Marie Osani of Long Island.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Patricia (Watterson) Dazet; three sons, Christopher Dazet of Newfield, Maine, Stephen Dazet of New Hampton and Michael Dazet of Grantham; eight grandchildren; and a niece.

Friends may call tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Chadwick Funeral Home 174 Main St., New London.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the N.H. Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Sunapee Hospice, P.O. Box 2209, New London 03257.

Vilada Dickson, GILFORD

Monday, January 25, 1999

GILFORD - Vilada Dickson, 83, of Old Lake Shore Road, died Saturday at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.

She was born in Laconia, the daughter of Albert and Georgianna (Venne) Laurent. She lived in Portland, Conn., for 29 years before returning to the Lakes Region in 1980.

She was a homemaker and a self-employed seamstress. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Laconia.

Survivors include her husband, Clement Dickson of Gilford; a son, Roger Dickson of Gilford; two brothers, Norman Laurent of Noel Laurent, both of Laconia; two sisters, Rena Roy of Franklin and Doris Haynes of Norwalk, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Laconia. The Rev. Adrien Longchamps will officiate.

Spring burial will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Laconia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Ave., Laconia 03246.
