MIAMI - William Hobart Sumner, a former area resident, died on Sept. 10 in Miami, Fla.
He was born in Palo Alto, Calif., the son of Charles Kaiser and Alice Maude. He graduated from Palo Alto High School and attended Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 1932.
After a brief period in New York City, where he worked at Bloomingdale's, he moved to Reading, Mass., where he began his career with New England Telephone & Telegraph in Boston after the depression. He sold telephones door-to-door and rose to vice president of salary administration.
After retiring in 1975, he and his wife, Jeanette, made several trips to South America to visit friends. They eventually settled in Hopkinton, where he enjoyed playing golf at the Dustin Hills Country Club and fishing.
In 1993, he and his wife moved to Miami, Fla. He enjoyed golf and fishing, was a fan of many sports and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox. He also enjoyed playing the stock market and buying and selling for his "cats and dogs" portfolio.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette (Swenson) Sumner; a son William Sumner Jr.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Miami, Fla., on Sept. 16.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Geraldine M. Locke, HOPKINTON

HOPKINTON - Geraldine M. Locke, 83, of Moran Road, died on Thursday at home after a short illness.
She was born in Hopkinton, the daughter of James and Gladys (Purington) Locke. She was a lifelong resident of Hopkinton. She graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1935 and was a member of Countryside Community Church of Contoocook for many years.
There are no calling hours.
Graveside services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery in Weare. The Rev. LaFayette Pinckney will officiate.
The Waters Funeral Home, Concord, is in charge of the arrangements.
George E. Porter, HILLSBORO

HILLSBORO - George E. Porter, 49, of Hillsboro, died Friday at the Lahey Hitchcock Clinic in Burlington, Mass.
He was born in Concord, the son of the late Robert Porter Sr. and Edith Grace (Gilmore) Porter.
He'd lived in Hillsboro for the past 12 years.
He was a software engineer for Progreee Software Company in Nashua. He was an avid gardener and loved walking in the woods.
He was a graduate of Buckinham Brown and Nichols High School, Class of 1968; Clark University in 1973; and completed doctoral studies at Dartmouth College.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Marjorie Ann (Dagostino) Porter of Hillsboro; a son, Benjamin Porter of Hillsboro; a daughter, Katherine Ann Porter of Hillsboro; two brothers, Dr. Robert Porter Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and William Porter of Wapplingers Falls, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home, 32 School Street, Hillsboro.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the East Washington Baptist Church. The Rev. Jack Ward will officiate.
Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made in his name to a charity of one's choice.
The Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

PEMBROKE - Paul Franklin Finnegan, 49, of Pembroke, died yesterday at his home.
He was born in Berlin, the son of Howard and Melba (Sullivan) Finnegan. He was a 1968 graduate of Berlin High School, a 1972 graduate of the University of New Hampshire and a 1980 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. He is an ABD from Boston College School of Social Work. He was a past president of the New Hampshire chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
He was formerly employed at the Hitchcock Clinic in behavioral health services.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Renaud-Finnegan of Pembroke; two sons, Brendan and Daniel Finnegan of Pembroke; two nephews, one niece; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main Street, Concord.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Loudon Road, Concord.

NEW LONDON - Alice E. Leith, 97, of Edmunds Road, died Tuesday at New London Hospital, daughter of William and Elizabeth (French) Naldrett. She lived in New London with one of her daughters.
She was born in New York City and became a resident of New London in 1976.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Leith, who died in 1979; two sons, Edward Leith, who died in 1940, and John Leith, who died in 1982, and a granddaughter in 1995. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Murphy of East Douglas, Mass., Alice Leith of New London, and Nancy Ragonese of Southbury, Conn., and New London; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 174 Main St., New London. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated tomorrow at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Main Street, New London. The Rev. Richard Lower, is pastor and celebrant.
Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Middle Village, Long Island, N.Y. tomorrow at 3 p.m.

LACONIA - Paul Maher, 63, of Academy Street, died Monday in Belmont.
He was born in Manchester, the son of Donat and Regina (Barnade) Maher. He had lived in Laconia since the 1970s.
He is survived by a sister, Lucille Caza of Manchester.
He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

Services will be held at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, today at 11:30 a.m.
Private burial was held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Manchester.

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. - Maybeth H. Colby, 66, a former area resident, died Sept. 9 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was born in Bow, the daughter of Earl and Ella Hemphill. She lived on Cape Cod, Mass., for many years and spent the last 22 years living in Mocksville, N.C.
She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Colby; a brother, Carol Hemphill; a sister, Arlene Lull; and a niece.
She is survived by two daughters, Christine Rycroft and Stacy Parks, both of Mocksville, N.C.; two granddaughters; three grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held Oct. 9 at Green's Cemetery in Bow Center.

HENNIKER - L. Sonja Pick, 78, a former area resident, died Thursday in a hospital in Portland, Maine, after a short illness.
She was born in Amsterdam, Holland, and came to the United States with her family in 1962.
She received a master's degree in psychology and social work from the University of Zurich.
She worked for the state of New Hampshire as a senior psychiatric social worker in drug and alcohol treatment facilities for 16 years.
She was interested in gardening, crafts, reading and political affairs.
She is survived by a daughter, Marcelle Pick of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; two sons, Ralph Pick of Virginia Beach, Va., and Evan Pick of Norfolk, Va.; five grandchildren; a brother, Rudy Blans of Bussum, Holland; and a sister, Marcelle Van Den Berg of Gex, France.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the home of Barbara and Durwood French of Henniker.
The Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland, Maine, is in charge of arrangements.

VENICE, Fla. - Donald McAlpine, 77, a former area resident, died on Monday.
He was born and raised in Naugatuck, Conn., and graduated from Peddie Preparatory School. He was a 1944 graduate of Harvard University.
The original designer of the Pitco frialator, he was vice president and senior design engineer for J.C. Pitman and Sons, Concord, for more than 20 years.
He was an avid sportsman and boatman. He was the senior executive officer, the squadron education officer and the commander of the Amoskeag Power Squadron of New Hampshire.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jacqueline (Gagnon) Lutze; two daughters, Karen Schlotman of Lynnfield, Mass., and Cynthia Greeley of Atlanta; a son, Peter Lutze of Needham, Mass.; five grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard Lutze of Spring Hills, Fla., and Raymond Lutze of Ospre, Fla.
Burial will be held in Venice, Fla.
Arlene McDonald, MERRIMACK

MERRIMACK - Arlene McDonald, 85, of Coventry Court, died yesterday at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua after a short illness.
She was born in South Barre, Vt., the daughter of Charles and Alice (Recor) Owen.
She lived in Merrimack for more than 35 years. She was a clerk at Soucy's Market for 17 years before her retirement and also had worked as a secretary for Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy in Merrimack, and sung in the church choir for many years. She was a life-time member of the North Charlestown Grange and a member of the Joyful Tunes singing group.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert McDonald, who died in 1979.
She is survived by a son, Robert McDonald of Lebanon; three daughters, Sylvia Thurlow-Coyle of Merrimack, Sherry Collins of Tucson, Ariz., and Alice Marzoli of Bow; nine grandchildren, a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the George R. Rivet Funeral Home, 425 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Merrimack, at 11 a.m.
After cremation, burial will be in Last Rest Cemetery, Merrimack, at a later date.
