Gloria I. Alley, 71, of Pleasant Street in Concord, died March 21 at Concord Hospital. She was born in Medford, Mass., the daughter of Clyde and Ethel (Hopkins) Isnor. She graduated 10th in her class from Medford High School in 1947, where she was the class poet and the winner of the English award. She also graduated from Boston University's College of Liberal Arts in 1951, majoring in English. She lived in Sanbornton and later moved to Laconia and then Concord. She was an English teacher sfor many years; a poet and teacher in the Laconia school system during the 1950s; and taught creative writing to advanced fifth- and sixth-graders. She was interested in philosophy and art, writing poetry and was an avid traveler. She spent many years attending writers' conferences in Durham and shared her love of art and literature with children and, later, with prisoners. She was active in leading Great Books discussions while living in Sanbornton. She was a charter member of the New Hampshire Poetry Society and served on its board of directors and as editor of its anthology. She was elected Poet of the Year in 1973. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society in Laconia and was an active member of the community and served on local school boards. She was a former member of the National Education Association and a past member of the Council of World Affairs. She wrote a book of poetry, This Very Madness, published by the Golden Quill Press in 1977. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Alley. Survivors include two nieces, Adrienne Martin, of New Jersey, and Caroline Stamoulis of Carle Place, N.Y.; four grandnieces and two grandnephews. There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held April 13 at 1 p.m. at the Twitchell House, 111 Pleasant St., Concord. The Rev. Dena McPhetres, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Laconia, will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in the family lot in Tower Hill Cemetery, Sanbornton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Humane Society, P.O. Box 572, Laconia 03247. The Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home in Laconia is in charge of arrangements.

Dora M. Belanger, WEBSTER
Wednesday, April 4, 2001
WEBSTER - Dora M. Belanger, 85, died Monday at a local nursing home after a period of failing health. She was born in Manchester, the daughter of J.L. Arsene and Eva (Bergeron) LaBarre. She lived in Manchester most of her life. She was a homemaker and especially enjoyed cooking and crocheting. She is predeceased by her first husband, L. George Jacques, who died in 1978; her second husband, Elde Belanger, who died in 1986; three brothers, George LaBarre, Albert LaBarre and Lucien LaBarre; and two sisters, Alice Knapp and Florette Croteau. Survivors include a stepson, Maurice Belanger of Manchester; three nephews, Albert LaBarre of Hampton, Va., Thomas LaBarre of Naples, Fla., and John Croteau of Newbury; and two nieces, Bernice McInnis of Enfield, Conn., and Evelyn Davis of Warner. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Lakeside Cemetery in Newbury. Memorial donations may be made to Lake Sunapee Home Care and Hospice, P.O. Box 2209, New London 03257. Chadwick Funeral Services of New London is in charge of the arrangements.

Oksana Bendza

Oksana (Gerent) Bendza, 60, of Brookwood Drive, Concord, died Thursday at Concord Hospital. She was born in Poland, the daughter of Wlodzimierz Gerent and Anna (Madej) Rembisz. She worked as a teacher for 32 years until retirement. She moved to the United States in May 1995 to be with her family. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Manchester. She spent much time taking care of her family and was an avid gardener. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Bogdan Bendza of Chicago and Irek Bendza of Portsmouth, R.I.; a daughter, Marta Kucman of East Concord; and three granddaughters, Larysa Kucman of Concord, Natalie Bendza of Chicago and Victoria Bendza of Portsmouth, R.I. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 54 Walnut St., Manchester. Burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Concord. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, New Hampshire affiliate, 249 Canal St., Manchester 03101.

William H. Arms

William H. Arms, 91, of Pleasant View Retirement Home in Concord died March 8 at Hospice House in Concord. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 177 N. Main St., Concord. David Keller, pastor, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CRVNA Hospice House, P.O. Box 1797, Concord 03302-1797.

Reginald G. Bartlett, BELMONT

BELMONT - Reginald G. Bartlett, 75, of Randlett Street, died March 29 at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia. He was born in Lovell, Maine, the son of Edward and Alegura (McAllister) Bartlett. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, both in the European and Pacific theaters. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon. He lived in Connecticut for many years, moving to Maine in 1968. He moved to New Hampton in 1971 and to Belmont in 1995. He worked as a lead man for Aavid Engineering before retiring. He was a member of the Odd Fellows of Portland, Conn.; the Wilkins-Smith Post No. 1 of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1670. He was a former member of the Laconia Lodge of Elks No. 876. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ola (Burbank) Bartlett of Belmont; three sons, Walter Bartlett of Yuba City, Calif., Gardiner Bartlett of Sweden, Maine, and Reginald Bartlett of Boscawen; a daughter, Nancy Garland of Ashland; five brothers, Edward Bartlett of Fryeburg, Maine, Ronald Bartlett of Middletown, Conn., Lloyd Bartlett of East Hampton, Conn., H. Wayne Bartlett of Raymond, Maine, and R. Lindon Bartlett of Brownfield, Maine; two sisters, Carlene Colbath of Conway and Sandra Lacy of East Rochester; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Dewhirst Funeral Home, 1061 Union Ave., Laconia. The Rev. Everett Palmer, pastor of the Ashland Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring in Oakland Cemetery in Meredith. FRANKLIN - Sarah M. Dutcher, 90, formerly of Pembroke, died Jan. 17 at Mountain Ridge Center Genesis Eldercare in Franklin. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Green Cemetery, Carlisle, Mass. The Bennett Funeral Home in Concord is in charge of the arrangements.

Sharon Gagne, 54, of Concord and a former resident of Berlin and Gorham, died Friday at Concord Hospital. She was born in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Dell and Alice (St. Louis) Pitman. She worked for Wiita Group Real Estate, Carlson-Norwood GMAC Real Estate and Northern New England Real Estate Network. She also worked at the Concord Elks Club. She was a member of the Concord Board of Realty and the National Board of Realty. She loved to take cruises and was an avid dancer. She is survived by her stepmother, Lollette Pitman of Boscawen; her husband, Theodore Gagne of Hopkinton; a son, Adam Gagne of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Dara Gagne of Center Barnstead; a brother, Don Pitman of Portsmouth; two sisters, Nancy Warren of Concord and Cathy Cameron; four grandchildren; a stepsister, Cornelia Pitman of Boscawen; her mother-in-law, Thelma Gagne of Berlin; and nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial services will be held in the spring at the Contoocook Village Cemetery. Frank A. Bergh, BRISTOL

BRISTOL - Frank A. Bergh, 93, of South Main Street, died yesterday at Franklin Regional Hospital. He was born in Malden, Mass., the son of Edward and Effie (McGreggor) Bergh. He lived in Bristol most his life. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a painting and papering contractor. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post No. 26 of Bristol. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and art work. Survivors include a son, Donald Bergh of Danbury; two daughters, Leona Dickerson of Concord and Lorna Patten of Bristol; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. His wife, Dorothy (Trumbull) Bergh, died previously. Calling hours will not be held. Graveside services will be held in the spring in Homeland Cemetery. Alfred G. Chandler, ANTRIM

ANTRIM - Dr. Alfred George Chandler, 92, died Tuesday at Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough. He was born in Cliftondale, Mass., the son of Henry and Christiana (Toms) Chander of England. He lived in England and worked in the photography business for many years before entering medical school. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire and Tufts Medical School, and completed his residency at Springfield Hospital in Massachusetts. He served as major with the Army Medical Corps during World War II. He established his medical practice in Antrim in 1946, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Antrim Baptist Church. He was a member of the staff at Monadnock Community Hospital, where he established the Anesthesiology Department; was a lifetime member of the New Hampshire Medical Society, the Masonic Temple, and the American Medical Association; was a fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists; a Director Emeritus of the Valley Bank in Hillsboro; and a sponsor of a Cambodian refugee family. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, reading and vacationing on the Maine coast. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Janice (Yarber) Chandler; four daughters, Carol Malcarney of Haddonfield, N.J., Priscilla Shook of Antrim, Susan Ruess of Richmond, Vt., and Nancy Conrey of Lyman, Maine; and seven grandchildren. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 32 School St., Hillsboro. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Antrim Baptist Church in Antrim. The Rev. Dr. Milton Ryder and the Rev. Donald Maughn will officiate. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Antrim. Howard M. Hook, BOSCAWEN

BOSCAWEN - Howard M. Hook, 75, of Oxbow Mobile Home Park, died Monday at his home. He was born in Stamford, Conn., the son of Frank and Gladys Hook. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a radio technician for the New Hampshire State Police for more than 20 years. Years ago, he owned a radio and television repair shop in Contoocook and also worked for Evan's Radio in Bow. He was a member of the American Legion. Survivors include two sons, John Hook and Don Hook, both of Webster; a daughter, June Pecce of Londonderry; two brothers, Robert Hook of Connecticut and Frederick Hook of Georgia; his former wife, Sylvia Hook of Webster, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Alice Whitman and Nancy Hook, died previously. There are no calling hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Affordable Funeral and Cremation Services Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Francis E. Serafin

Francis E. Serafin, 85, of Pinkham B Road in Randolph died Wednesday at the New Hampshire Odd Fellows Home in Concord. He was born in Hartford, Conn., the son of Joseph and Josephine Serafin. He has been a resident of Randolph for 55 years. He worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad and was later employed by the Brown Company and the James River Company as a foreman. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a life member and past commander of the Dupont-Holmes American Legion Post No. 82 in Gorham. He volunteered with the local Cub Scout troop and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include a son, Gene Serafin of Pembroke; three daughters, Rosemarie Mulligan of Sebastian, Fla., Virginia Mattson of Keene and Gail Rayno of Concord; a brother, Joseph Serafin of New Britain, Conn.; a sister, Frances Hebron of Manchester; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His wife, Virginia Serafin; a son, Francis Serafin; and a daughter, Beverly Serafin, died previously. There are no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Allenstown, with the Rev. Wilfred Deschamps officiating. Burial will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Giving Program, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Unit 8, Bedford 03110-5032. The Petit Funeral Home, Pembroke, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur F. Valley Jr., BRADFORD

BRADFORD - Arthur F. "Artie" Valley Jr., 60, died Wednesday at his home. He was born at the New London Hospital, the son of Arthur and Marjorie (Simpson) Valley. He lived most of his life in Bradford. He was the owner and operator of Valley Plumbing and Heating for about 25 years. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Brennan of Portsmouth; two sons, Ted Valley of Bradford and Brian Valley of Newport; a sister, Beverly Chandler of Warner; grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Monday from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 174 Main St., New London. Services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunny Plain Cemetery in Bradford.
