NEW LONDON - Pauline Farrand, 93, of Main Street, died Thursday at Woodcrest Village. She was born in Boston, the daughter of Leon and Mabel (Spear) Merchant. She was raised in East Weymouth, Mass., and lived in Upper Montclair, N.J., and Mantoloking, N.J. She moved to Woodcrest Village in August. She earned a degree in education from Salem Teacher's College. She taught at Hanover High School for five years. She was a member of Watchung Congregational Church in Upper Montclair and Union Congregational Church. She was a life member of the Woman's Club of Upper Montclair and Mountainside Hospital Auxiliary; former president of the Teachers Club of Montclair; and a member of the Viking Club, and the Passaic Children's Day Nursery. Survivors include two sons, George Farrand of Vernon, N.J., and Richard Farrand of Winter Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Carolyn Hager of New London; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. Her husband, George Farrand, died in 1974. Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Ave., Upper Montclair, N.J. The Rev. Shephanie Weiner, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hebron Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Ave., Upper Montclair, N.J. 07039; or Woman's Club of Upper Montclair, 200 Cooper Ave, Upper Montclair, N.J. 07039. Chadwick Funeral Services, New London, is in charge of the arrangements.

Gerald Richard "Papa" "Smitty" Smith of Concord died yesterday. He was born in Monmouth, Maine, the son of Maynard and Bernice (Burgess) Smith. He was the owner of Tom Collins General Store from 1962 to 1984. He was a member of the Immanuel Community Church. He served in the New Hampshire Legislature for eight consecutive terms (16 years) and served a term on the Concord City Council. He was a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge No. 70 F & AM, the Bektash Shrine and the Concord Elks; and a charter member of the Heights Business and Professional Alliance. He was an avid mall walker and fisherman. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Christina (Jones) Smith; three sons, David Smith of Concord, Richard Smith of Canterbury, and Merritt Smith of Linthicum, Md.; two brothers, Laurence Smith of Pownal, Maine, and Leo Smith of Lahabra, Calif.; and four grandchildren. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. in Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Immanuel Community Church. The Rev. Norman Christopherson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Immanuel Community Church, 7 Grover St., Concord 03301.

Bernard F. Mahon

Bernard F. Mahon, 66, of Putney Avenue in Concord, died Thursday at Concord Hospital. He was born in Concord, the son of Patrick and Catherine (Lyon) Mahon. He graduated from St. John's High School and attended Boston University and Penn State. He worked for the State of New Hampshire for 41 years, retiring in 2000. He worked as an abstractor in the Right of Way Division. He was a member of the Concord Country Club and coached the Concord High School golf team. He was an avid golfer. Survivors include a brother, Edward Mahon of Concord; a sister, Mary LaPointe of Claremont; and many nieces and nephews. Three brothers, John Mahon, Richard Mahon and William Mahon, died previously. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. in Waters Funeral Home, 50 S. Main St., Concord. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 180 Loudon Road, Concord. The Rev. Paul Gousse, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Benjamin N. Daggett, BOW

BOW - Benjamin Neal Daggett, 18, of Knox Road, died Saturday at Concord Hospital. He was born in Manchester, the son of Dennis and Kathleen (Sargent) Daggett. He was a lifelong resident of Bow. He attended Bow High School, where he was a senior. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Concord. He was an ambassador to the Make a Wish Foundation of New Hampshire and to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Bedford; member of the Challenger Baseball team; and involved with Bow High School's Falcon football team. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed movies. Survivors include his parents of Bow; a sister, Melissa Daggett of Bow; a grandmother, Muriel Sargent of Concord; and an aunt and uncle. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Cain & Janosz Funeral Home, 74 Brook St., Manchester. Funeral services will be held during calling hours at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Charles Phelps of the Trinity Baptist Church of Concord will officiate. Ethel Gray, NORTHWOOD

NORTHWOOD - Ethel Gray, 70, of Rochester Road died Tuesday at Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center after a long illness. She was born in Wells, Maine, the daughter of Oscar and Grace (Finson) Gray. She was formerly of Nottingham and moved to Northwood in 1987. She worked with the Alrose Shoe Company of Exeter for more than 37 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and canning. Survivors include a daughter, Diane Gervais of Northwood; a brother, Russell Gray of Sanford, Maine; a sister, Marion Paquin of Springvale, Maine; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Purdy Memorial Chapel, Route 4 and Route 2, Concord Road, Lee. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the funeral chapel. The Rev. John Newman will officiate. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Northwood. BELMONT - Ronald P. Wentworth, 41, of Courtesy Avenue died Monday at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth after a sudden illness. He was born in Oxford, Mass., the son of Erving and Nellie (Gleason) Wentworth Sr. He was raised in Oxford, Mass., and New Hampshire and lived in Dudley, Mass., before moving to New Hampshire nine years ago. He attended Union Sanborn School in New Hampshire. He worked at We Go Transmissions in Dudley, Mass., for many years and at Globe Transmissions in Gilford for seven years. He was an active member of the Calvery Independent Baptist Church in Tilton since 1996. He was an avid snowmobiler. Survivors include his wife, Deborah (Dronzek) Wentworth of Belmont; two brothers, William Wentworth of Dudley, Mass., and Erving Wentworth Jr. of Sanford, Fla.; two sisters, Gail Wells of Deltona, Fla., and Tally Wentworth of Franklin; stepparents Hiawatha and Yvette Dunphe of Franklin; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. in the H.L. Young & Company Memorial Home, 175 S. Main St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the Calvery Independent Baptist Church, School Street, Tilton. The Rev. Richard Anderson, pastor, will officiate. HOPKINTON - Joan Mary Gourley, 70, of Hopkinton Road, died Thursday at Concord Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Hamilton, Ontario, the daughter of Robert and Doris (Robinson) Prowse. She was raised in Concord. She graduated from Concord High School in 1949. She worked for McLeod Florist, Personal Finance Company, the State of New Hampshire, Ken Ross Oil Company and as secretary at the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton for 12 years. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton for 40 years; a church school teacher; superintendent of the church school; and was active in the Ladies' Aid of the Church. She was active in Girl Scouts and Dial-a-Ride. She enjoyed gardening, water skiing, sewing, needlework, crafts and baking. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Richard Gourley of Hopkinton; three sons, Douglas Gourley of Hopkinton, Scott Gourley of Washington, D.C., and David Gourley of Orinda, Calif.; a daughter, Susan Callahan of Enfield, Conn.; a brother, John Prowse of Concord; a sister, Kathryn Willoughby of Montgomery, Ala.; a granddaughter; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Catherine McCaffrey, 87, of Concord, died Saturday at Havenwood Nursing Home. She was born in Boston, the daughter of William and Janet (Day) McCaffrey. She graduated from Braintree (Mass.) High School and attended Boston University. She was a phlebotomist at the Lahey Clinic in Boston for more than 25 years. Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Norcross of Concord; two nieces; and two nephews. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree, Mass. Bennett Funeral Home, Concord, is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie Barker, WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON - Marjorie Barker, 86, of Old Marlow Road, died Sunday at her home. She was born in Northfield, the daughter of Arthur and Minnie (French) Provencher. She was formerly of Oregon and Arizona, moving to Washington many years ago. She was a homemaker and owned and operated the Washington general store with her husband for 20 years. She also worked as a clerk for Washington Elementary School and Washington Congregational Church. She loved to travel and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Abner Barker of Washington; three sons, Raymond Barker of Hillsboro, Carl Barker of Pembroke and Philip Barker of Washington; four daughters, Roberta Hair of Florida, Gwendolyn Gaskell and Vivian Clark, both of Washington, and Beverly Bender of Arizona and Nevada; a sister, Eleanor Provencher of Concord; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Calling hours will not be held. Memorial services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. NEWBURY - Susan Young, 54, of Winding Brook Road died Tuesday at New London Hospital. She was born in Cleveland. She was formerly of Concord and Weare and lived in Bradford for 14 years. She moved to Newbury 10 years ago. She graduated from Ohio State University. She worked as a social worker with Southern New Hampshire Services and later at the Bradford Post Office. She also worked for the town of Newbury and at Kearsarge Regional School District for the past 10 years, recently as secretary in Bradford. She was a member of the PTO in Bradford and the New Hampshire Weavers Guild. She was an avid weaver and sold items at the Sunapee Craft Fairs. Survivors include her parents, John and Susan (Granstra) Adornetto of Dade City, Fla.; her husband of 28 years, Kenneth Young of South Newbury; a daughter, Martha Young of South Newbury; a son, Will Young of South Newbury; two brothers, Robert Adornetto of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, and Jack Adornetto of Westfield, Ohio; a niece; a nephew; and cousins. Calling hours will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Chadwick Funeral Services, 174 Main St., New London. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Bradford. Arthur C. Philbrook, HENNIKER

HENNIKER - Arthur C. Philbrook, 78, of Bear Hill Road, died Saturday after a long illness. He was born in Lynn, Mass., the son of Charles and Fanni (Jordan) Philbrook. He was educated in Milford and had lived in Nashua. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a rifleman with the 78th Amphibian Tank Co. from 1943 to 1946 and received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Purple Heart. He worked as store manager for IGA Stores in Nashua, Hudson and Merrimack for 37 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 0059 of Hillsboro. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Joyce (Manzo) Philbrook of Henniker; five sons, Christopher Philbrook of Henniker, David Philbrook of Windham, Donald Philbrook and Ronald Philbrook of Nashua, and Danny Philbrook of Walnut, Calif.; six daughters, Susan Rollins, Deborah Philbrook, Shirley Philbrook, Candice Chase and Cynthia Duhamel, all of Nashua, and Sharon Sanders of Milford; a brother, Richard Philbrook of Plainville, Mass.; a sister, Georgianna Luba of Nashua; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His first wife, Nellie (Lefebrve) Philbrook, died in 1975. Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock St., Nashua. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Edward Koonz will officiate. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery in Nashua.
