Preston T. Stewart, FRANKLIN

FRANKLIN - Preston "Pret" Thomas Stewart, 77, of View Street died yesterday at Franklin Regional Hospital after a period of failing health. He was born in West Rumney, the son of Preston and Mary (Gordon) Stewart. He lived in Laconia for many years, was formerly of Milford and had lived in Franklin since 1954. He graduated from Laconia High School in 1943 and from the New England Technical Institute in Providence, R.I., where he was certified an oil burner technician for service and installation. Stewart served with the Marine Corps during World War II and received a Purple Heart. He worked as a cable-splicer for New England Telephone Company for many years; as a plumbing and heating technician for more than 35 years; and, with his wife, owned and operated Pret Stewart's Plumbing and Heating Service in Franklin before retiring. He was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Franklin. He served as a Franklin city councilor; was a member of the planning board; was a district deputy grand knight of the Knights of Columbus VFW Post No. 1698; was a member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks, BPOE 1280; and was an incorporator of Franklin Savings Bank. He was an avid golfer who played at many local and state country clubs. He was a member of the Mojalaki Country Club and the Den Brae Golf Course in Sanbornton for many years. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, M. Florence (St. Louis) Stewart of Franklin; a son, Alan Stewart of Franklin; a daughter, Nancy Beaty of Chesapeake, Va.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A sister, Mary Field, died previously. Calling hours will not be held. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road, Tilton. Burial will be held with military honors Thursday at 2 p.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Everett H. Slocum, FRANKLIN

FRANKLIN - Everett Henry Slocum, 77, of Plains Court, died Sept. 17 at Franklin Regional Hospital in Franklin. He was born in Brattleboro, Vt., the son of Sherman and Lydia (Grant) Slocum Sr. He was raised in Brattleboro, Vt., and lived there most of his life. He was formerly of Claremont and Laconia, moving to Franklin in 1996. He served in the Army. Slocum worked for Ryder Rubbish Removal Company in Brattleboro, Vt., and American Van Lines as a truck driver, and was also employed by many building contractors in Vermont and New Hampshire before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion in Brattleboro, Vt., and Tilton. He was an avid card player and bingo fan. He enjoyed fishing. Survivors include a son, James Merithew of Brattleboro, Vt.; three daughters, Rose-Marie Poitras of Franklin, Alberta Chagnon of Boscawen and Marjorie Slocum of Lebanon; two brothers, George Slocum of Colchester, Vt., and Edward Slocum of Winooski, Vt.; four sisters, Anna Winter of Putney, Vt., Harriett Guerin of West Springfield, Mass., Mary Conklin of Milford, Conn., and Rosa Rowell of Hunts, Va.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A brother, Sherman Slocum Jr., died previously. Calling hours will not be held. Graveside services will be held with military honors Friday at 1 p.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. H.L. Young & Company Memorial Home in Franklin is in charge of the arrangements.

Ferol J. Montgomery, WARNER

WARNER - Ferol J. Montgomery, 75, died Friday at the Hospice House in Concord. She was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., the daughter of William and Eva (Borella) Montgomery. She lived in Concord from 1985 until moving to Pine Rock Manor in 2001. Montgomery worked for the Army Special Services in Germany; wrote articles in trade publications for Melamine Council in New York City; and taught kindergarten in Manhattan before retiring in 1985. She later worked for three years as an art teacher. She was a member of the United Federation of Teachers. She enjoyed water color painting and put on an art show at the library in Concord, Vt. Survivors include two sisters, Maria Hewitt of Prairie Village, Kan., and Terry Eaton of Concord, Vt.; three nieces and two nephews. Calling hours will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Cemetery, Holderness. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice Program, P.O. Box 1797, Concord 03302-1797.

Georgina Hurd, MORRISVILLE, Vt.

MORRISVILLE, Vt. - Georgina Hurd, 82, died Sept. 4 at Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville, Vt. She was born in Morrisville, Vt., the daughter of Morris and Mattie Greene. She graduated from Peoples Academy and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 1942. She also earned a master's degree in nursing and clinical psychology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She moved to Morrisville, Vt., in 1985. She worked as a registered nurse at Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston, Maine; served on the faculty of Concord Hospital Nurses Training School; and practiced as a licensed clinical psychologist in Ohio. She was a member of the Unitarian Church. Survivors include her husband, John Hurd; a sister, Mary Lighthall of Charlotte, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews. A son, Dennis Hurd, and a brother, Frederic Greene, died previously. Memorial services were held Sept. 7 at Puffer Methodist Church in Morrisville, Vt. Doris D. Palmer

Doris D. Palmer, 93, died Saturday at Presidential Oaks. She was born in Derby, Vt., the daughter of George and Edith (Bailey) Dean. She graduated from Plymouth State College. She worked as a teacher for 38 years in Stark, Hanover, Hooksett, Lincoln and Concord, retiring in 1974. Palmer was a lifetime member of the New Hampshire Teachers Association and was affiliated with the United Baptist Church in Concord. Survivors include two nephews, Robert Dean of Bath and George Dean of Littleton; and a niece, Dawn Dean of Bath. Her husband, Philip Palmer, died in 1984. Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Burial will follow at Blossom Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Plymouth State College, 14 Summer St., Plymouth 03264.

William P. Stuart, LOUDON

LOUDON - William Paulding Stuart, 75, died yesterday at Concord Hospital. He was born in Plymouth, Mass., the son of Frank and Grace (Cobbett) Stuart. He served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Tarawa and the U.S.S. Purdy. He worked as a compositor for Rumford Press for 27 years and for The Union Leader in Manchester. He worked at Banks Chevrolet after retiring. Stuart was a member of the U.S.S. Tarawa Veterans Association and the U.S.S. Purdy Veterans Association and a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 88 in Loudon. Survivors include his companion, Marion Stuart of Loudon; a nephew, Bradley Stuart of Loudon; and a niece, Susan Cataudella of Dracut, Mass. A brother, Donald Stuart, died previously. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Moore Cemetery, Loudon.

Donald F. Monell, GLOUCESTER, Mass.

GLOUCESTER, Mass. - Donald Francis Monell, 85, of Fort Hill Avenue died Thursday at Greycliff Nursing Home in Gloucester, Mass., after a long illness. He was born in Concord, the son of George and Ruby (Christie) Monell. He attended Concord High School and earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Bowdoin College in 1937. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a degree in engineering and construction in 1940, a degree in city planning in 1941, and a bachelor's degree and later a master's degree in architecture. He served as a lieutenant with the 333rd Special Service Regiment with the U.S. Army Engineers. The regiment later landed on Utah Beach in the Normandy invasion of 1944, assigned to prepare the bombed port of Cherbourg for allied shipping. His specialty was underwater demolition and reconstruction. He was later discharged with the rank of captain. Monell worked as city planner for the Tennessee Valley Authority, with his wife at Swift and Monell, and later opened his own office in Gloucester, Mass., in 1952. He served as vice president and architectural consultant to the Cape Ann Historical Association for 25 years; director of the Cape Ann Symphony, where he played violin for a short time; secretary of the Eastern Point Yacht Club for 16 years; was active with the Association of Eastern Point Residents; member of the American Institute and Massachusetts and Boston Societies of Architects; and was a founding member of the International Solar Energy Society. He enjoyed gardening, playing tennis and golf, and restoring old jeeps. Survivors include his wife, Lila (Swift) Monell of Gloucester, Mass.; three sons, Alexander Monell, Stephen Monell and Marcus Monell, all of Gloucester, Mass.; a daughter, Francena Simard of Maine; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be held today at 5:30 p.m. in the Cape Ann Historical Association, 27 Pleasant St., Gloucester, Mass. Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester, Mass., is in charge of the arrangements.

Paul W. Cooper, BRIDGEWATER, Mass.

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Paul W. Cooper, 65, died Wednesday at the Sachem Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Bridgewater, Mass., after a long illness. He was born in Middleborough, Mass., the son of Joseph and Roberta (Kidd) Cooper. He built custom cars and created the first mini-van in New England under the name Yankee Coach in 1979. He sold Suburus, International Jeeps and operated his custom body shop. Survivors include his mother of Hillsboro; four daughters; a sister, June Cooper of Hillsboro; five grandchildren; and a niece and nephew. Burial will be held privately at the Cooledge Farm Cemetery in Hillsboro. Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Hillsboro is in charge of the arrangements.

Elva M. Jordan, LACONIA

LACONIA - Elva M. Jordan, 83, died yesterday at the Pheasant Wood Nursing Home in Peterborough. She was born in Tulare, Calif., the daughter of Jess and Rosetta (Sawyer) Corder. She served in the Army Nursing Corps during World War II. She lived in Portland, Ore., and moved to Laconia more than 40 years ago. Jordan was a registered nurse for more than 45 years, working at Lakes Region General Hospital before retiring in 1998. She later worked at McKerley Nursing Home. Survivors include a son, James Jordan of Carlisle, Pa.; a daughter, Janice Hill of New Boston; a brother, Glen Corder of Bullshead City, Ariz.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a nephew and many cousins. Her husband, Royal Jordan Jr., died in 1974. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. Funeral services will not be held. Burial will be held at the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Laconia Area Community Land Trust, P.O. Evelyn L. Nakashian, HOOKSETT

HOOKSETT - Evelyn L. Nakashian, 83, died Friday at home. She was born in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of William and Florence (Pike) Keith. She lived in the Manchester and Hooksett area for more than 50 years. She worked with her husband in their business, Electronic Engineering Services Inc. For more than 50 years, she was a member of the Ruth Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star. Nakashian was an active supporter of Bektash Temple, AAONMS, and the Shrine charities. She enjoyed swimming at the Manchester YMCA. Survivors include a niece, Charlotte Janigian of Sudbury, Mass.; a nephew, David Kerrigan of Salisbury, Md.; and two grandnephews. Her husband, John Nakashian, died in 1990. Graveside services will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester. The Rev. Christopher Emerson, senior minister of the First Congregational Church, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shrine Hospital, c/o The Recorder, Bektash Temple AAONMS, P.O. Box 7252, Concord 03110. Goodwin Funeral Home in Manchester is in charge of the arrangements.

Frank Kerbrat, 75, of Fisherville Road died Sunday at Concord Hospital. He was born in Lexington, Mo., the son of Francoise and Mary (McIntyre) Kerbrat. He was formerly of Henniker. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Richardson) Kerbrat of Concord; a son, Joel Kerbrat of Concord; a daughter, Judith Vallari of Webster; a brother, Paul Kerbrat of California; and three grandchildren. Trent Riley, 26, of Concord, died Sunday of heart failure at his home. He was born in Concord, the son of David and Carole (Heath) Riley. He graduated from Concord High School in 1994 and attended the University of Montana for two years. He worked as a CAD designer at Graphic Packaging in Concord. Riley had a passion for film and writing, took pride in his screenplays and was the undefeated Kevin Bacon game champion. He enjoyed time with his dog, Ayla "Lulu." Survivors include his parents of Concord; a brother, Tayte Riley of Westport, Maine; a sister, Erin Riley of Concord; grandparents, Lillian Heath of Concord, and Donald and Arlene Riley of Concord; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial calling hours will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Church Street Chapel at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Memorial services will follow at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
