BELMONT - Kathleen Riel, 61, of Perkins Road died at her home Friday. She was born in Manchester, the daughter of E. Harold and Lucille (Collins) Young. She worked for many years as the vendor accounts manager at Concord Hospital. She was very athletic, playing semi-pro softball in her youth. She was also an avid sports fan. She is survived by two sons, Scott Moore of Concord and Tory Riel of Epsom; one sister, Patricia Godfrey of Seattle; one aunt; one great-aunt; one grandchild; and two cousins. Visiting hours will be held tomorrow at the Perkins Funeral Home, 60 Main St., Pittsfield, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Mount Calvary Cemetery on Norris Road in Pittsfield. The Perkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Grund, 72, of Concord died Saturday at the Harris Hill Nursing Home. She was born in Concord, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Easter) Lamarre. She worked as an assembler for Sprague Electric for 28 years. She was a member of the United Church of Penacook, RSVP of Concord and the Breast Cancer Survivors Group of Concord. Her husband, Earle Grund, died in 1998. She is survived by two sons, David Grund of Concord and Gary Grund of Boscawen; two daughters, Lori Darling of Northfield and Joyce Bickford of Allenstown; one brother, David Lamarre of Concord; three sisters, Catherine Koelher of California, Betty Craigue of Concord and Flora Belle Gensel of Cleveland; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Cemetery in Penacook, with the Rev. Peter Lovejoy officiating. Merrimack - Beth G. Houle, 70, of Grantham died Saturday at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born in Manchester, the daughter of Harold and Julie (Martin) Goldsmith. A resident of Grantham for the past year and a half, she previously lived in Nashua. She graduated from Concord High School and N.E. Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Boston. She worked as a registered nurse at hospitals in New London, Concord and Nashua. She also worked as a manager at Queensway to Fashion, before retiring in 1989. She enjoyed gardening, painting and quilting. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Morton Houle; two sons, Scott Houle of Litchfield and Douglas Houle of Nashua; a sister, Sally Walker of China, Calif.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Nashua. Internment prayers and burial will be private. DUNBARTON - Wendy E. Smith, 45, died suddenly Friday in Mesa, Ariz. She was born in Concord, the daughter of Donald Neal and Nancy (Willoughby) Smith of Dunbarton. She lived in New Hampshire most of her life, moving to Arizona in April 2001. Smith was a graduate of Goffstown High School and Champlain College in Vermont, where she graduated summa cum laude. She was an early childhood development teacher in several local communities, including at the Canterbury Children's Center. She was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Dunbarton. Survivors include her parents; three brothers, Wesley Smith and Roger Smith of Goffstown and Russell Smith of Laconia; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at French and Rising Funeral Home, 17 S. Mast St., Goffstown. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Dunbarton. Spring burial will be at Paiges Corner Cemetery. Lt. Col. Paul M. Crandall, USAF (retired), 74, died Sunday at Havenwood Nursing Home of cancer. He was born in Adams, Mass., the son of Harley and Hilda (Beebe) Crandall. He attended schools in Dover and graduated in 1952 from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in business administration. He was a career military officer, starting out as a seaman in the U.S. Navy in 1946. He also held the positions of squadron adjutant at Bucks Harbor AFB, Maine, and assistant chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff National Military Command Center Message Center. His favorite assignment was that of Air Force commander in charge of the radiological cleanup of Enewetak Atoll, where he helped Enewetak people return to their homeland. Crandall received the Humanitarian Service Medal for his work in Enewetak Atoll. His decorations included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, Department of Defense Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He was also awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Small Arms Marksmanship Ribbon and the Air Force Longevity Service Award. He was authorized to wear the Joint Chiefs of Staff identification badge. He is survived by his second wife, Dorothy (Hargis) Crandall of Concord; a daughter, Linda Dutton of Biloxi, Miss.; a brother, Donald Crandall of Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Ruth Gallagher of Glenmont, N.Y.; one grandson; nieces, nephews and friends. His first wife, Doris (Hooper) Crandall, died in 1990. A brother, Allen Crandall, also died previously. Memorial services will be held Aug. 10 at 3 p.m. in the Havenwood auditorium, 33 Christian Ave., Concord. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass. FRANKLIN - Sherwin A. Hatch, 86, of Franklin, died early Sunday morning at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia. He was the son of Roy and Nina Hatch. He grew up in East Wallingford, Vt., and graduated from Wallingford (Vt.) High School. He was a resident of Peabody Home in Franklin and prior to that lived in Bristol with his wife. He was a skilled machinist and worked in Springfield, Vt., for many years prior to his retirement. Hatch was a member of the American Legion Post No. 31 and the VFW Post No. 648, both of Rutland. Survivors include a brother, Stearns Hatch of Lebanon; a sister, Jean Bottaro of Long Beach, Calif.; and eight nieces and nephews. His wife, Gertrude Hatch, and two sisters, Bernice Newton and Barbara Ferguson, died previously. A graveside service will be held Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. The Rev. Bernice "Bea" B. Brown, 95, of Christian Avenue, died July 19 at Havenwood Healthcare in Concord after a short illness. She was born in Gilsum, the daughter of Bernis and Josephine (Warner) Ballou. She was a 1926 graduate of Kimball Union Academy. Before living at Havenwood, she lived in Grafton, Wilmot and New London. Brown was active with town affairs and was a longtime member of ladies' auxiliaries. Survivors include a son, Phillip Brown of Oakville, Ontario, Canada; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a nephew. Her husband of 66 years, Phillip Brown, died previously. Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. LACONIA - Elaine L. Brusina, 63, of O'Shea Lane, died Friday at home. She was born in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Emile and Josephine (Balagach) Majcher. She had lived in Laconia since 1969, coming from Pennsylvania. Brusina worked for Allen Rogers for many years. She had formerly worked as a nurse's assistant. Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Bayne of Cabot, Penn.; a brother, Wayne Majcher of Library, Penn.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Laconia. HILLSBORO - Harvey S. St. Lawrence, 87, died Monday at the Hillsborough House after a period of illness. He was born in Hillsboro, the son of Amie and Nellie (Dumais) St. Lawrence. During the 1940s, he lived in Auburn and Boscawen. In 1952 he moved to the Groton, Danbury and Bristol area, where he lived until his recent move back to Hillsboro. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps building roads in Portland, Maine, and Warren. St. Lawrence worked on the production line at International Packings Corp. in Bristol prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Timothy Church in Bristol, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Young-Richardson American Legion Post No. 59 of Hillsboro. Survivors include three daughters, Connie Thompson of Hillsboro, Betty Morrison of Bristol and Sandra Newhall of Laconia; two brothers, Raymond St. Lawrence of Bennington and Robert St. Lawrence of Hillsboro; two sisters, Jennette Gilwreath of Ohio and Irene Spain of Hillsboro; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His wife, Phyllis (Jenkerson) St. Lawrence, died in 2001. There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Harvey Memorial Cemetery, Shedd Road, Hillsboro. J. Kenneth Casey, 74, of Concord, died yesterday at Sunbridge Nursing Home in Portsmouth. He was born in Concord, the son of Mark and Mildred (Kelly) Casey. He was a 1947 graduate of St. John High School. He was a lifelong resident of Concord. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Casey worked at the state highway garage for several years. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 21 in Concord. Survivors include a sister, Mary Anna Commerford of Concord; one niece; three nephews; and many friends. His sister, Jane Casey, died previously. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church.
