LACONIA - Marjorie Theresa McAvenia, 90, of Gilford Avenue died on Friday at the Lakes Region General Hospital. She was born in Franklin, the daughter of James and Anna (MacKenzie) Maloney. She moved from Franklin to Laconia over 50 years ago. She graduated from St. Mary's Grammar School and, in 1930, from Franklin High School. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. She worked at Sulloway Hosiery as a receptionist and secretary for many years and also modeled dressed for the ladies clothing department of Holmes & Nelson. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Arlene Blackey of Gilford; six grandchildren, Chrissy McAvenia Jones of Center Harbor, Charles McAvenia Jr. of Laconia, Dean Chapman of Goffstown, Brian Chapman of Tilton, Dicksie Guillemette of Goffstown and Richard McAvenia Jr. of Burlington, Vt.; nine great-grandchildren; a niece, Anna York, of Nottingham; and many cousins. Her husband, Charles McAvenia, died in 1976; her son, Richard McAvenia, died in 1994; and five brothers and three sisters also died previously. Calling hours will be held tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Laconia. The Rev. Gary Kosmowski, pastor of the church, will officiate. LACONIA - Dorothy C. Hamel, 76, of Holman Street died on Saturday at the Lakes Region General Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Laconia, the daughter of Earl and Annette (LaPointe) Knowlton. She was raised in Texas and was well-traveled, spending time on various military bases throughout the country and in Guam. She had lived in Laconia for 25 years. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. She was a dedicated grandmother. She enjoyed her pets and loved music. Survivors include a daughter, Julie Irwin of Laconia; two grandchildren, Faolan Connelly and Teagan Connelly, both of Laconia; and several close cousins. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia. Dr. Wesley J. Schurman Sr., 90, of Concord and Shell Point Village, Fort Myers, Fla., died Feb. 2 in Fort Myers after several years of failing health. He was born in Longmeadow, Mass. He attended the New England School of Theology and Gordon College in Boston. He was granted an honorary doctorate of humanities from Trinity College in Clearwater, Fla. Schurman served as a pastor for 12 years and then affiliated with Christian Mutual Life Insurance Company for 45 years, 25 years as president. Upon retiring in 1981, he served as chairman of the board for 10 years. His hobbies included aviation, boating and raising Arabian horses; his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lucille; two sons, Wesley Schurman Jr. of Conway and David Schurman of Boulder, Colo.; a daughter Carlene Petell of Conway; four grandchildren, Pamela Luckern, Dale Petell, Jonathan Schurman and Michael Petell; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11: 30 a.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Internment will be in the spring at Riverside Cemetery in Newmarket. BOSCAWEN - M. Viola Peckham, 97, died Thursday at Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen. She was born in Bartlett, the daughter of Samuel and Cora (Hatch) Stillings. She graduated from Littleton High School and Concord Business School. She lived in Littleton and Melrose, Mass., for many years. Peckham worked as a secretary for Williams and Alley Insurance Agency in Melrose, Mass., from 1950 to 1981. She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Melrose, Mass. Survivors include a brother, Woodrow Stillings of Littleton; and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, John Peckham, and nine brothers and sisters died previously. Memorial services were held at the First Congregational Church in Concord. Graveside services will be held today at noon at Wyoming Cemetery, Sylvan Street, Melrose, Mass. WEST LEBANON - Jonathan Ingersoll Jr., 76, died Saturday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon after a short illness. He was born in Concord, the son of Jonathan and Marion (Roby) Ingersoll. He graduated from Concord High School in 1944. He moved to West Lebanon in 1967. Ingersoll worked for the Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory until retiring. Survivors include his wife, Peggy, of West Lebanon; a son, Jonathan of Bel Air, Md.; a daughter, Barbara of Kittery Point, Maine; a sister, Mary McMahon of Concord; and three grandchildren. BOSCAWEN - Elaine A. "Dolly" Hardy, 50, of Bailey Drive died yesterday at home. She was born in New Bedford, Mass., the daughter of Louis and Elaine (Medeiros) Desouza. She lived in Bethlehem for 27 years before moving to Boscawen eight years ago. She worked as a phlebotomist for Franklin Hospital. Hardy was a past member of the St. Rose of Lima Church in Bethlehem. She enjoyed camping. Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Paul Hardy of Boscawen; a son, Paul Hardy Jr. of Reading, Pa.; a daughter, Lisa Beard of Bethlehem; three brothers, Manuel Desouza of Boscawen, Louis Desouza Jr. of New Bedford, Mass., and Michael Desouza of Bethlehem; a sister, Gayle Guyer of Bethlehem; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. NEW LONDON - George A. Sanborn, 88, died Wednesday at Woodcrest in New London. He was born in Lost Angeles, the son of Hugh Montgomery and Bessie (Andrews) Sanborn. He attended schools in Southern California, including UCLA and the University of Southern California. He served in the Army during World War II for five years, serving as an enlisted man and later as an officer. He served in the Luzon campaign. He later served in the Army Reserves for 28 years before retiring as major. He moved to Henniker after the war and lived there until 1988. Sanborn worked as an engineer for the State of New Hampshire before retiring in 1987. While living in Henniker, he served on the town budget committee for 38 years, the school board for seven years and various commissions and committees of the town government. He also served as a lecturer at New England College. He was a competitive pistol shooter and competed at Camp Perry. He was a member of the President's One Hundred and the New Hampshire Society of Engineers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Survivors include two sons, Hugh Sanborn of Pittsfield and Louis Sanborn of Grantham; two daughters, Anne Rowe of Wilmot and Marilyn Bowie of Abbeville, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. His wife of 55 years, Duane Bradley, died in 1996, and a brother, Lewis, died previously. TURNERS FALLS, Mass. - Blanche C. Meyer, 90, of K Street died yesterday at Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass., after a period of failing health. She was born in Montague, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Tekla (Holewa) Kuklewicz. She attended schools in Montague, Mass. Meyer was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Turners Falls, Mass., where she was a member of the Women's Council. She was a member of the Montague Council on Aging and the Montague Senior Center. Survivors include two sons, Francis Meyer of Concord and John Meyer III of Chocowintity, N.C.; two grandsons; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. NEW LONDON - Floyd L. Avery, 93, of Pleasant Street, died Monday at the Woodcrest Village in New London. He was born in Woodstock, the son of Leigh and Mary (Smith) Avery. He attended schools in Woodstock and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Tufts University in 1931. He lived in Woodstock and later Concord for 41 years before to New London in 1977. Avery was a registered professional engineer and worked for the New Hampshire Department of Public Works and Highways Design Division from 1936 until working as the department's secondary roads engineer from 1953 until retiring in 1977. He represented the New England states on a secondary roads subcommittee of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. He was a member of the Concord Unitarian Universalist Church in Concord and the Kearsarge Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in New London. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the New Hampshire Society of Professional Engineers, the American Public Words Association, the New Hampshire Good Roads Association, where he served as secretary and treasurer from 1961 to 1969, the Country Squires of New London, the Tufts Club, Elkins Fish and Game Club, the Pleasant Lake Protective Association and the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society in Lincoln. He was a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge No. 70 F&AM in Concord for more than 70 years. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Alberta (Gilman) Avery of New London; a son, Bruce Avery of Potomac, Md.; two daughters, Carol Haber of New York and Barbara Avery of Woodstock; a sister, Shirley McKean of North Haverhill; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. BOW - Alma Holler, 83, of Rocky Point Drive, died yesterday at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Werner and Mathilda (Fischer) Holler. She graduated from Jamaica High School in Queens, N.Y. Holler worked for Blue Cross Bleu Shield for many years. Survivors include a brother, Werner Holler Jr. of Bow; a sister, Gertrude Holler of Bow; and two nieces and a nephew. Two brothers, Charles Holler and John Holler, died previously. NORTHFIELD - Rodney Wallace Tenney, 80, of Greenwood Drive died Tuesday at Mountain Ridge-Genesis Elder Care in Franklin after a period of failing health. He was born in New Ipswich, the son of Wallace and Ida (Hale) Tenney. He attended schools in New Ipswich and graduated from Penacook High School in 1941. He was formerly of New Ipswich and Boscawen, where he lived at Highland Farm. He lived in Boscawen for more than 32 years and in Franklin from 1954 until moving to Northfield in 1981. Tenney served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He served at Camp Shanks in New York City before leaving on the Queen Elizabeth for Glasgow, Scotland, in 1944. He later served in France and Belgium with the Indian Head 2nd Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in Germany by a sniper and received the Purple Heart. He was flown to Paris Hospital, to Halloran General Hospital at Staten Island, and later to Cushing General Hospital in Framingham, Mass., where he was visited by Helen Keller and Roy Rogers. He was discharged as Tech 5th Grade from Company G 38th Infantry Regiment. He received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with two Bronze Stars for battles of the Rhineland and the Ardennes, American Theatre Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He worked as a mechanic, owned and operated Tenney Garage and Mobile Gas Station in Boscawen for four years. He worked as a driver for the Rennie's Taxi Service in Franklin from 1954 to 1974 and later owned and operated Tenney's Gift Shop in Franklin with his wife. He volunteered as an engine driver for the Boscawen "Much I Do" Fire Company. He was a member for 46 years of the Franklin United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer and on the board of trustees. He was a former member of the American Legion Post No. 49 in Northfield and a life member of the Disables American Veterans. He loved animals and crossword puzzles. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Myrna (Brock) Tenney of Northfield; and two cousins. His father died in 1931; his mother died in 1989; a brother, Kenneth Tenney, also died previously. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road, Tilton. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church in Franklin. The Rev. Carol Cray, pastor, will officiate.
