Elaine S. Cheney, LACONIA

LACONIA - Elaine S. Cheney, 77, of Blueberry Lane, died Sunday at the Hospice House in Concord. She was born in Waltham, Mass., the daughter of Ernest and Mildred (Johnston) Sinclair. She lived in Laconia most of her life. She graduate from Laconia High School in 1943 and Plymouth Teachers College in 1947. Cheney taught English at Stevens High School in Claremont and eighth-grade English and history at Laconia Junior High School. She also worked as a social worker at the Belknap County Nursing Home for many years. She volunteered at the Lakes Region General Hospital for many years. She was a longtime member of the St. James Episcopal Church. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Cheney of Concord; a sister, Pauline Baker of Sturbridge, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Anne Peller and Thomas Peller, both of Mount Hermon, Mass. Her husband, Thomas Cheney, died in 1970; and a daughter, Mary Ellen Peller, died in 1997. Calling hours will not be held. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 876 N. Main St., Laconia. The Rev. Jonathan MacKenzie, rector of the church, will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring in the family lot at Union Cemetery in Laconia. Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home in Laconia is in charge of the arrangements.

William F. Van Vranken

William F. Van Vranken, 86, of Concord died yesterday at Havenwood Nursing Home in Concord. He was born in Elizabeth, N.J., the son of Frank and Grace (Painter) Van Vranken. He was raised in Schenedectady, N.Y., and lived in New Jersey for more than 40 years before moving to the Havenwood Community. He worked as manager for Blue Cross of New Jersey Van Vranken was a member and past master of the Continental Masonic Lodge in Millburn, N.J., and a member of the Holland Society of New York. He enjoyed traveling across the country and was a skilled amateur furniture maker. He volunteered and contributed to the Clifton Park (N.Y) Historical Society. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Van Vranken of Concord and Susan Phillips of Springfield, N.J.; and four grandchildren, David Rosen and Matthew Rosen, both of Concord, and Sharon Phillips and Christopher Phillips, both of Springfield, N.J. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Wyoming Cemetery in Wyoming, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to the Havenwood-Heritage Heights Endowment Fund, 33 Christian Ave., Concord 03301; or to the charity of one's choice.

Margaret A. Dobbie

Margaret A. "Peg" Dobbie, 59, died Monday at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack of metastasized breast cancer. Correction: Memorial services will be held May 3 at 11 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 274 Pleasant St., Concord. Yesterday's edition listed an incorrect address. Memorial donations may be made to the Peg Dobbie Grassroots Organizing Fund, payable to the NARAL-NH Foundation, 18 Low Ave., Concord 03301.

Marie Bisson

Marie "Doll" Bisson, 68, of Concord's south end, died Monday at the Hospice House in Concord. She was born in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Spezzana) Albanese. She attended schools in New Jersey and moved to Concord in 1972. She worked as a dietary aide for New Hampshire Hospital for eight years and as a childcare provider in her home for many years. She also taught ceramics with her daughter in Concord for 12 years. Bisson loved cats and gardening. Survivors include a daughter, Angelyn Borden of Loudon; four sons, Robert Bisson, Richard Bisson and Robert Bisson Jr., all of Concord, and Edwin Bisson of Henniker; a brother, Benedict Albanese of Saddlebrook, N.J.; and eight grandchildren. Her husband of 42 years, Robert Bisson Sr., died in 1995; and four brothers, Steven Albanese, Joseph Albanese, Anthony Albanese and Donald Albanese, also died previously. Calling hours will not be held. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Perkins Memorial Chapel at Blossom Hill Cemetery. Burial will follow in the family lot at Blossom Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice House, P.O. Doris P. Barker

Doris P. Barker, 99, of Concord died Monday at Havenwood Nursing Home in Concord. She was born in Springfield, Mass., the daughter of Eugene and Marion (Rogers) Perry. She was formerly of Springfield, Mass., Prescott, Ariz., North Pomfret, Vt., Lebanon and Keene. Barker supported many organizations and loved animals - especially bluebirds and cats - nature and Native American art. Her husband, Edwin Barker, died previously. Services will not be held Burial will be held at Springfield Cemetery in Springfield, Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Audubon Society, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord 03301. Bennett Funeral Home in Concord is in charge of the arrangements.

Mitchel N. Mallove, WARNER

WARNER - Mitchel Noah Mallove, 87, died Tuesday at Pine Rock Manor in Warner after a long illness. He was born in New York City, the son of Morris and Fanny (Gesick) Mallove. He learned Yiddish from his parents and helped them learn English. He graduated from Bulkeley High School in New London and Brooklyn Trade School. He was formerly of New London, Conn., and Norwick, Conn., before moving to New Hampshire in 1998. Mallove worked for his father and later for various plumbing and heating companies in Connecticut until retiring in the early 1980s. He served in the Army in the Pacific Theater, in Okinawa and the Southern Philippines and later as a infantryman and radio operator during World War II. He also served as Staff Sergeant with Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment. He was a member of the United Association of Steamfitters, Plumbers and Pipefitters, the Jewish War Veterans of the United States and Temple Beth Jacob in Concord. He was a former member of Beth Jacob Synagogue of Norwich, Conn., where he also sang in the choir and volunteered as Scoutmaster of Troop 3. He volunteered with the bloodmobile and with Jewish immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Survivors include his wife, Gladys (Alexander) Mallove of Pembroke; a son, Eugene Mallove of Pembroke; four sisters, Lillian Hollander of Merrimack, Toby Katz of Uncasville, Conn., Sylvia Schreiber of New York City and Ruth Mannis of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Temple Beth Jacob in Concord. Burial was held at the Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery in Norwich, Conn.

Peter H. Vander Zwart, ANDOVER

ANDOVER - Peter H. Vander Zwart, 59, of Shaw Hill Road died Saturday at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. He was born in New York City, the son of Richard and Diana (Rogovin) Vander Zwart. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1965 and New York University Law School in 1968. Vander Zwart was formerly of Vermont and New York City. He worked as assistant district attorney in New York City, as legal council for the Department of Social Services in New York City, as an independent lawyer and as a producer in the motion picture industry. He was also a small-business entrepreneur, owned the lamp store Shady Business in Greenwich Village in New York City and later was self-employed as a carpenter. He loved racing, repairing things and building bicycles. Calling hours will not be held. Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the animal shelter of one's choice. Affordable Funeral Cremation Services Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Jennings, CHICHESTER

CHICHESTER - Dorothy Jennings, 77, formerly of Kaime Road, died March 14 at Presidential Oaks in Concord. She was born in Salem, Mass., the daughter of Jean and Ledia (Lafrance) Labonte. She lived in the Chichester area for more than 50 years. Jennings worked as an assembler for Sprague Electric Company in Concord. Survivors include her husband, Earl Jennings of Chichester; a son, Robert Pickard of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Juliette Eaton of Bow; a stepdaughter, Ruthie White of Athol, Mass.; two sisters, Juliette Morse of Salem, Mass., and Jeannette Dunn of Danvers, Mass.; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 1 to 2 p.m. at Perkins Funeral Home, 60 Main St., Pittsfield. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Charles Paige-Morgan, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Pittsfield, will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Leavitt Cemetery in Chichester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society Memorial Giving Program, 360 Route 101, Unit 8, Bedford 03110-5032; or the National Children's Leukemia Foundation, 172 Madison Ave., Ste. 502, New York, N.Y. 10016. Katherine Harriman, former state legislator

ASHLAND - Katherine "Kaye" J. Harriman, 87, a former state legislator from Concord, died Friday at the Riverside Rest Home in Dover after a period of failing health.
She was born in Stratford, the daughter of Mae Agnes McFadden Jordan and Harry B. Jordan.
She was a communicant of St. Agnes Church and active in parish activities. She was also a member of the Ashland Historical Society and the Ashland Women's Club which, in 1996, named her its Volunteer of the Year.
Harriman was the first female Democrat elected to the House from Concord. She was also secretary of the New Hampshire Order of Women Legislators and was national secretary in 1976.
She is survived by three daughters, Shirley H. White of Center Harbor, Elaine H. Brunelle of Somersworth and Sally H. Everett of Hudson, Fla., and Pennsylvania; a son, Arthur J. Harriman of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Her husband of 63 years, James (Babe) L. Harriman, died in 1995. Two brothers, James and Clarence Jordan, died previously.
Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dupuis Funeral Home, Hill Street, Ashland.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Ashland.
Donations may be made in her memory to the organization or church of one's choice.
The Dupuis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Parkman Dexter Howe Jr., GILFORD

GILFORD - Parkman Dexter Howe, Jr., 88, died yesterday at home. Howe was born in Clinton, Mass., the son of Grace (Cummins) and Parkman D. Howe Sr. He grew up in Needham and attended Noble and Greenough School in Dedham. He graduated from Harvard University in 1937. "Parkie" married Helen McIntosh in 1941. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He served aboard the destroyer escort Francis M. Robinson, leading convoys across the North Atlantic. The ship was credited for sinking two submarines. Howe worked in manufacturing and farming in Laconia and Gilford. He attended the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va., and graduated in 1955. He was ordained into the Episcopal Ministry. He served at Christ Church in Exeter and was the rector at Grace Church in East Concord and St. Mary's in Penacook. In the early 1960s, Howe became involved in the civil rights movement. He worked with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in Alabama and Mississippi. His work in this area culminated in the from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965. Howe served as chaplain and assistant headmaster at the Darrow School, New Lebanon, N.Y., from 1965 to 1974. He retired to Gilford, where he served on the planning board for many years. In 1986, he and his wife were chosen grand marshals of Gilford Old Home Day. He was also active on the board of the Spaulding Youth Center, and he was a member of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. He was an avid sailor and member of the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club. He regularly won races and regattas on Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake, and he was elected a member of the Cruising Club of America. He was also a marksman and a hunter and active in the hunter safety program of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include three sons, Jonathan Howe of Pittsburg, Andrew Howe of Gilford and Parkman Howe III of Carlisle, Mass.; two daughters, Sara Howe-Cobb of Augusta, Mont., and Barbara Howe of Helena, Mont.; two sisters, Marietta Cutler of Needham, Mass. and Maud Rheault of Dover, Mass., and 11 grandchildren. His wife of 50 years died in 1991. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the Meredith Episcopal Church, 93 Route 25 in Meredith, on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Robin Thomas will officiate. Interment will be at a later date at the McCoy Cemetery in Gilford. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Howe's name to The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord 03301; or to Episcopal Relief and Development, P.O. Box 12043, Newark, N.J. 07101; or to Community Health and Hospice Inc., 780 North Main St., Laconia 03246.
