Leverett F. Andrews
Gardener, stamp collector and lay reader
Leverett Francis Andrews, 97, died on March 25, 2002, at Maplewood Manse Nursing Home in Peterborough. Mr. Andrews was born on Dec. 5, 1904, in Ashaway, R.I., the son of Evelyn (Lamb) and George W. Andrews. He moved to Peterborough in 1951 from Bradford, R.I., where he had worked at the Bradford Dyeing Association from 1937 until 1952. In this area, he worked at the Verney Mills in West Peterborough from 1952 to 1956, and for the U.S. Postal Service in Peterborough. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he was a lay reader, a member of the vestry, and a member of the choir. He was a past master of Franklin Lodge 20 in Westerly, R.I., and past master of the Quonochontaug Grange in Charleston, R.I.. He was an honorary member of the Altemont Lodge in Peterborough. He was an ardent gardener and had raised championship daffodils and dahlias in Rhode Island. He was a stamp collector, served coffee at area nursing homes, and was a member of the AARP Widowers and Widows Group. His wife Viola (Stillman) Andrews, died in 1989. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Mildred Perry, Elinor Edwards, and Marion Tedford, and two grandsons, Peter John Andrews and Michael Thorp. He is survived by two sons, William G. Andrews of Milford, and Leverett F. Andrews Jr., of Shelter Harbor, R.I.; two daughters, Constance Davis of Peterborough and Audrey Thorp of Westerly, R.I.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was held March 28 at All Saints Church in Peterborough, with the Rev. Bruce Jacobson officiating. Burial will be in River Bend Cemetery in Westerly, R.I., on April 5, at 1 p.m.. Nicholas Bornas
Accomplished bowler, Army veteran
Nicholas Bornas, 77, of Nashua, died March 26, 2002, at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a lengthy illness. Mr. Bornas was born in Woburn, Mass., son of the late Nick and Anastacia (Paras) Bornas. He had been residing in Nashua for the past eight years, coming from Woburn, Mass. He was the husband of Frances C. (Warren) Bornas. Mr. Bornas worked for General Tire in Reading, Mass., for 24 years. He was later employed with Raytheon until his retirement. He was an Army veteran, having served in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Bornas was an accomplished bowler, and an active member of area leagues for many years until his health no longer allowed him to play. He was also a member of the George A. Campbell American Legion Post in Woburn. He was predeceased by a sister, Pota Erwin. Besides his wife, survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, James E. and Sharon Bornas of Merrimack, and Douglas S. Bornas of Cloma, Mich.; a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Frank Saia of Merrimack; three brothers, George Bornas of Windsor Locks, Conn., John Bornas of Mashpee, Mass., and Harry Bornas of Homestead, Fla.; and three grandsons, Michael F. Saia, Daniel W. Saia and Nicholas A. Bornas, all of Merrimack. A funeral service was held March 29, at The Graham Funeral Home, Woburn, Mass. Peter R. Chandler
Resident of Brookline for many years
Peter R. Chandler, 42, of Philadelphia, died March 27, 2002, at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Mr. Chandler was born Oct. 2, 1959, in Boston, son of Phil and Marjorie (Evans) Chandler of Brookline. He moved to Philadelphia two years ago, after living in Brookline for many years. He was the husband of Patricia (Piljer) Chandler of Philadelphia. Mr. Chandler was a graduate of Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., and was a certified public accountant with Hass & Company in Media, Pa. Besides his parents and wife, survivors include two brothers, Stuart E. Chandler of Valencia, Pa., and Bennett R. Chandler of Brookline; three aunts, two nieces and one nephew. Funeral services were held April 2 in the Brookline Church of Christ. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Brookline. Peter E. Donegan
Lived in Bedford for 24 years
Peter E. Donegan, 72, of New Merrimack Road, Bedford, died at his winter residence in Delray Beach, Fla., on March 28, 2002. He was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on Sept. 2, 1929, son of Peter and Bridget (Feeney) Donegan. He had lived in Lenox, Mass., for 40 years, and had resided in Bedford for the past 24 years. For the past five years, he and his wife wintered in Delray Beach, Fla. He had worked for Energy North for 20 years until his retirement. Prior to that, he worked for Berkshire Gas for many years. He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton Church and enjoyed tennis. He was predeceased by a son, Peter Donegan, in 1962. Members of the family include his wife of 53 years, Marie (Norton) Donegan; two sons, Daniel Donegan of Ohio and William Donegan of Bedford; two daughters, Lynn Rizvi of Florida and Mary Beth Franco of Bedford; 12 grandchildren; and several cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 3 in Ste. Marie Church. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford. Andrew E. Duval, 50, of Nashua, died March 27, 2002, at his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1951, in Nashua, son of the late Euclide and Gertrude (Duval) Duval. He was a lifelong resident of Nashua and attended local schools. Mr. Duval was employed by Cabtek for many years. Survivors include three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Rene and Karen Duval, Donald and Kathy Duval, and Richard Duval, all of Nashua; one sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Bruce Silva of Amherst; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Anne L. (Gravlin) Griffin, 76, of Londonderry, died March 29, 2002, at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Griffin was born April 13, 1925, in Detroit, daughter of Clarence A. and Kathryne Shea Gravlin. She lived in Londonderry since 1970, previously residing in Winchester, Mass. She was the widow of John T. Griffin, who died in 1993. Mrs. Griffin had owned the Plummer s Tavern, a Londonderry restaurant, for five years. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and cooking. Mrs. Griffin was a member of the Londonderry Newcomer s Club and volunteered at the Londonderry Leach Library, the Derry Library and the Soup Kitchen. She had been a private grade school tutor in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She was a parishioner of Saint Mark the Evangelist Church in Londonderry. Mrs. Griffin was a graduate of Saint Ambrose High School in Grosse Pointe, Mich., in 1943 and Marygrove College in Detroit in 1947. She majored in home economics, and later did post graduate studies at Salem State College in Salem, Mass. Survivors include two sons, John M. Griffin of Londonderry and Danny Griffin of Merrimack; two daughters, Maureen Heiser of Londonderry and Kate Griffin of New York City; four granddaughters and nieces and nephews. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mark the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 1 South Road and Mammoth Road, south Londonderry, Friday, on April 12, 2002, at 1 p.m. A reception will follow. Private burial will take place in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. Theresa Marie (Lemander) LaFlame, of Hillsborough, died March 22, 2002, at Hospice House in Concord. Mrs. LaFlame was born in Boston, daughter of the late George E. and Rhoda (Woods) Lemander. She was raised in Francestown and spent her life in New Hampshire. Mrs. LaFlame graduated from Milford High School and attended Nashua Business College, and served in World War II as a member of the Woman s Army Air Corps. She worked for the Hillsborough County Registry of Deeds in Nashua for a number of years and for the U.S. Postal Service. Mrs. LaFlame was predeceased by a brother, George Lemander; and a grandson, Steven D. LaFlame. Survivors include five sons, Steven R. LaFlame of Warner, Peter A. LaFlame of Salisbury, Vt., Thomas S. LaFlame of Hopkinton, John W. LaFlame of Wingate, N.C., and Chris W. LaFlame of Mooresville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kara, Jeffrey and Gregory LaFlame of North Carolina and Andrew S. LaFlame of Contoocook; a sister, Lorraine Ismay Woodman of Sanford, Maine; a niece, a nephew and several cousins. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Jean N. Leclerc
Practiced medicine in Manchester
Dr. Jean N. Leclerc, 91, of Manchester, died March 27, 2002, at Catholic Medical Center after a period of declining health. Born in Manchester on Oct. 31, 1910, he was the son of Ludger and Odile (Boucher) Leclerc. Dr. Leclerc graduated from Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., and earned his medical degree from Laval University Medical School. He later entered the military during World War II and served in the Army Medical Corps in Europe. He lived in Wheeling, W.Va., for a time, and returned to Manchester where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1977. He had been on staff at the former Notre Dame Hospital and later Catholic Medical Center for many years. He belonged to numerous societies and organizations, among them the N.H. Medical Association and the American Medical Association. In addition, he was a member of the Jolliet Club, and L Association Canado-Americaine. Dr. Leclerc was married to Yvette (Jutras) Leclerc, who died in 1965, and Florence (Hemond) Leclerc, who died in 2000. Family members include a daughter, Dr. Judith D. Leclerc of Merrimack, a son, Paul H. Leclerc of Sausalito, Calif.; nieces and nephews. The Liturgy of the Word was conducted March 30 in St. George Church in Manchester. Genevieve L. Jane (Dockham) Leonard, 76, of Windham, died March 29, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Leonard was born April 11, 1925, in Arlington, Mass., daughter of the late Percy Guy and Genevieve (Bierhardt) Dockham. She had also lived in Arlington and Billerica, Mass. She was the wife of John F. Jack Leonard, with whom she celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on June 12, 2001. Mrs. Leonard was a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Pelham and St. Marie s Church in Lowell. She attended Arlington schools and was a graduate of Arlington High School in 1943. Mrs. Leonard was predeceased by a son, John Scott Leonard; a brother, John Dockham; and a sister, Betty Parker. Besides her husband, survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda L. Leonard-Olson and Edwin Olsen of Lowell, Mass., Kathleen L. and Philip Leavitt of Windham, BettyJane and Edward Walsh of Amherst, Judith A. and Edward Casey of Lowell, Jacqueline T. and Edward Johansen of Bedford and Brenda L. and David Caron Brentwood; 15 grandchildren, SarahJane and Rebekah Olsen, Brandy, Caroline, Shane and Colleen Walsh, Johanna Hurley, John, Brendan, MaryElizabeth and Emma Casey, Chad and Cole Johansen and Olivia and Claudia Caron; a great-granddaughter, Sadie Rowley; a brother David Dockham of Hood River, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews. Maurice C. Marvell

Maurice C. Spike Marvell, 86, of S. Merrimack Road in Hollis, died March 28, 2002, at his home following a sudden illness. Mr. Marvell was born June 27, 1915, at the family home on Dow Road in Hollis, son of the late Frank E. and Jennie B. (Coburn) Marvell. He was a lifelong resident of Hollis. He was the widower of Lillian A. (Hanson) Marvell, who died Oct. 27, 1989. They were married Oct. 8, 1939 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary a few weeks before his wife s death. Mr. Marvell began his career with his father in the dairy business. He and his wife then owned and operated M.C. Marvell School Bus System in Hollis for a number of years. He was a member of the Congregational Church, U.C.C. of Hollis. Mr. Marvell was educated in Hollis schools. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Theodore Marvell, and a sister, Elvira J. Cudworth. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest C. and Diana Marvell of San Antonio, Texas, Donald M. and Jo Marvell of Dallas, and William R. and Lynne Marvell of Amherst; a daughter, Brenda J. Wilkins of Hollis; seven grandchildren, Carrie Richardson, Michael, Valerie, Donald, Alison and Melissa Marvell and Brian Wilkins Jr.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Howard Marvell of Townsend, Mass., and Kenneth and Dorothy Marvell of New Boston; two brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Robert and Marion Hanson, Marion Reed, and Shirley and Paul Groves; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Pauline L. Levesque
Enjoyed music and travel
Pauline L. (Lacroix) Levesque, 71, died March 27, 2002, at Elliot Hospital in Manchester after a long illness. Born in Manchester on May 11, 1930, she was the daughter of Ludger and Eva (Hebert) Lacroix. She lived in Goffstown many years before moving to Hooksett in 1989. She attended local schools and was an honor student. Mrs. Levesque worked at J. Treisman s in Manchester for eight years. She then worked at the operations center at Dartmouth Bank and its successors for seven years. She had wintered in Palmetto, Fla., for several years. She enjoyed music and had learned to play the piano and accordion. She also enjoyed traveling. She will be remembered as a quiet, friendly person and as a loving mother and grandmother. The family includes her husband of 52 years, Raymond P. Levesque of Hooksett; five daughters, Nanette Levesque and Frances Tripp, both of Manchester, Anita Blanchette of Bedford, Patricia Henderson of Wilton, and Celia Heavisides of Goffstown; three sons, Joseph Levesque of Londonderry, Roger Levesque of Hooksett, and Steven Levesque of Dunbarton; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Roger Lacroix of Manchester; and nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 2 at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine Church in Manchester. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Manchester.

Glenna E. Read

Glenna E. Read, 84, of Church St., Merrimack, died March 29, 2002, at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth after a brief illness. Mrs. Read was born June 13, 1917, in Plymouth, daughter of the late Pearley and Agnes (Howe) Watts. She was the widow of Fay W. Read, who died Oct. 29, 2001. Mrs. Read was employed at Lockheed Sanders, and had formerly been employed a Merrimack Leather. She was a longtime active member of the First Congregational Church in Merrimack where she was a former Sunday school teacher, and a member of the church Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the American Legion Merrimack Post 98 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed outdoor activities and her camp in Rumney. Mrs. Read attended schools in Holderness and Plymouth. She was pre-deceased by a son, Donald E. Read, who died in 1971. Survivors include a son, Robert H. Read of Campton; two grandsons, Richard Read of Mesa, Ariz., and Wesley Read of Raymond; a sister, Thelma Hawkins of Holderness; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held April 1 in Last Rest Cemetery, Merrimack. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pemi-Baker Home Health Agency 258 Highland St. Plymouth, NH 03264. The George R. Albert L. Richard, 81, of No. Pepperell Road, Hollis, died March 30, 2002, at his home after a long illness. Mr. Richard was born May 2, 1920, in Manchester, son of the late Walter J. and Laurea (Dupont) Richard. He was the husband of Armande Marie (LaRouche) Richard of Hollis, to whom he had been married for 60 years. Mr. Richard had been employed at Travelers Insurance as a claims account executive. He was an Air Force veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include three sons, A. William Richard of Martha s Vineyard, Mass., Philip Richard of Bedford and Roger Richard of Cheyenne, Wy.; two daughters, Denise Moquin of Hollis and Leanne Liberatore of Framingham, Mass.; a brother, Walter Dupont of Spring, Texas.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. John Neumann Church, Merrimack, April 2. Entombment followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Manchester. Henry Ruppel
Enjoyed gardening and woodworking
Henry Ruppel, 82, of Bedford, died March 30, 2002 at a Manchester hospital. He was born March 20, 1920, in Sheboygan, Wis., son of Johann Carl and Maria (Mueller) Ruppel and was a graduate of Sheboygan High School. He had lived in Bedford since 1971, previously residing in Bay Shore, Long Island, N.Y. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired employee of Fairchild Industries in Long Island, N.Y. Mr. Ruppel was a photographer in Monterey, Calif., in the 1940s and had maintained an interest in photography into his retirement. Mr. Ruppel enjoyed gardening, woodworking and building furniture, and traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He always fondly remembered Kohler, Wis., and the German community there in which he was raised. He was an especially good caregiver for his wife, Charlotte Shepard Ruppel, who died in 1996. Members of his family include his son, Richard R. Ruppel of Stevens Point, Wis.; two brothers, John Ruppel of Gardena, Calif., and Rey Ruppel of Jackson, Calif.; a sister, Ella R. Griebel of Saginaw, Mich.; and nieces and nephews A graveside service will be held later in the spring in the Bedford Center Cemetery. Anthony J. Rutko, 83, of Nashua, died March 29, 2002, at Southern New Hampshire Regional Medical Center in Nashua after a brief illness. Mr. Rutko was born Oct. 26, 1918, in Philadelphia, son of the late Maximillian and Mary (Wargiela) Rutko. Before retirement, he was employed at Public Service of New Jersey. He was also a member and post adjutant for the Veterans of Foreign War Merrimack Post 8641 since 1995. Mr. Rutko was a Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Frank Burghardt of Merrimack; a niece and her husband, Roberta and Alfred Latour of Merrimack; and three great-nephews, Matthew, Nathan and Daniel Latour. Veronica M. Sherman
Veronica M. Sherman, 52, of Milford, died March 26, 2002, after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She has left behind many people who loved and respected her. She was married to Gerald Sherman for 30 wonderful years, and has two sons, Aaron, 24, and Jacob, 19, both of Somerville, Mass. She leaves five sisters and two brothers: Jane Lavin of Weymouth, Mass., Julia Chang of Berlin, N.J., Leah Macomber of Barrington, R.I., Amy MacDonnell-Williams of Clayton, N.C., and Andrea Deyermond of Andover, Mass., Greg MacDonnell of Newport, R.I., and Daniel MacDonnell of Berlin, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews, several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. Sherman became a special education teacher later in her career, and worked in the Milford schools, Peterborough Middle School, and the Robinson Middle School in Lowell, Mass. She is loved by many and will be missed. A memorial service was held March 30 in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Milford. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Milford, at a later date. Joseph J. Sottile, 70, resident of Beech Hill Road, Mont Vernon, died March 25, 2002, at his home. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 21,1931, a son of the late Agostino and Anntonette (Tarrantino) Sottile. Mr. Sottile had been a resident of Mont Vernon for the past six years, and had formerly resided in the Amherst and Milford area and California for many years. He was a graduate of Colorado University at Boulder. Mr. Sottile had been employed by Litton Industries in California and Raytheon Company, Quincy, Mass. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Family members include his wife, Lindy L. (Hovis) Sottile of Mont Vernon; three daughters, Joanne Sottile Kelley of Hood River, Ore., and Jana Sottile and Aspen Sottile, both of Mont Vernon; seven sons, William Sottile of Shoreline, Wash., Kenneth Sottile of Fitchburg, Mass., John Sottile of Seneca Falls, N.Y., and Augie Sottile, Nicholas Sottile, Austin Sottile and Spencer Sottile, all of Mont Vernon; four grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Richard Sottile of Tehachapi, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. Ingrid E. Sterner

Ingrid Evalina Hagberg Sterner, 83, of South Carolina, and formerly of Milford, and wife of the late Philip G. Sterner, died March 14, 2002, at Mariner Health Care in Seneca, S.C. Born in Stromstad, Sweden, the daughter of the late Lennart and Elsa Berg Hagberg, Mrs. Sterner was a homemaker and a member of Milford United Methodist Church in Milford, where she belonged to the Helping Hands group. Surviving are two sons, Gordon Sterner of Salem, S.C., and Ronald Sterner of Longmont, Colo.; a daughter, Barbara Weiner of Salem, S.C., formerly of Milford; a stepsister, Eira Ringstadt, of Sweden; and four grandchildren, Corey, Amanda, Kurt and Craig. A memorial service is planned for 4 p.m., on Friday, April 5, at the Milford United Methodist Church. Christine M. Whitcomb, 93, of Temple, died March 24, 2002, in the Pheasantwood Harborside Healthcare Center of Peterborough. Born in Lancaster, Mass. Dec. 19, 1908, the daughter of the late C.A. and Edith A. (Farnsworth) Sanborn, she had lived in Temple for more than 65 years. She and her late husband Kenneth Whitcomb, who died in 1972, had owned and operated The Whitcomb Farm of Temple for many years. Mrs. Whitcomb was a member of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church, and previously the Bedford Seventh-day Adventist Church. Mrs. Whitcomb was pre-deceased by two brothers, Walter Hardy from Wilton, and Arthur Sanborn from Hooksett, and a sister, Evelyn Lindgren from Holden, Mass. Members of her family include one son Richard A. Whitcomb of Temple; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond M. (Janet) Rice of Conway, Mass.; two grandchildren, Thomas Whitcomb and Rebecca Whitcomb, both of Temple; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were March 29 in the Nelson Funeral Home in Wilton. Burial will be at a later date in East Cemetery, Temple.
