Hazel Balfour

NORTH HAMPTON - Hazel G. Balfour, 79, of 161 Post Road died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000 at the Catholic Medical Center, Manchester.

Born Nov. 27, 1920, in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of George and Rose (Stevens) Brownell. She was a graduate of Revere High School and attended McIntosh College in Dover. She resided in Revere, Mass., for many years before moving to North Hampton in 1960.

Mrs. Balfour worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years as an administrative assistant.

She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Hampton and was very involved in the church’s Nearly New Shop, its women’s club, coffee hours, and was a member of the Oasis Club of Exeter. A very well-read person, she enjoyed helping others.

She was the wife of the late Raymond H. Balfour, who died in 1991.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Santella of Middleton, Mass., and Donna Devaney of Landing, N. J.; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Burcham of Revere, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.

Rose Beauchemin

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Rose A. Beauchemin, 101, died Friday June 30, 2000, at the Harborside Health Care in Amesbury, Mass.

Rose was born June 18, 1899, in Manchester, the daughter of Eloi and Alma (Blanchet) Gelinas.

She moved to Newburyport at an early age. Rose was a long time communicant of St. Louis de Gonzague Parish, a former choir member and active in many church activities.

Rose was a member of the St. Jean Baptist Society and the Newburyport Golden Age Club.

Prior to retirement, Rose was a top stitcher at Mayfair Shoe Co. in Newburyport. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Rose and her late husband, William A. Beauchemin owned and operated a cotton candy and popcorn concession as well as various carnival amusement rides.

Members of the family include her two daughter, Janet (Mrs. Richard) Wilson of Rochester and Jean (Mrs. Joseph) Morse of Newburyport; tow granddaughters, Kathleen (Mrs. John) Mather of Tamworth, N.H. and Nancy (Mrs. Peter) Charron of Rochester, N.H.; a grandson, and his wife Robert and Susan Morse of Amesbury; great-grandchildren, Peter J. Charron, Jr. and Maria J. Charron both of Rochester, N.H.; several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Alfred Gelinas, Alma Glard and Eva Lemieux and the aunt of the late Antoinette Felch.

A concelebrated Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, August 3, 2000, at St. Louis de Gonzague Church with the Rev. Raymond Richard, OFM,. ;Cap. and the Rev. Raymond C. Plourde officiating. Readings were by Robert J. Morse and Peter J. Charron, Sr. the altar server was Peter J. Charron, Jr., vocal selections were sung by Kathleen Mather and R. Joseph Garand, the offertory gifts were presented by Nancy J. Charron and Maria J. Charron.

Pallbearers were Robert J. Morse, John S. Mather, Peter J. Charron, Sr. and Malcom Hewitt.

Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Newburyport where Fr. Richard offered committal prayer.

Norman Cavanaugh

ELIOT, Maine - Norman L. Cavanaugh, 78, of 10 Fore Road died suddenly at York Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2000.

Born in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Lester and Etta Simpson Cavanaugh. When he was young his family settled in Truro, Nova Scotia, where he was raised and attended schools. He graduated from high school in 1940 and soon after entered and proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps attaining the rank of second lieutenant.

After his discharge from the Army Air Corps he was married in 1946 to his loving wife of 53 years, Norma Halverson Cavanaugh. They lived for a time in the Greenfield area of Western Massachusetts, from there they moved to Kittery Point, where Mr. Cavanaugh became an outside machinist in Shop 38 of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. They raised their two daughters in Kittery Point and made it their home for 15 years.

Nearing retirement from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the family moved to Eliot and settled there for over 26 years. During this time, Mr. Cavanaugh was employed at the University of New Hampshire working in the UNH Field House, a job and people he truly enjoyed.

Mr. Cavanaugh was an avid swimmer and bike rider. He was well-known at the Greenleaf Athletic Club and the Portsmouth Pool, where he was a regular swimmer. He was also seen often riding his bicycle from home to town and back on a regular basis.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 53 years, Norma Halverson Cavanaugh of Eliot, their two daughters, Joann Jellison and her husband, Dale, of Ashland, Va. and Sheri L. Clark and her husband, James, of Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Virginia Mcdougall of Langley, British Columbia; grandchildren, Darin Jellison and his wife, Kristen, of Boston, Mass., Brooke Jellison of Richmond, Va., Jamie Clark and her fiancee, Kevin Holloway of Seattle, Wash., and Ethan Clark of Tacoma, Wash.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eliot Fire Department - Thermal Imaging Camera Fund, c/o Eliot Town Office, 141 State Road, Eliot, ME 03903.

Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

William Karcher Jr.

WAKEFIELD - William A. "Bill" Karcher Jr., 79, of Sanbornville died at the Rochester Manor Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, after a period of failing health due to Parkinson’s Disease.

Born March 30, 1921, in Warner, he was the son of Martha (Wilfert) and William A. Karcher Sr. He had lived in Sanbornville for most of his life.

Mr. Karcher served in the U.S. Army Air Corps 535th Bomb Squadron as an aerial gunner during World War II.

He worked for the Spaulding Fibre Co. in North Rochester as maintenance supervisor for 28 years. After retirement, he was a rural carrier for the United States Postal Service.

Mr. Karcher enjoyed mountain climbing, hiking, flying, skiing, and especially playing "house" with his great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of over 55 years, Marian E. (Soucy) Karcher; two daughters, Karen Brodzinski and Katherine Picard, both of Rochester; five sisters, Almira Tufts, Addie MacKay, Christine Lessard, and Martha Holmes, all of Rochester, and Waneta Wilkinson of Ossipee; one brother, Charles E. Karcher of Rochester; three grandchildren, Lori Hebert of Milton, Sherry Eastman of Hooksett, and Duane Eastman of Wells, Maine; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Joshua Hebert of Milton; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. Friends are welcome to a memorial service on Friday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, 173 Meadow St. in Sanbornville with Pastor Michelle Violette officiating. Interment will follow at Lovell Lake Cemetery in Sanbornville.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Assn., Inc., 1250 Hylan Blvd., Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY 10305-1946.

Arrangements are in the care of C. E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, Wakefield Road in Sanbornville.

Charles Perkins

PORTSMOUTH - Charles N. Perkins, 54, of 245 Middle St., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at his home.

He was born in Portsmouth on July 12, 1946, the son of Neva May (Smith) Perkins of Portsmouth and the late William H. Perkins.

Mr. Perkins had been employed as a construction worker and as a maintenance worker in apartment complexes in the Concord area.

He also had been a lobsterman with William Marconi.

He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God in Portsmouth. Mr. Perkins was an avid fisherman, hunter, and motorcyclist. He was a member of the Fish & Game Association in Pembroke.

Besides his mother survivors include five daughters, Melissa Perkins of Tilton, Tammy Swett of Concord, Amy Gouin of Concord, Jennifer Astbury of Portsmouth, and Charlene Perkins of Sanford, Maine; five grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Emerton and Frances M. Gobbi both of Portsmouth; a half-brother, Martin Burns of Berwick, Maine; several nieces and nephews; and his long-time companion, Bonnie Coleman of Dover.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Beatrice Henshaw, Ida Clairborne, and Jeannette Tibbetts; a brother, Robert Burns; and twin grandsons.

Walter Sousa

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Walter W. Sousa, 73, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000 at his home in Cambridge.

Born Dec. 3, 1926, in Cambridge, he was the son of William and Mary (Coughlin) Sousa. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a seaman second class.

Mr. Sousa worked for Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge for over 30 years and was a lifelong resident of Cambridge.

He is survived by two sons, Mark and Ricardo Sousa, both of Kittery, Maine; three sisters, Dorothy Boisvert of Winter Haven, Fla., Dolores Sherman of North Weymouth and Gail Sousa of Brookline; two brothers, Richard of Tewksbury and William of Cambridge. He also leaves six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was also the brother of the late Paul Sousa and Nancy Preble.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the John C. Burns & Sons Funeral Home, 305 Broadway, Cambridge, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Cambridge, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. WW II Navy veteran. Interment will be in Cambridge Cemetery.

Percy Hale, Centenarian
DOVER - Percy D. "Jack" Hale, 100, formerly of Waldron Towers, died Thursday, March 1, 2001 at Riverside Rest Home.

Born in Newfields on April 9, 1900, the son of William and Ezeries (St. Germaine) Hale. He lived in Winthrop, Mass., for many years and was employed at Boston’s Fenway Park. He formerly lived in Newmarket prior to coming to Dover more than 25 years ago. He was the oldest living member of the Dover Elks Lodge.

The widower of Ida Mae (Corson) Hale, who died in 1961, he is survived by a son, Donald Hale and his wife Yvonne of Dover; two daughters, Dorothy Gagne and her husband, Wilfred of Rochester, Ida Brewster and her son William of Barrington; 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Farrand who died in 1991.

Agnes Howland

KITTERY, Maine - Agnes B. Howland, 75, died Thursday morning, March 1, 2001 at the York Hospital.

Howland was born Nov. 13, 1926 in Kittery Point, the daughter of the late Robert and Isobell (Simmons) Mills. She attended local schools. Howland spent her entire life in Kittery Point and lived in the same house where she was born. In 1960, she married Thomas Howland in Kittery Point.

Over the years, Howland was known as a perfect hostess at demonstrator parties and had a knack for selling an array of different products at these functions. The parties were informative, profitable and most of all fun. She also loved to spend many hours working outside and caring for her lawn. Howland will long be remembered for her many hours of volunteer work with the area’s Meals on Wheels program and senior citizen bingo games.

Besides her husband, Howland will be sadly missed by her daughter, Katherine Taylor of Cape Neddick, her son Thomas Howland of Kittery; her two stepdaughters Katherine Lemons of Kennewick, Wash., and Gail Lampros of Bath; her sister, Grace Parent of Portsmouth, N.H., and her brother Edward Mills of Lebanon; plus her cherished 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, also several nieces and nephews.

Howland was predeceased by her infant son Thomas F. Howland plus five sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. The Rev. Real Nadeau of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church will conduct the services. Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 52 Federal St., Brunswick, Maine 04011. Spring burial will take place at a later date in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery.

Sharon Lyman

PORTSMOUTH - Sharon Teresa Lyman, 58, of 20 Farmington Drive, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness in West Palm Beach, Fla., Thursday, March 1, 2001.

Born on March 25, 1942 in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Alfred and Teresa Sparrow and the sister of Joyce Mathews. She married Richard James Lyman on Dec. 15, 1962. She worked for the Portsmouth School Department and resided in Portsmouth for most of her life where she raised four children. She was a graduate of Portsmouth for most of her life where she raised four children. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School Class of 1960 and a member of the Great Cove Boat Club. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, boating, and gardening and was an avid painter. She was beautiful, generous and kind, loved by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Richard James Lyman; two daughters, Kelly and husband Chad Tuttle of Houston, Kimberly and husband Michael Wayne of Rochester; her two sons, Steven Lyman and his wife Lisa of Baltimore and Douglas Lyman and his wife Lori of Portsmouth. She also leaves five grandchildren, Johnny Lyman, Danielle and Brett Tuttle and Leslie and Michael Wayne. Sharon was also blessed with the lifelong friendship of Nancy and Joe Gobbi and Joan and Dick Martin. She is predeceased by her sister Jean Graper. A service will be held in Portsmouth in the spring. The family request in lieu of flowers that a tree or flowers be planted in Sharon’s memory.

Albert Mackle Jr.

CONCORD - Albert Willcox Mackle Jr., 73, formerly of Meredith and Durham, died Feb. 28, 2001, of ASL (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) at home.

The son of Albert W. and Isabelle (Peterson) Mackie, he was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1927. He graduated from the Choate School in Wallingford, Conn. and from Brown University.

He was a World War II veteran attached to the United States Naval Construction Battalion No. 61 in the Philippines. He was employed by the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company in Rhode Island, Maine, and New Hampshire and was primarily involved in converting the telephone offices to dial operation.

In 1961 he and his family acquired land on Pemigewasset Lake in Meredith and built Clearwater Campground. That year he began teaching at Inter-Lakes High School. In 1968 he received an advanced degree from the University of New Hampshire. He then taught for eight years at Exeter High School before retiring.

Following his retirement from teaching, Mr. Mackie and his son Jonathan built Meredith Woods Four Season Camping Area on Route 104 in Meredith.

Mr. Mackie was active in the family campground industry from its inception. He served on the boards of directors of his state, regional and national trade associations and served as president of his state and regional trade associations.

He was a founder of the National Museum of Family Camping and its treasurer. He was elected into the Family Camping Hall of Fame.

He was the husband of Shelia (Eckstein) Mackie for 50 years. Besides his wife, he leaves his daughter, Janet A. Mackie of Wayland, Mass., and his sons, Andrew W. Mackie of Los Gatos, Calif., Kenneth P. Mackie of Seattle, Wash., and Jonathan D. Mackie of Meredith; also two grandchildren in Wayland, Mass and two grandchildren in Seattle, Wash.

A memorial service and time of remembrance will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Route 25, Meredith on Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m. A reception will be held at the church following the service.

In place of flowers a memorial gift may be made to the Building Fund at Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 635, Meredith, NH 03253.

Dolores Meske Robinson

BARRINGTON - Dolores Meske Robinson, 80, died Friday, March 2, 2001 at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center in Dover after a period of failing health.

Born on May 19, 1920, Dolores Mae Whittenberg, the daughter of John R. and Frances (Wilson) Whittenberg in Taft, Calif. She raised her two children and lived in California until June 1999 when she moved to 3 Stonewall Road and Pond View Shared Home in Barrington to be near her son, Larry.

Dolores was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother who will be sadly missed. She enjoyed painting and sewing and volunteered at the Solano Guild Medical Thrift Shop in Vallejo, Calif., for more than 20 years.

She is survived by her sons, Lawrence Meske and his wife, Barbara of Barrington, and Michael Meske and his wife Sandra of Ketchikan, Alaska; and grandchildren, Greg Meske and Samantha Ulibarri of Suisan City, Calif., Melinda and Jeff Wilkinson of Dunbarton, Kurt Pearsall of Manchester, Ashlie Mooney of Barrington, Michelle Meske and Gregory Moulton of Seattle, Molly and Sean Longanecker of Herndon, Va., Harold and Gabrielle Meske of Eugene, Ore., Matthew Meske of Ketchikan, Alaska, and several great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband Greg Meske in 1967, husband James "Robbie" Robinson in 1985, and her brother, John R. Whittenberg Jr.

Relatives and friends may call Monday, March 5, 2001 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Hope Community Church at 197 Sixth St. in Dover with the Rev. Steve Spearing, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Barrington in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the Barrington School Foundation, 41 Province Lane, Barrington, N.H. 03825.

George Scott

DOVER - George Patrick Kevin "Scotty" Scott, 65, of 105 Locust St., died Friday, March 2, 2001 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Derby Shire, England on May 22, 1935, the son of George P. and Nora (Doughty) Scott, he served in the British Army and moved here from South America in 1962. He was a member of the American Legion.

He was a painter by trade and worked for the local painters’ union. Scotty loved soccer and was a big reader of war history.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald Scott and his wife, Brinda of Gresham, Ore., Jonathan Scott and his wife, Shim of Guyana, South America; three grandchildren, Suzanne, Kevin Ronald and Meagan; a sister, Patricia Schoff and her husband, Wayne, of South Berwick, Maine, and nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. Graveside funeral service will be held in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in South Berwick, Maine. Arrangements are by Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.

Ruth Silva

PORTSMOUTH - Ruth (Price) Silva, 90, widow of Joseph P. Silva, of 34 Salter St., died Thursday, March 1, 2001 at Langdon Place in Dover.

She was born in Wildwood, N.J., on March 6, 1910, the daughter of the late Albert and Bessie (Harvey) Price.

Mrs. Silva was a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston, Class of 1931.

She had taught piano and voice for more than 50 years in Portsmouth. She played piano for the Kennet School of Dancing and for many years was the soloist at the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) in Portsmouth as well as many other churches. She was a member of the Portsmouth Bahai Community.

Survivors include three sons, Alden Marshall of Hudson, Barry Marshall of Lexington, Mass., and Bruce Marshall of Greenland and Hobe Sound, Fla.; three grandsons, Craig Marshall of Whitethorn, Calif., Timothy Marshall of Hudson and Lee Marshall of Hudson; a great-grandson, Benjamin Marshall of Hudson; a sister, Patricia Balcom of Coronado, Calif.; a brother, James A. Price of Englewood, Fla., several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date. No flowers, please. Donations in her memory may be made to the Center for Seniors, 127 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.
