Ray Cole, retired Dover firefighter

DOVER - Lynwood Ray "Babe" Cole, 89, of 15 Back River Road, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born March 28, 1913, in Dover, he was the son of Franklin Marshall and Mary L. (Malo) Cole.

He was a firefighter for the City of Dover Fire Department for 35 years retiring in 1976.

He was a member of Moses Paul Lodge No. 96, F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Marlea (Pitts) Cole of Dover; three sons, Ronald W. Cole of Dover, Richard M. Cole of Florida and Roy Cole of Rochester; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Smith of Brewers, Maine, and Mrs. Wayne (Marilyn) Bailey of Windham; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Bertha M. Cole, and his first son, Raymond C. Cole.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the charity of one’s choice.

Mary Eide

MANCHESTER - Mary E. Eide, 79, of 200 Hanover St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover.

Born March 2, 1923, in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of John J. and Helen N. (Collins) Walker.

Mrs. Eide was a graduate of Fitton High School, East Boston, Mass., and later attended business college. She was a resident of Manchester for 15 years and had lived over 40 years in Whitman, Mass., prior to moving here.

She was retired from Foxboro Corporation where she was employed for 10 years.

While in Whitman she was a communicant of Holy Ghost Church and was a member of Sodality of Holy Ghost Church.

She was a member of AARP.

Family members include three sons; Kenneth G. Eide and his wife, Pokcho, of Miliani, Hawaii, David J. Eide and his wife, Marjo Carpenter, of Medford, N.J., and Gerald T. Eide and his wife, Molly Kaynor, of Wendell, Mass.; one daughter, Mary E. Eide of Lee; one brother, Joseph Walker of Barefoot Bay Park, Fla.; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, George K. Eide who died in August of 1998; a daughter, Anne L. Eide; two sisters, Marguerite Best and Anne Lockart; and three brothers, John J. Walker, Francis P. Walker and John Walker.

Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, at St. Charles Church with the Rev. Paul Gregoire, pastor as celebrant. Burial will be 2 p.m. at St. James Cemetery, Whitman, Mass.

Memorial donations may be made to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, 789 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Hazen Hayward

PORTSMOUTH - Hazen C. "Chuck" Hayward, 82, husband of Alyce M. (Hook) Hayward, of 19 Stark St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Baring, Maine on May 23, 1920, the son of Henry Clay and Blanche (Howland) Hayward.

Mr. Hayward graduated first in his class from the Marine City High School in Marine City, Mich., where he was class valedictorian and served as class president, graduating at the age of 17. He was a graduate of St. Steven’s, CA Business College, Class of 1939.

In 1940, he went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until he entered in to the Navy in 1941. He served in the United States Navy during World War II with the Seabees from 1941-1945, entering into the Naval Reserves to total a combined service of 34 years in the Navy.

Mr. Hayward played on the Bldg. 86 "HAS BEENS" Inter-Shop Softball League at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard winning the Championship 1948-1955.

From 1950-1980 he was employed for the Internal Revenue Service where he received the "Gallatan Award" for his outstanding work and was presently employed as a public accountant in the Portsmouth area. During his high school years he was a talented athlete excelling in basketball, baseball and running track where he held the sprint record in the 100 yard dash for 30 years. Mr. Hayward was also an Allstate Quarterback at the age of 16.

He was a member of St. John’s Lodge No. 1 F. & A.M. of Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. Consistory 32 degree of Nashua; Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord; member and past commander of Emerson Hovey Post No. 168, VFW of Portsmouth; and a member and past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No.97 in Portsmouth. He served as exalted ruler in 1976; N.H. state president in 1983; district deputy - N.H. South in 1984 and was a past grand lodge committeeman of Lodge Activities where he served for many years.

Besides his wife of 57 years, survivors include his children, Terry Hayward of Michigan; Marilyn Landers of Milford; Nancy Dube of Simpsonville, S.C.; and Clay Hayward of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clint Hayward of Calais, Maine and John Hayward of North Carolina; five sisters, Patty Hayward of Calais, Maine; Jeri-Mae McCoy of California; Elaine Johnson of Meddy Bemps, Maine; Sara Cameron of Calais, Maine, and Ann Hacker of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; many nieces and nephews; a brother, Sam Hayward and a sister, Corliss Keefe, predeceased him.

Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Friday 4 to 7 p.m. with Masonic services by St. John’s Lodge No. 1F & A.M. at 4 p.m.; followed by VFW services by Emerson Hovey Post No. 168 at 4:15 p.m. and Elks service by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 97 at 6:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Elk’s National Foundation, c/o BPOE No. 97, P.O. Box 143, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Barbara Hopkins

LEBANON, Maine - Barbara A. Hopkins, 70, of Lebanon, died May 27, 2002, at home after a long illness.

She was born in Somerville, Mass., April 5, 1932, the daughter of George and Sophie Mae (Chesnick) West, and attended Somerville schools.

A resident of this area since 1990, she lived previously in Billerica, Mass. She had been employed with Raytheon in Waltham, Mass., and for many years at the VA Hospital in Bedford, Mass.

Family members said that she liked to craft, crochet, read, travel, and sing, but the most important aspect of her life was as a mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her mother of Saugus, Mass.; her husband of 50 years, William H. Hopkins of Lebanon; a son, William G. Hopkins of Waterboro; two daughters, Kathleen A. Morey of Springvale, Cheryl M. Crear of Billerica, Mass.; a brother, George West of Saugus, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday in Holy Family Church. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.

Ralph Whitehouse

ARLINGTON, Texas - Ralph "Teddy" Whitehouse, 46, of Arlington, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at John Peter Smith Hospital in Forth Worth after a long illness.

He was born in Plymouth, Mass., the son of Eugene Whitehouse of North Carolina and Valerie (Dickson) Whitehouse of Somersworth, N.H. He attended Noble High School and worked as a self-employed painter. He loved woodburning, cooking, the ocean and lake and his animals.

Members of his family include his parents; his wife, Arlene of Texas; two children, Jami and Jason, both of Texas; two sisters, Kelly Orta and husband, Manuel of Arlington, and Robin Whitehouse and her close friend, Cherie Stockman of Somersworth; three brothers, Eugene and wife, Michelle of Hampton, N.H., Donald and wife Barbara, of Milton, N.H., Mark and wife, Deborah of East Rochester, N.H.; paternal grandmother, Muriel Whitehouse of Rochester; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bo Widmark

DOVER - Bo Johan Widmark, 86, of 4 Briarwood Lane, died early Saturday, May 25, 2002, at his residence after a period of failing health.

Born May 29, 1915, in Karlskrona, Sweden, he was the son of Fredrick Olof and Gerda (Beckstrom) Widmark.

He grew up on the island of Vaxholm in the Stockholm archipelago. As a lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed the recreation of competitive sports and enjoyed participating in a variety of them, including track, handball, skiing and sailing. Preferring athletics to academics, he spent three years in the north of Sweden, after completing secondary school, busying himself at various positions within the logging industry.

Realizing that this was not the sort of life he hoped to lead, he returned to Stockholm and earned his degree in civil engineering from Stockholm’s Tekniska Istitut in 1938. He found a position, as the first employee, in his brother’s fledgling firm, Jacobsson & Widmark AB. Engineering Consulting Company.

Having found experience working with his brother, he set out to conquer his ambitions by starting his own construction firm in the early 1940s. Widmark & Platzer AB. would go on, by the 1960s, to attain the status as one of Sweden’s leading construction firms.

He married Barbro Ann Wahlman in 1947 and settled in Djurshohn, Sweden, where together they raised their family. He emigrated from Sweden to the Canary Islands in 1971 and later to the French Riviera in 1975 where he remained a resident until his death.

He is remembered as a man of uncompromised moral integrity, whose firm handshake carried more value than any written contract. He distinguished himself as a dedicated and diligent worker.

Known affectionately by his grandchildren and loved ones as "Farfar," Swedish for father’s father, he died just as he lived; loved and cherished by all who knew him.

Survivors include three sons; Rick and his wife, Anna, and their children, Marcus and Niclas of Houston, Texas; Peter and his children, Jonathan, Jennifer and Bo of Dover; John and his wife, Maria, and their son, Christian of Dover.

There will be no calling hours or services. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the American Lung Association of NH, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.

Arrangements under the direction of Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., and Oyster River Crematory, Barrington.

Harland Worster

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - Harland S. Worcester, 72, of West Golf Boulevard, died May 16, 2002, at Hospice & Homecare By The Sea, Boca Raton.

He was born in Rochester, N.H., on March 1, 1930, the son of Ernest and Eva (Reed) Worster. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1948. He had served in the United States Marine Corps. He had been a resident of Florida since 1995.

Mr. Worster had worked as a foreman for Midway Excavation and for Pike Industries, prior to his retirement.

At one time, he taught R.O.T.C. students at Sky Haven Airport, Rochester. He enjoyed piloting an aircraft and gardening. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 7 in Rochester and the "Quiet Birdmen Association".

Surviving family members include his wife, Florence (Pomerleau) Worster of Pompano Beach; his children, Don Worster of Milton Mills, N.H., Paula Winton of Palm Bay, June Morgan of Milton, N.H., and Jean Geautreau of Palm Bay; his stepchildren, Henry Lizotte Jr. of Rochester, N.H., and Susan (Worster) Lizotte and her husband, Jerome, of Rochester; a sister, Virginia Lachance of Rochester; a stepmother, Alice Worster of Somersworth; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester. The Rev. Cynthia Nickerson, pastor of Bethany Methodist Church in East Rochester, officiating.

Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Berwick, Maine. Memorial donations may be directed to either Hospice By The Sea, 1531 West Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, Fla., or to the Kidney Foundation, One Tremont St., Concord, NH. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Ronald Abad
LITCHFIELD - Ronald M. Abad, 59, of Litchfield, died suddenly, July 29, 2002, while vacationing in the Lakes Region.

Born in New York City, May 25, 1943, he was the son of Maurice and Bernice (Cilley) Abad. He had been a Litchfield resident for many years.

Mr. Abad served in the Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict.

He worked for Nashua Corporation for several years and later for Beebe Rubber Co.

Family members include his wife of 40 years, Marie Elena M. (George) Abad of Litchfield; a son, Marc R. Abad of Bedford; a daughter, Karen Harris of Goffstown; three grandchildren, Ashley Abad, Alex Abad, and Benjamin Harris; a sister, Jan Adams of Bermuda; a brother, Gary Spurling of Rochester; nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A memorial mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Francis Church, 9 St. Francis Way, Litchfield.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack St., Suite 1, Manchester, NH 03101-2244.

Hope Clapper

SOMERSWORTH - Hope Karen Clapper, 52, of 1 Market St., Somersworth and formerly of Central Towers of Dover, died at her residence on Tuesday, July 30, 2002.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, Dover.

Constance Cook

ROCHESTER - Constance Cook, 56, of 77B Wakefield St., died Friday July 26, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born May 25, 1946, in Eagle Lake, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Delina (Martin) Caron.

Mrs. Cook has lived in Rochester most of her life She was employed at Colby footwear in Rochester until her retirement in 1982. She enjoyed cooking during the holidays.

Members of her family include her sons, Dan Caron and his wife, Ruth, of Rochester, Robert Cook of Milton and Tim Cook of Rochester; a daughter, Cathy Cook of Rochester; 10 grandchildren and a brother, Edumond Caron of Platsmouth, N.B.

She is predeceased by her husband, Wayne Cook, who died in 2000; her son, Kevin Cook, who died in 2002; her brother, Larry Caron; and her sister, Joanne Valley.

A memorial calling hour will be held Friday 6 to 7 p.m. in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester, with a memorial service to be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Gonic.

Wayne Frost

BERWICK, Maine - Wayne C. Frost, 64, of Knox Lane, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital, Salem, N.H., following a long illness.

Born in St. Albans, Dec. 12, 1937, he was the son of Harold R. and Harriet R. (Lowell) Frost.

Mr. Frost had been a resident here since 1968, having lived in Dover, N.H., previously. He was employed by Tycom Inc., formerly Simplex Cable, since 1986 and had previously been employed by Kidder Press.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an outdoorsman. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Family members include his wife of 39 years, Marie E. (Bickford) Frost of Berwick; one son, Brian W. Frost of Berwick; one daughter, Leona L. Frost Shorey of Dover; one brother, Gerald M. Frost of St. Albans; one sister, Joyce Salley of Pittsfield; two grandchildren, Taryn L. Gourdouros of Dover and Tanner R. Frost of Dover; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday, 11 a.m., with the Rev. Steve Spearing, pastor of Hope Community Church officiating. Following cremation, burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.

Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to benefit amyloidosis research in memory of Wayne Frost to Lahey Clinic Hematology Education and Research Fund, c/o of Dr. Neil Weiner, Department of Hematology, 41 Mall Road, Burlington, MA 01805. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Carl Huntress

SOMERSWORTH - Carl W. Huntress, 71, of 195 Main Street died at his residence on July 26, 2002. He was born on Oct. 10, 1930, in Dover, the son of Leona Huntress. He had lived in the Dover, Somersworth and Berwick, Maine, area for most of his life.

Mr. Huntress was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Somersworth.

Marie McManus

ROCHESTER - Marie H. "Lena" (Bourque) McManus, 96, of Rochester, and formerly of Lynn, Mass., died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Rochester Manor Nursing Home after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Hugh A. McManus Jr.

Born and raised in Sluice Point, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of John E. and Mary Jane (Stoddard) Bourque. She moved to Lynn in 1921 and remained here. In recent years she lived and was cared for at the home of her son, Robert, in Rochester.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed at the General Electric, West Lynn Plant in Massachusetts. After her marriage, she remained a devoted mother and housewife.

She is survived by four sons, Robert J. of Rochester, Charles F. of Conway, Paul of Bristol, Va., and Hugh III of Council Bluffs, Iowa; five daughters, Eleanor Tournas of Lynn, Carol Brown of Lynn, Claire Harold of West Peabody, Mass., Delores Fisher of Somersworth and Linda Masson of Bellingham, Mass.; 31 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.

A funeral will be held on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the Solimine Landergan & Rhodes Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.
