Donald McGlone

DOVER - Donald T. McGlone, 73, of 14 Richardson Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at his home following a brief illness.

Born in Dover April 20, 1931, he was the son of James H. and Mary Lebrecque McGlone.

He was a lifelong resident of Dover and was a retired electrician from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, 490.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.

He was a member of Elks Lodge 184 of Dover and the Loyal Order of Moose. He enjoyed hunting with friends.

Family members include his wife of 56 years, Marie E. (Lamb) McGlone of Dover; one son, Robert J. McGlone of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Mary Chase of Dover, Mona Hapgood of Rollinsford, and Rita Helsey of Rochester; two grandsons, Dean M. McGlone and his wife, Cathy, of Hanover, Pa., and Sean G. McGlone and his wife, Elizabeth, of Baltimore; six great-grandchildren, Amanda McGlone, Katie McGlone, Dalton McGlone, Rachael McGlone, Dylan McGlone and Rhiannon McGlone.

He was predeceased by a son, Sgt. Michael T. McGlone, who died in Viet Nam on Sept. 11, 1969; and by brothers, Raymond, Joseph, Albert, Bernard, George, and James, and sister, Madeline Bennett.

Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.

Edward Bailey
DOVER - Edward Earl Bailey, 91, 11 Landing Way, Dover, N.H., died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at St. Ann’s Healthcare, Dover, following a short illness.

Born in Danville, Vt., on March 21, 1913, he was the son of Mittie Church Bailey and Edward Wynn Bailey. He was raised as a young man on the Church family dairy farm in Danville. He was educated in local schools and as a young man, loved skiing and played basketball and baseball.

A product of the depression, he left farming and Vermont in 1937 and moved to Nashua, where he married Elizabeth Bennett Welch. They raised a daughter, Patricia and Elizabeth’s four children, Muriel, George, Rosalie and Irving in Nashua, until Elizabeth’s untimely death in a car accident in 1959.

His stepson, Irving, had also died in a car accident in 1939. He married Ila Mae Irwin, a long-time friend, in 1961, and they also made their home in Nashua with her son, William until her death from heart disease in 1989. An avid Red Sox fan, he took delight in a large extended family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was an accomplished gardener, cabinet-maker and story teller. During his working lifetime, he was employed in woodworking, textiles and upon his retirement in 1978, he was employed by the Batesville Casket Company.

He moved to Dover, N.H. in 1998, to be closer to his daughter and was a resident at Riverview Apartments on Green Street in Dover until he moved into his daughter’s home in 2001.

A gregarious man, he was known for his jovial manner and sense of humor and had a large group of friends during his lifetime. Friends knew him as a devoted Red Sox fan who could cite baseball statistics easily and continued to keep a box score while he watched the games.

He is survived by a daughter, Patricia Bailey Bailly and her husband, Richard Bailly, 11 Landing Way, Dover, with whom he made his home until his recent illness. He is also survived by grandchildren, Robin Gestal and her husband, Kenneth, of New Canaan, Conn.; R. Jeffrey Bailly and his wife, Maggie, of Newburyport, Mass.; and John Bailly and his wife, Debra, also of Newburyport; great-grandchildren, Dean, Jonathan and Bailly Gestal and Megan, Richard and Thomas Bailly.

He is also survived by stepson, George Welch and wife, Mihoko of Nashua and stepson, William Irwin of Milford; and stepdaughter, Rosalie Williams of Pepperell, Mass. and foster-daughter, Catherine Miller of St. Petersburg, Fla.; step-grandchildren, Betty Welch and George Welch, Kevin Irwin, Ruthanne Holt, Betty Herget, Bernard Scott Williams, Rosalie Jane Kimball, Richard Charles Williams, Robert Williams, Eleanor Jones, John Williams, Brian Williams, Heidi Bouchard, Marian Ford and step-great-grandchildren, Olivia and Isaac Welch, Alan and Tige Herget, Ryan and Christopher Kimball, Rosalie and Erin Williams, Ashley and Dustin Williams, Branden and Sarajane Ford, Ben and Ryan Williams, Jessica Williams and Marc Ford.

A memorial service will be held at the Wiggin-Purdy McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover,N.H. on Friday at 9:30 a.m. The family will attend burial services at Evergreen Cemetery in Nashua. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to My Friend’s Place, Washington St., Dover, N.H.

Bessie Bunnell

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Mrs. Bessie E. "Bess" (DeWitt) Bunnell, 74, of 399 Emery’s Bridge Road, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at the York Hospital in York, Maine.

Born in Dover, N.H., on Sept. 2, 1930, she was the daughter of Carroll E. and Flora F. (Coro) DeWitt.

She was employed as a manager for King’s Department Store, formerly of Portsmouth, retiring after 18 years. She was a member of Women of the Moose 444 of Portsmouth.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Woodrow P. Bunnell; four children, Viola F. Caldwell and her husband, Bruce, of
Kittery, Betty L. Ripberger and her husband, Mike, of Bradford, N.H., Judy A. Dale of Kittery, and Thomas F. Bunnell and his wife, Lucille, of Sanford; eight grandchildren, Tammy LaClair and her husband, Phil, of Kittery, Tina McLean and her husband, Tim, of Eliot, Chief Michael Ripberger, USN and his wife, Lori, of San Diego, Calif., Michelle Smith and her friend, Derek, of Portsmouth, N.H., Kristina LaFerte of Bradford, N.H., Stephen Dale and his wife, Stacia, of Newton, N.H., Cindy Marsh and her husband, Don, of Rochester, N.H., and Jesse Bunnell of Sanford; 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Woodrow P. Bunnell, Jr.

Geneva Brown

NORTH BERWICK - Geneva "Jan" S. Brown, 69, of Elm Street, passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, after a long battle with diabetes.

She was born June 25, 1935, in North New Portland, Maine, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Clements) Gordon.

She and her husband, Earl Brown, owned and operated J & B’s Restaurant in South Berwick and Brown’s Oil in North Berwick for many years. She was a member of the Bible Speaks in South Berwick. She especially loved her camp in Lincoln, and fishing.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl Brown in 1994. She is survived by a brother, Louis Gordon; two sisters, Thelma and her husband, Frank Gleason; and Nora Luce, all of Anson, Maine; nieces and nephews, Steven and Helen Gordon, Ronald and Maureen Gleason, Roland and Linda Gleason, Skip and Mary Gleason and Scooter Gleason; and special friends, Robert, Andrea and Joe Pershey and Dot Chadbourne.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. in the Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick, Maine.

Alice Duchette

SPRINGVALE, Maine - Alice M. Duchette, 80, of Springvale, Maine, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

She was born in Springvale on Oct. 5, 1924. She was the daughter of Alfred and Marie Rose Plamondon Morin. She attended local schools, and for several years she worked for Universal Shoe Co., as well as Spencer Press until her retirement in 1988.

She was a devoted Christian, and an active communicant of Holy Family Church in Sanford. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne, and the churches Cursillo movement. She also volunteered her time as a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and was a major fund raiser, and volunteer for the Special Olympics.

She loved to bake, and could be remembered around town as the "Bean Lady" for her volunteering to make baked beans for several area bean suppers. She enjoyed crocheting, doing arts and crafts, and being a professional coupon shopper. She also had a wonderful sense of humor, and often played practical jokes on her friends and family. She was the type of person who lit up a room just by entering.

Predeceasing her was her husband, Louis Duchette, in 1998, and several siblings.

Surviving is a daughter, Constance Demchak of Branford, Conn.; three sons, Daniel of Wells, Ronald of Lebanon, and Robert of Waterboro. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and other family members.

Visiting hours for Alice will be held on Thursday, Oct. 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the LaFrance-Lambert Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford, Maine.

A 9 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at Holy Family Church in Sanford. Committal services will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.

Lansing English

MIDDLETON - Mr. J. Lansing English, 92, of Alton, N.H., formerly of Forest Street, Middleton, husband of the late Dorothy B. (Hunter) English, died Monday morning, Oct. 18, 2004, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robert Caley, with his son, Jay and daughter-in-law, Sheila English, also at his bedside.

Born in Chateaugay, N.Y., Sept. 21, 1912, he was the son of Floyd J. and Florence E. (Lansing) English. He received his education in the Chateaugay school system, graduated from Chateaugay High School and attended Cornell University.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, earning the rank of chief pay clerk.

He had been employed for many years in sales and management. At the time of his retirement, he was employed by the Town of Middleton in the Electric Light Department where he served as manager for 11 years.

A resident of the Town of Middleton for more than 50 years, he was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Middleton and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 227 of Middleton. In his younger years, he was an amateur pilot and was an avid automobile enthusiast for most of his life. His love for hunting was passed on to his son and grandsons. He had a love for traveling with his late wife, touring the United States and Eastern Canada in their travel trailer. They also traveled throughout Europe.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda E. and Robert E. Caley of Alton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jay Hunter and Sheila M. English of Shapleigh, Maine; six grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances W. Selkirk of New York and Marion Mechler of Florida; a long-time friend of the family and his companion for the past several years, Margaret King of Frankfort, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Beatrice, Robert, Richard, John and Harold English.

A funeral will be held from the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) Danvers, Friday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church, Middleton at 10 a.m.

Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Oakdale Cemetery, Middleton. Visiting hours Thursday 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, inquire at 978-774-6600.

Gerald Goulet

BERWICK, Maine - Gerald L. Goulet, 78, of 4 Junction Road, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Williston, Vt., on Dec. 14, 1925, he was the son of William and Lazarine (Michaud) Goulet. He was a member of the Portsmouth Moose and enjoyed weekly dances at the Moose Hall with his wife and his many friends. He also liked to travel to Seattle, Wash., to visit his daughters. He was an avid woodworker, creating intricate pieces using his scroll saw.

Prior to his retirement, he was a construction worker for Massachusetts Union Local 14, and also operated his dairy farm from 1954 to 1968. He had also been a member of the Berwick Planning Board. After his retirement, he enjoyed working with his children, from driving dump trucks to transplanting seedlings. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church in South Berwick. He was loved by all who knew him, and was affectionately known as "Pepere".

He is survived by his wife of 57 years ,Therese L. (Pinard) Goulet; five sons and their wives, Richard and Patricia Goulet of South Berwick, Donald and Debra Will Goulet, Roger Goulet, Raymond and Karen Goulet, all of Berwick, Robert and Tina Goulet of Rochester, N.H.; four daughters, Doris Goulet of Seattle, Wash., Lorraine and her husband, Dave Tuttle, of South Berwick, Pauline and her husband, Jeff Holshouser, of Berwick, Alice and her husband, Leo Stull, of Seattle; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Roland Goulet of Dover, N.H.; a sister, Rita Boulanger of Somersworth, N.H.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survives him.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s Church, Young St., South Berwick with the Rev. John Skehan, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Rollinsford, N.H.

Lona Hewitt

HAMPTON - Lona M. Hewitt, 90, of 56 Mary Batchelder Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004 at Exeter Hospital.

Born in Northwood, Feb. 20, 1914, she was the daughter of Harlie and Lizzie (Arlin) Locke.

She attended Boston College and McIntosh Business College and was retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where she was employed in the accounting department. In addition, she had worked in accounting at the University of New Hampshire.

A resident of Hampton for the past 10 years, she had previously been a resident of Huckins Road in Madbury and Bellamy Road in Dover. She raised her family in the Boston area.

She was a member of the Portsmouth Advent Christian Church and a former longtime member of Hope Community Church, Dover and the Boston Advent Christian Church. She was a member of the Women’s Home and Foreign Mission Society. During her years at the Dover Advent Christian Church, she was treasurer and was very instrumental in the planning for the new Dover church building and renovation of the parsonage.

Many summers were spent at the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center.

She was active with the Girls Scouts of America and was a leader in Dorchester, Mass. Since living in Hampton, she was very active with area senior citizens and she joined the Lions Club. She enjoyed playing games with her many friends. Her wonderful sense of humor was well known to family and friends.

Family members include two sons, Robert W. Hewitt, Sr. of Ocala, Fla., and Merton W. Hewitt, Jr. and his wife, Maxine, of Hampton; five daughters, Marjorie G. Brill and her husband, David, of Maxwell, N. M., Harlene R. Fabian and her husband, Robert, of Charlton, Mass., Merlyn Rutherford and her husband, James, of Effingham, Elisabeth H. Bantz and her husband, Harold, of Columbia, Ill., and Patricia J. Van Alstyne of Lenox, Mass.; one sister, Dora E. Bryant of Berwick, Maine; 22 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Merton W. Hewitt, Sr., who died Jan. 19, 1980; by a daughter, Myrtha Freethy; by a son-in-law, Sears R. Van Alstyne; by two brothers, Clifton Locke and Reginald Locke; and by two sisters, Rita Tuttle and Doris Pike.

Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Portsmouth Advent Christian Church, 634 State St., Portsmouth. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Russell Carle, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick, Maine at 2 p.m. on Friday.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Alton Bay Christian Conference Center, 5 Broadway, P.O. Box 321, Alton Bay, NH 03810.

Arrangements are under the direction of Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Philip Hoyt

RYE - Philip C. "Phil" Hoyt, 88, of 5 Harborview Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born on June 6, 1916, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of Philip and Ruth (Perry) Hoyt.

He served in the U.S. Army, 10th Mountain Division during World War II serving in Italy. He trained at Camp Hale, Colo., and Camp Swift, Texas. He received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, European Theater Ribbon with three Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.

He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and then in 1958 with a master’s degree in electrical engineering. He attended MIT Graduate School in the summer of 1952 and Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology from 1955-1956.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an engineer in submarine design.

He was a member of the Portsmouth Chapter of the Order of DeMolay; life member of Naval Lodge 184 AF & AM of Kittery, Maine; member of Washington Chapter 3 of Royal Arch Masons, Portsmouth; Davenport Council 5 of Royal and Select Masters, Portsmouth; DeWitt Clinton Commandery, Knight Templars; Scottish Rite; Subic Bay Consistory 32 degree; Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord; Portsmouth Shrine Club; Past President of Portsmouth Country Club; Past Director of NH Seniors Golf Association; member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; New England Chapter of the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division; New England Ski Museum; Friends of Odiorne Point and a member of the Professional Engineers of NH.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lucille (Fournier) Hoyt on Jan. 19, 1997; three sisters, Priscilla Zello, Gloria George, and Phyllis Halloway; and three brothers, Glenn Hoyt, Frederick Hoyt and Perry Hoyt.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. George (Frances) Plate of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Mrs. Noble (Phyllis) Halloway of Leesburg, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Friday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home, Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with Masonic services by Naval Lodge No. 184 AF & AM of Kittery, Maine at 5:45 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Phil’s memory to the Richard D. McDonough Caddy Scholarship Foundation, 16 Salmon St., Manchester, NH 03104. Please make checks payable to McDonough Scholarship Foundation.

Rose LaBrie

DOVER - Rose Anna LaBrie, 95, Dover Point Road, formally of Essex St., died on Oct. 19, 2004.

She was born in Dover, on Oct. 7, 1909, the daughter of Joseph A. and Rose Anna (Arnold) LaBrie of Dover.

She lived in Dover all her life and worked as an office clerk for American Cleaners for 39 years retiring in 1974. She was a member of the ACA – Canadois Society and an active member of the St. Charles Church.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Charles Church, 577 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. on Thursday, Oct. 21 with the Rev. Paul Gregoire, pastor, officiating.

A burial will follow at St. Charles Cemetery, Old Rochester Road, Dover, N.H.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wentworth Home, 795 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.
