Mary Frances Butterfield

EXETER - Mary Frances "Mif" Butterfield, of 2 Brentwood Road, died Monday, May 31, 2004, on her 69th birthday at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born May 31, 1935, in Kingston, N.Y., the daughter of Thelma (DePuy) Hoornbeek Marl of Kingston and the late John C. Hoornbeek. She was a 1953 graduate of Dana Hall in Wellesley, Mass.

In 1957 she received her bachelor’s degree in dietary science from The University of Syracuse in New York, where she met her husband of 46 years, Norman A. Butterfield, of Exeter.

She had resided in Exeter since 1975, coming from Sidney, N.Y.

She worked for 25 years as office manager at Philbrick’s Sales and Service in North Hampton, retiring last year.

Of the utmost importance to her were her friends and family.

In addition to her mother and husband, family members include two daughters, Jill A. Butterfield and her partner, Mike Leary, of Dover, Gretchen G. Wolfe and her husband, Michael, of Pittsfield; one son, Norman J. "Jack" Butterfield and his wife, Naomi Notman, of Denver, Colo.; two grandsons, Tucker and Casey Jack Wolfe; two sisters, Lesley Andersen and Tracey Connor, of Cragsmoor, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 High St., Hampton, on Saturday, June 5 at 10 a.m.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The family requests that flowers please be omitted.

Walter Dutton

ROCHESTER - Walter E. Dutton, 80, a longtime resident of Rochester, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.

Born Jan. 31, 1924, in Greensboro, Vt., he was the son of George and Mildred (Merriam) Dutton. Raised in Rochester, he was a graduate of Spaulding High School, and resided in Rochester for most of his life.

He had worked as a farmhand for the Champlin family in Rochester. He was a retired truck driver with the former William Vickers & Son of Farmington.

He is survived by his sister, Esther Parshley of Farmington; also several nieces and nephews, including William E. Stone Jr. of Barrington and a niece, Pamela Winstead of Brooksville, Fla. He was predeceased by five siblings.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 18 at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St., Farmington, N.H., at 11 a.m. Visitation is prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to 11 am. Interment will follow at Rochester Cemetery on Franklin Street in Rochester. If desired, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Lela Frost

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Lela A. Frost, 83, most recently of The Lodges, Springvale, died at her home on Tuesday, June 1, 2004.

Born in South Berwick on Sept. 8, 1920, she was the daughter of Alfred and Lela (Purrington) Parent. She was a lifelong resident of South Berwick.

She was employed as a cook and housekeeper for several years at Homestead of Kittery from where she retired in 1993. She had been employed by shoe shops in her earlier years.

Family members include two sons, Chester Wayne Frost and his wife, Joan, of Bristol, N.H., and Dennis M. Frost and his wife, Vickie, of South Berwick; one daughter, Phyllis A. Turner of Franklin, N.H.; a son-in-law, David Constine of South Berwick; one sister, Hope Rousseau of South Berwick; one brother, Robert Parent of Portsmouth, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Chester M. Frost, who died Jan. 24, 1993; a daughter, Lee A. Constine on Jan. 7, 2003; and one brother, Joseph Parent.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Lodges Senior Activity Fund, P.O. Box 355, Springvale, ME 04085.

Arrangements are under the direction McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick.

Helen MacLeod

DOVER - Helen G. (Grass) MacLeod, 94, formerly of Sixth Street, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Riverside Rest Home after a long illness.

Born May 6, 1909, in Hanover, she was the daughter of Christopher and Ethel (Coulter) Grass.

She had lived in Dover since 1947, after moving from Rochester and Berlin. She was employed as a school teacher in Rochester for 24 years until her retirement. She also taught school in Hanover, Lyme, Berlin, and Epping. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness on Ten Rod Road in Rochester, NH Teachers Association, State Teacher Association, BPW of Rochester, Women’s Club, and the NHRTA.

Members of her family include her son in-law, Paul Ruel of Dover; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grand-children; eight nieces and two nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Roderick MacLeod in 1986; and her daughter, Martha (MacLeod) Marcotte in 2002.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, June 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the Cold Spring Cemetery, East Rochester, N.H.

Arrangements are under the direction of R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester, NH 03867.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverside Rest Home, County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Julie Martin

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. - Julie Ann Martin passed away Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Orlando South Seminole Hospital in Longwood, Fla.

She was born in Exeter, N.H., on Feb. 5, 1973, the daughter of the late Wayne Martin, who died in 1983, and Ginny (Hill) Martin of Newmarket, N.H.

As a child, she was an acolyte and sang in the choir at Christ Church in Exeter. She went on to attend Exeter High School where she was color guard captain, played in the school band, and sang in the chorus. She graduated grand marshal of her Class in 1991. She attended Northeastern University in Boston, which she completed in 1996 with a bachelor’s of science degree.

She went on to become head teacher with Great Bay Kids Co., before moving to Florida in 1999 to pursue a career with Hewitt Associates. She resided in Casselberry, Fla., and briefly in Winter Springs, Fla., before passing away at the age of 31.

She is survived by her mother, Geneva "Ginny" Martin of Newmarket; her grandfather, Norman Hill of Newmarket; her uncles, Prescott and Stephen Hill; her aunt, Carole Hill; her cousin, Aura Hill; and her two pets, Murphy and Rory.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2004, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at Christ Church on Pine Street in Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Red Cross, 302 Newmarket Road, Newington, NH 03801.

Patrick McCoole

DOVER - Patrick D. McCoole, 84, formerly of 1 River St., died June 1, 2004, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth

He was born in Dover on Jan. 27, 1920, the son of John and Fannie (Hurle) McCoole and had made his home here all his life.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Dover.

He enjoyed spending time boating and deep-sea fishing.

Members of his family include several nephews, including Raymond C. Dennis and his wife, Ruth, of Dover, and Raymond McCoole and his wife, Barbara, of Chester, and Kenneth Guilfoil of Orlando, Fla.

Several grandnieces and grandnephews also survive him, including Mary Dennis of Dover and Raymond J.P. Dennis and his wife, Jennifer, also of Dover. Several great-grandnieces, including Katelynn, Lauren and Emily, all of Dover, also survive him.

Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, June 4 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 131 Central Ave., Dover.

Burial will be in the family lot in St. Mary New Cemetery, Dover, N.H.

Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Ethel Miller

SANBORNVILLE - Ethel Dorothy Miller, 80, formerly of Sheila Lane in Sanbornville, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at SunBridge Care of Rochester, where she resided the past three years.

Born July 5, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Finch) Miller. She had resided in Sanbornville since 1982, having come from Westbury, Long Island, N.Y.

Retired from Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, Long Island, N.Y., she enjoyed doing crafts. She was a member of the Wakefield-Brookfield Senior Citizens and the Northrop-Grumman Retiree’s Club, Northeast North Chapter.

Survivors include a brother, Arthur Miller of Holiday, Fla.; a niece, Peg and husband, Richard White, of Sanbornville; and a nephew, Arthur Miller of Middletown, N.Y. She was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret "Margie" Buchman and Anna Coster.

Calling hours are Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St., Farmington, N.H. A private graveside service will be held on Friday at Lovell Lake Cemetery in Sanbornville.

Henri Pilotte

FARMINGTON - Henri J. Pilotte, 83, formerly of Hooksett, died May 31, 2004, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Farmington after a brief illness.

He was born in Manchester on Feb. 20, 1921, the son of Oscar and Claudia (Vaillancourt) Pilotte and had been a resident of Manchester and Hooksett most of his life.

He was a graduate of Mont Sacre Coeur in Granby, PQ Canada.

He was an artist and well known for his portrait work. He was a parishioner of St. George Church and enjoyed using his talents in decorating the church.

Members of his family include his wife of 54 years, Alice (Mauviel) Pilotte of Farmington; one son, Maurice L. Pilotte of Farmington; one brother, Richard A. Pilotte of Manchester; six sisters, Lucille Gagne, Irma Boucher, Blanche LaBrie, Rita Bernier, Yvette Searles, all of Manchester and Pauline Eafrati of Raymond; and several nieces and nephews.

In his life, he enjoyed the company of his daughter-in-law, Jacquelyn and his five grandchildren, Maurice W. Pilotte, Julie A. Edahl, Bradley N. Poisson, Jennifer Scott and Thomas A. Scott.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the J.N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home, 110 Bridge St., Manchester.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Cathedral, Manchester. Entombment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, Manchester.

Mark Platenik

LEE - Mark D. Platenik, 53, of Tuttle Road, died June 1, 2004, at his home in Lee.

Born July 17, 1950, in West Springfield, Mass., he was the son of Patricia (Cizek) Platenik of Barnard, Vt., and the late Joseph J. Platenik. He was raised in West Springfield and had resided in Lee for the past 24 years.

He was a 1968 graduate of Brockton High School, and he attended the University of Massachusetts.

He was a creative designer and builder of homes. He customized each house he built, including his own.

He was a loving and generous person, and his family was very important to him. He was an outdoors person who enjoyed gardening and raising animals. He also enjoyed riding his Harley.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Roberta (Razney) Platenik of Lee; his son, Jacob and Alison Locke of Epping; his son, Matthew and Brandy Prentiss of Rochester; two granddaughters, Anastasia of Epping and Marcia of Rochester; two brothers, Joseph of Brockton, Mass., and Keith of North Hampton; three sisters, Donna Price of Indian Head, Md., Patricia Read of South Royalton, Vt., and Kim Furlong of Barnard, Vt.; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces; a grand nephew; and a brother-in-law, John Razney of Lynn, Mass.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, N.H.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, followed by burial in Lee Hill Cemetery, Lee, N.H.

Flowers are acceptable or should friends desire, memorials may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Philip Turcotte

EXETER - Philip A. Turcotte, 90, of 23 Spruce St., died May 30, 2004, at the Hospice House in Concord.

He was born July 8, 1913, the son of Evariste and Mina (Camire) Turcotte. He was a longtime resident of Exeter, where he was well known. He worked for the Exeter Police Department for many years, and after his retirement, worked several years for a local contractor.

He served during World War II as a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He and his wife, Adele, were former summer residents of Bow Lake and Northwood Lake for many years as they loved the beach and going antique shopping.

He was predeceased by his wife, Adele M. (Puchlopek) Turcotte, who died Dec. 31, 1998; three brothers, Donald, Arthur, and Alfred Turcotte; and two sisters, Ida Lavoie and Rose Rolfe.

He is survived by one sister, Jeanette Brewitt of Epping; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Turcotte and Marion Turcotte, both of Exeter; and nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, Exeter.

Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Douglas Brown Jr.
ROCHESTER - Douglas L. Brown Jr., 25, of 171 Chestnut Hill Road, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, from injuries sustained in a snowmobile accident, which occurred in New Durham earlier in the day.

He was born in Exeter on July 22, 1977, the son of Douglas L. Brown of Brownfield, Maine, and Beverly J. (Munroe) Brown.

Raised in Seabrook, he attended Seabrook schools and Winnacunnet High School.

He worked for over two years for Lydall Paper Company in Rochester and for the previous five years as a mechanic for Pat’s Getty in Seabrook.

He was a member of the American Motorcross Association.

He was predeceased in 2001 by his mother, Beverly J. (Munroe) Brown; and a brother in 1992, Mark Brown

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Tammy (Ross) Brown of Rochester, a son they are expecting, Travis D. Brown, and a daughter, Felisha Lee Brown, all of Rochester; three sisters, Rhonda Brown of Exeter, Whonda Wolterbeek of Hampton and Catherine Brown of Epping; a nephew, Taylor Brown; and his best friend, Matt Perkins.

Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. The family requests that flowers please be omitted.
