Earl Carter, former Kingston police and fire chief

KINGSTON - Earl S. Carter, 76, of Main Street, died suddenly at his home on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.

A native and lifelong resident of Kingston, he was born on March 5, 1926, the son of Harry L. and Ida P. (Chellis) Carter.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of the Kingston Vets Club and the VFW Post 1088 in Kingston.

For 44 years, he delivered oil for W.S. Clark & Sons in Kingston and was formerly a road agent in the town of Kingston.

He was an active member of the Kingston Fire Department since 1945, having served as truck engineer, deputy forest fire warden, assistant chief and fire chief. He was also a member of the Kingston Police Department for many years having served as police chief from 1963 to 1967.

He was a member of the Rockingham County Law Enforcement Association and served the county as a special deputy sheriff. He was also formerly a member of the N.H. State Marine Patrol.

Mr. Carter had a special interest in trains, a love of animals and wildlife, and greatly enjoyed working his farm in East Kingston. He also
liked attending auctions and collecting antiques.

He is survived by three sisters, Winnifred Wentworth of Stratham, Doris Light and her husband, Robert of Exeter, and Bertha Bruce and her husband, Don of Stratham; his brother, Walter G. Carter Sr. of Kingston; his close friend and companion, Carol Tewksbury of Kingston; many nieces
and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Kingston First Congregational Church, 6 Church St., Kingston. Burial with military honors will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Kingston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 302, Kingston, NH 03848.

Howard Eden

DURHAM - Howard P. Eden, 85, formerly of Dame Road, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at SunBridge of Portsmouth.

Born on July 14, 1917, in Watertown, Mass., he was the son of George and Gertrude Louise Eden.

He had resided in Waltham, Mass., and Hampton Beach.

He was predeceased in 1992 by his wife, Pearl (Clive) Eden.

He is the father of Kenneth; stepfather of Wayne Greenough and his wife, Lorretta of Hampstead, N.C., and Clive Greenough and his wife,
Dorothy of Milldale, Conn. He leaves a brother-in-law, Edward Bright of Waltham, Mass.; a niece, Trudy Tuttle of Everett; several nephews; his dear friends and companions, Shirley and Ray Leach of York Harbor,
Maine.

He was employed by Waltham Brass, Davidson Fan and the Milliken Co.

He was a twice-decorated soldier of the U.S. Army and received the Bronze Star serving in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.

He was a member of the 182 Y.D. and the Americal Division. He was a member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. American Legion services will be held during the visitation. A funeral service will follow at 5 p.m. with the Rev. David Wuori officiating. Following cremation, burial will take place at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

Leon Hall

NEW DURHAM - Leon Hall, 78, of New Durham, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003. He was the husband of Ethel for over 52 years.

He was born on Nov. 17, 1924, the son of Ethel Hall.

He was a machinist for over 40 years. He retired from General Electric in 1985. He was also the owner and operator of a salvage yard for many years.

He enjoyed music and going to Florida for the past 17 years.

Mr. Hall was full of life. He will be greatly missed by all. May his memory live.

He is survived by his sons, Roger M. Hall of Sanford, Maine, Robert M. "Tip" Hall and his friend, Joan of New Durham, Ron Hall of Florida and New Hampshire, and Roy and Lee Hall of Wolfeboro; a daughter, Roxanne Hall of Winter Haven, Fla.; four grandchildren, Amanda, Nickolas, Kevin and Jessica; two sisters-in law, Ellie Hall of Dover and Mary Allen of Rochester; brother-in-law, Earle Merrill of Middleton; 15 nieces and nephews; and his two faithful dogs, Peanut and Socks.

He was predeceased by a son, Roy Hall I; a sister, Virginia Begley; and brothers, Merrill and Alfred Hall.

Priscilla Lord

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Priscilla J. Lord, 81, of Lebanon Road, passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in H.D. Goodall Hospital, after a brief illness.

She was born in North Berwick on Jan. 25, 1922, a daughter of Samuel and Jessie (Brooks) Stillings.

She graduated from North Berwick High School and remained a lifetime resident of the town.

Mrs. Lord enjoyed the outdoors and her home. Before her husband, Herbert Lord, passed away in 1981, they enjoyed traveling to Alaska.

In addition to her husband of 39 years, she was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Michelle Hatch; two sisters, Jennie Hale and Dorothy
Abbott; and a brother, Forrest Stillings.

She is survived by three daughters, Judith Dionne and her husband, Dennis of Berwick, Pamela Clement and her husband, Dale of North Berwick, and Melissa Lord and her companion, Scott DeMoss of Sanford; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey Hatch, Julie Anne Alferez, Derek, Justin and
Ashleigh Dionne, Tony Clement, Danielle Nolasco and Autumn Simpson; six great-grandchildren, Arielle and Mariquia Alferez, Nicholas Clement, Brianna Simpson, Adian and Ciara Hatch; two sisters, Eleanor Downs of
Sanford and Shirley Lord of Rollinsford; and sister-in-law, June Stillings of North Berwick.

Visiting hours are private. A graveside service will be held in the spring in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, North Berwick.

Friends who wish may contribute to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.

John Mirasola

PORTSMOUTH - John J. Mirasola, 78, of 176 Sherburne Road, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a long period of failing health.

Born in Portsmouth on Sept. 17, 1924, he was the son of Joseph and Rose (Noble) Mirasola.

He attended Portsmouth schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He worked for some time at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and then worked at National Gypsum, where he retired after 38 years.

He was a member of St. James Church and the Sons of Italy. He loved to putter in his shop and was an excellent woodworker who could fix anything.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary (Segee) Mirasola; four daughters, Rose C. Field of Portsmouth, Ann Marconi and Diane M. Halsey, both of Rochester, and Catherine Tremblay of Portsmouth; one son, John J. Mirasola Jr. of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, A.J. Mirasola of Connecticut; a sister, Mary Lokken of Portsmouth; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew Marconi; a brother, Raymond Mirasola; and a sister, Theresa Denman.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church on Friday at 10 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, are Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Erma Morrison

ROCHESTER - Erma R. (Emerson) Morrison, 73, of Little Falls Bridge Road, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 2, 2003, at home.

Born Nov. 14, 1929, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Russell and Mayella (Weeks) Emerson Sr.

She had resided in Farmington and Alton for many years.

A former shoe worker, she had been employed at the Alton Shoe Co., formerly of Farmington.

She was a member of the Nute Ridge Bible Chapel of West Milton. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting and music. She especially loved her family, caring for them and was very fond of her sons-in-law.

She is survived by four daughters, Linda M. Johnson of Errol, Nancy R. Goodwin of Middleton, Ann Lane of Rochester and Mary L. Cook of Milton; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Peg Emerson of Alton; two brothers, Russell Emerson Jr. of Alton and Frank Emerson of Colorado; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Paul A. LaPanne Jr.

A private service will be held at C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St., Farmington.

Edwin Sanderson

MIDDLETON - Edwin L. Sanderson, 62, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, Rochester, after a six month battle with cancer.

He was born on Jan. 12, 1941, in Quechee, Vt., where he grew up and attended school.

He was a resident of Holbrook, Mass., for 28 years before moving to Middleton over two years ago.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a maintenance technician for Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro for over two years. For several years, he worked in maintenance for the Holbrook School Department.

He was a former member of the Holbrook Veterans of Foreign Wars and a choir member, Sunday school teacher and a deacon at the Winthrop Congregational Church in Holbrook.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth H. (Cameron) Sanderson; daughters, Linda M. Nicholson of Hanson, Mass., Susan E. Roche of Abington, Mass., and Kristen E. Sanderson of Norwood, Mass.; his grandchildren, Violet and James Nicholson.

Funeral services will be held in the Hurley Funeral Home, 127 South Franklin St., Route 37, Holbrook, Mass., on Thursday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Frisbie Memorial Hospital, c/o Auxiliary, 11 Whitehall Road, Rochester, NH 03867.

John Smart

DOVER - John Harold Smart, 77, formerly of 12 Lincoln St., died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, after a period of failing health.

Born on Oct. 7, 1925, in Dover, he was the son of John and Dorothy (McAvoy) Smart.

He was in the National Guard from 1946 to 1948.

He was a member of American Legion No. 8 and a member of Quarter Century Club at Heidelberg.

He loved York Beach and Nubble Light in Maine.

He was employed as a machinist helper with Kidder Press and Harris Graphics, retiring in 1987 after 43 years of service.

He is survived by his stepmother, Marion Smart; a son, Paul D. Smart of Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Dorma Marie New of Stokenchurch, England; a brother, Arthur Smart of Rochester; two sisters, Barbara King of Dorchester, Mass., and Shirley Parker of Vermont; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., with the Rev. David Slater, pastor, First Parish Church, Congregational, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Ada Badger
DOVER - Ada Jane (Janes) Badger, 62, of Waldron Towers, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 20, 1941, in Dover, the daughter of former Deputy Police Chief Dewey W. Allen and Marjorie (Larochelle) Allen.

She graduated from Dover High School and had resided in Dover all of her life.

She was a former employee of Eastern Air Devices, Davidson Rubber Company and New England Telephone Company.

She was a longtime member of the Post 8 American Legion Auxiliary of Dover, where she was the current president and also a past president.

Having survived a liver transplant in September 1997, she thoroughly enjoyed the last five years of her life. She especially enjoyed crocheting, knitting and mostly spending time with her grandchildren. They affectionately knew her as "Nanny."

A beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, she is survived by a daughter, Kim Moreau of Kittery, Maine; two sons, Stephen Janes of Timonium, Md., and Mark Janes of Dover; six grandchildren, Alex Janes and Gregory Janes, both of Timonium, Mark Baud and Adam Janes, both of Dover, and Morgan Moreau and Tristan Jane Moreau; three brothers, Raymond Allen of Somersworth, Eugene W. Allen of Manchester and Donald R. Allen of Dover; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Dorothy Kelly and Marjorie A. Gordon; her brother, Dewey W. Allen Jr.; and her longtime love, George Twidle.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Tasker Funeral Home with the Rev. Deacon Ginny Slawnwhite officiating.

Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. Flowers are acceptable.

The family suggests consideration of becoming an organ donor.

Fred Currier

KITTERY, Maine - Fred M. Currier, 86, husband of Annie L. (Waldron) Currier, of Kittery, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 24, 1916, the son of Wilfred and Annie (Locke) Currier.

He attended Rye, N.H., schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1934.

He served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer during World War II.

Mr. Currier was formerly employed for Ricci Construction and Brown
Construction and had also worked for Harry Carter in North Hampton, N.H. He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1979 after 18 years of service.

He had attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

He was a member and past master for over 40 years of St. John’s Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth; member and past high priest of Washington Chapter No. 3; member and past thrice illustrious master of Davenport Council No. 5; member of DeWitt Clinton Commandery of Portsmouth; and member of Bektash Shrine of Concord, N.H.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Lucille Drown of Mesquite, Nev., Priscilla Osgood of Waterboro, Patricia Lavin of Virginia Beach, Va., William Currier of Somersworth, N.H., and Robert Currier of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Ellen Jackson of Halls, Tenn.; stepson, Edward Goodwin of Kittery; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; cousins; two nephews; and one niece.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Edith (Ryan) Currier; a son, John Currier; a brother, Edward Currier; and a sister, Edna Borkhardt.

A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Friends invited.

Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. with Masonic services by St. John’s Lodge No. 1 F&AM at 5:45 p.m. Family flowers only.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
