Betty Stowell
ROCHESTER - On June 6, 2004, with her beloved husband and family surrounding her, Betty Stowell walked into the "Garden of Light" with her savior, Jesus Christ.
She was born Jan. 1, 1939, in Concord, N.H., to William and Arlene (O’Day) Gallagher. She was raised by her mother, Arlene Hanson (O’Day) and stepfather, Ralph Hanson. She was a graduate of Spaulding High School and a life-long resident of Rochester.
Her passion was being a child advocate, spending many of her years as a social worker for Strafford County. She was awarded Rochester’s Woman of the Year in 1985 for her work in helping troubled families and founded several child advocacy groups.
She is survived by her husband, Donald I. Stowell Sr. of Rochester; two sons, Donald I. Stowell Jr. and wife, Jane, of Strafford and Craig D. Hanson of Berwick, Maine; two daughters, Debra S. O’Bryan (Stowell) and husband, Mark, of Boston, and Darleen A. Stowell of Rochester; two brothers, Daniel Gallagher and his wife, Myrna, of Rochester and Edward Hanson and his wife, Janice, of Saco, Maine; one sister, Eileen Douglass and her husband, John, of Rochester; three grandsons; five granddaughters; one sister-in-law, Teresa Davidson and husband, John; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and a very dear friend, Trudy Fischer of Berlin, Germany.
She spent the last 20 years of her life driven by her passion as a child advocate. She had a need to help children and had a special gift that allowed her to bring comfort and joy to any child that needed emotional or material support. Working through the Strafford County agency, she shared this with hundreds of families.
For 18 months she fought a courageous and silent battle with pancreatic cancer. Courage was her strength, faith and love. Silent were her complaints, self-pity and fear. She touched thousands of lives and saved countless more. Her passion was "families in crisis." She is irreplaceable in that capacity, for no one has the strength, wit, strictness, kindness, compassion, honesty or love for children and their families as she did. Her word was her bond. Those who have been touched by her are all the better for it. She gave all of herself while pursuing or taking on the ultimate challenges that laid before her. She never denied anyone a voice of help and compassion. Even on birthdays, vacations or Christmas Day, she always took the call. We know all these things because she wasn’t just the No. 1 social worker and "Woman of the Year" recipient, she was also a beloved friend to anyone fortunate enough to know her. The void we feel in losing a devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother are filled with her inspirational words, of faith and comfort, "Let Go and Let God."
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, June 10, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo’s Church in Gonic with Father Paul Montminy officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary in Gonic, N.H., with a reception immediately following at the Holy Rosary Parish, North Main Street, Rochester.
