Robert Jackson Jr.
PORTSMOUTH - Retired CM1 Robert L. Jackson Jr., USN, 77, of 80 Haven Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
He was born in Groton, Conn., on Oct. 14, 1923, the son of Robert L. Sr. and Alice R. (Call) Jackson.
Mr. Jackson was a graduate of Portsmouth High School Class of 1941. He enlisted into the United States Army during World War II and eventually enlisted into the United States Navy serving in the Seabees. He also served in the European Command Headquarters, Frankfurt, Germany and Paris. The Taiwan Defense Command in Taipei, Taiwan and also in Vietnam, retiring in 1974. Over the years he had been employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired from the United States Postal Service in 1982 with a total of 37 years of service to the United States Government.
He was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; member of Emerson Hovey Post 168 VFW in Portsmouth; Fleet Reserve Association and the China-Burma-India Veterans Association; and the Navy League.
Survivors include two nieces, Beverly Salzmann of Hinterbruehl, Austria and Marsha Ogden of Silver Springs, Md.; a grandniece and four grandnephews; and several cousins.
A sister, Carolyn F. Payne, predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held at the North Congregational Church Chapel, 355 Spinney Rd, Portsmouth, Saturday 11 a.m. Friends invited.
Visiting hours will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Friday 6 to 8 p.m. Friends who desire may make memorial donations in his memory to the Memorial Fund of the North Congregational Church, 355 Spinney Rd., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Joanne Moriarty
ELIOT, Maine - Joanne Foley Moriarty, 59, of 116 Goodwin Road died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at her home following a 14-year ordeal with cancer, a burden she carried with determination and dignity.
She was born July 15, 1941, in Newton, Mass., the daughter of Gerald A. and Winifred Poynton Foley. She attended Newton Public Schools, graduating from Newton High School in 1957.
She was married in July 1962, to her husband of nearly 40 years, Edward P. Moriarty, and lived in Connecticut, Pakistan, Singapore, and New York before settling in Maine in 1973.
She earned a bachelor of arts degree with honors in Sociology from Hofstra University in 1973, and completed her Masters Degree, with honors, in Clinical Social Work at Boston College in 1987. She was subsequently elected to the Jesuit Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu.
Form 1987 to 1997, she served as director of Professional Services for Saint Andre Home of Biddeford, Maine, and during the last years of her life she was involved in family counseling through the State of Maine Department of Human Services.
She was also involved in the design and enactment of both community and school based programs intended to promote wholesome family living, and the safety and emotional well being of children.
Mrs. Moriarty served as a member of the Habitat for Humanity, York County Board of Directors, working to provide affordable housing for families with limited income in the area, in addition to traveling to Guatamala, Belfast, Northern Ireland, to participate in home building projects in those distressed countries.
She is survived by her husband, Edward; three sons, Mark of Eliot, Myles of Rollinsford, N.H., Kevin of Brookline, Mass.; a brother, William and his wife, MaryAnn Foley of Wellsley, Mass., and her two beloved grandchildren, Anthony and Jannell Moriarty.
Home was her dearest love, humanity her cherished cause.
A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6 from the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.
Friends and family are invited to call at her home at 116 Goodwin Road Eliot Maine on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Evening visitors may park at The East Eliot Grange across the street).

Donna Roberts
LIMERICK, Maine - Donna G. Roberts, 53, of Range Road died suddenly early Wednesday morning January 3, 2001 at the Goodall hospital in Sanford.
Ms. Roberts was born April 18, 1947, in Gorham. She was the daughter of Donald E. Graves Sr. who died on November 30, 1999, and Dolly (Conant) Graves who resides in Waterboro.
She attended schools in Westbrook and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1965. Following graduation she continued her education and was licensed as a nurse. She worked for several years at the Baron Center in Portland.
Family and friends will remember her as a caring, kind, compassionate and patient person. She was a devoted Christian and loved her family and church above all things. As a member of the River of Life Christian Fellowship she served as deaconess and was said by her pastor to be " a wonderful woman of prayer", often sharing words of encouragement to others like her youngest son Kevin who was " as close as her heart".
Ms. Roberts also enjoyed going to craft fairs, shopping and a nice dinner out despite her amazing cooking ability. She collected dolls and angels as well.
Surviving is her mother Dolly Graves of Waterboro; three sons, Scott Roberts of S. Waterboro, James Roberts of Lebanon, Kevin LaRose of Newfield; a daughter Heidi Pendleton of Islesboro; three brothers, Donald Graves Jr. of Gray, Douglas Graves of Waterboro, Dana Graves of Waterboro; two sisters, Dianne Blackburn of Waterboro and Denise Lagueux of Maryland. Also surviving are six grandchildren, her very special friend and companion Raymond Sawyer of Limerick, and several nieces, nephews cousins and in-laws.
A period of visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, where services will be held on Friday Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Raymond Noyes officiating.

Vera Rowe
NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Vera E. Rowe, 91, of New Dam Road, Sanford, formerly of Market St., North Berwick, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in H. D. Goodall Hospital, Sanford.
She was born May 31, 1909, in Parsonsfield, the daughter of John and Ethel (Doe) Leavitt. She was a graduate of Parsonsfield Seminary and the Rhode Island School of Fine Arts.
Vera had worked as a designer of wall covering in New York City. In 1939 she married Dana A. Rowe.
Mrs. Rowe was a member of the First Congregational Church in North Berwick as well as the Plus Ultra Women’s Fellowship in North Berwick and a lifetime member of the Fern Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Alfred.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1975. Surviving are a son, Dana A. Rowe; two daughters, Sandra D. Duranceau of Sanford and Gretchen G. Endicott of Rockville, Ind.; one sister, Hazel Bathurst of Tyrone, Pa.; three grandsons, Theodore Shufelt, Nelson Duranceau and Darren Duranceau; two granddaughters, Devon Shufelt and Doreen Dube; and nine great- grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, High Street, North Berwick with the Rev. Gerald Scribner officiating. Spring interment in Highland Cemetery, Limerick.

Erma Thoroughgood
ALTON - Erma E. Thoroughgood, 93, a longtime resident of Alton, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
Born Oct. 5, 1907, in Presque Isle, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Dorothea (Carter) Witham.
She had resided in Alton for over 70 years, most recently she had resided at the Belknap County Nursing Home in Laconia.
A shoeworker, she had worked at the former H.O. Rondeau Shoe Co. in Farmington. She had also worked as a housekeeper at St. Peter’s Church in Farmington with Fr. Shalifour and also while he was in Manchester.
The widow of G. Wesley Thoroughgood, Jr., she is survived by her daughter, Patricia Drew of Alton; two sons, George W. Thoroughgood of Alton and Robert E. Thoroughgood of Laconia; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; also several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Ralph Thoroughgood and a daughter, Barbara Thoroughgood and also by five sisters.

The Funeral service will be held on Saturday Jan. 5 at Peaslee’s Alton Funeral Home, School Street in Alton at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Peter Bolster officiating.
A calling hour is prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
Interment will be in the spring at the Old Riverside Cemetery in Alton.
Adeline Aquilino, history instructor at Phillips Exeter Academy
EXETER - Adeline V. Aquilino, 49, an instructor in history at Phillips Exeter Academy since 1991, died on Monday, June 11, 2001, at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.
Aquilino once wrote that "A passionate desire for quality education is one of the distinguishing traits of a successful educator. If quality is demanded from students, then quality must be in evidence in the teacher." Aquilino brought considerable quality and passion to the classrooms of PEA, where her commitment to her students, to scholarship and to critical-thinking were widely recognized among students and faculty.
Aquilino served as an instructor in and head of the Junior Studies Program, an interdisciplinary course that introduces first-year students to the academy. In this capacity, as well as in her history courses, she worked with many academy students. She also served as a residential adviser in academy dorms.
In addition to her classroom duties at PEA, Aquilino lived in Hoyt Hall from 1991 to 1993, in Langdell Hall during 1993 and from 1994 to 2000 lived in Merrill Hall. In 2000 she was appointed dorm head in Wheelwright Hall.
One of her lasting contributions to the academy was as chair of the Martin Luther King Day Committee from 1996 to 1999. Overseeing an on-campus day of workshops, lectures and performances, she added greatly to this community’s appreciation of diversity. In 1999, she was awarded the Rupert Radford ‘56 Faculty Fellowship award for "distinguished and faithful service" to the academy.
Prior to joining the PEA faculty, Aquilino taught a wide range of history courses in public high schools in Annapolis, Md., Hudson, Ohio, and Framingham, Mass.
A graduate of Marist College, Aquilino also held two master’s degrees, a master of science degree from Johns Hopkins University and a master of arts degree from Kent State University.
She is survived by her husband, John Wharton; three stepchildren, David, Tom and Josh Wharton; and four siblings, Roe diBiasi, Mary Aquilino, Butch Aquilino and Anthony Aquilino, all of New York City.

Ann Davis
DOVER - Ann V. Davis, 85, of Henry Law Avenue, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, following a period of failing health.
She was born in Dover July 2, 1915, the daughter of John F. and Mary-Ellen (Steenson) Sullivan. Her parents were born in Ireland; her father was born in County Cork, Ireland and her mother was born in Keady, County Armagh, Northern Ireland.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Dover and was very devoted to St. Jude. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and St. Mary’s High School in Dover.
She retired from Clarostat Manufacturing after 34 years and was also employed at Pacific Mills. She had been vice president of Local 242, IUE-CIO.
She was very devoted to her family, especially her great-grandson. In 1993, She traveled to Ireland to meet her family there. While there, she climbed Blarney Castle and kissed the Blarney Stone.
Members of her family include her husband Albert H. Davis, whom she married Sept. 25, 1937; her daughter, Betty Davis of Rochester; a grandson and his wife, Glenn and Tammy MacDonald; great-grandson Ryan Russell MacDonald; many nieces and nephews; and several cousins in Ireland.
She was predeceased by siblings, John F. Sullivan, Daniel J. Sullivan, Donald R. Sullivan, Robert W. Sullivan, George A. Sullivan, Mary T. Quint, Eileen C. McLin and Patricia L. Lessard.
Relatives and friends may call Thursday, June 14, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Avenue, Dover.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, June 15, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Central Avenue, Dover. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. Mary’s New Cemetery, Dover.

Ann Galanes
HAMPTON - Ann Galanes, 51, of 413 High Street died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Exeter Health Care, Exeter, after a period of failing health.
She was born Oct. 8, 1949, in Rochester, the daughter of Chris and Irene (Carrier) Galanes. She was a former resident of Orchard Street in Dover and a graduate of Dover High School, Class of 1968.
She was employed by the New England Telephone Co. for many years and most recently with Telecordia Technologies. She loved the local beaches, enjoyed interior decorating, loved to read, travel and walk her beloved dog, Dollie.
She is survived by her parents of Dover; one son, Scott Hurd of Cape Neddick, Maine; two brothers, John Galanes and wife, Carleen of Hampton and Ernie Galanes and wife, Sandra of California; one sister, Mrs. Marie Cloutier of Rochester; a niece, Melissa Cloutier; a nephew, Bryan Galanes; an aunt, Ann Galanes Jones, and several other aunts, uncles and cousins.

R. Evelyn Gerry
SPRINGVALE, Maine - R. Evelyn Gerry, 81, of Springvale died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.
Mrs. Gerry was born on Jan. 2, 1920, in Springvale. She was the daughter of Almon and Margaret Carson Farwell of Springvale. Mrs. Gerry attended Sanford schools and graduated from Sanford High School. On Sept. 14, 1940, she married her husband of 60 years Arthur M. Gerry.
All her life Mrs. Gerry volunteered her time to help out others. Whether it was her 20 plus years of service to local nursing homes, teaching Sunday school at the Pleasant St. Free Baptist Church, or visiting those who could not leave home; she dedicated herself to helping those in need. She was a member of the Pleasant St. Free Baptist Church, loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Mrs. Gerry enjoyed gardening, crafting, and traveling in her spare time.
Two brothers, Newton and Clyde Farwell predecease her.
Surviving is her husband Arthur of Springvale; a daughter Joyce Iles of Moody; two grandchildren, Susan Benuck of Durham, N.H., Steven Iles of Rochester, N.H. and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Zachary Benuck. Also surviving is a sister, Gertrude Fletcher of Springvale and a brother, Warren Farwell of Sanford.
On Friday June 15, visitation will be held for Mrs. Gerry from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, Springvale; where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale with the Rev. Dennis Reeves officiating.

Tathiana Klinger
CONCORD - Tathiana Klinger, 88, of 151 Langley Parkway, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Concord Hospital.
She was born in Bronx, N.Y., the daughter of Boris and Celia (Kamenetsky) Shapiro.
Mrs. Klinger was an avid reader and accomplished needlepoint artist.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Leo Klinger of Concord, two sons, Charles Klinger of Honeoye Falls, N.Y. and Bernard Klinger of White Plains, N.Y.; one daughter, Ann Turner of Austell, Ga.; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (today) Thursday, June 14, at Temple Beth Jacob, Concord. Burial will follow in Beth Jacob Cemetery, Concord. The family will be available at Granite Ledges, 151 Langley Parkway, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. (tonight) Thursday, June 14.

Sarah Lawrence
HAMPTON - Sarah Margaret "Peg" Lawrence, 86, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a period of failing health.
Born August 24, 1915, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Patrick and Catherine (Devine) Lawrence.
Mrs. Lawrence was a graduate of Central High School and Plymouth State College. She taught school in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for many years.
She served on numerous governing boards in Hampton and was a communicant of Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Parish.
Survivors include a son and his wife, William I. Lawrence III and Joanne (Healey) Lawrence of Dover; two grandchildren, Megan Healey Lawrence of Boston, Mass. and William L. Lawrence IV of Orono, Maine; a sister, Mary Spain of Hampton; nieces, Mary L. Spain and Judy Spain both of Boston, Mass. and Pamela Devine of Manchester and one nephew, Michael Spain of Manchester.
There will be no public service.
