Ralph Gould, 92, former state official
BASS RIVER, Mass. - The Rev. Ralph Vincent Gould, 92, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Windsor Nursing Home in Bass River.
He was born in Walpole on Jan. 20, 1911, the son of George and Emma Gould.
In 1928, he left Walpole High School after his sophomore year to serve three years the Coast Guard.
In 1932, he married Olive Ferguson, who died in 1995.
Rev. Gould built his own fieldstone service station in North Hampton, N.H.
He was elected constable in 1936. In 1937, he went to the FBI National Police Academy in Washington, D.C., at his own expense, and J. Edgar Hoover signed his diploma. He was elected chief of police in North Hampton in 1937.
In 1937, he started a police training school for law enforcement officers in New Hampshire’s Seacoast area. He was a graduate and a faculty member of the New Hampshire Police Officer’s Training School. He spoke frequently on law enforcement.
He was a state trooper from 1938 to 1940 in Troop "E" and lived in Wolfeboro, N.H.
In 1940, Rev. Gould became the assistant police chief in North Conway, N.H. From 1941 to 1942, he was city marshal of Rochester, N.H.
In 1942, he attended Officer Candidate School in The Infantry School of the U.S. Army and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.
In 1943, he entered World War II as a captain with Merrill’s Marauders. He was then assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division as Provost Marshal in Burma, India, and honorably discharged in 1945.
Soon after his return to North Hampton, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves. In 1969, he was recalled to active duty to serve as deputy director for the New Hampshire Selective Service System board during the Vietnam War. He retired as a full colonel in 1974, at age 63.
Gov. Charles Dale appointed Rev. Gould as motor vehicle inspector for the New Hampshire Registry of Motor Vehicles in 1946.
In 1949, Gov. Sherman Adams, appointed him director of safety, where he served until 1960. In 1961, Gov. Wesley Powell appointed him registrar of motor vehicles. He served in this position until 1967. He was instrumental in establishing the motor vehicle title to prevent auto theft and helped establish the seat belt and school bus stopping laws.
Rev. Gould embraced Biblical Christianity and joined the First Baptist Church in Concord, N.H. He joined Gideons International in 1952, for which he did much public speaking. He became a licensed lay preacher and was ordained in 1977 at the First Baptist Church in Hampton, N.H., by the American Baptist Convention. He served as pastor of Wilmot Baptist Church in Wilmot Flat, N.H., during the 1960s, and Grace Bible Church in East Kingston, N.H., during the 1970s.
He loved to build and did extensive renovation to his homes in Pembroke and on Boars Head, Hampton.
Family members include his wife of eight years, Barbara (Reynolds) Gould of Bass River; a son, Wayne Gould of Rye, N.H.; a daughter, Sandra Zaccardi of West Wareham; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Gould of Pembroke; and two sisters, Barbara Fillmore of Melbourne, Fla., and Virginia Divine of Foxboro.
Patricia Jillette
ROCHESTER - Patricia H. Jillette, 69, of 5 Monadnock Drive, and the wife of Lawrence F. Jillette Jr., died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Darlene Lucier
ALTON - Darlene M. Lucier, 38, of Sanctuary Lane, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at her home, after a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born on July 10, 1964, in Brattleboro, Vt., the daughter of Donald and Kathryn Lucier.
She was a lifetime resident of New Hampshire. The Lakes Region was her home for more than eight years.
She graduated from Keene High School, Class of 1982. She earned two associate’s degrees and a bachelor’s degree from Hesser College.
She was employed by U.S. Xpress as the onsite account manager responsible for the Colins and Aikman automotive account.
She loved outdoor sports. Snowmobiling and fishing were two of her greatest passions.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her life partner, Amy Hergenrother; three sisters; one brother; three nephews; one niece; and one great-nephew.
Friends and family are invited to gather at the Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro, for an evening of visitation on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A private funeral service will be celebrated at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Laconia.

LEBANON, Maine - Gregory S. Mercier, 54, of Lebanon, died at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital on Wednesday, April 9, 2003.

Enes Pepi
ROCHESTER - Enes M. (Quintiliani) Pepi, 92, of Rochester, formerly of Quincy, Mass., died Monday, April 7, 2003, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Born in Quincy, she was a graduate of Quincy High School and a resident all her life, before moving to Rochester two years ago.
During the late 1940s and early 1950s, she owned and operated, along with her husband, a local variety store in South Quincy, just down the street from their residence.
She was a member of the Stella Del Nord (Ladies Lodge of the Quincy Sons of Italy) and assisted in voter elections for the city as a ward clerk for many years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sabastian "Sam" Pepi.
She is survived by one son, Paul R. Pepi of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one daughter, Elaine Ambroszewski of Rochester; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday in St. John’s Church, 44 School St., Quincy, Mass., at 9 a.m. Visiting hours are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Bolea-Buonfiglio Funeral Home, 116 Franklin St., Quincy. Burial in Mt. Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.
Vivian Richardson
BRENTWOOD - Mrs. Vivian (Jones) Richardson, 96, of 117 North Road, and formerly of Dover, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin Richardson.
She was born in Birmingham, Ala., on April 9, 1906, the daughter of Dr. Eugene Jones and Mildred E. Jones.
She graduated from Myrtilla Miner Normal School, Dunbar High School and Howard University. She completed many courses at the University of New Hampshire, New York University and many summer courses offered by Elderhostel of Massachusetts.
She taught schools in Maine, New Hampshire and North Carolina, was senior counselor in several senior citizen centers in New York City and
worked many years in federal government services.
Mrs. Richardson was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in
Portsmouth, a member of Community Council of Senior Citizens, the Retired Volunteer Program and was a charter member of the Rockingham Choral Society.
She loved to travel throughout the United States and abroad and enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards and horse races.
She is survived by two godchildren, Karin M. Kendrick of Baltimore, Md., and Ernest A. Kendrick of Houston, Texas; 10 cousins, Harold Ward, B.T. Ward (Ted), Michael Ward, Linda Fox, Harriet Ward, Ann Ward Masterson, Jeremy Ward, Adam Fox, Sara Fox and Brian Ward; and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 105 Chapel St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday, April 15, at 11 a.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours.

Norma Varney
ROCHESTER - Norma S. Varney, 82, of 2 Dartmouth Lane, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at her home.
Born on Feb. 7, 1921, she was the daughter of J. Clarence and Mary Ruth (Darrah) Sicard.
She was raised in Rochester and graduated from Rochester High School, Class of 1938.
She married Richard W. York of Plymouth and there they managed York’s Corner Drug Store and her beauty salon.
She lived in various parts of the country before moving back to Rochester.
In 1987, she married Charles W. Varney Jr., a former president of Grange Mutual Insurance Company.
Mrs. Varney was a past president of the Rochester Women’s Club.
She enjoyed traveling, most recently to Bermuda and Europe, caring for her two adored cats, and entertaining with family and friends. She especially enjoyed visits with her seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two daughters, Normandi York Wells and her husband, Robert Michael Wells of Englewood, Ohio, and Michelle York Hall and her husband, Kenneth C. Hall of Center Sandwich; a brother, Carlton Sicard and his wife, Irene of Rochester; a sister, Dorris Cummings of Yorba Linda, Calif.; nephew, George Pratt and his wife, Carol, formerly of Rochester; two other nephews; four nieces; and two stepdaughters, the former Cynthia Bisbee and Susan Rauth.
Visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, South Main Street.

DURHAM - Dorothy M. Wilcox, 95, formerly of Old Landing Road, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Rochester Manor.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at the family lot in the Durham Cemetery. The Rev. Mary Westfall will officiate.

Richard Baker
ROCHESTER - Richard Paul Baker, 60, of 58B Winter St., died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at his home, after a period of failing health.
Born Aug. 18, 1942, in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Theodore E. and Dorothy G. (Hayes) Baker.
Mr. Baker had lived in Rochester for the past seven years, and previously in Florida and Massachusetts. He also loved to travel.
Members of his family include his brother, Robert Baker and his wife, Sally of Rochester; sister, Dorothy Wilson of Las Vegas, Nev.; his aunt, Edna Penniman of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by an uncle, Charles Penniman.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, with the Rev. A. Wheeler Jr. presiding.
James Conlon Jr.
JAMES F. CONLON JR.
LEE - Retired Air Force Lt. Col. James F. Conlon Jr., 70, of 97 Garrity Road, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2003, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Taunton, Mass., the son of James F. Conlon and Kathleen (Goss) Conlon.
He graduated from Msgr. James Coyle High School, Taunton, and Boston University, where he earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree.
He received his Air Force Commission through the A.F. ROTC at Boston University. He spent 22 years on active duty commanding three munitions maintenance squadrons and serving on two joint military staffs in Taiwan and Germany. He served in Vietnam, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
After retirement from the Air Force, he and his family moved to Lee. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 13 years as a nuclear ship superintendent.
He was active for many years as an official in different youth sports. He enjoyed fishing in the summer and snow skiing in the winter.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Conlon of Lee; two children, Susan T. Conlon of Manchester and Timothy R. Conlon of Beverly, Mass.; two sisters, Joanne Conlon and Kathleen Cyr of Taunton; one brother, Joseph Conlon of Taunton; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road, Route 4, Lee. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at St. Thomas More Parish, 6 Madbury Road, Durham, with the Rev. Robert Biron, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dover Point Road, Dover.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Edith Harte
PORTSMOUTH - Edith M. Harte, 80, of 225 Colonial Dr., passed away at her home on Wednesday, June 4, 2003.
Born in Rochester on Dec. 31, 1922, she was the daughter of Albert and Eleanora (Schmidt) Hert and was a graduate of Spaulding High School.
Mrs. Harte was a member of St. James Church and a former member of the Portsmouth Garden Club and the Junior Women’s Club.
She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and enjoyed gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and line dancing.
She is survived by her four daughters, Mary Harte of New Castle, Joan Harrington of Center Ossipee, Jean Lerch and her husband, Robert of Exeter, and June Palmer and her husband, Glen of Greenland; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Elsie Carter of Rochester.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Harte, in 2000; and a brother, Albert Hert.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. James Church, Route 1, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, on Monday, June 9, at 10 a.m.
Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, are Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.
