Barbara Burns
ROCHESTER - Barbara Wyatt Burns, 86, of 172 Four Rod Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at the Rochester Manor after a period of failing health.

She was born April 4, 1918, in Barrington, the daughter of Ralph and Ellen (Thompson) Wyatt. She had resided in this area 49 years, previously living in Milton. She worked in several of the local shoe factories and also did home demonstrating. She was a member of the Crown Point Grange 65 for 40 years, Naomi Rebeccah Lodge, James Farrington Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, Emblem Club of Rochester and served as past chief of the Pythian Sisters in Milton.

She made over 100 quilts a year for the ABC Quilt, an organization to help babies with aids or drug addictions. She also made many preemie hats for babies who were born prematurely and brought them to Maine Medical Center in Portland. She loved to go to flea markets, craft shows, rodeo camping, and sports events.

The widow of William R. Burns, who died in 1989, she is survived by her daughter, Janet Rothwell of Rochester; son, Richard E. York of Monrovia, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Family and friends may visit tonight, Thursday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H.

The funeral service will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Corbett of First Parish Congregational Church of Center Lebanon, Maine, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Farmington, N.H.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Homemakers of Strafford County, Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, N.H. 03867.

Gertrude Coombs

RYE - Gertrude Marie ("Chris") Coombs, 71, of Rye, N.H., died Sept. 2, 2004.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10, at Rye Bethany Church in Rye. Everyone is invited to attend. If desired, flowers may be sent in her memory to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital patients and wards.

Wilma Dunlap

RYE - Wilma M. Dunlap, 90, of Rye, N.H., died Sept. 14, 2004, in Portsmouth.

She was born in Eliot, Maine, on May 5, 1914, the daughter of William Ray and Lillian (Dixon) Spinney, and attended local schools.

When she was younger, she worked at The Rockingham Hotel in Portsmouth. During World War II, she raised her family in The Atlantic Heights section of Portsmouth.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Portsmouth. She a gifted pianist who received many awards through The Portsmouth Senior Citizens.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl Dunlap; and a daughter, Joyce St. Pierre.

She is survived by sons, Reginald Dunlap of Eliot, Earl Dunlap of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Ramona Ryan of Germany, Jon Thornhill of Dover, Michelle Jenkins of Rochester, Suzanne Dunlap of Annapolis, Md., Jeffrey Dunlap of Durham, N.C.; two great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons and one great-great-granddaughter.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at The J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine.

Billie Johnson

DOVER - Billie Jean Johnson, 50, of Dover, N.H., died on Sept. 7, 2004, in Dover after a period of failing health.

She was born Oct. 5, 1953, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Wilber Sibert and Edna (Mills) Sibert.

She enjoyed reading, listening to music, especially Christian music, and expanding her knowledge. She is survived by her loving mother, Edna Sibert; and four children, Ray Alfred Sibert of Parksville, Tenn., Mustafa Camal Chaudry of Baltimore, Md., Holly E. Spoffard and her husband, James Richard Spoffard Jr., of Dover, and Sandra Renee Reagan of Dover. She was predeceased by her child, Jean Chaudry.

She will be fondly remembered by her close friend, Marla Jean, of Dover, and friend of the family, Pamela Shields of Dover.

Friends may visit with the family at Simplicity Burial & Cremation Services, 34 Lafayette Road, Salisbury, Mass. on Friday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover.

Georgia Mayhew

EXETER - Georgie "Annie" Mayhew, 93, of Langdon Place at 17 Hampton Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Exeter after a brief illness.

Annie, who always hated the name "Georgie", was born on Dec. 5, 1910, in Barnstead, N.H., the daughter of Arthur and Ida Bickford. She and her husband, Eldon Mayhew, moved to Exeter in 1950. They lived at 54 Winter St., until they moved to Langdon Place of Exeter in 1998. They had been happily married for over 60 years when Eldon died in May of 2001.

After raising her children, she worked as a seamstress for a number of years at Exeter Hospital before retiring in 1975.

She was a member of the Exeter Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Throughout her life, she, along with her husband, always tried hard to help other people. Whether visiting the sick, taking an elderly shut-in to the store, or driving people to church, they were always willing to lend a hand and make a difference in someone’s life.

She was known for being a quiet person who loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor. Even during her recent illness, she was able to make jokes and laugh at whatever amused her. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Mayhew) Codding of Nottingham; her son and his wife, Albert and Jean (Gaucher) Mayhew of South Glastonbury, Conn.; her granddaughter, Jennifer Codding of Merrimack; her grandson and his wife, Brian and Joyce (Goodwin) Codding of Nottingham; her two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Russell Codding; and her brother, David Bickford of Gilmanton; her sister-in-law, Shirley Greenwood of Gilford; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Exeter Methodist Church on Epping Road. Arrangements are being managed by the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Annie always said with a chuckle, "I don’t want flowers at my funeral; give them to me now so I can enjoy them". And so, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church, 307 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Angelina Philbrick

CONCORD - Angelina Philbrick, 77, of 240 Pleasant St., died Wednesday at Hospice House of Concord.

Born in Farmington on Feb. 16, 1927, she was the daughter of Everett E. and Rosa Bell (York) Eastman. She grew up in and attended schools in Farmington. She was a former resident of Somersworth and Rochester, prior to coming to Concord.

Prior to her retirement, she was a former shoe worker having worked for several area shoe-manufacturing firms.

She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Horne of Dover; a son, Ralph A. Hayes of Louisiana; a sister, Marion Goodwin of Wakefield, Mass.; her grandchildren, Wayne Tuttle, Harold Tuttle, Paul Girard, Jason and Jared Hayes; her great-grandchildren, Scott Wood and Joshua Quattrone.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Tasker Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Rideout, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Farmington.

As Angelina was a very charitable person, those who wish are invited to make memorials in her name to Easter Seals; Jerry’s Fund for MS or your local veterans organization.

Georgia Posinger

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Georgia R. (Smart) Posinger, 84, of 245 Middle St., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Dec. 10, 1919, the daughter of Morris Harvey and Marion Ruth (Robbins) Smart.

She attended Rye and Portsmouth schools and was a member of the Rye Congregational Church in Rye. She was formerly employed for Blue Bird Bus Company and Community Cab Company for many years in Chicago, Ill. She had also been employed as a heavy equipment operator.

She was an avid motorcycle fan and a member of Frank’s Riders. She also loved to play bingo.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Posinger.

Survivors include two nephews, Wade "Marty" Burnette, Jr. and his wife, Carole, of Cape Coral, Fla., and Brandon B. Burnette and his wife, Elizabeth, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visiting hours.

Howard Richards

PORTSMOUTH - Howard Freeman Richards, Jr., 73, of Portsmouth, died peacefully at his home on Sept. 14, 2004, after a long illness.

He was born in Providence, R.I., on July 15, 1931, the son of Howard F. Richards, Sr. and Ethel L. (Watson) Richards of Eliot, Maine.

He was an energetic, creative and talented carpenter who enjoyed many careers. During his lifetime, he and his wife, Dolores, developed their business, Richards Enterprises, Inc., building over two hundred homes and apartment buildings in the Seacoast area. He built them, she sold them.

Later his love for cooking and fine dining lead to a successful career as the owner/operator of the Ship’s Quarterdeck Restaurant in Kittery, Maine.

After retirement, they moved to the Florida panhandle and opened an antique business. He restored them, she sold them. Together they enjoyed traveling and hunting out flea markets until his failing health brought them home to Portsmouth to be closer to family. He was also well known for his beautiful gardens and love for exotic birds and animals.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores M. (Sharman) Richards. On Sept. 20, they would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. Also surviving is a brother, Ray M. and his wife, Ruth Richards; and a sister-in-law, Madeline Richards, all of Eliot, Maine; three daughters and their husbands, Cynthia I. and Allen H. Gillespie of Rochester, Dyana F. and Ricky W. Ledger of Dover, Rebecca G. and G. Scott Qualls of Epping; three sons and their wives, Daniel F. and Ruth H. Richards of Lebanon, Maine, Dennis F. and Aimee J. Richards of Dover, Christopher L. Richards and Donna Messier of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 16 grandchildren, Richard Gillespie of Somersworth, Eric Richards and his wife, Nicole, Daniel Richards and his wife, Michelle, all of Eliot, Jennifer Nightingale and her husband, Larry, of Berwick, Maine, Kimberly Richards of Eliot, Jesse and Travis Richards of Lebanon, Annie Dube and her husband, Nick, of Acton, Joseph and Jacob Willey, both of Lebanon, Sarah, Jayna and Austin Ledger of Dover, Chelsea Qualls of Epping, Juliette Richards of Dover, and Jason Richards of Fort Walton Beach; six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Anderson of Berwick, Casey and Austin Richards of Eliot, Alexandra and Brianna Richards of Eliot, and Xowie Dube of Acton. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

He enjoyed his large family and was very devoted to his many grandchildren, all of whom will miss him very dearly.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth D. Richards of Eliot.

He was a member of the Kittery Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 40 years.

Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, State Road, Eliot, Maine.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Flora Rouleau

FT. MYERS, Fla. - Flora C. Rouleau, 87, 16900 Slater Road, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Lee Convalescent Center, Ft. Myers, after a period of failing health.

She was born in Somersworth, N.H. on Nov. 17, 1917, and was the daughter of Treffle and Emerilda (Nadeau) Doyon. She was raised in Somersworth, and graduated from St. Martin Academy. She was a factory worker for many years working at area shoe shops including Somersworth Shoe Co.

She had been a resident of Florida for the past seven years coming from Wells, Maine.

Family members include her daughter, Irene Adams, of N. Ft. Myers, Fla. Other family members include her sister, Aldea Filion of Somersworth; her grandson, Gary Adams; and great-granddaughter, Lindsey Adams both, of N. Ft. Myers. Also several nephews and nieces.

Friends and family may call on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South St., Somersworth, N.H. Funeral Services will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Martin Catholic Church, W. High and Maple Streets with the Rev. Aaron Pfaff, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H.

Harry Ableman
DOVER - Harry A. Ableman, 46, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, peacefully at his home with his wife by his side.

Born April 23, 1957, in Rockford, Ill., he was the son of Orville and Hazel Ableman.

He was a veteran in the U.S. Army, Special Forces, and was a Green Beret. He worked for the Portsmouth Post Office and was known there as the "Millennium Mail Handler."

He loved his music and loved to party. He also enjoyed the quiet times with his wife and the company of good friends.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Ableman of Dover; one son, Joshua Ableman and his girlfriend, Cindy; two daughters, Christie and Amanda Ableman. He also leaves behind a special friend, Wendy.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. Visiting hours will be held one hour prior from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 642 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Cora DesRoches

ROCHESTER - Cora A. (Jennings) Norton DesRoches, 97, of South Fuchsia Drive, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Rosalie Katz

RYE - Rosalie (Levinson) Katz, 77, widow of Irving Katz, of 11 Glendale Road, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 5, 1927, the daughter of Moses and Miriam Levinson. She attended Brooklyn College and New Hampshire College.

She and her husband moved to the Portsmouth area in 1954, then to Rye in 1977, where she loved to take walks on the beach. She was an active member of Temple Israel, where she enjoyed taking many courses that were offered.

She was a member of the Sisterhood of the Temple and a life member of Hadassah. She was a volunteer at the Seacoast Mental Health in Portsmouth; a member of the Portsmouth Country Club and the former Wentworth by the Sea; Senior Friends; and Rye Over 55 Club.

During her retirement years, she enjoyed annual trips to Florida and traveling with her husband to his swim meets. She really loved spending time with her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed her weekend shopping trips in the Rye Lions Club van.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon B. Roberts of Kittery, Maine; two sons, Michael E. Katz and his wife, Lauren, of Barrington, and Matthew H. Katz and his wife, Emily, of Queens, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Rachel Katz and Jesse Ann Katz, both of Queens, Julia M. Katz and Paige E. Katz, both of Barrington, Jason L. Roberts of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Aaron D. Roberts and his wife, Stephanie, of Fredericksburg, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Rebekah Roberts of Fredericksburg, Va.; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth, on Friday at 10 a.m. Friends invited.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Israel.
