Rosalie Hildreth Rowan
KITTERY, Maine - Rosalie Hildreth Rowan of Wilson Road succumbed to cancer on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Harbor Home Nursing Home, York Harbor, Maine. She was born June 16, 1924, to the late Sadie (LeVene) and Elmer Linwood Merrill in Biddeford, Maine.
"Boarded out" at the age of 12 with the Ralph Hanscom family, she attended Portsmouth, N.H., schools until age 16, when she married Hyland Maurice Rowan, a farmer with five hired hands for his new bride to cook and care for. Hy owned the former Woodland Farms Dairy and the Woodland Farms Dairy Bar.
During the 40 years of raising 10 children, Rosalie worked in the Parent-Teacher Association and volunteered to help with school activities. A tireless caregiver by nature, she took in and cared for her sick aunt and later her own mother. When Hy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease almost unheard of at that time, Rosalie earned her certified nurse’s assistant so she could care for him in their home until his death in 1982.
Rosalie put on her mother’s "gadding shoes" in 1983 and flew to Japan, eagerly experiencing their culture and customs during a three-month visit with daughter Nora and her family. Another time she flew to England and volunteered for several months as a domestic helper at the British Headquarters of the Wycliffe Bible Translators. She loved every minute of it.
When home, she fervently took on the tasks of regularly sitting with shut-ins so their families could get a needed break, baby-sat her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will always be remembered for her delicious mashed potato doughnuts and peanut butter fudge.
A born-again Christian and a member of The Church at Spruce Creek (formerly Central Baptist Church of Portsmouth, N.H.), she taught Sunday school, served often in the nursery and worked in Pioneer Girls for many years.
Always willing to help, she is remembered by her church family as a caring sister and a faithful servant.
Her grateful children are: Shirley and Mark Wilson, H. Maurice and Glenna Rowan, Carroll and Mary Jane Rowan, Nancy and John Page, Nora and Kim Gay, Mary and John Osgood, Betty Andre, Robert and Pam Rowan, Herbert and Cathy Rowan, and Susan and Fred Rancourt.
Her siblings are: Lyman (who died in 2001) and Betty Merrill, Natalie and Stan Parmley, Verna and Carl Burbank and Ruth and Ken Zamarchi, plus 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
