Warren Sawyer Jr.
NEWMARKET - Warren D. Sawyer Jr., 66, of New Road, died suddenly on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Exeter Hospital. He recently had bypass heart surgery. He was known to his family and many friends as "Junior."
Born July 11, 1935, in Exeter, he was the only son of Warren D. Sawyer Sr. and Ruth M. (Watson) Sawyer. He was a lifelong resident of Newmarket.
After graduating from Newmarket High School in 1953, he worked for H. Roby Jewell transporting livestock between farms throughout New England. He worked for the town of Newmarket for 20 years in public works and then as an equipment operator for Ernie Currier Construction, where he retired in 1998.
He was the fifth generation to live at the Watson Family homestead that overlooked the mouth of the Lamprey River and Great Bay. He loved nothing more than working the land of his farm and the waters of the bay. For over 50 years, he hayed fields, cut firewood, raised fruit, vegetables and livestock. He started raising sheep at the age of 6 and when he died, he still owned four ewes descended from his family’s original stock. His favorite autumn ritual was to attend the local county fairs. He especially loved to watch the oxen and horse pulling events.
Well-known for his "kitchen bait and tackle shop," he supplied both local fishermen and other bait shops as far north as Berlin. He also assisted many smelt fishermen in getting their bob houses to the channel of the Lamprey and getting them off before the ice went out. He was the local almanac of the tides and smelt runs and all the fishermen looked to him for advice.
The Sawyer Farm was a hub of activity. His huge assortment of friends loved to stop by the kitchen or barn for a visit. He was an honest man who lived simply. All who knew him will surely miss that distinctive voice, his rosy cheeks, friendly smile and his sparkling blue eyes. In celebration of his life, friends and family have established a memorial fund in his name to benefit local youth farming, hunting and fishing programs.
He is survived by his dear companion, Brenda Stevens; and nine first cousins, John E. Sawyer of Davenport, Fla.; Thomas H. Sawyer, Joan A. Curtis and Dorothy Jackson, all of San Antonio, Texas; Robert Sawyer of Trenton, N.J.; Carolyn J. Staniec and Lena Thursby, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; Emily J. Campbell of California and Joan.
