Dorothy Berounsky

PORTSMOUTH - Dorothy Ellen Berounsky, 60, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth on Jan. 1, 1942, she was a daughter of Melvin Norton and Dorothy Stickles. She attended local schools.

A devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was proud of being a South End Puddledocker and enjoyed the city in which she lived and grew up.

An avid outdoors lover, she enjoyed walking and animals, especially her favorite cats, Woody and Jake.

She enjoyed fishing the Piscataqua River, especially when the stripers were running.

She was a hard worker, loved her work at Imperial Cleaners in Portsmouth and the people with whom she worked for so many years.

She is survived by her husband of more than 42 years, Charles D. Berounsky Sr. of Portsmouth; her daughters, Roxanne Wheeler of South Berwick, Maine, and Linda Rooks of Dover; her sons, Charles Berounsky of Portsmouth, Wayne Berounsky of North Berwick, Maine, Brian Berounsky of Eliot, Maine, and Scott Berounsky of Concord; a sister, Louise Beckert of Portsmouth; and many grandchildren.

A time of sharing and remembrance will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only.

Arrangements are by the Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.

Elta Brown

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Elta Marion (Burgess) Brown, 86, a resident of Huntington Common, formally of Ocean Park, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at the Southern Maine Medical Center.

Mrs. Brown was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Malden, Mass., a daughter of Ernest O. and Katherine (Marigold) Burgess and graduated from Lowell High School, Class of 1933.

She was a member of the Biddeford-Saco Unitarian Universalist Church and sang in the church choir.

She was active with the Salvation Army, the Saco Historical Society and the Burlington, Mass., Historical Society. She enjoyed painting, sewing, braiding rugs, swimming and was an accomplished pianist.

She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Walker Brown in 1982.

She is survived by two sons; Richard Brown of South Berwick, Philip Brown of Castleton, NY; two daughters, Lois Brown of Lincoln, N.H. and Jane Rielly of Ocean Park; two brothers, Philip Burgess and Melvin Burgess both of Florida; and a twin sister, Elsie Ray of Wilmington, Mass.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services are private. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Biddeford-Saco Unitarian Universalist Church, School Street, Saco, ME 04072. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk, ME.

Ethel Dionne

ROCHESTER - Ethel Mary Dionne, 89, formerly of 35 Cochecho River Estates, died Dec. 31, 2001, at St. Ann’s Home in Dover, where she has resided for the past two years.

She was born in Jackman, Maine, on Dec. 27, 1912, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hinds) O’Brien. She was the valedictorian of her class at Jackman High School in 1928.

Mrs. Dionne had worked as a secretary for North Elementary School in Skowhegan, Maine, and as a secretary and bookkeeper for Parker White, a major egg wholesaler in the Skowhegan area.

She had lived in Rochester and New Port Richey, Fla. for over 25 years. She was an avid golfer, and enjoyed dancing and playing bridge. She was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella in Skowhegan, Maine. Her family described her as being a "sweetie".

Her beloved husband, George E. Dionne, died in December 2000. They had been married for over 67 years.

Surviving family members include her close friends and in-laws, Linden and Edith McLaughlin of Hampton; a brother, Forrest O’Brien of Jackman, Maine; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of St. Ann’s Home, 195 Dover Point Road, Dover. The Rev. Tom Coover, chaplain, will officiate. Interment will be in the Maine Veteran's Cemetery. Arrangements are by H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main Street, Rochester, N.H.

Service for Vina Kelley

BARRINGTON - Vina Louena Kelley, 80, of 51 Canaan Road, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home after a period of failing health.

Friends and relatives may call Friday, Jan. 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Purdy Memorial Chapel, Route 4, 2 Concord Road, Lee.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. at the chapel with the Rev. John Newman officiating.

Friends and relatives who wish may make donations in her memory to the Homemakers of Strafford County, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH 03867 or to Seacoast Hospice, 662 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Bernice Montgomery

WILMOT - Bernice C. "Bernie" Montgomery, 60, of Wilmot, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Concord Hospital.

She was born in Arlington, Mass., the daughter of August and Ann (Lee) Welsch.

Mrs. Montgomery was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Concord, where she served with her husband, the Rev. Joe Montgomery Sr., pastor, in various ministries.

She enjoyed crocheting and needlework and spending time with her grandchildren. Her greatest joy in life was leading people to Jesus Christ as her life was spent serving her Lord and others.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Joseph Montgomery Sr. of Wilmot; a son, Joseph Montgomery Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; three daughters, Terry Anne George of Weare, Kelliann Grey of Greenville, Marianne Voisine of Wilmot; a brother, Joseph Welsch of Waltham, Mass.; a sister, Mary Hanson of Villa Park, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church, 80 Clinton St., Concord.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the church with a burial to follow at Milville Cemetery in Concord.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, Christian School Scholarship Fund; or the Jessica Voisine Leukemia Fund, 80 Clinton St., Concord, NH 03301.

The Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord, is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Moses

EXETER - Louise P. Moses, 72, of Fox Chapel Court died Jan. 2, 2002, after a lengthy illness. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Carroll Moulton

EAST LEBANON, Maine - Carroll Hancie Moulton, 83, of 42 West Lebanon Road died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at home after a brief illness.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the R. M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H.

Earl Nickleson

KITTERY, Maine - Earl "Nick" Nickleson of Eliot Road, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home.

Born in Winchester, Va., he was a son of Earl and Lillian (Smith) Nickleson and attended local schools.

Mr. Nickleson served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and for more than 30 years as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard, retiring as a staff sergeant in the lst Battalion 172nd Field Artillery.

He worked for and retired from the Maine Department of Transportation as a bridge operator and later on the highway division.

Known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, he will be missed by his many friends in a number of activities. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 443 in Dover, N.H., the American Legion Post No. 47 in Rollinsford, N.H., and a member of the Good Sam - Coast to Coast Club.

He and his wife enjoyed dancing, travel and camping with their friends. He also enjoyed his time spent on coffee breaks at Hanscom’s Truck Stop in Portsmouth.

He had an ability to fix, paint or build many things. That gift, as well as many others, will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, June (Blake) Nickleson of Kittery; their son, William L. Nickleson of Portsmouth, N.H.; a stepson, Robert H. Donofrio of Kittery; a sister, Nancy S. Simpson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and his brother, Ray Nickleson of Winchester, Va.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.

Friends and family may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Family flowers only.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Portsmouth Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Gordon Robinson

BARRINGTON - Gordon Edwin Robinson, 78, of Rosemary Lane, died peacefully in his sleep at home on Monday, Dec. 31, 2001.

Born May 20, 1923, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Susanna (Large) Robinson and Arthur Winston Robinson of Durham.

A resident of Durham for more than 50 years, he moved to Swains Pond, Barrington, in 1975.

He graduated from Dover High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater and Iwo Jima. He was a dedicated member of his community, serving in many ways.

He was a 30-year veteran of the Durham/UNH Fire Department. He was commander, adjutant and last surviving charter member of the Bourgoin-Reardon American Legion Post of Durham. He was parade marshall of the Memorial Day Parade of 2001. He was an electrician and member of the IBEW Local 490 for more than 50 years.

He was a member of Rising Star Lodge No. 47 F&AM in Newmarket, an honorary past master and tyler for many years. He was also a very active member of Belknap Chapter No. 8, Orphan Council No. 1 and St. Paul Commandry No. 5, all of Dover. He was a gracious host of the annual St. Paul Outing at his home on Swain’s Pond. He was also a member of Bektash Temple in Concord, the Portsmouth Shrine Club and the Scottish Rite Valley of Dover and Portsmouth where he was very active in directing the stage crew.

He loved gardening, carpentry, building stone walls and baseball. He took great pleasure in his family and spending time with them. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many and will be greatly missed and honored.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen (Caldwell) Robinson, who faithfully cared for him until his death; a sister, Flora (Robinson) Shields of Durham; two sons, Bruce Robinson and his wife, Kay of Strafford, and David Robinson and his wife, Eileen of Barrington; two daughters, Cathy Watt and her husband, Robert of Cumberland Center, Maine, and Nancy Parent and her husband, Ed of Farmington; and grandchildren, Matt Robinson, Kevin Robinson, Michael Robinson, Kristine Robinson, Catie Watt and Jeffrey Parent.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Arthur Robinson and William Robinson, both of Durham.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, followed by a 6 p.m. Masonic service at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the chapel of the Community Church of Durham, Main Street, Durham, with the Rev. Mary Westfall officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Durham Cemetery.

Betty Reed

DOVER - Betty L. Reed, 82, of 12 Shady Lane died Tuesday Jan. 1, 2002, at the Riverside Rest Home. Born in Lancaster, Ohio, on Sept. 20, 1919, the daughter of Edward W. and Bessie (Hall) Perry. On Dec. 26, 1943, she married William D. "Bill" Reed and moved to Dover in 1958. In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, William D. Reed Jr. of Wilmington, N.C., and Timothy P. Reed and his wife, Lois, of Dover; four grandchildren, Leigh Reed and Joshua Reed of Wilmington, Andrea Terry of Chicago and Leslie Terry of Acton, Mass.; a sister, Pauline Ward; a brother, Clyde Perry, both of Lancaster, Ohio; and nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Tasker Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Spearing, pastor of the Hope Community Church officiating.

Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. Memorials in her name may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater NH Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Ste. 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Gladys Bradstreet

PORTLAND, Maine - Gladys L. LaGrange Bradstreet, 83, of Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth and formerly of Gartley Street, Lisbon, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Mercy Hospital.

She was born in Methuen, Mass., on July 5, 1918, the daughter of Sennette Jonathan and Dora Louise Christine (Witze) LaGrange. She was educated in Massachusetts schools and graduated from Methuen High School.

On Aug. 14, 1940, she married Alfred Bradstreet who passed away July 18, 1992. In her earlier working years she was first employed at the Worumbo Mill in Lisbon Falls and then spent several years as a school secretary at the junior high in Oxford, Massachusetts. She then spent a number of years as store manager at Baxter Woolen in East Rochester, N.H., and then several years as church secretary at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kennebunk until her retirement.

Among the things she greatly enjoyed were sewing, knitting, bowling, reading, doing crossword puzzles and Sunday family picnics. She is survived by four daughters, Nancy Violette and her husband, Roland, of Lisbon, Sally Soelle and her husband, David, of Lawton, Okla. Wendy Rozene and her husband, Richard, of Cumberland, and Susan Foster of Concord, N.H.; two sons and their wives, Alan and Susan Bradstreet of Pownal and Stephen and Mary Bradstreet of Gorham; nine grandchildren Jeffrey and Gregory Violette, Heidi, Stephanie, and Sarah Rozene, Amanda and Evan Bradstreet and Nicholas and Sally Foster; two sisters, Frances Schwarzenberg and her husband, Russell, of Salem, N.H. and Beatrice Houghton of Methuen, Mass.

Funeral services were held this morning at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Lisbon. Those wishing may make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St. Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101-2406.

Interment will take place in the spring at Hillside Cemetery. Arrangements by Crosman Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Lisbon Falls.

Richard Brown

BOONE, Iowa - Richard H. Brown, 78, of Boone died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he had been a resident for the past year.

He was born in Berwick, Maine, on Sept. 16, 1923, the son of Linward and Louise (Bisson) Brown. He served with the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific. Towards the end of his tour of duty, he attended the USN Electrician's School at Iowa State College in Ames.

On Jan. 15, 1949, he married Mildred Tweedt in Ames. The couple lived in Ames until 1958 when they moved to Boone. From 1947 until 1986, he was employed at Iowa State University where he was foreman for the Physics Graduate Student Shop in the Physics Department. He retired in 1986. He was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 817, the Knights of Columbus Leo Council 814, and the Fourth-Degree Clement Smythe Assembly of the Knights of Columbus all in Boone.

He was a Boy Scout master at Sacred Heart School in Boone for 10 years and he enjoyed bird watching, walking, canoeing, and fishing.

He was predeceased in death by his parents; one son, Steve; two brothers, and two grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of Boone; five sons, Philip and his wife, Pamela, Charles and his wife, Judi, and Mark Brown, all of Boone, David and his wife, Judy of Ames, and Dan Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Gloria and her husband, David Jay, of Boone, and Mary and her husband, Robert Bosch, of Indianola; one brother, Edward Brown of Berwick, Maine; two sisters, Florence Chasse and Betty Bennett and her husband, Tom, all of Somersworth, N.H.; 17 grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

Friends may call Schroeder Memorial Chapel in Boone on Thursday from 12 noon until 9 p.m. where a Vigil service will be at 1 p.m. Visitation continues Friday at the funeral chapel from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

Funeral Mass will be Friday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone, with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. Burial will be in the Bass Point Cemetery. The American Flag will he folded and presented by the Boone Veterans Council.

Dr. Paul Cavanaugh

KEENE - Dr. Paul T. Cavanaugh, 74, of 25 Robbins Road, died at his home on Jan. 2, 2002, after a brief illness. He was born in Dover, on Nov. 7, 1927, the son of Thomas J. and Laura (Therrien) Cavanaugh.

He grew up in Dover and Rochester, and attended St. Mary Academy in Dover. He graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester. He also attended the Tilton School and St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vt. He received his doctorate in ophthalmology from Ohio State University.He had been a resident of Keene for the past 50 years.

He served as a corporal during World War II with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Keene Country Club and was a member and past president of the New Hampshire Optimetric Association, the New England Council of Optometrist, the American Optimetric Society, and former board member of the Board of Registration of Optometry. He was a former member of the Keene Lions Club and was a former Keene city councilor.

Dr. Cavanaugh was a communicant of St. Bernard Parish in Keene. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed skiing and golf.

Family members include his wife of 42 years, Alice T. (Nugent) Cavanaugh of Keene; three daughters, Catherine C. Morris of Keene, Mary A. Durling of Swanzey, and Ann K. Cavanaugh of Chesterfield; two sons, Sean P. Cavanaugh of Keene and Patrick J. Cavanaugh of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; a brother, Richard T. Cavanaugh of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court St., Keene are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main St., Keene, on Saturday at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Home Health Care Hospice, 69 Island St., P.O. Box 564, Keene, NH 03431-0564.

Edmond Daigle Jr.

DOVER - Edmond L. Daigle Jr., 49, of Dover Point Rd. died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at his home.

Born in Dover on Jan. 15, 1953, he was the son of Edmond and Dorothy (Towle) Daigle.

He was self-employed as a carpenter and repairer of musical instruments. He was passionately involved with motorcycles, music and diving. He took great joy in sharing these activities with those he loved. All who knew him will miss him.

Ed is survived by his wife, Ann Shine; one son, Tristan; his mother, Dorothy Daigle; one sister, Susan Smith all of Dover; three brothers, Michael Daigle of Dover, Thomas Daigle of Madbury and David Daigle of Barrington.

Friends may call Friday, Jan. 4, from 5 to p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey--Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the First Parish Congregational Church, 218 Central Ave. in Dover with the Rev. James Pirie officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund for Tristan Daigle, c/o Ann Shine, 419 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820.
