Marion Robie

BRISTOL - Marion H. Robie, 84, of Robie Road, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Lakes Region General Hospital.

She was born in Danville, Vt. the daughter of Charles and Mary (Woodward) Caldwell. She graduated from Marshfield High School, Marshfield, Vt. and shortly after moved to Bristol. She was married to Herbert G. Robie for 59 years, before his death in 1995.

Mrs. Robie worked for many years as a homemaker and farmer’s wife before taking formal employment with Franklin Regional Hospital where she worked as nurses aid for 15 years. She went on to work as a home health aid with the Newfound Area Nursing Association for 15 years. While she officially retired at the age of 75, Mrs. Robie worked summers at the Information Booth for the Newfound Region Chamber of Commerce and volunteered for the Bristol Community Services and the Senior Companion Program. She was known to have played Mrs. Santa Claus for the Santa’s Village at the Tapply Thompson Community Center, and served on the Conservation Committee for the Town of Bristol.

Mrs. Robie was a member of the Bristol Federated Church and was active with the Woman’s Club and served on the Diaconate as well as other committees through the years.

Many have been blessed by Mrs. Robie’s love of baking and sharing these gifts with others.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Gerald, Arthur, Donald and Neil; and a sister, Goldie.

Family members include four daughters, Sylvia A. Carrigan of W. Stewartstown, Hilda L. Bruno, Lucille M. Keegan and Joanne L. Robie all of Bristol; 13 grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph Caldwell of Boscawen, Richard Caldwell of Northfield and Harvey Caldwell of Warner; two sisters, Lois Walker of Bristol and Harriet Braley of Westerly, R.I.; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 25 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main Street, Bristol. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Bristol Federated Church, the Rev. Richard Matthews will officiate. Interment will be in the spring in Homeland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newfound Area Nursing Association, 214 Lake Street, Bristol, N.H., Bristol Community Services, North Main Street, Bristol, N.H. 03222 or to the American Cancer Society, 360 State Route 101, Unit 501 Bedford, N.H. 03110.

Frank Woodman

KITTERY, Maine - Frank H. Woodman, 72, of Remick’s Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Feb. 4, 1929, he was a son of Earl and Pearl (Richards) Woodman. He attended local schools, graduating from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1947.

He and his loving wife of 54 years, Earline (Pease) Woodman, moved to Kittery where they raised their family and have made their home for 42 years.

Mr. Woodman enjoyed working on his property cutting wood, his yearly cut of 14 cords of wood, split and stacked, was mostly enjoyment and little work for him. He also enjoyed planting and caring for the large crop of raspberries that his wife put up every year.

He will be greatly missed by his friends who knew him as both "Pup Woodman" and "Woody the Goody Man," for his many years spent delivering baked goods for Cushman Bakeries and later for the Frito Lay Company.

His sharp wit and great sense of humor will be missed by his friends and his beloved family, who were his first and greatest love.

He is survived by his loving wife of Kittery; his daughter, Winnifred Linney and her husband, Bruce L. of Alfred; his son, Bruce W. Woodman of Kittery; his brothers, Ralph Woodman of Portsmouth, and the Rev. Wesley Woodman of Union; his grandchildren, Laura Rex, Shawn Rex and Kevin Rex; great-grandchildren, Brittney, Jacob, Zakary and Emily.

A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. The Rev. Wesley Woodman will officiate.

Visiting will be private. Family flowers only are requested.

Donations may be made in his memory to the New Hampshire SPCA, 104 Portsmouth Ave., Stratham, NH 03885.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 By-pass, Kittery, ME 03904.

Pauline McKone

DOVER - Pauline McKone, 92, of 234 Central Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at home after a period of failing health.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Bertwell Ham Jr.
RYE - Bertwell M. "Bert" Ham Jr., 70, husband of Bertha M. (Cruz) Ham of 84 Garland Road, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Portsmouth, on April 10, 1931, the son of Bertwell M. Sr. and Emma (Boutilier) Ham. Mr. Ham was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1949, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1949-53.

Mr. Ham was a self-employed floor sander for over 45 years sanding floors all over New England during the day and building homes at night. One of the real delights of his life was during the fall of every year he worked at the Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island refinishing the floors.

Besides his wife Bertha of 47 years, survivors include three daughters, Belinda Mulvey and her husband, James, of Rye, Betsy Bass and her husband, Thomas, of Rye, and Bonny Ham of Rye; four grandsons, Thomas and Benjamin Bass of Rye, and Dan and John Mulvey of Rye; a sister, Barbara Davis of Conway; a brother, Fred Ham of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Priscilla Ham, predeceased him.

A funeral service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Thursday at 10 a.m. Friends invited.

Visiting hours will be held at the Chapel, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Mr. Ham may be made to the Shoals Marine Laboratory, G-14-E Stimson Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, Attn: Mary Benetti.

Richard Jennings

MINNESOTA, Mo. - Richard Jennings, 64, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002.

He was born Sept. 8, 1937, in Lake Hurst, N.J., a son of Bernard William Jennings and Gean Valancius.

He attended Ithaca College in New York and pursued a physical education major.

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.

He was employed at the University of New Hampshire in 1965, working as a lab technician for the electrical engineering department. For a brief period of time, he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, N.H.

He retired in the early 1990s and resided in Sag Harbor, N.Y., in his childhood home. He moved to Minnesota in the spring of 1999.

He married Muriel Kittridge Sandborne in Exeter, N.H., on Jan. 29, 1961.

He is survived by one son, Richard Jennings Jr. of Ridgeland, S.C.; one daughter-in-law, Gretchen Jennings of Ramsey; a grandson, Nicholas; and a granddaughter, Emma.

He was predeceased by one son, Dean Jennings, who passed away this past summer.

Pauline McKone

DOVER - Pauline (Goodwin) McKone, 92, of 234 Central Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home.

Born in South Berwick, Maine, on Dec. 26, 1909, the daughter of Ralph and Katherine (Daley) Goodwin. She has lived here for most of her lifetime and was a graduate of St. Mary High School.

She was a retired employee of the Internal Revenue Service.

Pauline was a long time member of St. Joseph Church and an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Lesniak and her husband, Joseph, of Dover, Ann Maloney and her husband, Robert, of St. Louis Mo., and Sister Felicia McKone, a Sister of Mercy of Windham; a daughter-in-law, Nancy McKone of Alton; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, George; her son John "Jaz" McKone and her grandson, Joseph "Jay" Lesniak.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Sisters of Mercy, 21 Searles Road, Windham, NH 03087.

Meaghan Morneau, Morgan Morneau

BARRINGTON - Meaghan Keeley Morneau and Morgan Keeley Morneau, twin daughters born Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover to Edward and D. Alise (Drapeau) Morneau, died shortly after being born.

In addition to their parents of 18 Baxter Lane, they are survived by their maternal grandparents, Audrey and Henry Drapeau of Rochester; their paternal grandfather, Wilmer Morneau of Somersworth; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, with the Rev. Deacon Ginny Slawnwhite, chaplain at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital officiating.

Friends are invited to call for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit, Maine Medical Center, 22 Bramhall St., Portland, ME 04102.

Mary Swiezynski

EXETER - Mary E. Swiezynski, 81, of 83 Winter St., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home following a brief illness.

She was born in Exeter, June 8, 1920, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Ballentine) Morse.

She attended Robinson Female Seminary until moving to Dorchester, Mass., where she graduated from Dorchester High School. She moved back to Exeter where she married her husband, Benjamin F. Swiezynski Jr., on June 8, 1946, in St. Michael’s Church.

Mrs. Swiezynski worked for the Exeter Hospital for 25 years as a switchboard operator, personnel director and in admissions. Previous to this she worked for the Callahan & Dining Oil Company as a bookkeeper.

She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church, active in St. Michael’s School and former president of the Parents and Friends Program, a member of the Exeter High School Boosters Club for basketball and football. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Benjamin F. Swiezynski Jr. of Exeter; two sons, James M. Swiezynski of Wilmington, Mass., and Benjamin F. Swiezynski III of Exeter; three daughters, Cas Swiezynski of Exeter, Sandra J. Parks of Exeter, and Holly Swiezynski Riopel of Stratham; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Arthur A. Morse.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, Front Street, Exeter.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Family flowers only.

Private burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be made to the Rockingham VNA/Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Sister Irene Beauchemin, Marist missionary, dies
WALTHAM, Mass. - Sister Irene Beauchemin, 92, a Marist missionary sister who grew up in Dover and Exeter, N.H., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Waltham following a period of failing health.

She was born in Farmington, N.H., on Feb. 18, 1909, the daughter of Nelson H. and Mary Jane (Tremblay) Beauchemin.

Sister Irene began a 35-year professional career in the South Pacific as a teaching nun in New Zealand and in the Samoan Islands during World War II.

After earning a nursing degree in 1950, she served as administrator of the Chatham Islands Hospital in the Chatham Islands, a New Zealand protectorate in the South Pacific.

In 1959, Prince Phillip of Great Britain visited Sister Irene at the Chatham Islands Hospital during a Royal tour of the South Pacific region. As a result of the visit, Sister Irene was made an honorary member of the British Empire by Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, in recognition of outstanding work on behalf of the Chatham Islands people.

Following a home visit in 1961, Sister Irene returned to the South Pacific to do nursing in the Chatham Islands, Australia, Fiji and New Caledonia. She returned to her native New England permanently in 1971 where she did nursing for many years at the Marist Hill Nursing Home in Waltham. She had also been active as a healing minister at the Stigmatine Espousal Center in Waltham.

She was predeceased by two brothers, the Rev. Louis H. Beauchemin and Edward E. Beauchemin; and two sisters, Sister Gertrude Beauchemin and Olivine Cullinane Nicklin of Somersworth, N.H.

She is survived by two nephews, John F. Cullinane of Auburn, Maine, and Robert L. Cullinane of Somersworth.

William Ballou

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - William A. Ballou, 87, of Turkey Street, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at the Kennebunk Nursing Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Ware, Mass., Nov. 6, 1914, a son of Alvertus and Cora Belle (Towne) Ballou. When his father died in 1930, he left high school to run the family farm.

He moved to Strafford, N.H., and married Melba Parshley in 1946. They moved to North Berwick in 1949 where shortly after they established and operated a poultry farm for over 40 years. For 20 of those years, he also worked six days a week at Chadbourne Poultry Farm in Sanford. Mr. Ballou also enjoyed gardening and working in the woods, harvesting his own firewood.

Mr. Ballou was a member of the Maine Poultry Federation and the Maine Farm Bureau.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Berwick and served on the board of trustees for several years.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1993, two sisters, two stepsisters, a brother, and granddaughter, Lorin Cooper, in 1999.

He is survived by two sons, Edmond and his wife, Faith of North Berwick, and Nelson and his wife, Donna of Arundel; two daughters, Joan Beal of Gresham, Ore., and Alice Cooper and her husband, Bob of Bar Harbor; four grandchildren, Melissa, Leslee, Christian and Edmund Jr.; and one great-grandson, Joseph.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Main Street, North Berwick.

Interment will be in the Crown Point Cemetery in Strafford in the spring.

Anna Banks

ROCHESTER - Anna Katharina Banks, 81, of 301 Wyandotte Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 4, 1920, in Bad-Hersfeld, Germany, the daughter of Jakob and Anna (Hildebrand) Scheuler.

She was a homemaker and member of the St. John’s ACC Church of Rochester.

She is survived by her daughter, Heidi Katharina Wittekind and her husband, Herbert of Budigen, Germany; her son, Mark T. Banks and his wife, Sandy I. of Loudon; two grandsons, Herbert and Maximillion Wittekind of Budigen; a sister, MariAnne Fleming of Worcester, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. John ACC Church, P.O. Box 1204, Rochester, NH 03866.

Hazel DesJardins

ROCHESTER - Hazel M. DesJardins, 91, of 3 Outlook Lane, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home. She was the beloved wife of Raymond W. DesJardins for over 53 years.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral & Cremation Services, 177 North Main St., Rochester.

Walter Desotelle Jr.

NORTH HAMPTON - Walter J. Desotelle Jr., 58, of Granite Post Green passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Dover, Feb. 17, 1933, the son of Walter and Anna (Sweeney) Desotelle, he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and was a lifelong resident of the area.

He served in the U.S. Navy four years during the Korean War. Mr. Desotelle was employed with Public Service Company of N.H. for 36 years retiring from the Schiller Station Power Plant.

An avid golfer, he was a member of Rockingham Country Club, the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Judith (Goss) Desotelle; his children, Mark Desotelle of North Berwick, Maine, Jeff Desotelle of Durham, Susan Winter of Buffalo, N.Y., Terry Flood of Lynnfield, Mass., Scott Cadieux of Exeter and Sheila Wardwell of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Zachary and Nicole Desotelle and Christopher, Sarah and Allison Flood; a sister, Barbie Weston of Portsmouth; a brother, Paul Desotelle of Florida; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Phillip Desotelle.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 9 a.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Friends invited. No visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.
