Ina Perkins

DOVER - Ina Elizabeth "Betty" Phillips Perkins, 80, of Dover, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her residence.

She was born April 6, 1921, in Swampscott, Mass., the daughter of Leroy Herbert and Beulah May (Gerini) Phillips. She moved to Dover at a very young age and attended local schools.

Later in life, she enrolled at McIntosh College where she majored in secretarial and business office studies. She was a very proficient as a stenographer and was an exceptional typist. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, Class of 1952, where she majored in occupational therapy. While at college, she became active with her sorority. Over the years, she was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machine operator.

She was a loyal employee with strong, positive work ethics. She was proud to work at the shipyard. It was her part of giving back something to a country where she was proud to live.

In her leisure time, she was active with the American Occupational Association. She loved collecting antiques and collectibles.

She had collected over the years a number of old carousel horses, which she truly treasured. She was very proud of her Phillips family heritage and long-standing connection with the B&M Railroad in this area.

She collected and maintained a large collection of model railroads, many of them depicting the B&M. This collection was a shrine, honoring her family and her family’s history.

She looked forward to spending time at her beach cottage, the "Sea Witch," and took many walks on York Beach enjoying the magnificent Atlantic Ocean.

Mrs. Perkins loved chocolate and created many delicious chocolate desserts for friends and family. She was quoted as saying, "As far as I am concerned, there is only one flavor in this world and it’s chocolate."

She was an avid Boston Celtics fan and a real fan of former Celtic great, Larry Bird. She also loved the many pets she had over the years.

She loved listening to jazz and Big Band music and had the opportunity to meet Lou Rawls. She especially loved listening to Frank Sinatra.

But above all things, her favorite pleasure was to adore and be with her loving son, Mark of Dover. She never called her son Mark but instead called him "Speck" or Phillips, which according to Mark was an honor he will cherish forever.

She is survived by her son; a stepson, Edward C. Perkins of Newbury, Mass.; a stepbrother, Forrest Quimby of New York; many cousins, friends and acquaintances from the Candia and Dover, N.H., and Kittery Point, Maine, areas.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Deidre, who now will be reunited in heaven with her loving mother.

A funeral service will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Friends may gather for a time of visitation on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

A graveside committal service and burial will follow in First Baptist Cemetery, Kittery Point, Maine. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Pauline Roderick

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Pauline A. Roderick, 77, formerly of Dawson Street, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in Columbia, Tenn.

She was born, Aug. 13, 1924, in Augusta, the daughter of Ellis and Katherine Lizotte, and was educated in the Augusta Schools.

Mrs. Roderick had been a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Lewis Roderick and his wife, Sheila, of Berwick, Bruce Roderick and his wife, Sue, of Dover, N.H., Michael Roderick and his wife, Sheri, of Pennsylvania; two daughters, Pamela Lemeire of Columbia, Tenn., and Sandra and her husband, Barry Short, of Somersworth, N.H.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Roderick who died in 1982 and a son, Paul Roderick who died in 1989.

A Memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Berwick United Methodist Church with Dr. Peggy Dunn, pastor officiating.

Roy Tufts

MIDDLETON - Roy "Putty" Tufts, 82, formerly of Middleton, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.

Born July 15, 1919, in Middleton, he was the son of Joseph Wright Tufts and Lillian (Tuttle) Tufts. He had resided in Middleton for many years.

His employment had been at a turkey farm in Greenland, at the Ralph Canney Chicken Farm on Meaderboro Road in Farmington and with the DiPrizio Lumber Co. of Middleton.

He is survived by his sister, Marion Hibbard of Farmington; many nieces and nephews including, Wayne Jenness of Farmington, Helen Leighton of Farmington and Maurice Tufts.

He was predeceased by eight siblings, Ransom Tufts, Mose Tufts, Herbert Tufts, Melvin Tibbetts, Orrin Tufts, Forrest Tibbetts, Doris Woodman and Corabelle Leighton.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St., Farmington.

Interment will be in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington.

Phyllis Wilson

ROCHESTER - Phyllis G. Wilson, 89, of Portland Street, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the Sunbridge Healthcare Rehabilitation of Rochester.

Born Oct. 10, 1912, in Portland, Maine, she was the daughter of Charles and Florence (Blake) Wilson.

She often shared fond memories of her treasured childhood in Cortland, Maine, and Milton. As a young woman, she attended Nasson College in home economics.

During World War II, she proudly joined the war effort and began work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

In 1963, she moved to Rochester where she resided with her dear friend, Mary Bowden, for over 30 years. She and Mary cared lovingly for their wire-haired terriers, Sally and Nikki.

She was and avid gardener and always eager to learn through her love for reading. She spent much time with friends and family enjoying the outdoor activities such as fishing and sightseeing. She will be sadly missed.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret (Babe) Butler and her husband, John, of Somersworth; a brother, Robert Wilson and his wife, Marilyn, of Montpellier, Vt.; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles Wilson of Rochester; many nieces and nephews; grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and friends.

She is predeceased by her brother, Charles Wilson, as well as her life long friend and companion, Mary Bowden.

Contributions may be made to the NH Farm Museum, Milton.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

Burial will be in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, Maine, in the spring.

Jeannette Butler
SOMERSWORTH - Jeannette Butler, 82, of 60 Kelwyn Drive and formerly of 23 South Blueberry Lane, Rochester, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at her niece’s residence in Somersworth after a period of failing health.

Born March 11, 1919, in Dover, she was the daughter of Wilfred and Odelie (Grenier) Arbour.

She was employed with Eastern Air Devices for 25 years retiring in 1975.

She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her special niece, Janet Chabot and her husband, Martin, of Somersworth; her nephew, Richard Arbour and his wife, Barbara; many other nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Albert E. Butler; four brothers, Wilfred Jr., Normand, Robert and Roland Arbour.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held at 1 p.m., Friday at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., with the Rev. Fritz J. Cerullo, O.S.A., pastor of St. Mary’s Church of Dover, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 662 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Joseph Bekeris

DURHAM - Joseph Bekeris, 86, of 13 Mill Road, Durham, died at home with his family at his side on Jan. 28, 2002, after a long illness.

Mr. Bekeris was born in Rokiskis, Lithuania, and served in the Lithuania Army. After being displaced from this cherished homeland during World War II, Mr. Bekeris and his wife emigrated to the United States in 1949 and resided for most of his life at 16 Plymouth Street, Gardner, Mass.

He was a retired press operator from Collier Keyworth Company, where he worked for 27 years.

He was a kind, gentle and generous man who brought honor and dignity to himself and his family. Mr. Bekeris was president and a member of the Board of Directors of the Lithuanian Outing Association and was the founder of the Lithuanian Bowling League. He was an avid bowler and fisherman.

He leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Blanche Brone Bekeris; his daughter, Vi. B. McNeill and son-in-law, Malcom R. McNeill Jr. of Durham; two grandchildren, Jenna Bekeris McNeill and Adam Joseph McNeill; a brother, William Bekeris in Latvia; numerous relatives in Lithuania and many cousins in the U.S.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, from the Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., Gardner, Mass., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in the Holy Spirit Church, Lovewell St., Gardner. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, friends may consider donations to Seacoast Hospice, Central Avenue, Dover, NH 03820.

Marjorie Casey

KITTERY, Maine - Marjorie K. Casey, 74, of 83 Norton Road, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born in Houlton on Aug. 24, 1927, she was a daughter of Arthur and Agnes (Bulley) Tracy.

She was a graduate of Kennebunk High School, Class of 1945. She received her bachelor of science degree magna cum laude from the University of New Hampshire in 1978.

She was a registered nurse employed for many years as an EMT instructor and school nurse at the Greenland, N.H., Central School. She also taught CPR courses for the Red Cross and was the first female volunteer with the Greenland Volunteer Fire Department.

She was a member and past president of the VFW Post No. 168 Auxiliary in Portsmouth, N.H. She enjoyed crocheting and was well-known for her love of animals.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald F. Casey, who died in 1978.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Gibbens of Connecticut, Linda L. Casey of Kittery and Heather Casey of Portsmouth, N.H.; two sons, Daniel M. Casey of Nottingham, N.H., and David A. Casey of Greenland; four grandchildren; two sisters, Ora Sampson of Wells and Alma Cobb of Portland; two brothers, Arthur Tracy Jr. and Preston Tracy, both of Wells; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.

Dorothy Crosby

BELMONT - Dorothy (Barber) Crosby, 96, of Belmont, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington, Mass.

Born in North Adams, Mass., and a lifelong resident of Belmont before becoming one of the original settlers of Brookhaven at Lexington.

She attended the Master’s Boarding School in Dobbsferry, N.Y., and the Madiera School in Washington, D.C., and a graduate of Smith College, Class of 1929.

She was a homemaker. She was also and a member of the Florence Critterdon League, Belmont Women’s Club, and a volunteer at the McLean Hospital, Belmont, for over 20 years.

She was a dear and devoted mother of C. Thomas Crosby and his wife, Barb P. of Madbury; the late Margaret Merrick and her husband, Harold; loving granny of Laurel Archibald of Wellesley, James Merrick of Palm Harbor, Fla.; Deborah Reed of Sterling, N.J.; Jeannette Green of Bedford and Valerie Griffin of Wells, Maine; and 10 loving great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Monday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. in the Plymouth Congregational Church, 582 Pleasant St., Belmont.

Interment Pinehill Cemetery, Dover.

Contributions in her memory to the Brigham & Women’s Hospital Gyn-Oncology Discretionary Fund, c/o of the Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02116, would be sincerely appreciated.

Col. John Curry

DOVER - Col. John V. Curry, 79, of Dover, currently residing in Juno Beach, Fla., passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002.

He was born in Buffalo, N.Y. on Aug. 8, 1922.

Col. Curry served his country proudly as a combat veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. As an enlisted man, he landed troops on the beach in Normandy. He was awarded over 30 decorations and medals including the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Medal and United Nations Service Medal.

He earned his undergraduate degree from George Washington University and his master’s degree from Butler University.

Upon return from Vietnam, he served as the head of the Applied Journalism Department at the Defense Information Center, Fort Harrison.

After his retirement from the Armed Services in 1972, he worked as the dean of men at Chatard High School in Indianapolis, Ind., and then guidance counselor at Indian River High School, Selbyville, Del.

Col. Curry remained an active member in the Veteran of Foreign Wars Association, serving as the State Commander of V.F.W. Department of Delaware. Most recently, he spent time volunteering for the American Red Cross, helping disaster relief efforts throughout the nation.

He is survived by his son, John M. Curry of North Palm Beach, Fla.; daughters, Elizabeth Gross of Kaiserslautern, Germany, Catherine Worrall and Therese Cochran, both of Fishers, Ind., Patricia Ryan of Indianapolis, Ind.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his friend, June Wheeler.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, Feb. 8. Donations may be made to Transportation Museum, Fort Eustes, VA 23604.

Doris Dalton

SOMERSWORTH - Doris May Dalton, 78, of 15 Sunset Drive, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2001, at her home after a brief illness.

Mrs. Dalton was born on May 25, 1923, in Lynn, Mass., and was the daughter of Roland and Agnes (Desmond) Howard. She was raised in Lynn, attending schools in that community. She was a graduate of Lynn English High School. Prior to her marriage in 1950, she had been employed with General Electric of Lynn. She moved to Somersworth in 1950.

Family members include her five children, William and his wife, Ellen Dalton, of Hancock, James and his wife, Patricia Dalton, of Rochester, Michael and his wife, Lauri, of Dover, Donna Lowell and her husband, Gregory, of Chester and Deborah Burger of Somersworth; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, James R. Dalton Sr. who died in 1999.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South St., Somersworth.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, 10 a.m., at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, High Street, Somersworth with the Rev. Stephen Kucharski, pastor as celebrant. Burial will be in the spring in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Somersworth.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions in her name to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-4688.
