Walter Westberg
PLYMOUTH - Walter F. Westberg, 82, of Carpenter Park Road, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Concord.
He was born on March 18, 1919, in Hallock, Minn., the son of Per Olaf and Nellie (Peterson) Westberg.
Walter served six years as Chief Petty Officer Commissaryman in the U.S. Navy. He moved to Plymouth in the 1940s. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Plymouth. An avid golfer who enjoyed making custom clubs, he spent much of his free time as a volunteer ranger at the White Mountain Country Club. Playing pool with friends and family as well as working in his garden were among his pastimes.
Walter was a collector of Draper and Maynard memorabilia, some of which he donated to Plymouth State College and is on display in the D&M building.
He was predeceased by a brother, Art, and a sister, Mary Ann.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dorothy A. (Blake) Westberg of Plymouth; three daughters, Margaret Terrasi of Holderness, Barbara Jalbert of Belmont and Julie Jaquith of Plymouth; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Delwin Westberg, Henning Westberg and Hilding Westberg; two sisters, Olive Blake and Jeanette Johnston; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at Mayhew Funeral Home, 12 Langdon St., Monday from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Margaret Bickford will officiate. A spring burial will be held in the Riverside Cemetery, Fairgrounds Road, Plymouth. Please omit flowers. Dorothy Crosby
BELMONT, Mass. - Dorothy (Barber) Crosby, 96, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at the Lahey Clinic.
Born in North Adams, Mass., she was a lifelong resident of Belmont before becoming one of the original settlers of Brookhaven at Lexington.
She attended Master’s Boarding School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and the Madiera School in Washington, D.C., and was a graduate of Smith College, class of 1929.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Florence Critterdon League, Belmont Women’s Club and a volunteer for more than 20 years at McLean Hospital in Belmont.
The widow of Harold Crosby, survivors include her son, C. Thomas Crosby and his wife, Barb P. Crosby, of Madbury; five grandchildren, Laurel Archibald of Wellesley, Mass., James Merrick of Palm Harbor, Fla., Deborah Reed of Sterling, N.J., Jeannette Green of Bedford and Valerie Griffin of Wells, Maine; and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Plymouth Congregational Church, 582 Pleasant St., Belmont.
A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.

Naomi Ranguette
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Naomi "Ruth" (Reed) Ranguette, 66, of 42 Cutts St., passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at home with her family.
She was born in Kansas City, Kan., Aug. 19, 1935, the daughter of the late Edward and Myrtle (Keith) Reed.
Mrs. Ranguette attended high school in Independence, Mo., and McIntosh College in Dover.
Mrs. Ranguette was proprietor of Chipmunk Office Services in Portsmouth until her retirement in 2001.
She loved to play bingo, read, spend time with her grandchildren and crochet or knit gifts for family and friends.
Besides her husband of 14 years, Joseph A. Ranguette, survivors include her children, Steven Golnik of Little Rock, Ark., Deborah McNally of Barrington, Rebecca McKnight of Berwick, Maine, Matthew McKnight of Wainai, Hawaii, Daniel McKnight of Lowell, Mass., Joe Clark of Oxford, Maine, Steve Clark of Pawtucket, R.I., Michael Ranguette of Milton and Arthur Ranguette of Portsmouth; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her stepmother, Helen Reed; and many aunts and uncles in Kansas and Washington.
A funeral service will be held at the Barrington Evangelical Free Church, Route 126, Barrington, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Monday, 6-8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted.
Stephen Steinmuller
STRAFFORD - Dr. Stephen R. Steinmuller, 61, died at the Miami Heart Institute on Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, attended by his wife, Kathlene Crowell Steinmuller, brother, Dr. Donald Steinmuller of Chicago, and friend, Kathryn Kelley of Boston.
Born May 30, 1940, in Tacoma, Wash., Dr. Steinmuller grew up in Marblehead, Mass., attended Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and Tufts University Medical School in Boston. He served his country during the Vietnam War while stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, training Army doctors.
Dr. Steinmuller practiced 14 years in Concord as an internist and nephrologist with his partner and good friend, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy Jr., of Hopkinton. He brought the first in hospital dialysis services to community hospitals in Concord and Manchester and founded Dialysis Services of N.H., Inc., which was the first chronic dialysis service provided in the state. In 1981, with Dr. Murphy, he started the Seacoast Dialysis Center to serve patients along the coast of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Dr. Steinmuller retired for health reasons in 1987 and has lived in the Florida Keys since 1988, enjoying his family, friends, music and poetry. He spent summers at his island home on Bow Lake in Strafford and was active in the Bow Lake Camp Owners Association developing and implementing a lake monitoring program.
Stephen was a kind, gentle and loving man, and was much beloved by his wife, Kathlene; mother-in-law, Agnes Crowell; brother, Donald; nieces, Nicole and Kelly Steinmuller; godson, Brian Kelley; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and many dear friends in Florida and New Hampshire.
Memorial arrangements in Florida and New Hampshire are pending. Donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the charity of one’s choice.
MertonHastings Sr.
GRANTHAM - Merton "Bill" W. Hastings Sr., 86, of Grantham, died on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in the family homestead where he was born on Nov. 5, 1915.
He was the son of Willis and Laura (Crockett) Hastings. He had been a lifelong resident of Grantham where he operated his family farm. He was married to Pearl Smith, who died in 1999. He had served the Town of Grantham as a road agent and as a selectman. A personal man, he enjoyed farming and his family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Hastings; a sister, Harriett Savage; and two brothers, Harold and Lester Hastings.
He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Day of Grantham, formally of Rochester; a son, Merton W. Hastings Jr. of Grantham; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held in the spring in the East Grantham Cemetery.

Dorothy Cronin
HAMPTON FALLS - Dorothy (White) Cronin, 75, of 142 Exeter Road died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington, Mass.
Born in Bluefield, W.Va., on Feb. 28, 1925, she was the daughter of Emmett L. and Eula G. (Carter) White. She lived in Hampton Falls since 1989. From 1970 to 1989, she resided in Lynnfield, Mass., and in Manchester for 15 years.
She graduated from Roanoke High School in Virginia. In addition, she graduated from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville.
Mrs. Crorin was a member of Manchester Country Club.
Family members include her husband, J. Leo Cronin Jr. of Hampton Falls; a son, Jonathan R. Savage of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a daughter, Barbera Jo Savage of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a brother, Emmett L. White of Atlanta, Ga.
Barbara Eaton
DOVER - Barbara M. Eaton, 76, formerly of 63 Mt. Vernon St. died Friday, May 5, 2000, at St. Ann Home after a period of failing health.
Born Oct. 25, 1923 in Dover, she was the daughter of Walter A. and Gertrude L. (Horne) Cheney.
She was retired from C.I.A. Washington, DC after 27 years of employment.
She was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church; a member of the Cocheco Grange #81 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 528, Dover.
Survivors include her husband of seven years, Raymond G. Eaton of Dover; one stepson and his wife, Guy and JoAnn Eaton of Dover; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Thomas (Susan) Moore of Dover and Ms. Deborah Eaton of Cranston, R.I.; a foster sister, Mrs. Richard (Marjorie) Gilbert of Newmarket; five grandchildren and cousins.

Reginald Hatfield
NORTH HAMPTON - Reginald S. "Bud" Hatfield, 55, of 206A Atlantic Ave., died Thursday, May 4, 2000, in Rye.
Born in Lancaster on Oct 5, 1944, he was the son of Leroy D. and Bertha C. (Sheridan) Hatfield. He was a 1962 graduate of Whitefield High School.
Mr. Hatfield worked as a lobsterman on the Seacoast for several years. In addition, he worked in the construction industry.
He was a member of John W. Weeks Post 3041, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lancaster.
Family members include a son, Steven R. Hatfield of Dalton; two daughters, Landra Leach of Los Angeles, Calif., and Shelley Wadleigh of Kensington; a grandchild; two brothers, Charles Hatfield and Donald Hatfield, both of Whitefield; and two sisters, Linda Goldstein and Sandra Evote, both of Mesa, Ariz.
Mary Maxfield
ROCHESTER - Mary M. Maxfield, 91, longtime resident of Dover Rehab and Living Center, died Monday, May 8, 2000 at the home after a period of failing health.
She was born Feb. 28, 1909, in Rochester, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Kittredge) Scahill. She was a lifelong resident of Rochester and had worked many years at the Wyandotte Woolen Mill. Mrs. Maxfield was a member of St. Mary’s Church of Rochester. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and participating in the activities at the home.
The widow of Walter Maxfield, she is survived by her daughter, Catherine Maxfield Levesque of Newport Richey, Fla.; two grandchildren, Mark Levesque and Maureen Fritz, both of Rochester; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit today from 7-9 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Charles Street, with Fr. Francis Kelso as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lowell Street.

Mary Moody
SHAPLEIGH, Maine - Mary A. Moody, 80, of Shapleigh Road died Sunday, May 7, 2000 at Greenwood Center in Sanford.
Born May 9, 1919, in Shapleigh, the daughter of James G. and Katherine M. Grant Rankin, she lived in Shapleigh all of her life, and was a 1937 graduate and valedictorian of the former Lindsay High School.
Mrs. Moody was the tax collector in Shapleigh for 14 years. She was the treasurer for Highland Grove Cemetery for several years leaving that position last year.
She and her husband Richard A. Moody, Sr., who died in 1980, raised, trained and raced horses. Mrs. Moody loved birds, having many bird feeders at her home.
She is survived by a son, Richard A. Moody Jr.; three brothers, Lewis Rankin and James K. Rankin, both of Sanford, and Robert Rankin of Shapleigh; a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Moody and a grandson, Michael Patrick Moody, both of Shapleigh.
Mrs. Moody was predeceased by a sister, Helen Shedd.
Zena Moulton
FROSTPROOF, Fla. - Zena E. Moulton, 92, of Thomas Avenue died Friday, May 4, 2000 following an extended illness.
Born, April 9, 1908, in Berwick, Maine, the daughter of Byron and Nellie (Banfield) Tibbetts, she was educated in Berwick schools and attended Burdett College in Boston, Mass. She had been a long time resident of Berwick moving to Florida in 1980.
Mrs. Moulton was affiliated with the Berwick United Methodist Church and the First Assembly of God of Lake Wales, Fla.
She was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary in Maine and had been the president for one year. She was a member of the Women’s Relief Corps in Maine, a member of the Rebekah Lodge and a member of the Sisters of the Nights of Pythias.
Her husband, Oscar R. Moulton died in 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Norman and his wife, Agnes, of Somerville, Va. and Lawrence L. and his wife, Sarah Moulton, of Berwick, Maine; two daughters, Mrs. Alan (Glenna) Higgins of Frostproof and Mrs. Harold (Thelma) Sills of Orchard Lake, Mich.; one brother, Byron "Hytie" Tibbetts and a sister, Mrs. Ruby Brooks, both of Berwick; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Laing Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick, Maine.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Laing Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chambae Lee, pastor of the Berwick United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.
Myra Nicholson
PORTSMOUTH - Myra L. (Smith) Johnson Nicholson, 83, widow of Harold Nicholson, of 346 Pleasant St., died Monday, May 8, 2000 at the Mark H. Wentworth Home.
Born in Portsmouth April 30, 1917, she was the daughter of George and Carolyn (Carr) Smith. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1935, and had been employed as a Clerk at the Colonial Laundry in Portsmouth.
Mrs. Nicholson was a member of the 1st Pentacostal Church in Portsmouth and a member of the 1st Assembly of God Church in Zephyrhills, Fla.
She is survived by three sons, Albert C. Johnson of Greenland, Burleigh Johnson of Portsmouth, and Byron Johnson of Brooksville, Fla.; one daughter, Helen Fieldsend of Greenland; five grandchildren, Keith Johnson, Linda Fowle, Alison Bauer, Christine Williamson, and David Fieldsend; seven great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.
She was also pre-deceased by her first husband, Charles Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Thursday, at 1 p.m. Friends are invited. Visiting hours at the Chapel are Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Randolph "Charles" Nutter, 77, who died Feb. 9, 2000, will have a committal service at the Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick, on Friday, May 12, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Gerald Scribner of the First Congregational Church of North Berwick will officiate.

Edward Philbrick
KITTERY, Maine - Edward E. Philbrick, 49, of Martin Road, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at York Hospital, after a long period of illness.
Born March 4, 1951 in Kittery, he was the son of Lee and Catherine (Renner) Philbrick. He was a lifelong resident of Kittery.
Mr. Philbrick worked in the fishing industry and enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He was a member of the York Fish and Game Club.
He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Walter Philbrick.
His wife Donna, of 22 years, survives him.
Other survivors include his son, Joshua Philbrick of Kittery; a daughter, Kristy Philbrick of Kittery; two brothers, Albert Homer Philbrick of Florida, and Lee Philbrick Jr. of New Jersey; three sisters, Irene Squires of Massachusetts, Virginia Littlefield of Cape Neddick, and Jean Milbert of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
