Dorothy French
DOVER - Dorothy Pearl French, 91, formerly of Oak Street, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home after a period of failing health.
Born Jan. 24, 1910, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Bernard F. and Mary (Rust) Sears Sr.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 8 and the Cocheco Grange No. 81.
She resided at Riverside Rest Home during her final years, where she received excellent, loving care and attention from the staff of Unit 4.
The widow of Leon E. French Sr., who died in 1969, she is survived by two sons, Leon E. French Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Northwood; Donald W. French Sr. and his wife, Claire, of Mims, Fla., and Barbara Kagliery and her husband, Harry, of Dover; a brother, Bernard F. Sears Jr. of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. Peg Roberts of Mickleton, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Emily and Ruth Sears; three granddaughters; and a great-grandson.
Friends and relatives may call one hour prior to the funeral service which will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., with the Rev. Ann Robinson, pastor, St. John’s United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery. The family requests family flowers only. Those who wish may make donations in her memory to the Riverside Rest Home Activities Fund, 276 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.
Thomas Janelle
DOVER - Thomas P. Janelle, 29, of 595 Central Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
Born in Dover on Jan. 2, 1972, the son of Raymond L. and Ellen (Murphy) Janelle and has lived there all of his lifetime. He was a graduate of Dover High School where he played baseball and football.
Mr. Janelle was a carpenter and two years ago he started his own contracting business building houses.
He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Ellen Janelle of Dover; his daughter, Kaitlyn Marie of Lebanon, Maine; a sister, Paula Janelle of Madbury; his fiance, Shauna Lynn Michaud of Dover; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church with the Rev. John Poirier, associate pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery.
Helen McNally
DOVER - Helen Sylvia McNally, 77, formerly of Cocheco Park, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Seacoast Health Center, Hampton, after a battle with cancer.
Born March 28, 1924, in Exeter, she was the daughter of Stephen and Isabella (Parker) Kujeske.
She was employed by Hooz, Virginia Lee and Kates’ Dress Shops of Dover.
A proud veteran, she served as a nurse in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Receiving Station, South Annex Naval Station, Norfolk, Va.
She was a life member of the DAV, Chapter 5 of Dover and a member of the Business Professional Women’s Club of Dover.
She is survived by a son, Francis McNally and his wife, Monica; grandchildren, Maeghan, Meredith and Christine, all of Lee; two sisters, Christine Dining of Exeter and Caroline Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Arthur Rohr of Denver, Colo.; and one niece, Robin Copp Currier of Brentwood.
Friends and relatives may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. John Poirier as celebrant.
Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery Veterans’ Lot.

DOVER - George William Rolfe, 74, of Wilbrod Avenue, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home after a period of failing health.

Stella Athearn
DOVER - Stella K. Athearn, 73, died on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health.
She was born in Somersworth on Jan. 13, 1928, the daughter of the late George and Mary (Pouragil) Gourdouros.
Stella moved to Dover 51 years ago from Somersworth.
She worked at various shoe shops until settling at the University of New Hampshire where she worked in the ROTC program until her retirement in 1991.
Stella was a member of the Somersworth American Legion Auxiliary. She loved playing bingo and cards and was an avid puzzle maker. She also had a passion for horses and raised them for 25 years.
She is survived by her son Brian and his fiancee Margaret of Dover; a sister, Mary Catsoulis and her husband Ernest, who was like a brother to Stella, of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.
Stella was predeceased by her husband Owen A. Athearn, her parents George and Mary (Pouragil) Gourdouros; three brothers, Nick, Chris and Charles Gourdouros and a sister, Antonia Hill.
Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, Nov. 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church with the Rev. Fritz Cerullo, OSA pastor as celebrant, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery at the family lot.

Lillian Buck
DOVER - Lillian M. Buck, 87, of Dover, died suddenly on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
Lillian is the daughter of the late Henry Hofbauer and Lillian (Ackerman) Hofbauer, and is widowed by her husband, John David Buck.
Lillian was born on May 19, 1914, in New York City.
She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, loved to cook, and was an avid baseball fan. Lillian is a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Cyosset, N.Y., and regularly attended the Barrington Evangelical Free Church in Barrington.
Survivors include four sons: Timothy Buck and his wife Cynthia of Dover, John D. Buck Jr. and his wife Rachael of Westbury, N.Y., Steven H. Buck and his wife Leah of Safety Harbor, Fla., and Daniel R. Buck and his wife Margery of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother, Howard Hofbauer of Belfast, Maine; a sister, Viola Maher of Centerport, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Graham Buck, Stephanie Buck, John D. Buck III, Peter Buck, David Buck and Amanda Buck.
Lillian is predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Kent.

Elizabeth Cassidy
NORTHWOOD - Elizabeth "Betty" Cassidy, longtime resident of Northwood, died peacefully with her family in attendance on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, in her home at Heartland Place, Epsom, following a lengthy illness.
Betty was born in Chicago, Ill., on May 15, 1922, the daughter of the late William J. and Jennie (Larson) Manners.
Betty is survived by four sons, Joseph Cassidy, Daniel Cassidy, James Cassidy, John Cassidy; three daughters, Elizabeth Cameron, Mary Scamman and Patricia Cassidy; 21 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Chester (Dorothy) Conklin, Edenton, N.C.; a brother, Bill Manners, Raleigh, N.C.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Cassidy in 1972 and also by her brother, Stuart Allen Manners.
Friends may call on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Peabody Funeral Home and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Road, Londonderry, N.H. Merle Cook
MILTON - Merle L. Cook, 52, of Dawson Street in Milton, died on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at home, due to ALS.
Born Sept. 4, 1949, in Milton, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Mary (Ramsey) Stowe. She had resided in Milton for most of her life and was a graduate of Nute High School in Milton, Class of 1967.
A homemaker, she had worked as a seamstress for the former Mrs. Pappas Dress Shop of Dover and had worked as a bartender at the Milton Moose Lodge.
She attended the Nute Ridge Bible Chapel and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Milton Moose Lodge, actively involved with their charities. She was also involved with the annual Milton Winter Carnival.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond N. Cook of Milton and her daughter, Amy Cook of Milton; three step-children, Kimberly Avery of Milton, Ronald Cook of Milton and Eric Cook of Dover, eight step-grandchildren and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours are Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at C.E. Peaslee & Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St., Farmington.
The Funeral Service will be on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Arnold, pastor of the Nute Ridge Bible Chapel, officiating. Interment will follow at Milton Mills Cemetery.

Gladys Howe
LACONIA - Gladys E. Howe, 94, of 80 Spring St., Laconia, died at Lakes Region General Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001.
Mrs. Howe was born Sept. 21, 1907, in North Andover, Mass., daughter of Alfred and Ethel (Weighhill) Kershaw.
Mrs. Howe moved to Alton from Westwood, Mass., in 1946. She resided in Alton until moving to Laconia in 1991.
While residing in Alton, Mrs. Howe was very active in community affairs. She served as a School Board member for 12 years and was chairman of the building committee when the current Alton High School was built.
Mrs. Howe was appointed by former Governor Meldrim Thomson Jr. to be a member of the Governor’s Commission on Public Education in 1973. For 25 years, she served as secretary of the Alton-Alton Bay Chamber of Commerce, organizing and implementing many townwide activities, including the annual town fireworks, band concerts and art shows. She operated the Information Booth in Alton Bay for 26 years. She retired in 1987 as the Alton town treasurer, after 19 years of service. For 29 years, she served as a trustee, secretary, and treasurer of the Gilman Home in Alton, only recently resigning in May 2001.
She enjoyed her flower gardens, cooking, sewing and her family.
Survivors include her daughter Ethel H. Dodge and son-in-law Leon T. Dodge of Alton; her son David T. Howe and daughter-in-law Susan Howe of Gilford; four grandchildren, Louise M. Wakefield of Three Springs, Pa., David D. Dodge of New Durham, Mark T. Dodge of Laconia and Debra D. Nugent of Laconia; eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother Everett Kershaw of Mass.; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Francis H. Howe.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. at Old Riverside Cemetery on Main Street in Alton, with the Rev. Peter Bolster, pastor of the Community Church of Alton, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Alton Community Services Center.

William Keck
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - William Truman "Bill" Keck, 55, of Boyds Corner Road, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, of a heart attack at his home.
He was born on Nov. 2, 1946, in Kittery, Maine, the son of Truman and Josephine (Zoffolli) Keck. He has lived in South Berwick for 11 years, moving from Nottingham, N.H.
Bill was an engineer supervisor at Davidson Automotive in Farmington, N.H. He has worked for Davidson for more than 30 years.
Members of his family include his mother, Josephine Keck of Nottingham, N.H.; his wife, Robyn A. (Butler) Keck of South Berwick; two daughters, Stephanie Keck of Nottingham and Patricia Keck of Portsmouth, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Toni Burns of South Berwick and Tamber Burns of Kennebunk; a sister and her husband, Sue and John Vincinguerra of Portsmouth, N.H.; his grandchildren, Truman, River and Zoe; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive Bill.
Bill’s father Truman Keck died two years ago.

Priscilla Philbrick
SILVER LAKE - Our beloved mother, Priscilla Plummer Forrest Philbrick of Silver Lake died on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, after a short illness.
She was born on March 23, 1902, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Henry E. Plummer and Ethel Harmon Plummer. Priscilla was married first to Isaiah Lord Forrest, her husband for 42 years, who died in 1967, and subsequently to her second husband of seven years, Frank H. Philbrick, who died in 1977.
Her two sisters, Katherine P. Bartlett Richardson and Elizabeth F. Waterbury, predeceased her.
Priscilla was an active person throughout her long life. A graduate of Lynn Classical High School, she attended the Conservatory of Music in Boston prior to her marriage in 1925. She taught piano in Madison for many years and sang in the Madison Church choir. She remained a member in the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years and, similarly, was a member of long-standing in the Women’s Club. She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Priscilla is survived by her three children; a son George N. and Marcia H. Forrest and their three daughters and families; a daughter, Elizabeth F. and Dr. William H. Annis and their three sons and families; and a son, Henry N. and Susan E. Forrest and their two sons and daughter and families - these families include nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren ; two nephews, Philip W. Bartlett and his wife Martha of Florida and David C. Waterbury and his wife Claudia of Nevada; and a cousin Janet Gerry Vincik and her husband Henry of Springvale, Iowa, survive her.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Madison Church. There will be no visiting hours.

Norma Chisholm
NORTH HAMPTON - Norma Irene Chisholm, 86, formerly of Atlantic Avenue, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at the McCoy home for the Elderly in Newport.
She was born in Claremont, on Feb. 16, 1915, the daughter of Orson P. and Sadie (Lombard) Nichols. She resided in North Hampton for 45 years, moving to Claremont in 1999. She was a 1932 graduate of Charlestown High School where she was the class salutatorian. She graduated in 1938 from Keene Normal School with an elementary school teaching degree.
Mrs. Chisholm taught school in Claremont, Westmoreland, and Littleton. After her marriage in 1954 she taught in North Hampton, Hampton Falls, Exeter, and Stratham.
She was a 60-year member of the Grange, involved in local, state, and national levels. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Chisholm was the widow of James Alan Chisholm who died in 1983. She was predeceased by three sisters, Vera LeClair, Doris Nichols and Nathalie Nichols; and one brother, Everett Nichols.
The family includes three sisters, Lillian French of South Acworth, Marion Forest of Liberty, N.Y. and Thelma Ferland of Claremont; one brother, Herbert Nichols of Claremont; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at the North Hampton United Church of Christ on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 1:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Private burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket.
