Alfonso Tarantino III

RYE - Alfonso "Funzi" Aldo Tarantino III, 90, of 9 Frontier St., died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002.

Born July 17, 1911, in Patterson, N.J., he was the third of 12 children born to Alfonso Aldo and Maria (Melluso) Tarantino.

He resided in Rye for 33 years with his wife, Doris, who died in 1985.

Mr. Tarantino retired from Vallee’s Restaurant in 1984 at the age of 72. He enjoyed traveling and went on several cruises, his most favorite trip being to Italy in 1986.

Since 1969, he has traveled to New York twice a year to attend annual family reunions. He enjoyed playing chess and cards with friends, was a member of the Elks, several breakfast clubs and was an avid N.Y. Yankees’ fan. His greatest pleasure was dinners surrounded by his family and visits from his brother, Alfred.

The father of eight children, he is survived by seven, Cheryl Tarantino, Stephanie Tarantino, Andrea Green, Lisa Donovan, Robert Tarantino, Eric Tarantino and Jerry Tarantino; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who referred to him as "Gumpy"; three brothers, Alfred, Monty and Ott; a sister, Jean; many nieces and nephews who reside in New York.

He was predeceased by his brother, Bruce Tarantino of Rye, who passed away in 1985.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Summer Street, Portsmouth, on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of New Hampshire, 9 Cedarwood Road, Bedford, NH 03110.

Jane Chatfield

ELIOT, Maine - Jane A. Chatfield, 54, of 14 Hanscom Road, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at York Hospital after a battle with skin cancer.

She was born in Lancaster, Ohio, on Jan. 13, 1946, a daughter of William and Lucille (Misse) Young and attended local schools.

Mrs. Chatfield and her husband, William, moved to the Seacoast area in 1979.

She was a much loved horticulturist and co-owner with her husband, of Sunburst Nurseries in Eliot. She enjoyed her business, her clients and the countless hours she spent with them. She attended the Unitarian Universalist Church in Portsmouth.

She is survived by her husband, William Chatfield of Eliot; her mother, Lucille Young of Sugar Grove, Ohio; and a brother, John, and his wife, Lola Young, of Sugar Grove, Ohio.

Services will be private. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904.

Grace Churchill

SANBORNVILLE - Grace Elizabeth Churchill, 93, formerly of Sanbornville, died Thursday morning May 4, 2000, at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee.

Born June 10, 1906, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Melissa (Battis) Churchill.

She had resided in Sanbornville for many years, having previously lived in Strong, Maine.

During World War II, she worked as a Red Cross Nurse’s Aid. She had worked as a private duty nurse and had also worked at the Perkins School for the Blind.

Grace had attended the United Methodist Church in Sanbornville. She was a former member of the Wakefield-Brookfield Senior Citizens and she was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Maine.

She is survived by her niece, Janet Lambertson of Ephrata, Pa.; three nephews, Clement Churchill of Satellite Beach, Fla., Norman Churchill of Apollo Beach, Fla., and Donald Moore of Otto, N.C.; also several grandnieces and grandnephews.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the family lot in the Lovell Lake Cemetery in Sanbornville. Arrangements are in the care of C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home Wakefield Road in Sanbornville.

Margaret Donovan

LYNN, Mass. - Mrs. Margaret F. Donovan, 93, of Casco Road, died Thursday at home after a lengthy illness, wife of the late John F. Donovan.

Born in Dover, N.H., daughter of the late John J. and Catherine (Donnelly) O’Neil, she was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Dover, N.H., and has been a resident of Lynn for over 70 years. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church Lynnfield and enjoyed sewing.

She leaves one son, John F. Donovan of Tuftonboro, N.H.; two daughters, Sister Margaret A. Donovan, SND of Ipswich and Kathryn M. Donovan of Lynn; one sister, Alice Roussin of Stamford, Conn.; and one granddaughter, K. Maura Donovan of Tuftonboro, N.H.

She was sister of the late John O’Neil and James O’Neil, Mary O’Neil, Etta V. Donovan and Elizabeth Young.

A funeral mass will be held in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn on Monday at 9 a.m. A funeral mass will be held in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield at 10 a.m. Calling hours are Sunday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Donations may be sent in her memory to Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund, 30 Jeffreys Neck Road, Ipswitch, MA. 01938.

Rose Marie Gray

ROCHESTER - Rose Marie "Mimi" Lee (Pickering) Gray , 42, of 96 Winter St., died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

Marie was born in Rochester on June 12, 1957, the daughter of the late Dorothy Pickering. She attended Rochester schools and worked in the shoe factory.

Surviving family members include her loving husband Arnold of four years. She had a daughter, Jennifer. Marie had many friends and several cousins including a very special cousin, Mrs. Gloria Phillips. She was a fun-loving person and she loved cats.

In lieu of flowers, send memorial donations to Gloria Phillips, P.O. Box 645, Rochester, N.H. 03866-0645.

Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, May 9, 2000 from 9-11 a.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H. The memorial service will follow immediately after at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Nelson officiating.

Lawrence Harmon

PORTSMOUTH - Lawrence E. Harmon, 89, of 346 Pleasant St., passed away Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Mark Wentworth Home.

Born in East Machias, Maine, April 20, 1911, he was the son of Walter and Susie (Reynolds) Harmon. He was a graduate of Machias High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. Harmon operated Harmon’s Well Drilling Co. for many years in the Seacoast and in Massachusetts. He was also a life member of the Odd Fellows.

He was the husband of the late Forrestine (Remick) Harmon. Survivors include a son, Alvin Harmon, of Eliot, Maine; two daughters, Rochelle Gray, of Portsmouth and Sandra Dozier, of Rochester; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; one brother and five sisters and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in Central Cemetery in Rye. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, CT 06150-1160. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801.

Robbin Merchant

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Mrs. Robbin A. (McLaughlin) Merchant, 37, wife of Temple C.F. Merchant, of 79 Academy St., died Friday, May 5, 2000, due to complications from diabetes at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Nov. 7, 1962, the daughter of Margaret A. (Robinson) Morin of Kittery, Maine and the late Frederick W. McLaughlin, she attended Portsmouth schools.

Mrs. Merchant was a member of Christian Life Fellowship in Eliot; Frank E. Booms Unit #6, American Legion Auxiliary; Pythian Sisters, Ivy Temple #20 in Kennebunk.

Besides her husband of six years and her mother of Kittery, survivors include five children, Fred Gagnon, Cameron McLaughlin, Justin McLaughlin, Crystal Messler and Peggy Gagnon, all of North Berwick; maternal grandmother, Nettie L. Roslon of Somersworth, N.H.; sister, Jennifer Wellwood and her husband, Thomas, of North Berwick; two brothers, Lucas Morin of Kittery and Mike Morin of Effingham, N.H.; her aunt, Brenda Walton of Portsmouth,N.H., and uncle Bruce McLaughlin of Portsmouth, N.H.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, Frederick W. McLaughlin; five sisters, Patty McLaughlin, Kim McLaughlin, Tony McLaughlin, Kelly McLaughlin, Mary McLaughlin; and two brothers, Scott McLaughlin and Jay McLaughlin.

Funeral services will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Tuesday 2 p.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be at the Chapel from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday with Americana Legion Services at 12:45 p.m. by Frank E. Booma Unit #6. Family flowers only. Catherine Powers

ALTON - Catherine "Kay" Powers, 76, of Eagles Rest Home, died on Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro after a period of failing health.

Born March 10, 1924, in Milton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late William J. and Catherine V. (McCormick) Holland Sr.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph J. Powers Jr. of Alton, and her son, the Very Rev. David B. Powers of Washington, D.C.; also her brother, William J. Holland of Roseburg, Ore.; and her sister, Veronica C. Prentiss of El Centro, Calif.

Calling hours are Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St., Farmington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 8, 2000 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 90 Central St., Farmington with the Very Rev. David Powers, her son as main celebrant and the Rev. Eddy Bisson and the Rev. Adrien Longchamps as concelebrants. Interment will follow at the John Shirley Memorial Cemetery in New Durham. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Piarist Fathers, 1339 Monroe St. N.E., Washington, D.C. 20017.

Sylvia V. Robinson

ROCHESTER - Sylvia V. Robinson, 82, of 11 Lincoln St., died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital following a period of failing health.

Born Feb. 20, 1918, in St. George, Maine, she was the daughter of the late John and Heta (Miettinen) Kulju. Mrs. Robinson was a registered nurse and had worked at Central Maine Medical Center for many years. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and a volunteer in the church’s thrift shop. She was also an assistant leader and den mother with the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Members of her family include her son, John T. Robinson of New Orleans, La.; a daughter, Elosia M. Mattson of Manhattan, Kan.; one grandson, Benjamin Gravolet of La.; one great-grandson, John K. Gravolet of Louisiana; four nieces and nephews; three grandnieces and one grandnephew.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herman L. "Robbie" Robinson, in 1992.

Family and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2000 at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main Street, Rochester, NH.

A Requiem Mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Anglican Church in Rochester with Father Scott E. McCleary as celebrant.

Burial will take place at the North Parish Cemetery in St. George, Maine at 2:30 p.m.

Charles Zerbinopoulos

DOVER - Charles "Charlie Zipp" George Zerbinopoulos Sr., 72, of 38 New Rochester Road died Thursday, May 4, 2000 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born Feb. 13, 1928 in Dover, he was the son of George and Bertha (Axworthy) Zerbinopoulos.

A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He was employed as a mechanic with Riverside Garage of Somersworth.

He was a member of the Dover Elks. He drove stock cars in the 1950s and 1960s

Survivors include his wife, Elaine (Beaudoin) Zerbinopoulos of Dover; four sons, Charles Jr. of Dover, Steven, of Kennebunk, Maine, Richard, or York, Maine, and Lance, of Milton Mills; three daughters, Elaine Lessels of Contoocook; Ann, of Barrington and Charlene, of Somersworth; three brothers, Nicklos, of Berwick, Maine, Colea, of Chelmsford, Mass., and William, of Agawam, Mass.; two sisters, Bessie Knight, of Beverly Hills, Fla., and Joanne Orr, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and 18 grandchildren.

Calling hours are 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2000 at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dean Panagos, pastor, Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Those who wish may make contributions in his name to the Elks Charity Funds.

Pierre Busschaert

DOVER - Pierre J. Busschaert, 80, of Langdon Place died August 10, 2000 at Langdon Place following a period of failing health.

Born July 9, 1920 in New York City, N.Y. he was the son of Pierre S. and Edna (Haag) Busschaert. Mr. Busschaert worked as a machinist for Kidder Press and Clarostat.

Members of his family include Stephen C. Busschaert of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Nina C. Morey of Woodstock, Conn.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Morey of Connecticut, Augustin Busschaert of Virginia, Angelique and Theodore Busschaert of New York, and one sister, Elaine Bahn of Advance, N.C.

He was predeceased by his wife Edith E. Cummings.

Family and friends may call Sunday August 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home.

Burial will take place at the Riverside Cemetery in Alton, following the service.

Raymond Lavoie

AMESBURY, Mass. - Raymond G. Lavoie, 75, of Amesbury, died Thursday, Aug. 10. He was a resident of Country Manor Nursing Home since suffering a stroke three years ago. Mr. Lavoie was born in Epping, N.H. on Jan. 16, 1925. He attended Epping High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy just after Pearl Harbor. He served as a commander in the American Legion in the late 1940s. He was the son of Theodore and Jeanette (Chevalier) Lavoie, of Epping, N.H. His North American ancestry extended back to 1655, in Montreal, from where his grandparents emigrated.

He retired from Hansen Engineering and Machinery Company where he was a precision machinist. Active in community affairs, he was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, and part of the Parish Kitchen Team. He served as Assistant Scout Master, for Troop 7, for many years. He enjoyed camping out with the scouts and cooking their meals. He was a member of the Amesbury Planning Board, and the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission.

He is survived by his five children and their spouses: Margery (Lavoie) and Dale Young of Amesbury, with whom he made his home for 17 years; R. Michael and Cecilia (Orszulak) Lavoie of Newburyport; Anne M. (Lavoie) Pepin of Salem, N.H.; Robert and Nancy (Larnard) Lavoie of Amesbury; and William Lavoie and his fiancee Beth Anne Collopy of Amesbury. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Melissa (Young) Szwed of Hartford, Conn.; Patrick, Daniel and Rachel Lavoie of Newburyport; Amy (Pepin) Rose of Newmarket, N.H.; Janelle Pepin of Salem, N.H.; Andrew and Ashley Lavoie of Amesbury; Virginia Lavoie of Amesbury and his two great-grandchildren, Paige Fortin and Kaycee Page of Amesbury.

He leaves a sister and three brothers: Rita (Lavoie) Labrie of Somersworth, N.H.; Theodore Lavoie of Plaistow, N.H.; Paul Lavoie of Milton, N.H.; and Girard Lavoie of Barrington, N.H.; a brother-in-law, Walter Langlois of Newmarket, N.H., and many nieces and nephews. His is also survived by his former wife, Marguerite M. (Leathers) Lavoie, currently a resident at Mariner Health Care in Amesbury. He was predeceased by his sister, Janine (Lavoie) Langlois, who died in 1993. Mr. Lavoie was also predeceased by his dear companion of many years, Yvonne Cote, who died in 1994.

The wake will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at Jutras Funeral Home, Amesbury. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, School St., Amesbury on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 9 a.m.

Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, Amesbury. Donations in his name may be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Building 9, Lawrence, MA 01843-9924, a truly outstanding organization, whose caregivers greatly eased the suffering of his final days.

Catherine McKeel

KITTERY, Maine - Catherine Pauline McKeel of Newburgh, N.Y., and Kittery, entered into rest Sunday, July 30, 2000, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Newburgh after a period of failing health She was 86.

The daughter of Dmytro Cheesman and Pauline Lysco, she was born May 9, 1914 in New Windsor, N.Y. She was the widow of Charles S. McKeel Sr. who passed away in 1969.

Mrs. McKeel received recognition and appreciation from the U.S. Military for sending care packages to U.S. servicemen serving in Vietnam.

Survivors include one son, Charles S. McKeel Jr. and his wife Eileen of Kittery; one daughter, Paula Lewis and her husband Clarence of Newburgh, N.Y.; one brother Andrew Cheesman and his wife Florence of Newburgh, N.Y.; grandchildren, Terry Poulin and her husband Rick of South Berwick; Patricia McKeel of Portsmouth, N.H.; Cindy McKeel-Davis of Kittery; Daniel McKeel and his wife Catherine of South Berwick; Kevin Seeley and his wife Patricia of Brookfield, Conn.; Karen Palen and her husband Frank of Pine Bush, N.Y.; Kent Seeley and his wife Tina of Duncan, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Roxanne Poulin, Nicolle and Sarah Davis, Kaitlin McKeel, Kevin and Patrick Seeley, Shannon and Dayton Palen, and Kaitlin and Kyle Seeley.

She was predeceased by one daughter Dolores Seeley of Wallkill, N.Y.; two brothers, Peter and Michael Cheesman and one sister, Anna Sylvester all of Newburgh, N.Y.

Patricia Morse

SANFORD, Maine - Patricia Ann Morse, 55 of Sanford died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born on May 5, 1945 in Rumford, and attended schools there. She has been a resident of Sanford for the past eight years.

Mrs. Morse will best be remembered for being a frank individual that spoke her mind. She was said by her family to be a "firecracker" of sorts. She loved a good card game and having all her grandchildren around her. Some of her interests included puzzle books, latch hook and watching and reading cartoons.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, David, of Sanford and all her family.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
