Charles Perkins

PORTSMOUTH - Charles N. Perkins, 54, of 245 Middle St., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at his home.

He was born in Portsmouth on July 12, 1946, the son of Neva May (Smith) Perkins of Portsmouth and the late William H. Perkins.

Mr. Perkins had been employed as a construction worker and as a maintenance worker in apartment complexes in the Concord area. He also had been a lobsterman with William Marconi.

He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God in Portsmouth. Mr. Perkins was an avid fisherman, hunter, and motorcyclist. He was a member of the Fish & Game Association in Pembroke.

Besides his mother survivors include five daughters, Melissa Perkins of Tilton, Tammy Swett of Concord, Amy Gouin of Concord, Jennifer Astbury of Portsmouth, and Charles Perkins of Sanford, Maine; five grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Emerton and Frances M. Gobbi both of Portsmouth; a half-brother, Martin Burns of Berwick, Maine; several nieces and nephews; and his long-time companion, Bonnie Coleman of Dover.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Beatrice Henshaw, Ida Clairborne, and Jeannette Tibbetts; a brother, Robert Burns; and twin grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Tuesday, 11 a.m. Friends are invited. Visiting hours at the Chapel are Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Crotched Mountain Community Care Inc., 30 Maplewood Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home.

Leona Wilson

WATERBORO, Maine - Leona L. Wilson, 99, of South Waterboro died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at the Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

Mrs. Wilson was born April 25, 1901 in Madison. She was the daughter of Lizim and Elizabeth Louzier. As a child she attended Madison schools.

Mrs. Wilson spent most of her life living in the state of Maine. She has been a resident of S. Waterboro for the past 10 years. She enjoyed spending quiet times at home knitting or telling stories about the past.

Mrs. Wilson enjoyed animals, especially dogs, and always dreamed of living on a farm.

Surviving are two sons, Roger of South Waterboro, Joseph of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great- great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Gilbert Louzier of Windham; a sister Hilda McDougal of Portland and several nieces and nephews.

Judith ‘Judi’ Beckett Baskevic

LEBANON, Maine - Judith "Judi" Beckett Baskevic, 58, died suddenly on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, while traveling with her husband in California. Born in Rutland, Vt., on May 5, 1942, she resided in Lebanon for the past 15 years.

Judith was very active in the Seacoast real estate business, serving on the boards of both Strafford County MLS and Strafford County Board of Realtors. She was co-owner and founder of Inglenook Estate in Somersworth and served as its general manager, owner/founder of Merlyn Real Estate in Dover, N.H., and served as a real estate appraiser for a multitude of businesses in the Seacoast for a period of 20 years.

She was a member of the Cocheco Kennel Club and was very active in animal rescue. Judith had a lifetime love for all animals, and there were always several underfoot.

Judith was also recently co-owner of TTLC Wireless of Dover and excelled in outside sales, a position in which she enjoyed very much working with customers who became friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Frederick J. Beckett, and is survived by her husband, David R. Baskevic; son, Stephen Baskevic and wife, Sharon, of Panama City, Fla.; grandchildren, Michael and Tyler Marie; mother, Norma Beckett of Somersworth; and sister, Annette Conner and her husband, Bill, of Somersworth.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time. A memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Judi Baskevic to Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Road, Dover, N.H. 03820. "Judi" will be loved and missed by all who came to know her.

Olida L. Blanchette

ROCHESTER - Olida L. Blanchette, 85, formerly of 5 Harrison St., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Rochester Manor in Rochester after a long period of failing health.

Mrs. Blanchette was born in Winthrop, Maine, on July 30, 1915, the daughter of Louis and Alphonsine (Gagne) Bernard and lived most of her life in Rochester. She was the widow of Alfred Blanchette, who died in 1996. She was a communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Rochester and was a member of the St. Anne Sodality of Holy Rosary Church.

Surviving members of the family include two sons, Roger Blanchette of Waltham, Mass., and Dennis Blanchette of Rochester. She also leaves one sister, Sister Lucille Bernard, s.c.o., of Lowell, Mass., as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Because of construction at Holy Rosary Church, a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Leo’s Church in Gonic on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at 11:30 a.m.

Friends may call at the H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester, on Monday, prior to the service, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

J. Robert Choate

HALIFAX, Mass. - J. Robert Choate, 80, a longtime resident of Rochester, N.H., and Bristol, N.H., died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at his daughter’s residence in Halifax, Mass. Robert was born on Dec. 22, 1919, in Boston, the son of the late James L. and Amber B. Choate.

Three children - two daughters, Bobbi (Roberta) Harman of Halifax, Mass., and Fawn Snyder of Glastonbury, Conn., and a son, Keith Choate of New Durham, N.H. - and four grandchildren survive him.

Mr. Choate owned Hydraform Products on Sampson Road, where he manufactured and marketed the Eagle stove.

Douglas A. Denton

ROCHESTER - Douglas A. Denton, 35, of 26 Isabelle Lane, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 9, 1965, in Rochester, he was the son of Donald and the late Lucille (Lavoie) Denton. Mr. Denton was employed as a supervisor at Salmon Falls Precision in Rochester. He was a skilled craftsman and a member of the Rochester Modelers Club.

Members of his family include his wife of six years, Heather (Norwood) Denton of Rochester; his stepmother, Arlene Denton; three sisters, Deborah Foss of Concord, Donna O’Brien and her husband, James, of Farmington, and Darlene Cardinal of Farmington; his mother-in-law, Mona Norwood of Rochester; a special niece and nephew, Beth and Joel Norwood of Rochester; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and his two dogs, Badger and Dreyfuss.

A time of remembrance will be held Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 26 Isabelle Lane, Rochester.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, County Farm Road, Dover, N.H. 03820 or the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, N.H. 03110.

Reuben Christopher Filides

ROCHESTER - Reuben Christopher Filides, 26, of 36 Royal Crest Mobile Home Park, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born on March 28, 1974, in Concord, the son of Peter Filides and Gina Carrozza Filides. Reuben had resided in Rochester and previously lived in Somersworth. He was a graduate of Somersworth High School class of 1994. He most recently worked as a flight scheduler at Business Express at Pease International Tradeport. He enjoyed music and played the guitar in a band.

Members of his family include his mother, of Rochester; his father, of Bow; brother, Jason Filides, of Somersworth; half-brothers, Joshua and Michael Filides, both of Bow; maternal grandfather, Carmine Carrozza of Woodsville; maternal grandmother, Shirley Carrozza-Hyde, of Zolpho Springs, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends may visit Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home.

If desired, donations may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, Country Farm Road, Dover, N.H. 03820.

Robert J. Johnson

ROCHESTER - Robert J. Johnson, 83, formerly of Lowell Street, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Riverside Rest home after a period of failing health.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in North Africa. He worked as a foreman with the Bartlett Tree Company for more than 30 years.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He enjoyed working with his hands and was creative in woodworking, producing furniture still enjoyed by many. Bob was a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E.

His loving wife, Harriet, predeceased him in 1978.

He is survived by his sons, Hayden W. of N.J., Robert and Walter; daughters Kelly Leslie of Rochester and Linda Jacoby; sister, Juanita Schulton; dear, longtime friends, David and Gladys Bostrom of Barrington; and 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Hayden and Bud.

A private family service will be held.

Arlene D. Keravich

ROCHESTER - Arlene D. Keravich, 39, of 9 D Cedarbrook Village, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was loved by everyone who knew her and was an inspiration to others battling cancer.

She was born in Ishpeming, Mich., on March 22, 1961, the daughter of Richard and Helene (Kramer) Couture, and had been a resident of Rochester for most of her life. She was a member of the Church of the Redeemer in Rochester.

Arlene was a loving and devoted wife, mother and daughter. She enjoyed boating, hiking, day trips and other outdoor activities. She especially liked taking her two daughters everywhere. She was an animal lover and was fond of her dog, Lucky.

Mrs. Keravich worked for over 15 years for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. As her battle with cancer progressed, her co-workers gathered together and surprised her and her family with an all-expenses paid trip to Disneyland and other Florida attractions. She called her many friends at Liberty her "Angel Squad," and she and her family will forever be grateful for their unending love and support during her long illness.

Surviving family members include her mother and father, of Middleton; her husband of almost 19 years, Jody, of Rochester; two daughters, Jessica and Jaimie Keravich of Rochester; three brothers, Ernie Couture and his wife, Hali, of Sanbornville, Ricky Couture of Magnolia, Mass., and David Couture and his wife, Chris, of Middleton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her special "other mother," JoAnn Thistle of Greenland.

A memorial service will be held next week, at a time to be announced. It is the family’s request that flowers please be omitted. A college fund for Jessica and Jaimie is being established, in care of Jody Keravich. Arrangements are by H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester.

Phyllis M. Mallen

PORTSMOUTH - Phyllis M. Mallen, 88, of 131 Woodbury Ave., passed away Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Mark Wentworth Home.

Born at 64 Pine St. in Portsmouth on Nov. 26, 1911, she was the daughter of Joseph and Julia (Brennan) Martineau. She grew up on the family farm on Woodbury Avenue in the Creek. She was a graduate of St. Patrick School, Portsmouth High School and the Portsmouth Business College.

She was employed for several years at the National Gypsum Co. and later went to work for the Probation Department of the state of New Hampshire, from which she retired in 1976.

She was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Church and the St. Catherine Womens Club.

She was the widow of Charles Raymond "Skip" Mallen, who died in 1986, and is survived by one son, Peter Mallen of Cohasset, Mass., four daughters, Julia Martin of Portsmouth, Ann Ashenhurst of Nashua, Katherine Mallen of Portsmouth, and Suzanne Hutcherson of Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren; seven grandchildren; and a twin brother, Lt. Col. Frederick Martineau of Ventnor, N.J. She was predeceased by two sisters, Irene Demers and Clarice Martineau.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at 1 p.m. Visiting hours will be at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, N.H. 03833.

Patricia J. (Duffy) Smallwood

Hampton - Mrs. Patricia J. (Duffy) Smallwood, 51, of Hampton, formerly of Lynn, Mass., died Thursday, October 12, 2000, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Thomas M. Smallwood, her husband of 21 years.

Born and raised in Lynn, she was the daughter of Jean (Lezzelle) Duffy of Exeter and the late William Duffy. She attended Lynn schools, was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School class of 1966 and had lived in Lynn until 1987, when she moved to Beverly, Mass. She had lived in New Hampshire since 1995.

Mrs. Smallwood had obtained her bachelor’s degree in business education from Salem State College and her master’s degree in business education from New Hampshire College. She was a teacher at St. Mary’s High School, Lynn; Marion Court Junior College, Swampscott, Mass.; and most recently Endicott College and New Hampshire Technical College, both where she had worked prior to her illness.

Mrs. Smallwood had recently begun playing the piano, and her hobbies included the computer and investment clubs.

Mrs. Smallwood is survived by her husband, Thomas, of Hampton, her mother "Jean" Duffy of Exeter, and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held on Monday , Oct. 16, 2000, at 10 a.m. from the Solimine Landergan & Rhodes Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Route 129), Lynn, (781) 595-1492, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Bolish Stankiewicz

ROCHESTER - Bolish Stankiewicz, 88, of 36 Hancock St., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Rochester Manor in Rochester after a long period of failing health.

Mr. Stankiewicz was born in Claremont on Dec. 13, 1911, the son of Ignacy and Helen (Gintoff) Stankiewicz and had lived in Rochester since 1942, moving from Exeter. He was predeceased by two brothers, Michelle Stankiewicz and Frank Stankiewicz as well as predeceased by two grandsons, John Kenneth Stankiewicz and Bruce Stankiewicz.

He was a graduate of Newport High School in Newport and was a retired shoe worker, working in the local factories of Dover, Farmington, Rochester and Exeter. After his retirement, he worked for the Thompson Tool Co. in Rochester for five years and worked for a brief period at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a lifelong member of the Rochester lodge of Elks and a member of the Rochester Senior Citizens Club.

Surviving members of the family include his wife of 62 years, Mary Stankiewicz, of Rochester; one son, John Stankiewicz, of Oneonta, N.Y.; one great-granddaughter, Emilie King; one great-grandson, Kobey King, both of Otego, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call at the H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester, on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary’s Church in Rochester, followed by burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, also in Rochester.

Alcide ‘Babe’ Turgeon

DOVER - Alcide "Babe" Turgeon, 91, formerly of Fourth Street, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center after a period of failing health.

Complete arrangements will be announced by the Wiggin-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover.

Marie Bernard
ROCHESTER - Marie Evelyn Gibson Saunders Bernard, 81, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Janice Tyler and Richard Tyler Sr., 16 Goosebury Circle, Rochester after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Bethel, Maine, on Oct. 31, 1919, the daughter of Frank Albert Gibson Sr. and Thirza Hickford Gibson.

Mrs. Bernard is survived by four children, Louise Saunders of Blowing Rock, N.C., Elmo Everett Saunders Jr. of Bloomingburgh, N.Y. Janice Saunders Tyler of Rochester and Frank Carlton Saunders of Masaryktown, Fla.; two sisters, Verna Gibson Day of Claremont and Roberta Gibson Pevear of Exeter; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Elmo Everett Saunders Sr. and Walter Bernard; and her sister, Jeannette Gibson Clough of Bethel.

Arnold Towle

MILTON - Arnold Towle, 74, of Charles St. died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

He was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Glenn.

Mr. Towle has lived in Milton most of his life. He worked in Hartford, Conn., as a construction foreman. He enjoyed four wheeling with all-terrain vehicles.

Members of his family include his sons, Joe Towle of New Durham and Thomas Towle of Milton; his daughters Jeanne Labrecque of Rochester and Carol Towle of Milton; 11 grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Welch of Attleboro, Mass.; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Welch.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. with calling hours being held one hour prior to the funeral in the chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home in Rochester.

Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 360 Route 101, Bedford, NH 03110.
