Gary Lauten
DURHAM - Gary Neal Lauten, a long-time resident of Durham, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at his current home in Newmarket.
He was born on July 21, 1940 in Mount Vernon, N.Y.
In 1987, Gary retired as an Air Force Officer and returned to do graduate work in Plant Biology at the University of New Hampshire. At the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space, Gary combined his experience in plant biology, interpreting satellite images and computer technology to participate in research in the health of forests worldwide. He further combined his experiences as an instructor in the Air Force to work with UNH colleagues to develop Forest Watch, a UNH outreach program for teachers in grades K-12 in New England schools. Forest Watch teachers learned to help their students learn science by collecting and analyzing data they collected in forests near their schools, thereby contributing to larger UNH research efforts. Gary later served as a scientist with Project GLOBE, a national and international program that incorporated activities and goals developed in the Forest Watch program. Throughout his years in Durham, Gary also served on the Lamprey River Advisory, the Durham Conservation Committee, and the Community Church of Durham Memorial Garden Committee, Board of Deacons and Board of Stewards.
Throughout his adulthood, Gary gardened with his heart, body and soul. During his twenty years in Durham, he lovingly created and maintained a beautiful, natural woodland view from every window of his home. More recently, he performed his same magic at his St. Augustine, Fla., beach house, creating natural dune gardens to withstand the strong ocean breezes. During off-seasons, he tended orchids in his greenhouse.
After his brain tumor diagnosis and operation in June 2001, Gary spent the first few months enjoying his family, friends and ocean view in St. Augustine and then returned to his new residence on the fresh water portion of the Lamprey River. Each day of his final months, Gary enjoyed the company of friends and family. Gary and his wife, Darien, extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to their many friends and family members who provided the love and support that made for Gary’s blessed comfort and peace throughout that time.
Family members include Darien, his wife of 37 years; daughter Kathryn Marie Lauten, Angelo Thomas Chinni, her husband, and their children Anna and Nathan; and son Frederick Scott Lauten, Heather Liddell Lauten, his wife, and their son, Cuinn.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Community Church in Durham. A reception will follow the service in Fellowship Hall.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation be sent to: Memorial Garden Fund, Community Church of Durham, Box 310 Main Street, Durham, N.H. 03824; or to one of the following foundations for brain tumor research and information: Musella Foundation, 1100 Peninsula Blvd., Hewlett, N.Y. 11557 or American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Suite 146, Des Plaines, Il. 60018.
Arrangements are under the direction of Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road, Lee, N.H. and Oyster River Crematory, Barrington, N.H.
