Marion Capen

ROCHESTER - Marion Louise Capen, 77, of 105 Whitehouse Road, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born Feb. 8, 1924, in East Rochester, she was the daughter of Clarence R. and Ruth A. (Corbett) Willey.

Her family (Willey) goes back to the mid-1600s in the Dover/Rochester area.

She was a homemaker and mother.

The widow of Robert E. Capen Sr., she is survived by two sons, Clarence E. Capen and Robert (Ricky) Everett Capen Jr.; three grandchildren; a nephew, John Labby and his wife, Natalie of Salisbury, Mass.; and a niece, June Hamel of Rochester.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Louise and a sister, Bertha A. Labby.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in Cold Spring Cemetery, Rochester.

Those who wish may make donations in her memory to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, 789 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Arrangements under the direction of Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, and Oyster River Crematory, Barrington.

Alice Clements

DOVER - Alice R. Taylor Clements, 96, of 90 R. Stark Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Wakefield Aug. 7, 1905, she was the daughter of William and Christi G. (McDonald) Miller.

Mrs. Clements was a homemaker and a resident of Dover for many years of her life. In 1997, she returned to Dover after having spent several years near her daughters in Ocala, Fla., Underwood, Minn., and Conway.

During World War II, she lovingly cared for as many as 11 babies, day and night, six days a week, enabling their mothers to work at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She had a keen knowledge of the everyday life in Dover during the early years of the 1900s. She had the wonderful gift of simple hospitality.

She was a former member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. In addition, she was a longtime member of Grange, most recently the Rochester Grange and the American Legion Auxiliary of Underwood.

Family members include two daughters, Ruth A. VanSickle and her husband, Homer of Rochester and Christina Pederson and her husband, Duane of Underwood.; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and her special friends, Clyde A. and Marie W. Walton of Dover.

Mrs. Clements was predeceased by her first husband, George Taylor, who died in 1969 and her second husband, Robert Clements, who died in 1987; a daughter, Shirley M. Lynch, who died in 1972; and four sisters, Gladys Quimby, Doris Ela, Audrey Ward and Rena Maloney.

Relatives and friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Graveside services will be conducted in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, Brownfield, Maine.

Leforest Collins Jr.

BERWICK, Maine - Leforest O. Collins Jr., 79, of 11 Collins Lane, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Rochester Manor after a long period of failing health.

He was born the youngest of 11 children on May 16, 1922, in Dixfield. He was the son of Leforest O. and Cora (Phillips) Collins. He was educated in Dixfield schools.

He served his country in World War II as a private first class, with Company I 329th Glider Infantry Regiment.

He was a Berwick resident for 38 years and worked as a manager of projects and maintenance at Davidson Rubber for 15 years, retiring in 1975.

His hobbies included woodworking and working on his home.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Olga A. (Lindau) Collins of Berwick; his children, Gary and his wife Pat, Woody, Michael and his wife Terrie, and Lee III Collins, all of Berwick; six grandchildren, Gary Jr. and his wife Tiffaney, Brian and his wife Kristen, Kevin, Mike Jr., Woody Jr. and Josh; and two great-grandchildren, Rylee and Gary III.

Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Roberge Funeral Home, 298 High St., Somersworth. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

John Cronin Jr.

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - John "Jack" A. Cronin Jr., 58, of Bauneg Beg Hill Road, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 11, 1943, in Lawrence, Mass., a son of John and Evelyn (Charpentier) Cronin. He graduated from Essex County Agricultural High School in Danvers, Mass., in 1960. He graduated with honors from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He served for the U.S. Army.

Mr. Cronin had a presence. He was fun, always sharing his smile and effortless laugh. He was one of those special men who loved people and everyone loved him. He spent his life doing what he loved - being with his family and friends. Golf and fishing filled his free times.

He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Cronin of Andover; Mass.; his wife of 11 years, Dr. Maria (Mota) Driscoll Cronin; a son, Todd and his wife, Michelle of North Berwick; a daughter, Piper Cronin of Sanford; two sisters and their husbands, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas (Patricia) Martin of Haverhill, Mass., and Mr. & Mrs. John (Carol) Nash of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandsons, Colby, Nicholas and Joseph; and a granddaughter, Moriah; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at noon at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 66 North Ave., Sanford.

Helen Enot

DOVER - Helen Carol Enot, 80, of 286 Dover Point Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at St. Ann Home.

She was born June 18, 1921, in Carteret, N.J., the daughter of John and Anna (Uhrin) Stima and moved to Dover from Westport, Conn., in 1986. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and the A.A.R.P.

She is survived by her husband, Jerome E. Enot; two sons, Jerome E. Enot Jr. of Justice, Ill., and Peter D. Enot of Winsor, Conn., a daughter, Susan C. Lord of Manchester; two brothers, James Stima of Morganville, N.J., and Joseph Stima of Edison, N.J.; four sisters, Elizabeth Cross of Sautu Nacoche, Ga., Theresa Kolodzijshi and Margaret Stima, both of Morganville, and Catherine Valentine of Freehold, N.J.; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Janise C. Fiducia, and seven brothers and sisters.

There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave., with the Rev. Robert Cole, pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.

Memorials in her name may be made to NH Catholic Charities, c/o St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave., Dover, NH.

Joan Fisher

SOMERSWORTH - Joan Marie Fisher, 68, of 203 High St., died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at her home after a brief illness

She was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Dover and was the daughter of Earl and Marie (Leduc) Scott. She was raised in Somersworth where she graduated from Somersworth High School. She also attended Becker College, Class of 1954.

She was a homemaker and an avid book reader.

Family members include her daughter, Mrs. Christopher (Tammy) Achorn of Gilmanton; four grandchildren, Christopher, Heidi, Tyler and Katelyn.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Terry Murray, who died in 1989, and her husband, William Fisher, who died in 1995.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South St., Somersworth, with Rev. Stephen Kucharski, pastor of Holy Trinity Church, Somersworth, as celebrant. Spring burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to a charity of one’s choice.

Emerentine Hamel

ROCHESTER - Emerentine "Peggy" Hamel, 93, formerly of Western Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Sunbridge Nursing Home in Rochester after a period of failing health.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Roberge Funeral Home, 298 High St., Somersworth.

Lewis Hersom

FREMONT - Lewis E. Hersom, 51, of Main Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 6., 2002, at the Exeter Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 15, 1950, in Exeter, the son of Myron L. and Florida (Laramie) Hersom.

He was raised in Exeter and was a graduate of Exeter High School. He spent the last 22 years living in Fremont.

He worked at Chemtan Inc. in Exeter as a lab technician for the past 25 years.

In addition to his wife of 32 years, Diane (Bannon) Hersom of Fremont, survivors include one son, Cori Hersom of Allenstown; two sisters, Aurise Grossenbacher of West Jefferson, Ohio, and Myra Marston of Exeter; two brothers, Eugene Hersom of Rochester and Edward Hersom of Durham; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Tobi J. Hersom, who died April 18, 1994.

A time of visitation with the family will be held Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Liver Foundation, N.E. Chapter, 88 Winchester St., Newton, MA 02461.

Beverly Hill

BELMONT - Beverly E. Hill, 68, of 14 Country Side Circle, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in the Lakes Region General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Manchester July 31, 1933, the daughter of Maurice and Bernice (McNay) Clark.

She had resided in several seacoast area communities of New Hampshire and Maine. Prior to her relocation to Belmont in October 2001, she was a resident of San Diego, Calif., for more than 22 years.

A one-time employee of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, she was employed by the U.S. Navy as a procurement clerk in San Diego until her retirement in 1992.

In her earlier years, she was active in the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Hill) Dagenais and her husband, David of Dover; two sons, Alan Raitt of Woodsville and Glenn T. Raitt and his wife, Kara of Belmont; five grandchildren; a brother, Colin Clark of Sanford, Maine; nieces and nephews.

There are no funeral services. A private memorial gathering will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Health & Hospice, 780 North Main St., Laconia, NH 03246.

The Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St., Laconia, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Doris Joyal

SOMERSWORTH - Doris D. Joyal, 71, of 2A Rita St., died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a long battle with smoking-related illnesses.

She was born in Dover Aug. 29, 1930, the daughter of Wilfred Poirier and Roseanna (Bellmore) Goodwin and has resided in the Dover, Durham, Somersworth areas all of her life.

She had worked at Tiara Footwear for several years, was a manufacturer at Eastern Air Device for several years and later worked as a clerk at Burger King.

First and foremost, her toughest and most rewarding job was being a wife and a mother. She enjoyed caring for her loved ones and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was a peaceful woman and an excellent cook. She was an avid player and lover of bingo where she made many friends. She enjoyed playing cards and also loved to travel.

She was a member of the Dover Senior Citizens Center.

Members of her family include her husband of 53 years, Edward J. Joyal Jr. of Somersworth; one son, John C. Joyal and his wife, Lee Ann of Somersworth; three daughters, Mrs. Gerard (Edwina) Fogarty of Berwick, Maine, Mrs. George (Donna) Chapman of Amelia Island, Fla., and Mrs. Bruce (Linda) Shannon of Barrington; 10 grandchildren, Judith A. (Fogarty) Poligni, Todd M. Mailhoit, Jeffrey A. Barry, Kimberly L. (Fogarty) Chase, Traci L. Barry, Amy L. MacDermittroe, Christina Judith Chapman, Alexandra M. Joyal, Tyler E. Joyal and Timothy Shannon; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene of Florida and Rita Roes of Ohio; one brother, Richard Goodwin of North Berwick, Maine; aunts, uncles, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Joyal is now at peace with her two daughters, Judith Joyal, who died in 1968, and Sharon Joyal, who died in 1993.

She was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters, Edward Poirier, George Poirier, Yvonne Sullivan, Mary Wilson, Gloria Poirier, Theresa Parker and Barbara Palone.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church, 577 Central Ave., with the Rev. Paul Gregoire, pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. Mary New Cemetery.

Flowers are acceptable and those who wish are invited to make memorials to the American Lung Association of New Hampshire, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.

Donald McLaren

ROCHESTER - Donald (Mac) McLaren Sr., 64, of Rochester, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester after a long period of failing health.

Mr. McLaren was born in Hopkinton on May 24, 1937, the son of Walter and Freda (Graham) McLaren.

He is survived by five sons, Donald and his wife, Stephanie McLaren of Rochester, John and his wife, Lisa McLaren of Berwick, Maine, Patrick and his wife, Carrie of Rochester, Paul McLaren of Rochester and Joseph McLaren of Rochester; two daughters, Joan McLaren of Beverly, Mass., and Lisa McLaren of Rochester; one brother, Walter McLaren of Rochester; one sister, Corin Bove of Massachusetts; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

There will be no calling hours or services.

Arrangements are under the direction of the H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral & Cremation Services, 177 North Main St., Rochester.

Evelyn Meisner

WORCESTER, Mass. - Evelyn V. Meisner, 92, of 101 Chadwick St., died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at the Life Care Center of Auburn.

She was born in Alpena, Nova Scotia, the daughter of James Isaiah and Sarah Selina Lohnes.

Mrs. Meisner worked for the Auburn School Department lunch program. She was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church and its Women’s Society; a member of the advisory board for the Order of Rainbow Girls; a lifetime member of Pakachoag Chapter 224, Order of the Order of Eastern Star; and earned 500 hours as a volunteer at Hahnemann Hospital. She and her husband enjoyed square dancing.

She leaves her family, Robert and Jean Meisner of Auburn, Dorothy Papazian and Bob Barry of Kittery, Maine, Doug and Darlene Meisner of Paxton, Mary Murphy and Kevin Pavear of Nottingham, N.H., Mike Murphy of Portsmouth, N.H., Tom Murphy and Jen Holloway of Eliot, Maine, Dona and Art Reardon of Eliot; and her great-grandchildren, Stacie and Jeffrey Meisner, Briana Murphy, Carly Reardon and Connor Murphy-Pevear.

She was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters. Her husband of 54 years, Gordon R. Meisner, died in 1983.

Martha Peters

DOVER - Martha Louise (Granfield) Peters, 41, of 5 Mineral Park Dr., and formerly of Nashua, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at her home.

Born in Lowell, Mass., on July 6, 1960, she was the daughter of Thomas Granfield of Nashua and Lillian (Herr) Granfield, who died March 20, 2000.

She came to Nashua at an early age and attended the Nashua school system. She graduated from Mt. St. Mary School, Class of 1978. She earned her associate’s degree in business management from Castle Jr. College in Windham.

A resident of Dover for the past five years, she was an active member of the Booster Club supporting the Dover High School track team and the Dover Middle School football team. She attended St. Joseph Church in Dover.

Besides her father, she is survived by three sons, Tim Granfield, a senior at Dover High School, John Peters Jr., an eighth grade student, and Cory Peters, a sixth grade student at the Dover Middle School; a sister and brother in-law, Debra and Doug Reardon of Greenville; three nephews and a niece.

Visiting hours will be Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley St., Nashua. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. in the Parish of the Resurrection Church, 449 Broad St., Nashua. Burial will be at a later date.
