SOMERSWORTH - Rita St.Hilaire, 80, formerly of 5 Parkview Terrace died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South St., Somersworth.

William Sampson

WASHINGTON, D.C. - William L. Sampson, 66, former resident of Dover and member of the Dover Police Department from 1957-66, passed away on Nov. 30, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

He was born in Portland, Maine, on Jan. 19, 1935, attended school there and served in the U.S.M.C. during the Korean War.

His marriage to Jeanne LaBonte ended in divorce.

He is survived by two sons, William A. and Timothy F. Sampson of Woodbridge, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Military Funeral services were held with burial at Quantico National Cemetery.

Mary Stevens

NORTH HAMPTON - Mary Fae Stevens, 68, of 27 Woodknoll Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at her home after a courageous eight year battle with cancer.

She was born in Auburn, N.Y. Oct. 4, 1933, the daughter of the late Carlton F. and Agnes G. (Butler) Bauer.

Raised in North Wolcott, N.Y. she was a graduate of Red Creek Central School, Red Creek, N.Y., Class of 1951.

She resided here since 1972 coming from East Penfield, N.Y. and worked as a home health aide where she gave her clients loving care for 18 years at Area HomeCare & Family Services of Portsmouth and also as a physician’s assistant at the North Hampton Family Practice for eight years.

She was an active member of the Advent Christian Church in Portsmouth where she enjoyed singing and sharing her marvelous gift of hospitality. She also served in various roles for the children’s Sunday School program including music and teaching. Many, many people will miss her loving cards and notes.

She was the loving wife of Norman A. Stevens for 49 years.

In addition to her devoted husband, family members include one son, Gary Stevens of Bloomington, Ill; four daughters, Joan Croston of North Hampton, Susan Amnott of Pensacola, Fla., Kristin Stevens of North Hampton, and Julie Broderick of Dalton, Mass.; 11 grandchildren, two brothers, Carlton C. Bauer and John R. Bauer both of Wolcott, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, who was loved by all, and devoted her life to nurturing her family and flower gardens.

Services will be held at the Advent Christian Church, Friday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. Helena Turner

ROCHESTER - Helena Theresa (Chapman) Turner, 92, of 45 Dodge St., died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at the Rochester Manor after a long illness.

Born on July 4, 1909, in Laconia, she was the daughter of William and Helen (Mitchell) Sister.

Mrs. Turner has lived in Rochester since 1931. She and her husband, William, owned and operated the Crystal Pond Ice Co. She was also employed at Clarostat and later retired from Davidson Rubber in 1974.

She was a member of the St. Mary’s Church, a foster grandmother at McCelland School in Rochester, a member of the Good Ole Sports and the Senior Citizens Club. She also volunteered at the Rochester manor for several years.

She enjoyed traveling, watching bowling, playing cards and country line dancing.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a good friend to all.

She is survived by her daughters, Elaine Hamilton and her husband, Carl of Rochester, with whom she lived, Katherine Crowley and her husband, Tom, of Whitman, Mass., and Kathleen Rouleau and her husband, Kenneth, of Derry; one son, Charles Chapman of Windsor, Conn.; six grandchildren, Suzanne Thomas of Rochester, Victoria Cook and Maureen Hudson, both of Kittery, Maine, Carrie Coty and Jayne Jackson, both of Auburn, Thomas Crowley of Whitman, Mass., and Sean Crowley of Los Angeles, Calif.; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillian Cote of Franklin; and step-grandchildren, Leon Chapman, Laurie Smith and Lesley Alex, all of Dover, Lorna Chapman of Rollinsford, and James and Susan Chapman, both of Connecticut.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Chapman; and a son, Leon Chapman.

Calling hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester.

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Pierre Baker, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in the Rochester Cemetery at a later date.

Helen Yager

EXETER - Helen M. Yager, 95, formerly of Hackettstown, N.J., died Dec. 2, 2001, at Langdon Place in Exeter.

She was born Feb. 22, 1906, in Washington Township, N.J. the daughter of Harry and Katherine Trimmer Dellicker.

She was a housewife and loved animals, gardening and being in the company of good friends and family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Yager in 1985; a daughter, Winifred M. Kingston who died December 2000.

She is survived by a son, Roy N. Yager of Hackettstown, N.J.; six grandchildren, Kathy Kingston, Nancy Kingston, Carol Mucci, Patty Mosher, Sally Kingston, and Ray Kowalick; nine great-grandchildren, Lexi, Lindsey, Molly, Erin, Megan, Alysha, Brianna, Arley and Kenneth.

Funeral service will be held at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High St., Hackettstown, N.J. on Friday, Dec. 7 at noon. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 a.m. to noon. Interment will be at Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadown, N.J. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the NHSPCA, 104 Portsmouth Ave., Stratham, NH 03885.

Margaret Whitehouse

DOVER - Margaret J. Whitehouse, 80, of 44 Hawaii Lane, Rochester, and former longtime resident of Dover, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, after a brief illness at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in the arms of her children.

Born June 13, 1921, in Lynn, Mass., she was the daughter of Harold and Jessie (Turnbull) Welner.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

A 60-year member of the Dover Baptist Church and former choir member, her legacy was her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her love and care for her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry S. Whitehouse.

She is survived by two sons, Robert A. Whitehouse and his wife, Elizabeth of Keene, and David J. Whitehouse and his wife, Mary of Rochester; one brother, Gordon Welner of Central Towers, Dover; three grandchildren, Peter Whitehouse, Susan Laird and Kimberly Mark; nine great-grandchildren, Anna, Julia and Emma Whitehouse, Stephen, Matthew, Christina and Timothy Laird, and David and Henry Mark; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends and relatives may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Dover Baptist Church, 151 Washington St., with the Rev. Kenneth Monahan, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Those who wish may make donations in her name to the Dover Baptist Church Building Fund, 151 Washington St., Dover, NH 03820; or to the Heritage Baptist Church, Special Needs Fund, 87 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Richard Burgess
MACHIAS, Maine - Richard A. Burgess 67, of Machias, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack while hunting on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001.

He was born, Jan. 20, 1934, in Berwick, Maine and was the son of Ralph and Clara Burgess.

Mr. Burgess served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He retired from Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Co. in April of 1999, where he was a vice president. He was involved with the Eastern Maine Development Corp., the Ruggles House and the Regional Planning Board. He was an active member of the Holy Name Catholic Church and was a member of the Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann (Swett) Burgess of Machias; a son, Mark D. Burgess and his wife, Ellie, of Machias; a daughter, Ann Morong and her husband, Don, of Enfield, N.H.; three grandchildren, Ryan Burgess of Machias, Dyan and Hayley Morong of Enfield, N.H.; and a brother, Donald Burgess of Berwick.

Mamie Jasiek

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. - Mamie "Mae" Jasiek, 77, of 1815 Sweetwater Road, passed away Dec. 9, 2001, at Grossmont Hospital after a sudden illness.

A former resident of General John Sullivan Way of Rollinsford, N.H., she was born in Westfield, Maine, on May 15, 1924, the daughter of Richard and Maude Kirkpatrick.

She was the widow of John Jasiek. She is survived by one son, John Jr. of Newmarket, N.H.; four sisters, Bernice Economos and Alice Chagnon of Rollinsford, Grace Robertshaw of South Berwick, Maine, and Shirley Miller of Hodgton, Maine; a granddaughter, of Lee, N.H.

She was predeceased by four brothers. There are no calling hours and a private service will be in the family lot at New Town Cemetery.

Gene Philbrick

SOMERSWORTH - Gene C. Philbrick, 79, of Colonial Village Somersworth, a former longtime resident of Kittery, Maine, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Rochester Manor in Rochester.

Born on Dec. 17, 1921, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Eugene E. and Hazel H. (Pierson) Baker and attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy in 1939.

She was a former employee of Harvey’s Bakery in Rochester. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Kittery during World War II.

She was an avid bingo player enjoying her time spent playing in Dover. She also enjoyed playing golf with her husband, while wintering in Florida. She was always ready for a meal of seafood out with friends and family.

Her family has enjoyed the hand-knit sweaters that she has made for all the generations over the years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Moulton E. Philbrick, who predeceased her in 1979.

She is survived by her two daughters, Marsha Melhorn of Kittery, Maine, and Nancy and Jim Stock of New Durham; two sons, Bruce and Elaine Philbrick of Hampton and Paul and Jeannie Philbrick of Battleground, Wash.; six grandchildren, Richard Melhorn, Brian Melhorn, Wendy Philbrick, Justin Philbrick, Brandy Gauthier and Adam Gauthier; and a great-grandson, Dezmyn, who was born in July.

A funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine.

Friends and family may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/U.S. Route 1 By-pass, Kittery. Family flowers only.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Homemakers of Strafford County, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH 03867.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Amy St. Laurent

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Amy Elizabeth St. Laurent, 25, of South Berwick, who has been missing since Oct. 21, 2001, was found Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, in Scarborough.

She was born on March 12, 1976, in Exeter, N.H., a daughter of Dennis James St. Laurent and Diane Elaine Simpson. She attended South Portland schools and was a 1994 graduate of South Portland High School.

Miss St. Laurent was employed for the past five years as a secretary/technician at Pratt & Whitney of North Berwick.

She was a member of the Aircraft Club at Pratt & Whitney and served as the club’s secretary. She was very fond of her cat, Alex.

She is survived by her mother, Diane Jenkins of Yarmouth; a stepfather, Donald Jenkins Jr. of South Portland; her father and stepmother, Dennis St. Laurent and Kathy Tuttle of South Berwick; maternal grandparents, Ralph and Dorothy Smith of Kittery and Donald and Elisabeth Jenkins of Bolton, Vt.; maternal great-grandmother, Sophie Homiak of Newmarket, N.H.; maternal grandparents, Walter and Elmira Hichens of Eliot; two sisters, Julie St. Laurent of Yarmouth and Jodi Lang of Lebanon; godparents, Richard and Madelyn Homiak of Newmarket; a special and loving friend, Richard Sparrow of South Portland; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews cousins and many friends that will miss her dearly.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Conroy-Tully, South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.

A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the chapel with the Rev. Eric Kelley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Amy St. Laurent Fund, P.O. Box 1414, Portland, ME 04104.

Ethel Aleksy
HALIFAX, Pa. - Ethel M. Aleksy, 75, of 139 Creek Drive, Halifax, died from natural causes on Monday, April 1, 2002, at Holy Spirit, Camp Hill, Pa.

She was born on Sept. 25, 1926, in London, England, the daughter of Charles and Edith (Moulden) Hurry.

Mrs. Aleksy retired from the Pennsylvania State Department of Labor and Industry.

She enjoyed ceramics and reading and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Retiree’s Association.

She is survived by a two sons, Charles Aleksy of Halifax, and David Aleksy of Kittery, Maine; a brother, Charles Hurry of London; and a sister, Edith "Pat" Hurry of London; three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard C. Aleksy, who died in 1983.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Hoover Funeral Homes Inc., Millersburg.

Services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Petresky officiating. Burial will be at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Donations may be made to the American Heart Assoc., S. Central PA Chapter, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, PA 17043.

Albert Davy Jr.

SANBORNVILLE - Albert F. "Albee" Davy Jr., 62, of 46 Davis Road, died Monday April 1, 2002, at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born Sept. 1, 1939, in Dover, the son of Albert F. Davy Sr. and Dora (LaBranche) Davy. He has resided in Sanbornville for the past 25 years, previously living in Dover.

Mr. Davy served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a microphotographer after 30 years. He was a former member of the Cocheco Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf. Among his other interests, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cribbage at the Sunshine Club in Sanbornville.

Members of his family include his wife of 24 years, Cynthia (Weare) Davy of Sanbornville; his children, Bonnie Greaney of Dover, Thomas Goodwin of Dover and Jeffrey Goodwin of Hampton; seven grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Bourque of Worcester, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may visit Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

The funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Dover.

If desired, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Ste. 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Robert Finch

HAMPTON - Robert M. "Bo" Finch, 49, of 20 Harris Ave., died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 8, 1952, in LaJolla, Calif., the son of Mary P. (Williamson) Finch of Stuart, Fla., and the late Francis E. Finch.

Mr. Finch lived in Florida for several years, moving to the seacoast in 1989 and to Hampton in 1990. He worked at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant in the health physics department. He was a graduate of Cape Fear Technical College in Wilmington, N.C.

He enjoyed boating and the ocean.

In addition to his mother, family members include his wife, Isabelle M. McCabe of Hampton; one son, Robert D. Finch of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one daughter, Tori K. Finch of Port St. Lucie; one brother, Francis E. Finch Jr. of Palm City, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Piscataqua Chapter No. 4, 19 River Road, Newington, NH 03801.
