James Fagan
WOLFEBORO - James M. Fagan, 51, of Pine Hill Road, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at his home in Wolfeboro.

Born April 29, 1951, in Rochester, he was the son of Irene (Grenier) Fagan and Donald Fagan. He had lived in Wolfeboro for six years previously living in Alton for 10 years.

Mr. Fagan was a partner with the Dinsmore Communication Company. He was a member of the New Hampshire Antique and Classic Boat Museum in Wolfeboro. He was a talented photographer, loved the outdoors, fly fishing, the rivers of the country, and he collected and refinished classic boats.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Parise of Wolfeboro; a son, Sam Fagan of Wolfeboro; and his mother, Irene (Grenier) Fagan of Dover.

Family and friends may visit Sunday, Aug. 25, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. followed by a service at 4 p.m. at the Wolfeboro Inn, 1812 Room, Wolfeboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, Massachusetts Chapter, 495 Old Connecticut Path, Suite 220, Framingham, MA 01701.

The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is in charge of the arrangements.

Lorraine Fogarty

PORTSMOUTH - Lorraine M. Fogarty, 48, of 403 Colonial Dr., died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at her residence.

She was born June 7, 1954, in Dover, the daughter of Anslem N. and Ida Marie (Vachon) Fogarty.

She graduated from Somersworth High School, Class of 1972, and received her associate’s degree from the University of New Hampshire, her paralegal certificate from the McIntosh College and a bachelor’s degree in human services from New England College.

She had lived in Portsmouth since 1986 and attended the Bethany Church in Greenland.

Prior to her retirement in 2001, she worked for Lucent Technologies as an analysis coordinator.

She loved traveling to Maine, especially to Lincolnville, Maine. She also loved the ocean and animals. She enjoyed her annual trip to Port Richui, Fla. She collected Fiesta Ware, which is pottery from the 1940s and 1950s.

She fought a courageous battle with cancer for 10 years.

She is survived by her friend of 22 years, Judy Arnold of Portsmouth; three brothers, Richard N. Fogarty and his wife, Patricia of Rollinsford, Gerard F. Fogarty and his wife, Edwina of Berwick, Maine, and Michael F. Fogarty of Milton; five nieces; two grandnieces; two grandnephews; and many aunts and uncles.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland, with the Rev. Dennis Marasco officiating.

Arrangements are by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the Seacoast Hospice of Portsmouth, 1039 Islington St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Roland Loubier

ALBANY, Ga. - Roland L. Loubier Sr., 77, of Albany died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany after a brief illness.

He was born in Waterville, Maine, on Jan. 25, 1925, the son of Arthur and Pearl (Leach) Loubier. He was a former resident of Dover, N.H., and Nottingham, N.H., prior to moving to Georgia.

He had formerly worked for the family business, the Dover Taxi Co., and later worked for the General Electric Co. on Somersworth, N.H., the Clarostat Manufacturing Co. in Dover and the Simplex Wire & Cable Co. of Newington, N.H.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 443 of Dover.

He was predeceased by his wife, Florence Loubier; and three sons, David Loubier, Jesse Loubier and Leon Loubier.

He is survived by five sons, Kevin Loubier and his wife, Lynne of Albany, Roland Loubier Jr. and his wife, Annette of Nottingham, Dennis Loubier of New Hampshire, Rocky Loubier of Albany, Dana Loubier and his wife, Carol of Madbury, N.H.; a daughter, Betty Jo Loubier of New Hampshire; a brother, Therman "Bud" Loubier and his wife, Shirley of Milton, N.H.; six stepchildren; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, will announce funeral services and calling hours at a later date

Charles W.H. 'Bill' Witcomb

DOVER - Charles W.H. "Bill" Witcomb, 81, of 6 Northway Circle, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Born Feb. 6, 1921, in Montreal, Canada, he was the son of Clarence W. and Elsie M.A. (Bates) Witcomb. He attended Bryant College for two years and Stratton Business School. He had lived in Hampton prior to moving to Dover in 1980.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran having served during World War II and the Korean War from 1942 to 1952. During World War II, Mr. Witcomb served in the U.S. 8th Air Force’s 306th heavy bomber group, completing 35 B-17 missions over German-occupied territory. He earned the Air Medal and the Five Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious service. All nine crew members returned home safely, despite heavy enemy flak fields, fighter planes, destroyed wings and engines.

Enlisting as an aircraft mechanic, Cadet Witcomb passed the five-hour test for ground school. He specialized in rigorous training for himself and crew, to be able to recover from dangerous situations. As lead pilot in a flight of six B-17s, he retired as a major and all crew returned safely because he had a praying crew.

He was a financial planner having worked for American Express/I.D.S.

He was a member of the Christian Coalition of American-Strafford County and a member of the Hope Community Church.

Members of his family include his wife, Frances R. (Ackerman) Witcomb of Dover; four daughters, Susan K. Clancy and her husband, Richard of Brewster, Mass., Nancy J. Witcomb of West Hartford, Conn., Sandra J. Lafleur and her husband, Thomas of Amherst, and Constance L. Leavitt and her husband, Richard of Hampton; four grandchildren, Jeffrey P. Kelly and his wife, Dionne, Jonathan Kelly and his wife, Tara-Jen, Kenneth J. Lafleur and Tracy A. Lafleur; two great-grandchildren, Shea E. Kelly and Clare M. Kelly; three sisters-in-law, Pauline T. Ackerman of Salisbury, Mass., Patricia R. Millett of Whitman, Mass., and Ruth C. Ackerman of Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, A. Kenneth Witcomb, in World War II combat.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to make memorials to the Gwen Spearing Scholarship Fund, c/o Hope Community Church, P.O. Box 1477, Dover, NH 03821-1477.

Donald Black
SOMERSWORTH - Donald Kenneth Black, 54, of 55 Union St., died Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Arundel, Maine.

He was born June 20, 1948, in Arlington, Mass., a son of Archibald and Mildred Hymen Black.

He graduated from Matignon High School in Cambridge, Mass., and attended Boston University. He had also earned an associate’s degree from the School of Life Long Learning.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and came to this area in 1985.

Mr. Black was employed for several years with Digital Equipment Corp. of Maynard, Mass., and most recently with Cabletron of Rochester.

A member of Family Christian Center in Berwick, Maine, he had been affiliated with the American Red Cross and the Civil Air Patrol. He had also worked in conjunction with F.E.M.A. and Civil Defense.

He enjoyed reading, working with computers, attending prayer meetings and education. Many of his hours had been dedicated to volunteering with the Seashore Trolley Museum and working with planes, models, photography and collections of various types.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, William Black.

Surviving are one son, Geoffrey Black of Rochester; one daughter, Jennifer Whitcomb of Rollinsford; his former wife and mother of his children, Irene Axelrod of Lynn, Mass.; a former wife of 27 years, Grace V. Black of Acton, Mass.; two sisters, Jean Sullivan of Somersworth and Helen Gagne of Dover; five grandchildren; and 64 nieces and nephews.

Bernice Geist

SANBORNVILLE - Bernice I. Geist, 82, of Route 109, died Thursday May 30, 2002, at the Kindred Hospital in Peabody, Mass.

Born March 27, 1920, in Barre, Vt. she was the daughter of Thomas and Sybil (Davenport) Roark.

Mrs. Geist has lived in Sanbornville for the past 26 years, she enjoyed arts and crafts.

Members of her family include her husband, Lincoln Geist of Sanbornville, her stepdaughters; Ursula Sandine of Mena, Ark., and June Horne of Milton; a stepson, Glen Runnels of Acton Maine; her brother, Ardon Roark of Sanford, Maine; her sisters, Ebba Borqkvist of Eliot Maine, and Annet Borqkvist of Kittery, Maine.

She is predeceased by her brothers; Thomas Roark and Arla Burke and her sister, Ann Peterson

There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the Milton Mill Cemetery in Milton Mills on Monday at 10 a.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

Howard Hecker, archaeologist, anthropologist

NEWMARKET - Howard M. Hecker, 67, archaeologist and physical anthropologist, died of cancer on May 26, 2002.

Born and raised in Brooklyn by his parents Irving and Ray Hecker, he graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1953, and spent several years living in Israel, where he was also a member of a folkdance troupe.

He also trained and worked as a mechanic. Upon his return to New York City in 1962, he attended Hunter College at night, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in archaeology in 1966, followed by a doctorate degree in anthropology from Columbia University in 1975.

In the early years he taught at New York University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Potsdam University, and the University of New Hampshire. He culminated his teaching career as associate professor of anthropology at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge from 1988-2000, where he was known as a dedicated, humorous, and demanding teacher who inspired many of his students to pursue further graduate work and careers in archaeology and physical anthropology.

Trained as a prehistorian and zooarchaeologist specializing in the Middle East, he has participated in excavations in Iran, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt, investigating the domestication of sheep and goat in Jordan, and documenting the diets of ancient working class Egyptians in Tel El-Amarna and the Giza plateau.

Among other things, he highlighted the culinary importance of pig at Tel El Amarna, something not represented in elite tomb and wall paintings, and found the oldest chicken bone in Egypt.

He also excavated several prehistoric and historic sites in New Hampshire and since 1998 has done the faunal analysis for several Mayan cave sites in Central Belize.

Among his many other interests were a love of tinkering and repairing things, baseball, travel, museums, theater and dance, and art. He was also strongly committed to public education, the use of reason, and the pursuit of social and political justice.

A resident of Newmarket since 1977, punctuated by several years living abroad in Egypt and Tunisia, he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara K. Larson, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of New Hampshire; his children, Marlayna and Adam Hecker of Newmarket and Orrin R. Hecker of Austin, Texas; his former wife, Bernice Hecker of Austin Texas; his in-laws, Arnold and Dina Larson of Rye; and several cousins.

A memorial celebration will be held at the First Unitarian Society of Exeter, 12 Elm St., Exeter, on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m., where individuals will have a chance to share memories.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Howard M. Hecker Memorial Fund at Newmarket Junior-Senior High School, 213 Main St., Newmarket, NH 03857.

Francis Knight

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Francis Z. Knight, 86, of 8 Emery’s Bridge Rd., died Friday, May 10, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H.

Born in South Berwick on June 12, 1915, the son of Charles J. and Lottie M. (Nowell) Knight and has lived here for all of his lifetime.

He was a graduate of Berwick Academy, Class of 1933, and had worked as a security guard at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and also had worked as a finisher at Prime Tanning Co.

Mr. Knight was a member of the South Berwick/Wells Christian Church.

The widower of Marjorie C. (Stevens) Knight who died in 1994, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley A. Chase of So. Berwick; a grandson, Jeffery A. Chase of Kodiak, Alaska; two brothers, Keith Knight of South Berwick and Hollis Knight of Port Orange, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Burton Knight, and a sister, Elizabeth Stover.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 3, at Woodlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Jepson, pastor of the South Berwick/Wells Christian Church officiating. Friends are invited to attend.

Funeral arrangements are by the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St.

Eugene Martineau

SPRINGVALE, Maine - Eugene J. Martineau, 79, of Springvale, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at his residence.

He was born in Sanford, Oct. 26, 1922, he was the son of Samuel and Mary Lavalee Martineau and attended schools in Sanford.

He was a World War II army veteran, serving overseas for 25 months in Alaska, the Aleutians and the Caribbean.

Mr. Martineau retired from The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1984.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arline Nichols Martineau of Springvale; a son Eugene A. Martineau and his wife, Julie, of Rochester, N.H.; a daughter A. Linda (Martineau) Lizotte and her husband, Alfred, of Sanford and Milton, N.H.; three sisters, Anita Taylor of Norwich, Conn., Elsie Lavoie of South Carolina and Delia Martineau of Sanford; six grandchildren, Susan Lizotte Johnson of Sanford, Scott Lizotte of Sanford, Stacy Lizotte of Sanford and Milton Mills, N.H., Shannon Martineau of Jacksonville, Fla., Bill Martineau of Shapleigh and Thomas Martineau of Rochester, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Brooke Lizotte Johnson, Cruise Hayden Lizotte Johnson and Trevor Corey Lizotte.

He was predeceased by sons, Eugene Wallace Martineau and William Brian Martineau; and a great-grandson, Corey Ryann Lizotte.

Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Heald Funeral Home 580 Main St., Springvale.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 66 North Ave., Sanford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Springvale.

Clinton Pendleton

BERWICK, Maine - Clinton L. Pendleton, 81, of Sunrise Hill Estates, died May 29, 2002, in Dover, N.H. Husband of Eileen (Briggs) Pendleton.

Arrangements will be announced by the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick.

Helene Stacy

LACONIA - Helene (Helen) B. Stacy, 80, of 233 Holman St., died at her home on Thursday, May 30, 2002.

She was born June 14, 1921, in Dover, the daughter of Isabore and Marie-Louise (Croteau) Bosse. She lived in Bethlehem for a number of years before moving to Laconia 33 years ago. She was the deputy city clerk for the City of Laconia from 1971 until she retired in 1983.

Mrs. Stacy was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Laconia. She was a lady commander with Star of The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of American in Littleton.

Survivors include her husband, Leo Stacy of Laconia; a son, Robert N. Stacy of Leominster, Mass.; a daughter, Evelyn Stacy of Laconia; four grandchildren, Ian Stacy and Leah Stacy, both of Leominster, Mass., and Kathryn Spencer and Nathan Spencer, both of Laconia; three brothers, Leo Bosse and Raymond Bosse, both of Dover and Normand Bosse of Windsor, Conn.; several nephews and nieces.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Laurent Bosse and Henri Bosse.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 31, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday June 1, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 30 Church St., Laconia. The Rev. Gary Kosmowski, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the family lot in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Laconia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Health & Hospice, 780 North Main St., Laconia NH 03246.
