Eva Gagne
ALFRED, Maine - Eva M. Gagne, 90, of 44 Cranberry Meadow Road, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Newton Center, Sanford, Maine, after a period of declining health.
She was born in Somersworth, N.H. on Nov. 27, 1913, and was the daughter of Alphonse and Julie (Dupras) Croft. She was raised in Somersworth, attending St. Martin Academy.
For many years, she had served as a ticket lady at one the movie theaters in Somersworth. She moved to Rhode Island in 1945. While in Rhode Island, she was an assembly worker for Corning Glassware with more than 30 years of service.
When Eva was 6 months old (1914) she was adopted by Alma Fortier (Nadeau) and raised by her. Alma died in 1956.
Siblings from the Nadeau family who predeceased her are, Lionel J. Nadeau, Richard A. Nadeau and Theresa N. Morrissette. Surviving siblings are Yvonne O’Brien of Dover, N.H.; Rita J. Levasseur of Berwick, Maine; Donald J. Nadeau of Somersworth, N.H. and Arlene N. Dupuis of Bedford, N.H.
Family members include two sons, Ronald Gagne of Jacksonville, Fla., and Gary Gagne of Saunderstown, R.I. She also leaves her grandchildren, David Gagne, Julie Galleshaw, Peter Gagne and Christopher Gagne; also five great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. Three brothers, Alfred, William and Edward Croft predeceased her. Her husband Rudolph "Duffy" Gagne predeceased her in 1965.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. in St. Martin Catholic Church, West High and Maple Street with the Rev. Aaron Pfaff, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H.

Joseph Markey
PORTSMOUTH - Joseph Markey, 86, of 1 Leavitt Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at the Edgewood Centre.
Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on April 4, 1918, he was the son of Joseph A. and Harriet Marie (Hanson) Markey. He attended Portsmouth High School.
He was formerly employed as an electrician in Shop 51 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring after 38 years. During World War II, he served as a civilian at Pearl Harbor.
He also owned and operated Markey Paving Company.
He was a member of St. John’s Lodge No. 1 F& AM of Portsmouth.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred Irene (Bickford) Markey, whom he married in 1938; three daughters, Marilyn Ecker and her husband, Harold W. Ecker, of Kittery, Maine, Joel Markey of Portsmouth, and Janice Markey and her husband, Thomas Hanson, of Tuftonboro; five grandchildren, David Ecker and his wife, Karen Ecker, of Portsmouth, Jolene Ecker of Epping, Joseph Ecker of Portsmouth, Elizabeth Ecker of Portsmouth, and Geana Seebald and her husband, Cmdr. Edward Seebald, of Orchard Park, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren, Jessica and Justin Seebald of Orchard Park, Markey Flewelling of Epping, Ivey Telles of Greenland, and David Ecker of Portsmouth.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Anthony Faria.

Constance McDonald
DURHAM - Constance McDonald, 90, of 38 Madbury Road, passed away Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.
There will be a memorial service, Sunday, Aug. 8 at 9 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Madbury Road, Durham, N.H.
Charles O’Brien
BERWICK, Maine - Charles J. O’Brien, Sr., 91, of Hubbard Road, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Feb. 14, 1913, the son of Timothy J. and Mary A. Shields O’Brien.
He attended Brooklyn area schools, and moved to Maine in 1947.
He worked for many years at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was predeceased by his wife, Yola Spaventa. He was also predeceased by a son, Ronald O’ Brien, who died in 1981.
Surviving are a son, Charles, Jr. of Boothbay Harbor; a brother, Edward of Hawaii; two sisters, Rita Alexander of Rochester, N.H. and Margaret Lesch of Lexington, Ky.; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date. Donations can be made in his memory to the American Red Cross, 889 Main Street, Sanford, ME 04073.
Arrangements are under the care of the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, Berwick.
August Perko
MILTON - August Andrea Perko, infant, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 4, 2004, she was the daughter of Michael and Beth (Webster) Perko.
Members of her family include her parents, Michael and Beth Perko, of Milton; two sisters, Amanda and Alyssa Perko of Milton; her paternal grandparents, Michael and Andrea Perko of Colchester, Conn.; maternal grandparents, Eric and Christine Webster of East Waterboro, Maine.
There will be no services.

Carl Sipprelle
RYE - Carl N. Sipprelle, 86, of 795 Washington Road, and formerly of Stratham, N.H., died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004.
He was born in Patten, Maine, on May 16, 1918, the son of E. M. Sipprelle and Velmont (Soule) Sipprelle.
He was a graduate of Woodsville High School, Woodsville, N.H., the Class of 1935. He received his B.A. in 1948 and M.A. in 1949 from the University of New Hampshire; earned his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in 1952. He taught psychology at the University of Tennessee, the University of Georgia, and the University of South Dakota, retiring in 1980.
He served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marian (Anderson) Sipprelle; son, Robert Carl Sipprelle of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter, Diane M. Sipprelle of Long Island City, N.Y.; granddaughter, Cara Ann Sipprelle of Los Angeles; sister, Geraldine Tine of Naples, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Webster at Rye, 795 Washington Road, Rye, N.H., Tuesday at 2 p.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Sophie Tomkinson
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Sophie A. (Darvid) Tomkinson, 87, widow of Thomas F. Tomkinson, of 1611 Elwyn Road, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at the York Hospital in York, Maine.
She was born in Berlin, N.H., on Aug. 4, 1917, the daughter of Stanley C. and Agnes S. (Mauzik) Darvid.
She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1937 and the Portsmouth Beauty School, Class of 1941.
She was employed at J. J. Newberry’s for 20 years, retiring in 1968.
She was a member of the North Congregational Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Martha Ann Jerge and her husband, Philip, of Rye; two grandchildren, Stephen Jerge of Stratham, and Lee Ann Gordon and her husband, Shawn, of Henderson, Nev.; three great-grandchildren, Josh Jerge and Kate Jerge, both of Stratham, and Brandon Gordon of Henderson; two brothers, Joseph Darvid of Easton, and Anthony David of Portsmouth; two sisters, Julia Huntoon of Limestone, N.Y. and Anna Darvid of Easton; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, John Darvid.
A funeral service will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Monday at 2 p.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours.

Arlene Warrell
ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Arlene Mae Warrell, 83, died April 20, 2004, at East Pasco Medical Center. She was born in Manchester, N.H. and had made Zephyrhills her home since 1982, moving from Eliot, Maine.
She was a retired hairdresser, a member of First United Methodist Church of Zephyrhills, a member of the Queen Esther Circle at the church and a member of the women of the Moose in Zephyrhills. She is survived by two sons, Stephen R. Warrell of Dade City, Fla., and Richard D. Warrell of Preston, Conn.; one daughter, Susan J. Whittemore of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Harry Morton Farnham of Houston, Texas and Stoughton Randall Farnham of Short Hills, N.J.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Merlin E. Warrell and a son, James S. Warrell.
Interment will be August 14 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, State St., Eliot, Maine.

Barbara Carpenter
BARRINGTON - Barbara L. Carpenter passed away Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004.
A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held for family and friends on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Barrington Historical Society on Route 9 in Barrington, N.H.
Elaine Chisholm
BRENTWOOD - M. Elaine Chisholm, 92, of Brentwood, died Aug. 12, 2004, at Rockingham County Nursing Home following a period of declining health.
She was born on April 7, 1912, the daughter of George and Mabel (Richards) Garver.
She graduated from Winfield High School in 1929 and attended Southwestern College in Winfield for one year where she was a member of Sigma Pi Phi society.
She graduated from Emporia State Teacher’s College in 1933 with a Bachelor’s degree in education. While there, she was affiliated with the Delta Sigma Epsilon sorority, serving as their president, and Kappa Delta Pi, national honorary scholastic fraternity.
She taught kindergarten in Kansas schools for nine years.
She was married to John Stuart Chisholm from Aspen, Colo. in 1942. He died in 1968.
They moved to Oregon in 1945 and raised two daughters. She was an active member of the Methodist Church as well as active in organizations such as the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS).
She owned and operated a private kindergarten in Salem, Ore. for several years.
In 1983, she moved to Portsmouth to be near her daughters.
She is survived by daughters, Janet Collier and Alison Hamilton of Portsmouth; sons-in-law, Richard Collier and William Hamilton; granddaughter, Anjanette Hamilton and grandson, Matthew Hamilton, all of Portsmouth.
She is also survived by grandsons, Doug, William, and Eric Hamilton; and great-granddaughter, Alison; great-grandsons, Keith and Doug Hamilton.
Claire Croft
ALFRED, Maine - Claire M. Croft, 92, of 44 Cranberry Meadow Drive and formerly of 301 Main St., Somersworth, N.H., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at H.D. Goodall Hospital, Sanford after a long illness.
She was born on April 25, 1912, and was the daughter of Amedee and Delia (Dusseault) Leclerc. She was raised in Somersworth, and graduated from St. Martin Academy
She had been a resident of Somersworth most of her life and moved to Alfred in 1999. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed with Tiara Shoe Co. of Dover, N.H. While in Somersworth, she had been a communicant of St. Martin Catholic Church where she had been a former member of the Ladies Guild. She was also a former member of the Golden Age Club.
Family members include two sons, Richard Croft and his wife, Carolyn, of Brookfield, N.H., and Roger Croft and his wife, Sharon, of Rochester, N.H.; a daughter, Joanne Croft of Alfred Maine. She also leaves a brother, Roger Leclerc of Somersworth, and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Jeannette) English of Lakeland, Fla. She leaves three grandchildren, Laura Eldridge, Michelle Mangiafico and Michael Croft; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Eldridge, Michaela Eldridge, Vanessa Mangiafico and Brady Michael Croft.
She was predeceased by a sister, Germaine Rawski, who died in 2004 and by her husband, Edward Croft, who died in 1980.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Martin Church West High and Maple Streets, Somersworth, with the Rev. Aaron Pfaff, pastor, as celebrant.
Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth, N.H.

Herbert Lamb
WOLFEBORO - W. Herbert Lamb, 93, of Rolling Wood Drive, passed away at Huggins Hospital on Aug. 11, 2004, after a brief illness. Known by his nickname of Herb, he was born in Middletown, Conn., on Feb. 7, 1911, to H. Allen and Hattie A. Lamb.
He was a descendent of Ethan Allen of Green Mountain fame. He grew up in Northfield, Mass., and Greenfield, Mass., and graduated from the Greenfield High School in 1928. He received his Bachelor of electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1932 and went to work as a factory engineer for Sylvania Co., in Salem, Mass., a manufacturer of radio tubes.
By 1941, he was manufacturing superintendent of Sylvania’s Lochhaven, Pa. plant.
During World War II he was manager of Sylvania’s plant in Huntington, W. Va., making radio tubes for the U.S. Navy used in proximity fuses. At the end of the war, he moved back to Lochhaven, Conn., and rebuilt Sylvania’s plant to make regular receiving tubes for radio and TV sets. Thereafter he successfully transferred to Emporium, Pa., in 1947, to start Sylvania’s division making television picture tubes and in 1950, moved the headquarters of that division to Seneca Falls, N.Y., where he was division Vice President from 1950 through 1961, as well as being responsible for the Mountain View Plant in California that made special receiving tubes for electronic counter measures for airplane protection.
In 1963, he moved to Woburn, Mass., as division Vice President responsible for making semi conductors. In 1965, he transferred to the New York office of Sylvania and General Telephone as a manager/vice president of a department handling new products and special projects, as well as having responsibility for OSHA compliance for Sylvania throughout the United States.
In 1974, he retired from Sylvania and with his first wife, Sarah L. Lamb, a native of Tuftonboro and graduate of Brewster Academy, moved to Wolfeboro. He married Sarah Lord on March 21, 1936, and they had a very pleasant life until she passed away on Dec. 20, 1986. He and his wife belonged to the First Congregational Church and were active in its operations. His wife was also very active at Brewster Academy where there is a dormitory named for her, and she established a scholarship fund for high school residents of Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro in the name of Sarah Lord Lamb Scholarship Fund. She was also very active in the D.A.R.
In 1975, he joined the Board of Trustees at Brewster Academy, as well as the Board of Trustees at Huggins Hospital. From 1978 to 1981, he served as president of Huggins Hospital’s executive committee for many years, as well as trustee, until 2001. At Brewster Academy he worked closely with Headmaster David Smith over the recent years of growth and improvement at Brewster Academy, taking great pride in its standing as one of the finest private schools in the Eastern United States.
In 1973, he joined the Board of Directors of the Wolfeboro Day Care Center, started by Edie Desmarias. He was on that Board for 19 years and worked on its move from the original building to its new building on South Main Street. He also helped set up the congregate housing at Christian Ridge, which was added to The Ledges.
On July 25, 1987, he married Mrs. Jeannette Asherman of Yarmouth, Maine and they established a home at the Sugar Hill Retirement Community in Wolfeboro.
In Feb. 1991, he was named Man of the Year in Wolfeboro by the Wolfeboro Lions Club. Throughout retirement, he remained active as a world traveler and made two trips around the world and visited a lot of countries. He also made special trips, such as a 1987 cruise up the Amazon River, 1988 Siberian railroad trip from Beijing, China to Moscow, Russia, as well as making a trip through the Panama Canal and two riverboat trips on the Mississippi River.
As a Rotarian, he did not miss a meeting in 38 years and attended conventions in Singapore, Buenos Aires, San Antonio, Texas, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Boston and New York. He was also a Master Mason.
He sailed around the three major capes of the world; North Cape of Norway, the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa and the Cape Horn in South America. He personally sailed a small boat around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. He owned a 40-foot-mast sailboat and for 22 years took friends on trips out its berth in South Freeport, Maine - as he put it, "always North and East, never South."
In addition to his wife, Jeannette, he is survived by his sister, Pauline Lamb Chesk of Greenfield, Mass.; and a brother, Nelson H. Lamb of Napa, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Lamb of Manchester, Conn.; and a sister, Helen Cornelius of Highland, Calif.
Calling hours will be Monday, Aug. 16, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home in Wolfeboro. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, South Main St., Wolfeboro, N.H. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Wolfeboro, N.H.
