Gladys Page

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - Gladys M. Page, 79, of Generous St., died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Dover, N.H., Oct. 30, 1924, the daughter of Burchell K. and Anna (Wood) Emerson, Sr. She attended Dover Schools, graduating from Dover High School in 1942. She made her home in Brattleboro since 1948.

An avid bowler, she bowled both candlepin and 10-pin in several area leagues. She was a charter member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine-Nile Court in Brattleboro, and was a 21-year member of American Legion Post 5 Auxiliary in Brattleboro.

She was the wife of Floyd N. Page, who died in 1970.

In 1948, she and her husband founded Page’s Dairy Bar in the Rollerdrome on Putney Road. The business was relocated to Canal Street in 1957, where they operated in until 1966.

She is survived by a son, Stephen N. Page of Brattleboro; a brother, Burchell K. Emerson, Jr. of Dover, N.H.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in Brattleboro. The Rev. Gary Andy, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Brattleboro officiated. Burial was in the family lot in Morningside Cemetery, Brattleboro.

Memorials in her name may be made to the Shriners Hospital, c/o Ladies Oriental Shrine, 11 Green St. Brattleboro, VT 05301.

Howard Richardson

HOOKSETT - Howard E. Richardson, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Concord Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Derry, N.Y., the son of Earle and Elsie (Read) Richardson. He graduated from Pinkerton Academy and Hesser Business College. He served as a T/Sgt. in the 468th BGVH ASAAF during World War II in a B29 Super Fortress as a radio operator in the China, Burma, India theater.

He retired from Raytheon after 25 years of service as an engineer business manager in the Hawk Missile Division. He was an avid outdoorsman.

Family members include his wife of 60 years, Connie (Clark) Richardson; a son, Glenn R. Richardson of New Port Richey, Fla.; and two daughters, Jacalyn R. Gauron of Haverhill, Mass., and Carole R. Stevens of Nottingham; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Marion Pounder of Derry; and two brothers, Robert Richardson of Walpole, N.H. and Raymond Richardson of Bluffon, S.C.

There are no calling hours. Graveside prayers will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Morrison Cemetery, Deerfield, N.H.

Richard Webb

RYE - Richard F Webb of 96 Sagamore Road, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004.

He was born in Exeter, N.H. on April 12, 1945, the son of Edward and Gladys (Lancaster) Webb. He grew up in Amesbury, Mass., graduating from Amesbury High in 1963. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1967. He was the loving husband of Mary "Vicki" Webb for 34 years.

An avid golfer, he was a member of Rockingham Country Club. He loved sports and coached many youth sports teams. He also loved simple pleasures, like mowing his lawn, outdoor grilling, and thoroughly enjoyed being a loving "Buppa" to his grandchildren.

Besides his wife Vicki (Hume) Webb, he leaves a son, Richard F. Webb Jr. and wife, Lisa (Lavoie), and their children, Carson K. and Kennedy V. Webb; two daughters, Kerri L. Webb and companion, David Palmer, and Shannon M. (Webb) Titcomb and husband, Alan. He also leaves his sister, Kay (Webb) Dionne and husband, Lenny, of Largo, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.- A private graveside service will be held at Central Cemetery in Rye at the convenience of the family. Family flowers only please, should friends desire memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Alma Browning
CAMAS, Wash. - Alma C. Browning, 95, formerly of Rochester, N.H., died Aug. 25, 2005, at her son’s home in Camas, Wash.

She was born in Westfield, Mass., on Oct. 17, 1908, the daughter of Seth Alton Capron and Edna Corson Capron. After her father died in 1916, she moved with her family to live with her maternal grandparents at Adams Corner in Rochester, N.H.

A graduate of Rochester High School, she attended Perry Normal School, now a part of Curry College in Boston. She moved to Pawtucket, R.I., where she was the director of Pawtucket Day Nursery and met her future husband, Kenneth F. Browning. They were married on Sept. 9, 1938. She taught elementary grades as a substitute teacher and wrote a weekly article for the local newspaper in Plainville, Conn. She also resided in Wheaton, Ill., Nantucket, Mass., Alameda, Calif., and Vancouver, Wash., before returning to the home of her youth in Rochester.

She was a member of True Memorial Baptist Church and the Rochester Historical Society.

Family members include two sons, Fraser Browning of Rochester and Arnold Browning of Camas, Wash.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. at the True Memorial Church in Rochester, N.H.

Albert Davis

ELIOT, Maine - Albert E. Davis, 80, of 22 Dixon Ave., in Eliot, died on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at his home.

Born on Dec. 19, 1923, he was the son of the Elbridge and Lettie A. (Shapleigh) Davis, he was an eleventh generation Eliot native, growing up and raising his family only a short distance from the home where he was born, in South Eliot.

He graduated from Eliot High school with the Class of 1941. He loved sports and as a young man, played baseball in the Sunset League of Portsmouth, N.H. and the Twilight League of Eliot.

In 1949, he met and married his loving wife of 58 years, Minnie Florence (Noseworthy). Together they made their home and raised their family in Eliot. A man of strong conviction, he constantly strived to help make his neighborhood and Town a wonderful place to raise a family.

He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. During World War II he participated in the invasion of Sicily, Anzeo, Italy and Southern France. He was a shipfitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring after 31 years of government service.

He was a longtime member of the Eliot Volunteer Fire Department and Naval Lodge 184 AF & AM of Kittery and recently received his 50-year pin as a Mason. He was also a member of Eliot American Legion Post 188.

An avid gardener, he enjoyed spending time in his flower and vegetable gardens. His family and friends enjoying the vegetables he grew throughout the summer. He enjoyed traveling throughout Maine, with his wife, especially his frequent trips to Machias.

He is survived by his loving family, who will miss him dearly, his loving wife Minnie; his daughters Joan M. Pelkey and her partner, Dennis Gaffney, of Eliot, Anita and Charles Bradstreet of Eliot, and his son, Thomas A. Davis of Kittery; grandchildren, Jeffrey S. Pelkey and his wife, Julia, of Eliot, Jonathan C. Bradstreet of Eliot, Jennifer Pelkey Silsby and her husband, George, of Eliot, Mandy Davis Lamson of South Berwick, and Kayla and Kendra Davis of Lee, N.H.; and his great-grandson who enjoyed spending time with his "Old Grampa" Justin M. Pelkey of Eliot; two sisters, Alice Davis and Bernice Muchemore, both of Eliot and their families. He was predeceased by his brother, Philip Davis and a sister, Arlene Barrett.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery Maine. Friends may visit with Al’s family on Sunday before the service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Brooks Memorial Cemetery with a time of refreshment at McPherson Hall on State Road in Eliot to follow.

Family flowers only, donations may be made in his memory to the Eliot Volunteer Fire Department, 141 State Road, Eliot. Maine 03903 or to the Naval Lodge 184, PO Box 184, Kittery, Maine 03904 .

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Merland DeButts

ROCHESTER - Merland C. DeButts, 61, of 281 Salmon Falls Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2004, at his home after a long illness.

Born Nov. 30, 1942, in Wolfeboro, he was the son of the Daniel and Velma (Wagenfeld) DeButts.

He had lived in Rochester since 1983 after moving from Ft. Devens, Mass. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years until his retirement, and after he began working at Thomson Center Arms in Rochester. He enjoyed being with his many family members, especially his grandson, Samuel. He will be sadly missed by his many friends.

Members of his family include his wife of 37 years, Judy (Harriman) DeButts of Rochester; his children, James DeButts, Dianne DeButts of Rochester, Daniel DeButts of Farmington, Kenneth DeButts of Salt Lake City, Utah, Rodney DeButts of Rochester, Kimberly Davis of Milton and Robert DeButts of Rochester; his grandchildren, Samuel Davis of Milton, Kayla, Danny and Austin DeButts of Farmington; his sisters, Golden Elliot of Wolfeboro, Delores Stone of Lewiston, Maine, Kim Spear of Rochester and Gloria Littig of Pace, Fla.

There will be no calling hours.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H. 03867.

Elizabeth Fernald

ROCHESTER - Elizabeth J. Fernald, 79, of 127 Eagle Drive, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Harold C. Fernald who died in 1989.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

John Overton

PORTSMOUTH - John Harding Overton, 85, recently of 928 South St., died on Sept. 15, 2004, at The Edgewood Centre, Portsmouth, N.H.

He was born in Babylon, N.Y., on Sept. 8, 1919, and was the son of Robert and Helen Merrill Overton. He grew up on Long Island Sound, developing his first passion, the love of the ocean, by sailing with his brothers and best friend, Jack Green.

He began his college career at Cornell University and he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he discovered another passion, flying. Subsequently, he became a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps as a pilot of B-24’s in the Pacific during World War II.

He married Henrietta "Tucker" Channer on November 28, 1942. They met while he was on military exercises in California and in Wilmington, N.C. A son and three daughters were all born in California.

He was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and corporate treasurer. In the 1970s, he returned to school at the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he earned his MBA. He taught in the business school at UW– Whitewater, while residing in Janesville, Wis. After moving to Stratham, he taught in the Whittemore School of Business at UNH where he retired in the early 90s.

Throughout his life, he gave his time and talents to the Episcopal Church. He was a vestry member, senior warden and treasurer of many parishes in California, Trinity Church in Janesville, and St. John’s in Portsmouth. He also was actively involved with Nashotah House in Wisconsin, and Seabury Western Seminary in Evanston, Ill.

He is survived by four children, Christopher and his wife, Valerie, of Perth, Australia; Christina Overton Peiffer and her husband, Tom, of Portsmouth, Hendrika Overton and her husband, Robert Pierce, of Kittery, Maine and Gretchen Overton of Kennebunkport, Maine. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jonathan and Merrill Peiffer and Andrew and Channer Smith; and a great–granddaughter, Zoe Swanson-Smith; and his laughing buddy and friend, Ruth Casto.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Tucker, and his brothers, Robert and Frank.

Service to be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Friday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes your donations be made to The Edgewood Centre, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Daniel Seavey

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Daniel Leonard Seavey, 63, of Christiansburg, formerly of Rochester, N.H., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Alexina Seavey; brother, Richard Seavey; sisters, Phyllis Hanratty and Arlene Hamel and stepdaughter, Jennifer Collins.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Nuckols Seavey of Christiansburg; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Ray Tuck; grandchildren, Abi and Nathaniel Tuck; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Stella Seavey of Sanford, Maine; James and Jane Seavey of Pensacola, Fla.; sisters, Francine Dion, Adele Timmins, both of Rochester; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Diane Nuckols of Christiansburg; Carolyn and Roger Ratcliffe of Pilot; Patty and Billy Dove of Christiansburg, Edward Nuckols, Jr. of Blacksburg and companion, Missi Neff; mother-in-law, Hollie Nuckols of Christiansburg; father-in-law, Edward Nuckols, Sr. of Heaters, W. Va.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 at the Horne Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow visitation at 1 p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Reggie Tuck officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.

Eugene Andrews
GONIC - Eugene Blake Andrews, 69, of 11 Main St., Apartment C, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at his home.

Born April 13, 1935, in Rochester, N.H., he was the son of Carroll and Edna (Blake) Andrews.

He had lived in Rochester all of his life. He spent nine years in the Army National Guard and was a custodian at Spaulding High School. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, taking scenic drives, and loved striper fishing in the Piscataqua River.

Members of his family include his wife, Florence Andrews, of Gonic; son, William Bushway Sr. and his wife, Rebecca, of Norfolk, Va.; three daughters, Marie Maas and her husband, Ralf, of Florida, Kathryn Ahrens and husband, Lou, of Florida, and Cindy Bushway and her significant other, Kevin Schrougham, of Florida; niece, Nancy Horton of Brunswick, Maine; nephew, Richard Keegan of Bath, Maine; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; one great-great-nephew; and four great-great nieces; brother and sister-in-law, Gary Golledge and his wife, Carol.

He was predeceased by one brother, Donald Andrews; and one sister, Geraldine Keegan.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of the R. M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H. 03867.

Eunice Copp

EXETER - Eunice E. Copp, 84, of 29 Winter St., Exeter, died after a long illness, Oct. 13, 2004, at Sunbridge of Exeter.

A native of Boston, Mass., she was born April 26, 1920, the daughter of William and Mabel (Keyes) DeWolfe.

She grew up in Quincy, Mass., where she graduated from high school, Class of 1938. She attended Mass College of Art and the University of New Hampshire.

She taught art classes at the Exeter Rec. Dept. for many years and was a member of the Seacoast & Durham Art Associations. She had many area art shows, especially at Exeter Hospital.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Legion.

She leaves her husband, Alfred Copp, of 29 years, from Exeter; her sons and daughters, William Tappan of New Castle, Richard Tappan of Barrington, Barbara Colvin of Exeter, Julie Carr of Epping, Robin Currier of Brentwood, Brenda Babylon of Hampstead, Blaine Copp of Hampton, Lynne Copp of Hampstead, Lisa Roy of Exeter, and Larry Copp of Exeter; her sister, Barbara DeWolfe of Exeter; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Fri., Oct. 15 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Exeter First Baptist Church.

The Rev. Jamie Moynihan, will officiate the service. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. A reception will follow at Langdon Place on Hampton Road in Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Exeter First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 2 Spring St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Joan Coury

DOVER - Joan A. Coury, 78, of 12 Morin St., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, after a long illness surrounded by her family.

She was born in Dover, March 5, 1926, the daughter of Wilfred and Albea (Carrier) St. Laurent.

She attended Dover schools and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.

She worked many years at Clarostat Mfg. Co., retiring in 1986, due to illness. In 1987, she was very fortunate to receive a liver transplant at New England Medical Center in Boston, Mass.

She enjoyed ice skating, dancing, and her beloved dog, Chrissie. Most recently, she especially enjoyed her monthly visits to Portland, Maine to visit her daughter and her husband and time spent with Vicki Blair, her friend and companion.

She will be deeply missed by her beloved husband of 55 years, Louis, of Dover; their daughter, Marylou and her husband, Jack Robinson, both of Portland, Maine; her sisters, Bernadette Filiau, Madeleine Gagnon and her husband, Jack; her brother, Jerry St. Laurent and his wife, Anita; her sister-in-law, Libby Connolly all of Dover; as well as all her nieces and nephews.

There are no visiting hours. A Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church (corner of Chestnut and Third Sts.), with the Rev. Fritz Cerullo, O.S.A. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to make memorials in her name to St. Jude Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.

Joan’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staffs at Coast Bus Services, Seacoast and Somersworth Dialysis, Dr. Decker and most recently Your V.N.A. of Rochester for the excellent care she received over the years.

Funeral arrangements are by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.
