Calvin Smith
DOVER - Calvin N. "Butch" Smith Jr., 46, died at Lahey Clinic on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, surrounded by his family and their love.
He was born on June 6, 1957 in Holyoke, Mass., the oldest child of Calvin N. Smith Sr. and Pauline (Benoit) Smith.
He was a graduate of Dover High School and lived for several years in Las Vegas, Nev., before returning home to Dover, where he lived out his life.
A self-employed carpenter, he and his brother did business for several years under the name of A&S Construction.
He was an avid NASCAR fan, enjoyed cooking on the grill and especially loved spending time with his nieces and nephews.
He was a gentle and loving man to his family and many friends and his death will leave a void in many hearts.
Survivors include his mother, Pauline Smith of Somersworth; three brothers, David W. Smith and his wife, Melinda, Paul S. Smith and his wife, Darlene, and Donald M. Smith, all of Dover; one sister, M. Elizabeth Upton and her husband, Tom of Lebanon, Maine; 10 nieces and nephews; and a lifelong friend, Paula Joyce and her husband, Stillman of North Haven, Maine.
He was predeceased by a sister, Donna Marie in 1964; and his grandfather, Napoleon Benoit in 1998.
A private family service will be held today. Friends are invited to celebrate his life at a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Berwick Full Gospel Church, 75 Sawmill Hill Road, (corner of Route 236 and Sawmill Hill Road), Berwick, Maine, with the Rev. Varney, pastor, officiating. The family requests no flowers.

Carroll Varney
DOVER - Carroll H. Varney, 67, of 14 Old Stage Road, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
Carroll Varney
Born in Madbury on Oct. 12, 1935, he was the son of Carroll C. and Marion E. (Norman) Varney.
Mr. Varney was a retired, self-employed excavating contractor and had also been employed by Atlantic Terminal.
He was a lifelong resident of Dover, a member of the Lee Snow Travelers Club, and enjoyed motorcycles, four-wheeling, traveling and fishing. He enjoyed splitting wood and plowing snow in winter months.
He had attained his goal of visiting all 50 states.
He served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard.
Family members include his wife, Louise (Scrosati) Varney of Dover, whom he married on May 29, 1954; two daughters, Carol L. MacIver of Norway, Maine, and Susan C. Schultz of Northwood; one son, Christopher H. Varney of Lakeworth, Fla.; a sister, Florence Lavoie of Berlin; four grandchildren, Cory Schultz of Northwood, Katie MacIver of Barrington, Bryan MacIver of Dover and Haley Schultz of Northwood; nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends.
He was predeceased by a son, Vern A. Varney in 1961; a brother, Vern V. Varney; two sisters, Ruth Chapman and Martha Campbell; and a longtime friend, Elliott H. Felker.
Relatives and friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. The funeral will be conducted in the funeral home at 10 a.m. on Wednesday with the Rev. John Loughane, administrator of St. Charles Church, officiating. Burial will follow in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford.

Eleanor Wildes
DOVER - Eleanor Emerson Wildes, 90, formerly of Rainbow Drive, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.
Born in Madison on July 28, 1913, she was the daughter of Leslie and Maude (King) Emerson.
She moved to Dover in 1927, graduating from Dover High School, Class of 1933.
Prior to her retirement, she worked at the General Electric Co. in Somersworth for more than 30 years and was an active member of the GEEA.
She enjoyed many activities, bowling, music, dancing and people.
She was a former member of the Rebekah’s, having served as noble grand; a member of the AARP, having served as president for one year; and a member of the Back River Community Club.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard J. Wildes, in November 1967; five brothers, Burchell K. Emerson Sr. and Leland Emerson, both from Dover, Chellis Emerson of Conway, Erlon Emerson of Westwood, Mass., and Francis Emerson of Tilton.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Tasker Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, Maine.

Thomas Green
SOMERSWORTH - Thomas George Green, 68, of 67 Colonial Park died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at home following a courageous battle with emphysema and diabetes.
He was born July 30, 1935, in Barrington, the son of Harold and Margaret (Ellison) Green. He was a veteran in the U.S. Air Force who was stationed in England during the mid-1950s. He was a longtime employee of the city of Dover as general foreman of the Water Department, retiring in 1992.
He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was very outgoing and amusing to be around, and he loved nature. He admired his classic 1950 Mercs, telling stories of his younger years and playing cards. His poodle, Jackson, kept him company during his illness. He faithfully read his Bible and prayed every day for everyone to be happy and healthy, and he had a wonderful outlook on life.
He is survived by his wife, Serena (Fernald) Green, to whom he was happily married for 44 years; three sons, Ed Green of Rochester, Raymond Green of Dover and Toby Green of Alton; a daughter, Mary Thomas of Newington; two brothers, George Green of Somersworth and Bob McKay of Barrington; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Loretta Lamb.

BARRINGTON - Constance A. Neilsen, 81, of Barrington passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Riverside Rest Home in Dover.

Doris Ashton
OSSIPEE - Doris Mae (Whitcomb) Ashton, 81, of 10 Elm St., Ossipee, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in an automobile accident on Route 28 in Wolfeboro.
She was born in Yakima, Wash., on Oct. 13, 1922. She grew up and was married in Waltham, Mass. She moved to East Rochester in 1953, where her husband, Donald Ashton, worked for General Electric Co. They moved to their summer home on Duncan Lake in Ossipee in 1987, where he died in 1992.
She was a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts with a bachelor of arts degree in zoology in 1944, and Salem State College in Massachusetts with a master of education degree in 1970. She taught in high schools and in North Shore Community College, Beverly, Mass., from 1965 to 1985.
Joining the First Congregational Church of Center Ossipee in 1988, she loved to sing in the choirs, perform in the handbell choir and serve wherever she could be of help. She held officers or board positions with many other organizations over the years, such as Ossipee Historical Society, Ossipee Concerned Citizens, New Hampshire Old Graveyard Association, Friends of the Ossipee Public Library, Adult Tutorial Programs, Mt. Holyoke Alumna Association, Ossipee Old Home Week Committee, Pequawket Historical League and Lakes Region Audubon Society. She was elected to the cemetery commission of the Town of Ossipee, and was serving as chairman reporting to the Board of Selectmen.
Surviving family members are a brother, Richard Whitcomb of Burlington, Vt.; a sister, Suzanne (Whitcomb) Hays of Lexington, Mass.; a son, Donald Bruce Ashton of Friendswood, Texas; a daughter, Janet (Ashton) Brodie of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; and a daughter, Nancy Jean Ashton of Concord.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in the old First Congregational Church building, 50 Route 16B, (Old Route 16), Center Ossipee, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Leon Cone, associate pastor for seniors, officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the Parish Hall next door. Lord Funeral Home, Center Ossipee, assisted the family and church with arrangements.

Eliott Bisson
ROLLINSFORD - Eliott J. Bisson, 93, formerly of 428 Washington St., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center after a period of failing health.
Born in Eliot, Maine, on June 20, 1910, he was the son of Amedee and Georgianna (Gagne) Bisson. He was predeceased by his parents and all of his siblings, Emelia, Clara, Mary, Margaret, Lucien, Edmond, Robert, Albert, Paul and Wilfred.
He married Margaret Labrecque in 1939. They were married for 46 years and were blessed with two children, Elaine and Gary. His wife, Margaret, died in 1986 and his son, Gary, died in 1993.
For more than 55 years, "Bis," as he was affectionately called by most of his friends and customers, operated Bisson’s Barber Shop on Main Street in South Berwick, Maine.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.
Upon his return, he was very active in the American Legion Post 47 of Rollinsford, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Disabled American Veterans Post, both of South Berwick.
He spent his entire life in the Rollinsford-South Berwick area and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Bill Meagher, of Acton, Mass.; two granddaughters, Janet P. of Acton, and Michelle A. of Merrimack; his daughter-in-law, Beverly, of Davenport, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Church, Church Street, Rollinsford with the Rev. Tom Coover, pastor, as celebrant. Internment will follow in the family lot in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford.

Dorothy Christiansen
DOVER - Dorothy (Sherwin) Christiansen, 83, widow of David W. Christiansen Sr., died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Langdon Place of Dover after a period of declining health.
Born in Attleboro, Mass., on June 19, 1920, she was the daughter of Ralph and Alice (Winslow) Sherwin. She grew up in Bradford, Mass., graduating from Haverhill, Mass., High School in 1938. In June of this year, she was able to attend the school’s 65th Class Reunion, happily remembering old times with many of her school friends. She later graduated from the Wilfrid Academy of Hairdressing in Boston.
A few years after her marriage, she and her husband moved to Dover, living in the same home on Wilbrod Avenue for 50 years.
She was a very familiar face at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, where she was a volunteer for 40 years. She was recognized this year for her service to the community by Sen. Judd Gregg and Gov. Craig Benson.
The Dover Public Library was a source of great enjoyment for her, and she will be remembered for bringing bouquets of flowers from her garden to greet visitors at the circulation desk every summer for many years.
Members of her family include her daughter, Nancy Ekola and her husband, Ken, of Dover; a son, David W. Christiansen Jr. of Barrington; granddaughters, Stephanie Ekola of Hudson, and Christina Hallowell of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, who died in 1990; a brother, Commander Robert Sherwin; and a granddaughter, Deborah.
Family and friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with Dr. David Slater of the First Parish Congregational Church officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover.

Jon Moore
DOVER - Jon B. Moore, 68, of 52 Piscataqua Road, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, Nov. 29 2003, with his family by his side.
Born in Dover on April 24, 1935, he was the son of Edward R. and Kathryn (Smith) Moore.
He was a lifelong resident of Dover. He graduated from Dover High School in 1953. After a tumultuous courtship that began in 1950, he married Nancy Woodward in 1955. It was said that it wouldn’t last a year. Lo and behold, to everyone’s amazement, 48 years later they were still going strong!
He began employment with the State of New Hampshire Highway Design in February of 1956. He was the party chief of a survey crew and saw the beginning and ending of the construction of many of the state’s highways.
In 1986, he was promoted to area supervisor, overseeing the work of several survey crews. He retired in 1998 after a rewarding 42-year career. He was a long-time member of The Back River Community Club. He enjoyed baseball and the Red Sox. He played for Shaw’s Construction’s fast-pitch softball team and was part of two state championships. He served as president and tournament director of the 1978-1979 Babe Ruth All-Stars.
For years, his favorite pastime was camping in the White Mountains, where he and his wife made many lifelong friends.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy; his father, Edward Moore, of Barrington; three sons, Jeffrey Moore of Barrington, Eric Moore and his wife, Sherri, of Dover, Christopher Moore of Dover; two daughters, Kimberly Buinicky and her fiancé, Dennis (Butch) Emerson, of Rochester, Melissa Moore and her husband, Roland Doyon, of Dover; one brother, Kenneth Moore and his wife, Patricia, of Dover; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother, Kathryn; and his close friends, Thomas and Edith Leighton.
Friends may call Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road (Route 4) Lee, N.H. The funeral will be held at Purdy Memorial Chapel on Wednesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tom F. Clark III, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.

Josephine Osborne
HAMPTON - Josephine E. Osborne, 80, formerly of 63 Barbour Road, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Haven Health Center at Seacoast after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Boston on May 13, 1923, the daughter of Ina R. (Mack) Lane and Lewis Osborne.
She attended Centre School in Hampton and later worked as a domestic, cleaning local homes.
She enjoyed walking, animals and relating to people.
She is survived by her sister, Christine L. Judkins of Exeter; her niece, Dolly Nickerson and her husband, Lloyd, of Nottingham; their children, Christopher Nickerson, Nedina Willett, both of Exeter, Heather L. Nickerson of Rochester; cousins and many dear friends.
Services will be held at Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
George Shevelin
PORTSMOUTH - George Raymond Shevelin, 88, of 36 Spring St., a resident of Portsmouth for 55 years, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at Kennebunk Nursing Home, Kennebunk, Maine after a brief period of failing health.
Born in South Berwick, Maine, on Dec. 28, 1914, he was the oldest son of George D. and Mary Shevelin.
He married Emma M. LaBrecque in 1942. He was a World War II submarine veteran. He served aboard the USS Dragonnet. He was past state commander of the N.H. and Maine chapters of the Submarine Veterans of World War II.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal mechanic.
He was predeceased by his wife, Emma M. Labrecque, who died in 1971, and daughter, Enid Shevelin Pearsall, who died in 2003.
Survivors include two sisters of South Berwick, Maine, Eleanor Smith and Anna White; one brother, Mark Shevelin, of Florida; two sons, Dennis Shevelin of Dover and Wayne Shevelin of Reseda, Calif.; and one daughter, Joyce Shevelin Hammer of Foley, Ala. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and his dear friend of many years, Barbara Donnell of York, Maine.
Thomas Wells
DOVER - Thomas Robert Wells, 84, of 91 Belknap St., died at his residence on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, after a prolonged illness.
