Vernon Atkins
ROCHESTER - Vernon Porter Atkins, 89, of 312 Salmon Falls Road, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a period of failing health.

He was born on April 10, 1914, in Twin Falls, Idaho, the son of James P. and Alma (VanMeder) Atkins. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He had resided in Rochester for the past 65 years and had worked as an engineer for Public Service of New Hampshire.

Members of his family include his wife, Vera Lillian (Dustin) Atkins of Rochester; one son, James P. and his wife, Leslie, of Lutz, Fla.; daughter, Judy L., and her husband, Greg D. Smith, of Rochester; two grandsons, Matthew and his wife, Marlene Atkins, of Prospect, Conn., and Benjamin Stevens of Ft. Collins, Colo.; two granddaughters, Kimberly and her husband, Brian Belmonte, of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; Christine and her husband, Mark Rapoza, of New Durham; and three great-grandchildren, Emily Belmonte, Christopher and Elizabeth Atkins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Virge Atkins.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, Autumn Street, Rochester, NH 03867.

Arrangements are under the care of R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester, N.H.

Iris Borden

ELIOT, Maine - Iris P. Borden, 78, of Ponderosa Drive, Eliot, died on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at her home following a period of failing health.

Born in Florida on July 19, 1925, she was the daughter of Arthur and Ethel (Hubbard) Hooper. She was brought up in Florida and also New Jersey.

In the 1970s, she moved to Rye Beach, where she made her home for many years before settling in Eliot in the early 1980s. She met, and in 1986, married, her loving husband of more than 18 years, Thomas Borden.

Together they owned and operated Borden Associates of Eliot. An active partner in the business, she manned the phones for customers calls, ran the office and kept track of the guys at all hours on the base radio.

She enjoyed her animals, raising many rare and exotic birds and adored her dogs and cats. She enjoyed keeping her property up, mowing the grass until recently and keeping her plants.

She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Borden, of Eliot; and her sons, Peter and Sean Morahan of Florida.

Funeral services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Christopher Caforio

BARRINGTON - Christopher Scott Caforio, 34, died Friday evening at his family home after a courageous battle against cancer.

Born in Worcester, Mass., on March 21, 1969, his life was filled with love and compassion for others.

He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and studied computer engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and North Adams State College with minor studies in theater arts.

As partner of Astra-Lighting of Cambridge, Mass., he coordinated lighting events throughout the country. He also enjoyed Web design, computer programming and the theater.

His family includes his parents, John and Jeanne (Boucher) Caforio of Barrington; one sister, Gina Hodgdon; a brother-in-law, Shawn; and nephew and inspiration, Zachary of Strafford; paternal grandparents, John and Margaret (DiGiorno) Caforio of Worcester; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Armand and Rita (Pariseau) Boucher.

Calling hours will be held at Purdy Memorial Chapel, Route 4 in Lee, N.H., from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial immediately to follow at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of the Nativity on Route 9 in Barrington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Elizabeth Hersey

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Elizabeth "Liz" (Penney) Hersey, 89, of 62 Concord Way, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Canada, on May 8, 1914, the daughter of Robert N. and Sarah E. (Northcott) Penney. In 1938, she married her husband, Frank C. Hersey.

She worked in Hersey’s Bakery and in the lunch program at the Portsmouth Junior High School and Portsmouth Senior High School. She had also worked as a personal caregiver and companion to the sick and homebound.

She was a member of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth; a volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce at the kiosk located in Market Square; a volunteer for Meals on Wheels; and a volunteer for the Voice. She was a member of NARFE.

She was a very compassionate person, always putting the needs of others first. She enjoyed baking for everyone. Her greatest pleasure was her family, grandchild and great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband of 65 years, survivors include her son, Robert A. Hersey and his wife, Hellen, of Portsmouth; grandson, Richard A. Morgan and his wife, Elizabeth, of Bedford; three great-grandchildren, Drew Morgan, Dana Morgan, and Lacey Ann Morgan; two brothers, John Pike of Portsmouth, Henry Pike of Dover; and two sisters, Frances (Pike) Strout of Rochester, and Mildred (Pike) Psalto of El Paso, Texas.

She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Norman Penney; and three sisters, Evelyn Penney, Mary Riechelt and Rhoda Pike.

A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Donations may be made to the Garden Unit, Mark H. Wentworth Home, 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Reta Littlefield

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Reta L. Littlefield, 92, passed away Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Greenwood Center in Sanford, where she had lived for the past two years.

She was born in Salem, Mass., June 12, 1911, the daughter of Charles D. and Laura B. (Mason) Steeves.

She was brought up on a farm and enjoyed helping others and their children. She raised her five children in North Berwick and also lived in California before retiring to Florida for 36 years. After her husband passed away, she returned to Maine, living in Acton with her son and daughter-in-law.

She loved to play bingo, bridge and shuffleboard. She enjoyed crocheting and going dancing with her husband.

She and her husband built, owned and operated Littlefield’s Take Out on Route 9 in Wells, which is now known as Richard’s Take Out. They sold the business in 1963.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Littlefield; and a daughter, Rita Lorraine Hall in 1991; a son, George Littlefield in 2003; granddaughter, Tory Billings in 1967; and grandson, Ricky Littlefield in 1970; and daughter-in-law, Caroline Littlefield, in 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Bruce Littlefield of North Berwick, Thomas Littlefield and his wife, Patricia, of Acton; one daughter, Laura May Littlefield of Berwick; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no services. Spring interment in the Hillside Cemetery in North Berwick. Friends who wish may contribute to the D.A. Hurd Library in North Berwick. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.

Kenneth Weeks

WOLFEBORO - Kenneth W. Weeks, 80, of Pine Hill Road, passed away Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro, after a brief illness. He was born March 24, 1923, in Milton Mills and had lived in Wolfeboro for 55 years.

He was employed as a mechanic at Horne’s Garage in Wolfeboro for many years. He was also a 17-year veteran of the Wolfeboro Fire Department.

He loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member and instructor for the National Rifle Association.

He was a U.S. World War II Army/Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruby (Eldridge) Weeks, Wolfeboro; two daughters, Betty Jean Austin and her husband, Bert, of Wolfeboro, and Terry Gray and her husband, Fred, of Union; three grandchildren, Mark Lessard and his wife, Stacey, of Ossipee, Bill Lessard and his wife, Gina, of Tuftonboro, and Amanda Fowler and her husband, Joey, of East Rochester; four step-grandchildren, Fred Gray Jr., Sally Hildreth, Allan Gray and Rosie Gray; as well as his extended family, Kelly and Lori Lessard, of Wolfeboro, and William Lessard, of Ossipee; six great-grandchildren; and a stepbrother, Earle Taylor, Effingham.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Route 28, Wolfeboro.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Wolfeboro Fireman’s Relief Association, P.O. Box 1014, Wolfeboro, NH 03894.

Robert Ferry
DOVER - Robert R. Ferry, 79, of Glenwood Avenue, died June 14, 2004, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.

He was the husband of Dorothy (Otis) Ferry.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, N.H.

Kenneth Fowler

DOVER - Kenneth R. Fowler, 94, of Jensen’s Farm Wood Village, Dover, died June 14, 2004, at his residence. He was born March 4, 1910, in Henniker, N.H., the son of Herbert E. and Aglia (Rowe) Fowler.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road, Route 4, Lee, N.H.

Eleanor Mansfield

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Eleanor H. Mansfield, 94, of 346 Pleasant St., died Monday, June 14, 2004, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was born in Winchester, Mass., on Feb. 2, 1910, the daughter of George H. and Josephine (Chase) Hosmer.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward B. Mansfield.

Survivors include her daughter, Diana Frost and her husband, Albert D. Frost, of Durham; her son, Edward S. Mansfield and his wife, Lynn C. Mansfield, of Salem, Mass.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Michael Norton

DOVER - Michael D. Norton, 36, of Mechanic Street, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Exeter Hospital.

He was born Nov. 8, 1967, in Calais, Maine, a son of Douglas and June (Frasier) Norton. He attended Noble High School and had recently worked in Berwick, Maine, as a painter.

He enjoyed car racing and had raced at the Derby in Rochester, N.H., where he won third place.

He was predeceased by his father, Douglas Norton, in 1981.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, June and Richard Cecchetti of Barrington; a sister, Brenda Cleveland and her husband, Ralph, of Shirley, Mass.; a nephew, Brandon Cleveland; paternal grandparents, Melvin and Elsie Norton of North Berwick; great-grandmother, Viola Taylor of Milford, Mass.; three stepbrothers, Richard Cecchetti of Barrington, Peter Cecchetti and Edward Cecchetti, both of Norwich, Conn.; stepsister, Sherry Hayes of Barrington; and aunts, uncles, and many cousins.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, June 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick, Maine, where a funeral will be held Saturday, June 19 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick, Maine.

Vivian Pinell

DOVER - Vivian C. (Hutchins) Pinell, 91, died at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover on June 5, 2004, after a long illness.

She was born in Madbury on Feb. 1, 1913, the daughter of Raymond and Ritta (Brown) Towle. She was a lifelong resident of Dover. She was educated in the Dover school system and was a dietitian for many years at St. Ann Nursing Home. She enjoyed dancing, walking, traveling, and art. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Family members include her husband, Alfred J. Pinell of Dover; three daughters, Rita Nelson of Brunswick, Maine, Linda Seba of Olathe, Kan., and Joan Seavey of Port Charlotte, Fla.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Laura Nortin of Dover.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Harry W. Hutchins.

Services will be private.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Eunice Raymond

TAMWORTH - Eunice "Sandy" (Gravelle) Raymond, 85, wife of Paul L. Raymond, formerly of Beverly, Mass., died June 8, 2004, at the Sunbridge of Rochester.

She was born in Bradford, Mass., the daughter of Charles and Ethel (Clark) Gravelle.

She was a graduate of Malden High School in 1937 and the Boston School of Dental Nursing. She enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1946.

She was active in the Girl Scouts for 40 years and was a member of the Eastern Star, the Rainbow Girls Advisory Board. She was active in the women’s group at the Second Congregational Church in Beverly, was a five-year chairperson for the annual Beverly Heart Fund Drive, a member of the Tamworth, N.H., Historical Society, the Tamworth Lionesses, the Ossipee Concerned Citizens and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Judith M. and her husband, Edwin Prantis, of Rochester; one son, John W. and his wife, Carol Raymond, of Beverly; and five grandchildren, Keith C., Michael P. and Sara J. Prantis, John W. Jr., and Jennifer M. Raymond. She was the mother of the late Joyce H. Raymond.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 18 in the Lee, Moody & Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane St., Beverly at 11 a.m. A visiting hour will precede the service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Activity Resident’s Fund, Sunbridge of Rochester, 62 Rochester Hill Road., Rochester, NH 03867.

Robert Rollins

ALTON BAY - Robert Thornton Rollins, 92, of Route 11-D in Alton Bay, died on Sunday, June 13, 2004, at SunBridge Care in Wolfeboro after a period of failing health.

Born May 2, 1912, in Alton, the eldest son of the late Harry M. and Dorothy (Sellers) Rollins, he was raised in Alton and was a graduate of Alton High School, Class of 1930. He resided in Alton most of his life.

He was a postal carrier for many years. He also was the owner of Robert T. Rollins, Painting Contractor, having painted many homes in the local area.

An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and was a fly fisherman. He was well versed as a raconteur, telling stories from his lifetime.

Married to the late Frances (Jones) Rollins of Farmington for 52 years, who predeceased him in 1989, he was also predeceased by his brother, Steven W. Rollins in 2000.

He is survived by his sister, Gertrude L. Griffin of Alton; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 18 at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington, N.H. There are no calling hours. Family and friends are welcome to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations, may be made in his memory to the Gilman Library, Main Street, Alton, NH 03809.

Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St., Farmington, NH 03835.

Richard Sargent

DOVER - Richard G. Sargent, 91, of Pinecrest Lane, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Wolfeboro on June 28, 1912, he was the son of G. Otis and Edith May (Canney) Sargent and had been a longtime resident of Dover.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the 3122 Ordnance Division, and was a life member of the Dover Post 8 American Legion and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 752 of Dover.

He retired in 1974 from the Moore Business Forms Co. of Dover after more than 38 years and was a member of the Moore Old Timers Club. He enjoyed gardening.

He was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Wolfeboro Falls.

He is survived by a son, Wayne Sargent and his wife, Kim, of Strafford; a daughter, Lyn Scribner and her husband, Wade, of Rochester; two grandsons, Thomas Sargent and William Sargent; a great-granddaughter, Kristyn Nicole Sargent; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, A. Clare (Moody) Sargent, whom he married Feb. 14, 1942, and was also predeceased by two brothers, Russell Sargent and Willard Sargent; and a sister, Barbara M. Frost.

There are no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 18 at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., with the Rev. James Vreeland officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that those who wish are invited to make memorials in his name to the charity of one’s choice.
