Frances Johnson

PORTSMOUTH - Frances McCrillis Johnson, 86, died April 6, 2004, at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

Born in Manchester on April 4, 1918, she was the daughter of Frank and
Rachel Newton McCrillis.

She graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1936 and from
the University of New Hampshire in 1940. While at UNH, she was an active
member of Chi Omega sorority.

She married her UNH classmate, Thomas F. Johnson, in August 1941. Upon completion of Thomas’s World War II army service, they settled in Brentwood, N.Y. In addition to raising five children, she taught kindergarten for 25 years in Brentwood Public Schools. She was active in the community and served as a trustee of the Brentwood Public Library.

Following retirement, she and her husband divided their time between Brentwood and New Smyrna Beach, Fla. In 1995, she returned to New Hampshire. Her husband predeceased her in 1994.

Her surviving family includes, Carol Hornblower and Fred Weber of North Quincy, Mass.; Deborah Johnson and John Macri of Durham; Prudence and Dan Nietupski of Khobar, S.A.; Barbara Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; and William Johnson and Joanne Shepherd of Atlantic City, N.J.
Her grandchildren include Kim and Ken Johnson; Derek and Matthew Spain; Nick and Juliana Macri; and Nyoka and Tamaso Johnson.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Garden Unit of the Mark Wentworth Home, 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, NH 03801 or to the Brentwood Public Library, Second Avenue, Brentwood, NY 11717.

Arrangements are under the direction of Purdy Memorial Chapel, Lee and Oyster River Crematory, Barrington.

Joan Karwowski

NASHUA - Joan F. Karwowski, 70, of 35 Woodfield St., died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Born in Somersworth on April 26, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Carrigan) Daigle.

She was educated in the Somersworth School System and has lived in Nashua for the past 40 years. She was the wife of the late Walter T. Karwowski Jr., who died in 1997.

She worked as a hostess at the former Green Ridge Turkey Farm in Nashua for several years.

She was a communicant at the Immaculate Conception Church. She was happiest and most content spending time with family and the many friends that were always present. She also enjoyed vacationing at the lake and dancing.

Surviving family members include three daughters; Mary Porter and her husband, Gary, of Derry, Jay Jay Karwowski of Nashua, and Susan Bielawski of Derry; three sons, Michael Karwowski and his wife, Kathy, of Hudson, Walter Karwowski III of Nashua, and James Karwowski and his fiancee, Ann LeBlanc, and her son Joey LeBlanc of Nashua; one sister, Mary Leahy and her husband, Robert, of Barnstead; one brother, James Daigle and his wife, Doris, of Sanford, Maine; two grandchildren, Jesse and Joshua Porter, of Derry; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas J. Karwowski, and a sister, Carolyn Cutter.

Calling hours will be on Monday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley St., in Nashua.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Parish, 217 East Dunstable Road, Nashua. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Souhegan Home and Hospice Care, 24 North River Road, Milford, NH 03055. Arrangements are under the direction of Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home in Nashua.

Greg Libby

MIDDLETON - Greg Gardner Libby, 44, of 73 Silver St., died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

Born Jan. 3, 1960, in Rochester, he was the son of Gardner and Muriel (Bailey) Libby.

He was brought up in Lebanon, Maine and attended local schools. He was currently working in the maintenance department at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and rooting for his favorite driver, Jeff Gordon. Hunting, fishing and camping were also some of his favorite things to do. He was a stock car driver at Lee Speedway. He was a loving husband, dad, stepdad, and son. He always put his family first and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Members of his family include his wife, Theresa (Smith) Libby of Middleton; his parents, Gardner and Muriel Libby of Middleton; a son, John Libby, of South Berwick, Maine; two daughters, Patty Dumont and her husband, Andrew, of Derry, and Pam Libby of Middleton; two stepsons, John Smith of Barrington and Dale Smith of Rochester; two stepdaughters, Terry Laughy and her husband Michael of Middleton, and Shiela Washburn and her husband, Ron, of Rochester; a sister, Crystal Ballou of Middleton; a grandmother, Mrs. Merleine Bailey of Wyandotte Falls in Rochester; a granddaughter, Ashlee Lynn (Peanut Butter) of Rochester; four stepgrandchildren, Brittani Labrecque of Middleton, Zachary and Brandon Washburn of Rochester, and Baby John of Barrington; a niece, Danielle Ballou of Middleton; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester, NH 03867.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Rochester, NH 03867.

Burial will follow the service in the New Cold Springs Cemetery, East Rochester.

Raymond Sturtevant

HAVERILL, Mass. - Raymond Paul Sturtevant, 82, of Haverhill, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.

He was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Haverhill, the son of the late Charles and Viva (Bussell) Sturtevant.

He was educated in the Haverhill School System, and served in the Army during World War II.

For several years he was employed as a cable splicer at the former Simplex Wire & Cable, now TYCO, in Newington, N.H., from where he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the VFW in Haverhill.

He was the husband of the late Verna E. (Thompson) Sturtevant, who died in 1998.

His survivors include his children, Herbert and his wife, Joan Fernald, of Somersworth, N.H., Donna and her husband, Tex Hansen, of Newton, N.H., Nancy and her husband, Harold Brooks, of York Beach, Maine, Stephen and his wife, Tina Fernald, of Dover, N.H., David Sturtevant of Somersworth, N.H., Danny and his wife, Susan Sturtevant, of Shapleigh, Maine, Raymond and Kenneth Sturtevant of South Carolina; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; as well as brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral service on Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill.

Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Rye, N.H.

A visitation period will precede the funeral service on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Jean McCarthy
HAMPTON - Jean M. (Maskwa) McCarthy, 68, of 116 Mill Road in Hampton, longtime and formerly a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, died unexpectedly at Exeter Hospital on Thursday morning, June 3, 2004.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Her interment in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery in New Castle will be held privately. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Roland A. Ruel

NEW DURHAM - Roland A. Ruel, 66, of 145 Birch Hill Road, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at his son’s home in Oakham, Mass.

Born July 11, 1937 in Dover, N.H., he was the son of the late Paul J. and Alice (Forcier) Ruel.

He served in the U.S. Navy. He has lived in New Durham for the past seven years after moving from Gonic, where he had lived for 40 years. He was a retired co-owner of Ruel Fuels of Rochester. He enjoyed gardening and his loving dog, Henry.

Members of his family include his two sons, Roland G. Ruel and his wife, Colleen, of Oakham, Mass., and Kevin E. Ruel and his wife, Ann, of New Durham; three brothers, Paul R. Ruel and George Ruel, both of Dover, and Norman Ruel of Berwick, Maine; two sisters, Doris Chase and her husband, Steve Jr., of Nottingham, and Lorraine Bennett of Tennessee; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Ruel, and his loving wife, Annette M. (Bisson) Ruel.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Charles Cemetery, Dover.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115-6110.

Pamela Blevins
NEWINGTON - Pamela E. Blevins, the loving wife of Ben A. Blevins Sr. for 25 years and the daughter of Eileen (Bowden) and the late
Harold A. Eels, passed away while surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, after a long illness.

She was a graduate of Newington Elementary School and Portsmouth High School. She also attended Plymouth College and graduated from McIntosh College.

Active in community affairs, she was a 4-H member; a member of the Durham Business and Professional Women’s Club; a Big Sister for many years in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters; and a member of the Newington Historical District Commission and the Newington Historical Society. She was a member of the Newington Town Church and taught Sunday school. She also belonged to the Seacoast Red Hat Mamas and the Scarlet Women of Portsmouth.

In addition to her husband, family members include two stepsons, B. Allen Blevins Jr. of Alamosa, Colo., and M. Sean Blevins of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter Sydney A. Blevins of Alamosa; a special loving friend, Sylvia I. Rauschenbach of Dover; several other loving friends; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held at the Newington Town Church, Nimble Hill Road, Newington, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Friends are invited. A memorial visitation will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Broad Street, Portsmouth, on Monday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Family flowers only. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society (Breast Cancer Research), Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Elaine J. Cook

NEWMARKET - Elaine J. Cook, 76, of South Street died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at Exeter Hospital.

She was the widow of Walter E. Cook Sr.

Elaine was the loving mother of six children, Walter E. Cook Jr., Tommy Spencer, Diana Spencer, Debra Matheson, Joyce Beaubien and Rebecca Cook. There are also seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

There will be a private memorial service for family at Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, on Monday. Friends and relatives are invited for a celebration of Elaine’s life at her daughter Joyce’s home, 11 Railroad St., Newmarket, on Monday at 6 p.m. Donations may be made in her memory to the Newmarket Senior Citizens, c/o Sophie Pazdon, 25 Bay Road, Newmarket, NH 03857. She loved spending her time with the seniors.

Alma M. Gray

STETSON, Maine. - Alma M. Gray, 82, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at a Bangor hospital.

She was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Rochester, N.H., the daughter of Dana W. Meader and Annie E. (Marshall) Meader. She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar N. Gray.

She is survived by all her children: Jonathan W. and his wife, Nancy Wright-Gray, of Sterling, Mass.; Peter N. and his wife, Judy Gray, of Falmouth; Faith E. Gray of Maple Valley, Wash.; Susan J. Roberts and her husband, James, of Miami, Fla.; Timothy E. Gray of Newport; Rebecca R. Victor and her husband, Anthony, of Fairfield, Ill.; Beth E. Gray of Chichester, N.H.; Daniel R. Gray and his wife, Joan, of Caycee, S.C.; Deborah A. Cawley and her husband, Blair, of Stetson; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at Meaderboro Friends Community Church with the Rev. John Scruton, officiating.

Susan Hersey

EAST KINGSTON - Susan Elizabeth (Walkey) Hersey, 40, of East Kingston passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004.

She was born Jan. 14, 1964, in Newburyport, Mass., a daughter of Richard A. and Jane L. (Coffey) Walkey.

She grew up in Amesbury, Mass., and attended local schools. She was a member of the Eagles Club in Somersworth and enjoyed playing ice hockey, field hockey and dancing. She was a very sociable person.

She leaves her husband Leonard Hersey, and her two children, Michelle Mills and Jacob Hersey, all of Berwick, Maine; her loving mother, Jane Sanville, and her husband, Douglas, of East Kingston; a sister, Julie Clark, and her husband, Stephen, of Hampstead; two brothers, David Walkey of Bradenton Fla., and Ronald Walkey of East Kingston; and
three nieces and two nephews.

Friends may visit with the family on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Simplicity Burial and Cremation Services, 34 Lafayette Road, Salisbury, Mass. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.

Carlton Hutchins

ELIOT, Maine - Carlton E. Hutchins, 84, of Wood Avenue died on Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at York Hospital.

A funeral will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. Friends may visit with his family on Sunday afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114. Arrangements are entrusted to J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

June MacKenzie

KITTERY, Maine - June Ann MacKenzie, 65, of Sterling Road died on Thursday Aug. 12, 2004, at York Hospital following a long and courageous 18-year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born on Sept. 2, 1938, in Randolph, Mass., attended local schools and graduated from Brockton High school with the Class of 1956.

She served her country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1956 until 1962. She married her husband, Rene Bedard, in 1973, and in 1976 they made their home in the Seacoast, settling in Kittery where they raised their family.

She is survived by her family: her sons, Brian MacKenzie of Kittery and Brandon Bedard and his wife, Amy, of Kittery; and her loving granddaughter, Ashley Bedard. She was predeceased by her husband, Rene.

Services will be private. Arrangements are entrusted to J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery

Mildred Max

DOVER - Mildred Louise Max, 83, of 7 Brookmoor Road died Friday Aug. 13, 2004, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

She was born on July 3, 1921, the daughter of Vaughn P. and Alice Louise (Adams) Lowell, in Brooksville, Fla.

Arrangements are being made with Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave, Dover, N.H.

Aaron Murray

KITTERY, Maine - Aaron B. Murray, 42, of Gray Lodge Road died on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at his church, First Congregational Church at Kittery Point. Friends and family may visit with his family on Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine.
