Mary F. Fountain
EXETER - Mary F. Fountain, 84, a longtime resident of Riverwoods at Exeter, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Exeter Hospital.
Mrs. Fountain, who was known as Polly, was born in Vermillion, S.D., studied mathematics at the University of South Dakota and attended nursing school at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
She married Dr. Gerard Fountain of Scarsdale, N.Y., in 1944, and lived in Scarsdale until 1972, when she and her husband moved to Walpole, N.H. They moved to Norwich, Vt., in 1979 and to Riverwoods in 1994.
At Riverwoods, she served on the finance committee for many years, and organized trips to rehearsals of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She helped produce the Riverwoods newsletter and supervised Channel 8, the Riverwoods information channel.
She enjoyed many crafts activities, including quilting, basket weaving, jewelry making, knitting and sewing. While living in Vermont, she was a volunteer with the Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire in White River Junction, Vt.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Margaret F. Smith, of Brattleboro, Vt.; four sons, William, of Westfield, N.J., Rod, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Edward, of Ardsley, N.Y., and Henry, of Pelham, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Riverwoods on Friday, Aug. 6. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Kensico Cemetery inValhalla, N.Y. Roy N. Monast
DOVER - Roy N. Monast,71, of 26 Anita St., died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
Born March 31, 1933, in Fall River Mass., he was the son of the late Roland and Anita Monast.
Mr. Monast has lived in Rochester for the past eight years, where he discovered an extended family that has brought him a lot of joy, after moving from Fall River, Mass., where he grew up. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Upon returning from the war, he enrolled in college and specialized in being a draftsman. He was later employed as a car salesman and against all odds became very successful.
He received national honors from Lee Ioccoca, who had given him a cashmere coat and a watch, which he was very proud of. He was a big man with a robust voice and a teddy bear spirit. He was an avid golfer but his biggest joy was his family.
Members of his family include his wife of eight years, Cheryl (Corson) Monast of Rochester; his sons, Russell Monast and his wife, Pauline, of Somerset, Mass., and Robert Monast and his wife, Lisa, of Cincinnati, Ohio; his stepchildren, Nita and Gary Myler of Rochester, David Corson and his wife, Heidi, of Rochester, and Tracy Corson of Rochester; seven grandchildren who Grampa Wampa will always watch over; a brother, Butch Monast and his wife, Marilyn, of Key West, Fla.; his sisters, Shirley Gifford of Fall River, Mass., and Joann Audette of Tiverton, R.I.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Tri-city Christian Academy building fund, 150 West High St., Somersworth NH 03878. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in the Grace Community Church, Route 108 in Rochester. Casual attire is acceptable. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.M. James R. Farrer
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - James R. Farrer, M.D., 62, a longtime resident of Exeter, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in Saratoga Springs.
Dr. Farrer, a psychiatrist and professor of psychiatric medicine, most recently served as chief medical officer at Four Winds - Saratoga in Saratoga Springs. His prior positions included serving as chairman and professor of psychiatry at Mercer University, Savannah Branch, Savannah, Ga.; chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Memorial Health University Medical Center, Savannah; medical director of Tidelands Mental Health Center, Savannah; medical director of Memorial Behavioral Services, Savannah; and medical director of Hampstead Hospital, Hampstead.
Dr. Farrer also had a private psychiatric practice for a number of years in Nashville, Tenn., where he also held a teaching position at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Farrer completed his residency in psychiatry at Tulane University Medical School, where he taught psychiatry to first year medical students.
He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Stanford University in 1961 and and his medical degree in 1967 from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and completed his internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
One of his teachers was Nobel Laureate Joe Goldstein, whom he considered a mentor for his teaching career. Dr. Farrer served in the U.S. Navy on Whidbey Island, Washington, and was the base psychiatrist there from 1970-1971.
Dr. Farrer is survived by his wife, Linda (Varnell); his sons Andrew, currently on active duty wth the U.S. Marine Corps, and Matthew of Seattle, Washington; and his brother Bruce of Portland, Oregon.
Dr. Farrer’s burial service was private. A memorial service is planned for October at All Saints Chapel in Sewanee, Tennessee
Isabella Sleeper
TILTON - Mrs. Isabella Lillian Sleeper, 99, of Tilton, died peacefully in her sleep, Aug. 7, 2004, at Mountain Ridge Genesis Eldercare in Franklin.
Mrs. Sleeper was born in Tilton on Jan. 13, 1905, the daughter of Napoleon and Mary Louise (Shiatte) Robert.
Isabella has been an active member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Tilton her entire life. She was baptized, received her first communion and confirmation, and was married in the church.
Isabella spent her freshman year, her last year of high school, at the Tilton Prep School.
Following her education, she immediately started working at Tilton Endless Belt Company. She married, started a family, and at age 23 decided she needed to be home with her husband and family.
Isabella spent the next 27 years raising her five boys and two girls. She remained active in the Catholic Church where her boys served as altar boys and her daughters sang in the choir. She was a member of the St. Anne’s Society, the Fifty-Five Club and the Catholic Daughters of America.
Isabella, and her husband of 51 years, Joseph N. Sleeper, who died in 1980, enjoyed spending weekends fishing and swimming at a camp in Silver Lake.
At age 60, Isabella returned to work and spent the next seven years at Tilton Endless Belt. At age 67, she retired to enjoy her family and grandchildren.
Lately, she enjoyed many happy hours watching her favorite TV shows and praying for the health and happiness of her family and friends.
Family members include her three sons: John B. Sleeper of Tilton, Andrew E. Sleeper of Northfield, and George W. Sleeper of Tilton; several grandchildren and great-granchildren, a sister, Mary Priscilla Robert of Ft. Thomas, Ky.; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two daughters: Barbara Veator (died in 1997) and Rose Marie Valliere (died 1998); two sons: J. Robert Sleeper (died 1994) and Richard D. Sleeper (died 1992); and three brothers: George, Albert and Melvin Robert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Saint Mary of the Assumption Church, Chestnut Street, Tilton. Burial will follow. Calling hours will be private. Albert O. Hamilton
SOMERSWORTH - Albert O. Hamilton, 76, formerly of Warminster, Pa., died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Riverside Rest Home, Dover, after a long illness.
Mr. Hamilton was born at home in Philadelphia, Pa., on Aug. 5, 1928, a son of the late Anna Schelke and Albert Ogden Hamilton. He is also predeceased by a sister, Anna.
He attended Friends School in Philadelphia and received his high school diploma from Standard Evening High School. Mr. Hamilton, who received his associate’s degree in accounting from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, devoted his entire career to accounting and credit management, serving in this role for various businesses and financial institutions in the Philadelphia area. He retired in 1990. In 2001, he and his wife moved to Somersworth, where they lived with their daughter and her partner. Mr. Hamilton enjoyed traveling and building model railroads. His large collection of vintage trains and handcrafted buildings was admired by all who saw them. He was a member of the Warminster Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania and joined the First Parish United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Somersworth when he moved to New Hampshire.
Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife of 54 years, Olive H. Hamilton, who is a resident of The Pines of Newmarket; and his daughter, Deborah H. Hamilton of Somersworth.
A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at 2 p.m. at The Pines of Newmarket, 9 Grant Road, Newmarket, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Seacoast Hospice, First Parish United Church of Christ in Somersworth, or Cocheco Valley Humane Society. Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of New Hampshire.
Harlon P. ‘Pete’ Willis
PORTSMOUTH - Harlon P. "Pete" Willis, 72, of 437 Lafayette Road, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born in Boston, Mass., on Sept. 4, 1931, the son of the late Harlon P. and Frances (Payne) Willis. Mr. Willis was a graduate of Brookline High School, Class of 1950 and the Franklin Technical Institute in Boston.
He served in the National Guard for over 10 years. Mr. Willis started his career as an automobile technician at Robie Ford in Dorcester, Mass., then went on to work for Stilphen Motor Company in Dorcester and Dave Dinger Ford in Braintree, Mass. After moving to Portsmouth, he went to work for Brady/Portsmouth Ford and prior to his retirement was employed at Starkey Ford in York, Maine.
He was a member of Bethany Church in Greenland where he was involved in the Men’s Life Breakfast, Prime Timers and "Da Group." Mr. Willis was an auto enthusiast whose love of cars spilled over to his hobby of antique Chevrolets. He was a member of the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America and formerly a member of the Maine Obsolete Auto League.
He was a member of the Northern New England Region Vintage Chevrolet Club, where he had served as director from 1999 to 2002, and was serving as assistant director. He loved his family and also enjoyed travel.
Besides his wife of 48 years, Jean (Parkhurst) Willis, survivors include four children, Linda J. Stone and her husband, David, of Haverhill, Mass., Beth E. Johnson and her husband, Richard, of Eliot, Maine, Gordon F. Willis and his wife, Lori, of Stratham, and Harlon P. Willis of Kittery, Maine; six grandchildren, Martin F. Stone of Haverhill, Mass., Holly B. Johnson, Samuel G. Johnson and Brian P. Johnson, all of Eliot, Maine, and Andrew J. Economos and Matthew R. Willis, both of Stratham; a brother, John E. Willis of Eliot; and several nieces and nephews.
A sister, Jane C. Arketook, predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held at the Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Church.
Rita S. Landry
LACONIA - Rita S. Landry, 91, formerly a long-time resident of Laconia, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at the Charlene Manor in Greenfield, Mass.
Mrs. Landry was born July 14, 1913, in Laconia, the daughter of Philip and Yvonne (Michelle) Carrigan. She was a resident of Laconia until moving to Greenfield in 1980.
Mrs. Landry was employed at the Laconia Needle Company for 49 years, retiring in 1978. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.
Survivors include a son, Philip N. Landry of Greenfield; a grandson, Scott A. Landry of Greenfield; a great-grandson; two nephews; and several grandnephews and grandnieces.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, using the Carriage House entrance. Linn Downs
THORNTON - Linn H. Downs, 50, Treeline Road, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Franconia.
She was born in Binghamton, N.Y., on June 13, 1954, the daughter of late Charles W. Jr. and Nancy-Linn (Nellis) Downs. She grew up in Middleberg, Pa., and graduated from Middleberg High School, Class of 1972. She graduated from Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y., with a master’s degree in education and then from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. She has been a resident of the Thornton area for the past 19 years.
She worked from 1977 to 1985 in the corporate sector as a translation coordinator and manager for several corporations such as Xerox Corp. in Rochester, Cycliphase Corp. in Vienna, Va., Stenograph Corp. in Skokie, Ill., and Burroughs Corp. in Detroit, Mich.
In 1985, she went to work for the Supervisor Union 48 as a language teacher. She taught Spanish in the Waterville Valley School, Plymouth Elementary School and Holderness School. She also taught in the Maple Cottage School in Campton, the Montessori School in Plymouth, and adult education classes at Plymouth State University.
She was the founder of the Close Knit Press Te Publishing Corp. in Campton. She recently was working as an executive director of the North Country Chamber Players in Littleton.
Survivors include her husband of 19 years, Yukio Endo of Thornton; a daughter, Lauria Downs of Thornton; her mother, Nancy-Linn Downs of Searsport, Maine; and her stepfather, Robert Shaffer of Ocean City, N.J.
Calling hours will be held in the Mayhew Funeral Home, 12 Langdon St., Plymouth on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, donations may me made to the North Country Chamber Players, P.O. Box 904, Littleton, NH 03561.
George Davis
HOLLY HILL, Fla. - George E. Davis, 71, Jasmine Avenue, Holly Hill, Fla., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at his home. Born in Farmington, N.H., he moved to Holly Hill from Malden, Mass.
Before retirement, he worked as a truck driver and was an Army and Air Force veteran. Mr. Davis was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1590, Daytona Beach, Fla., and served as commander of American Legion Post 120 in Holly Hill, Fla.
He is survived by his daughter, Aloha Cameron of Farmington; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Ludger Brisebois
ALLENSTOWN - Ludger O. Brisebois, 79, of Whitten Street died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Edgewood Center in Portsmouth after a lengthy illness.
Born in Salmon Falls on Oct. 30, 1924, Mr. Brisebois was the son of Joseph and Marie (Michaud) Brisebois. He had been an Allenstown resident most of his life. He was a retired textile worker, having been employed by both Chemfab and the Suncook Mills. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II.
Members of his family include his wife, Jeannette (Richard) Brisebois of Allenstown; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jacqueline (Boisvert) Brisebois of York, Maine; a granddaughter, Amy (Mrs. Jonathan) Sherwood of Newburyport, Mass.; two sisters, Evelyn Laflamme and Millie Peloquin, both of Allenstown; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives may call at the Petit Funeral Home, 167 Main St., on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. by Rev. Vernon Cole
NEWFIELDS - Vernon R. Cole, 88, of Bald Hill Road, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at his home in Newfields. Born in Danvers, Mass., on Dec. 12, 1915, he was raised in Maine and had lived in Newfields for 48 years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge, was a disabled veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. Vernon was a carpenter by trade and was a life member of the Carpenter’s Union. He loved to farm and garden and he enjoyed antiques.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ruth (Hanson) Cole of Newfields; one sister, Doris Lavoie of Beverly, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services with military honors will be held on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Piscassic Cemetery, Newfields. The Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket is assisting with arrangements.
Florence Czachor
KITTERY, Maine - Florence H. Czachor, 81, of 70 Goodwin Road in Kittery Point, Maine, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St Raphael Church in Kittery on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H., on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the Rice Public Library in Kittery or to the American Diabetes Association.
Agnes Souliere
ALTON - Agnes Pauline Souliere, 70, of Pearson Road in Alton, died Friday morning Oct. 22, 2004, at the Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro after a lengthy illness.
Born May 8, 1934, and raised in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Eunice (Madore) Young. She travelled around the countryside with her husband in the Air Force for 20 years. She resided in Portsmouth from 1964 to 1979, followed by Bingham, Maine, for over 22 years before moving to Alton in September, 2003.
A homemaker and mother she also worked as a waitress at the officers club at the Ernest Harmond Air Force Base in Newfoundland, the former Booth Fishery, and as hostess and waitress at the Valley’s Steak House in Kittery, Maine.
Agnes enjoyed being with family and relatives, quilt making, knitting, and sewing. A member of the St. Peter church in Bingham, Maine, she attended church locally or Father Ham would visit her due to her illness.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Gerald Lucien Souliere of Alton; three daughters, Gloria L. Pierre of Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, Susan M. Gowen of Jacksonville, Fla., Elaine M. Wagner of Elko, Nev.; three sons, Phillip J. Souliere of Portsmouth, Jerry L. Souliere of Farmington, Roger E. Souliere of Portsmouth; a brother, Joseph Young of Stephenville, Newfoundland; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Robert in 1999; a daughter, Lorraine in 1992; a brother, Nicholas; and a sister, Carmelita.

Rita Boucher
SOMERSWORTH - Rita M. Boucher, 85, of 21 W. Green St. died Friday Oct. 22, 2004, at St. Anne Healthcare Center, Dover after a period of failing health. Rita was born in Somersworth on Sept. 8, 1919, and was the daughter of Emile and Mary (McGee) Boucher.
She was raised in this community and was a graduate of St. Martin Academy and Commercial School. She had been a resident of this community all of her life.
She had worked several years as an office worker with the Internal Revenue Service and retired from General Electric as an assembly line worker with over 30 years of service.
A devoted member of St. Martin Catholic Church, Rita served as an Eucharistic minister and as a member of the choir. She was also a member of St. Martin Ladies Guild. Rita also served others in need as a volunteer at Frisbie Memorial Hospital and as a volunteer at the food pantry.
Family members include a brother, Paul Boucher of Rochester, and a sister, Jeannette Shaw of Somersworth, and several nephews and nieces.

ROCHESTER - Constance Fae "Connie" Scheffer, 78, of 6 Hale St. died Friday Oct. 22, 2004, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
